The histology capabilities at the Lamar Fish Health Center allow biologists to encase specimens in wax, shave them into thin slivers, then dye and place the specimen on a slide for disease analysis.

The Liberation Monument ("Russian monument")

Officially, one can find various names: (Russian) Liberation Monument, Russian War Memorial and Monument of the Red Army. The Viennese call the towering monument at the southern end of the Black Mountain course (Schwarzenbergplatz) usually disparaging "Russian monument (Russendenkmal)".
The monument commemorating the 18,000 in the liberation of Vienna fallen soldiers of the Red Army was designed by Major Intazarin, the sculptures were created by Lieutenant Jakoviev. The overall direction of the yet in April 1945 ordered and as first monument building after the war completed structure had major Ing. Mikhail Scheinfeld. In the construction were temporarily 400 workers involved, 18 tons of bronze and 300 cubic meters of marble were used. The monument was on 19 August 1945 with the assistance of Karl Renner, Leopold Figl and Theodor Körner unveiled on then so designated Stalin Square.
On a in total 20 m high, marble-clad base, the lower part in the form of a five-pointed red star, decorated with flags and guard badges, stands the 12 m tall figure of a Red Army soldier. The soldier is wearing a gold helmet and the famous Russian submachine gun with rotary magazine. With his left hand he has the flag with the right hand he holds a round shield with the Soviet coat of arms. In the background arises a broad, eight meter high balustrade, at its end respectively one group of two fighting men is situated, a prime example of the style of socialist realism, which gradually has become an art-historical rarity.
One of the inscriptions in Russian only in the early 80s have been translated into German and is:
"Eternal glory to the heroes of the Red Army, killed in action against the German-fascist invaders for the freedom and independence of the peoples of Europe (Mikhalkov)".
Until 1956, there were also graves of Soviet soldiers in the area, and a Soviet tank stood before the monument.
The monument is in the custody of the City of Vienna. As is generally known, Austria is according to the detailed provisions of Article 19 of the State Treaty of 15 May 1955 committed war graves and war memorials of the Allied Powers on Austrian soil "to respect, to protect and to preserve".
Between 1945 and 1956 stood in front of the fountain on the former "Stalin Square" a Russian tank, which is now in the Museum of Military History.

Sometimes leads the memory to the bad experiences which have been made by Austrian people with the occupation forces - particularly the Soviet - in the ten years of Allied occupation to open resentment against monuments such as the "Russian monument". Nevertheless - the greater the distance from the war and post-war period is, the more one had to give account about the fact how much innocent blood just the peoples of the former Soviet Union have sacrificed in the fight against Hitler's rule, and how little the Austrian people to its own liberation has contributed. Such thoughts have got to come to one's mind when one takes some time to decipher the Cyrillic letters of gold on a "Russian monument" - whether on that at Vienna Schwarzenberg Square or somewhere out in the vast realms of Lower Austria, where up to the Waldviertel (part of Lower Austria) little Soviet military cemeteries exist.
A survey by the Gallup Institute, published in the "standard" on 11th February 1992 shows that 71% of Viennes people do know the monument. A clear majority (59 %) is for the preservation of the monument. Only 9% of the 1,000 respondents agreed with the opinion that the monument should be eliminated as a remnant of Stalinism. So, have the Austrians made peace with the contemporary history?

Before the liberation monument arises the to the occasion of the completion of the First Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline on 24th October 1873 in the presence of the emperor put into operation Hochstrahlbrunnen (high jet fountain), which should have been standing according to the original plans in front of the Votive Church, then opposite the New Town Hall. The builder of the aqueduct and the fountain, Anton Gabrielli, was a friend of astronomy. Accordingly, symbolizes the respective number of the jets of water the days of the year, the months, the days of the month, the days of the week and the hours of the day.

Longridge won this game having dominated possession , and creating enough early chances to win 3 games, against a very well organised and hardworking Whitehaven side.
Town started strongly and should have scored at least the opening goal as the Whitehaven keeper saved well from Brad Carsley, McDonald crashed a volley against the bar, Carsley hit the post and McKenna was denied what looked a clear penalty by the referee on 20 minutes.
Chances came and went, as Longridge played their best football for several weeks without getting the breakthrough they deserved and the inconsistency of the referee, bizarrely chosen for this game despite his performance in Towns recent defeat to Garstang, hindered both sides.
Half time came at 0-0, but the Town faithful remained confident as Asheys side were dominating the game, and the vital first goal would surely come in the second half.
Carsley had a free kick well saved 10 minutes into the half, and Ged Smith had a decent penalty shout waved away a minute later.
Ashcroft then replaced Ryan McKenna on the hour as the Manager looked for the vital 3 points, going straight up front with Carsley, and Longridge looked more threatening immediately.
Dovey in the Town goal was having a quiet day, and remained untroubled, as Whitehaven sat deep and were quite content to defend their clean sheet, albeit they were doing it very well.
The goal came on 70 minutes as an inswinging Ged Smith corner looked destined to go straight in, before Carsley made sure with a deft flick of the head, to make it 1-0 to Longridge. No more than 'The Ridge' deserved and the feeling now amongst a celebrating home crowd of 108 was that Town would go on to add to their lead.
Jordan Bowen and Luke McKenna were having excellent games for Longridge, and kept the ball at will before finding Carsley wide right with just 5 minutes remaining. The powerful striker drove at the visiting defence before being brought down for Towns 3rd penalty shout of the game. He got himself to his feet to take the kick, but was thwarted as the young Whitehaven keeper made an excellent save diving to his right. Stil 1-0 to Longridge.
Both Jack Preston and youngster Elliot Breakell were brought on for cameo appearances, before the referee added six additional minutes to the dismay of the players, crowd, team Managers and Linesmen, the last of his bewildering decisions of the day.
The result was never put in doubt however, as Town kept possession and played out time to take the 3 points that keeps them at the top of the West Lancashire League Premier Division with just two games remaining.

Bruges (Brugge in Dutch) is a gem of a museum piece- almost miraculously so. It rose early enough to create its own prosperity and identity before most other cities in Northern Europe, and it faded soon enough to escape the cataclysms of the Reformation and Industrial eras.
Bruges built its fortune upon the trade and processing of wool products from England and Scotland, and upon goods from the continental interior. By the late 1100's, ships began arriving in the city's Zwin River from as far as the Hanseatic League and Venice with goods from as far as the Middle East and Russia. Trade was conducted along the canals, and Bruges quickly became arguably the most important port in Europe. This complex trade led to the development of more sophisticated financial systems, and in 1309, Bruges opened what was possibly the world's first stock exchange.
Such was the city's prosperity that when the queen of France visited in 1301 she is quoted as saying: "I thought I alone was queen, but I see that I have 600 rivals here". Bruges' richness also helped develop the earliest artists of the Northern Renaissance, most notably Jan van Eyck.
Only a year later, the French garrisoned an army in the city to settle a dispute among the ruling and merchant classes, and on the night of May 18 a revolt against French rule began with the "Bruges Matins", in which a mob filled the streets killing anyone who could not properly pronounce the Dutch phrase: "schild en vriend" (supposedly difficult to pronounce for a French speaker). Almost the entire French population (estimated at 2,000) was massacred. Over the next few years, local militias throughout Flanders drove the French out, thus permanently cementing the city in Dutch/Flemish culture.
At its peak, Bruges had a population of 200,000, and by many accounts was the second largest city in Europe after Paris. The miraculousness of Brugge as a "museum piece", however, comes from its precipitous decline. Around 1500, by one of the many whims of the North Sea, the Zwin River began to silt up. Lacking its lifeblood, the city fell into obscurity as business moved to Brussels, Ghent, and Antwerp.
It became a forgotten city, "Die tote Stadt" of Korngold's 20th century opera. Its dormancy, however, was its preservation. Hardly, if any, Baroque, Classical, or 19th century developments ever touched this town. In the past century, however, Bruges has picked up speed again, this time due to tourism.
The result- a pretty much intact medieval city, not terribly different from its original state. As such, it draws its requisite tourists, and can be seen at times a sort of historical theme park (but thankfully without the commercialization).
To walk its streets is surreal. A fever dream of sorts. The real magic is at night, when the daytrippers disappear, and the few tourists that are left hole up with locals at the bar or sit in the Grote Markt listening to the ethereal and ornate rings from the bell tower. The ancient streets then are dead quiet, the canals still, and one can feel the ghosts rising.
