The things you find when cleaning out the crawlspace...

When I lived in Minnesota, my neighborhood included a very odd little museum, the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices, dedicated to the odd devices associated with medical quackery over the years, including bloodletting devices, placebo pills, radium drops, etc.

One of the main exhibits of the small museum was a Psycograph, a machine that automatically characterized your head and used the principles of phrenology to characterize your personality. It did this using a contraption that was a gigantic metal helmet hooked to a little box of gears, rollers, and stamps, that would look at the height of different regions on your head, and turn that into a little paper tape listing your personality characteristics.

The results of my "head examination" are shown here. I seem to score well in "Individuality", "Wit", "Dignity", and "Exactness", while scoring poorly in "Secretiveness" and "Sexamity" (whatever that is... the hallmark of a good pseudoscience is unique terminology).

Using their provided interpretation chart, you could use these results to determine what your ideal profession is. Going through the results, I'm not a terribly great match for anything in particular, but I do score quite highly for "Zeppelin Attendant." Apparently I was born half a century too late (although I do score well with "Consulting Engineer", which is my actual profession).

On June 12, 2013, Veterans Green Jobs and GRID Alternatives Colorado, alongside Wells Fargo volunteer teams, provided a series of home improvement upgrades for a Denver couple. Henry (Ray) and Roslyn Navarro received weatherization improvements – including an energy efficient furnace, a water heater, insulation in the attic and crawlspace, CFL lightbulbs throughout the house, carbon monoxide/smoke detectors, and window sealing; solar panels; and exterior painting, landscaping and tree planting. The measures will boost the health, safety, energy efficiency and aesthetics of the 1952 home – as well as reduce the Navarros’ utility bills.

The hive was in the crawl space under a brick house. It was hanging from the under side of the floor and floor joists.

Our house - seventh anniversary: new color (last July), insulation in the attic and crawlspace (looks beautiful doesn't it?), and some furniture in new places. I have an office and Izzy's room is the ad hoc guest room. Didn't have time to tidy this year - a sure sign that we are busier than ever.

On Friday, a raccoon was hit by a car on our street. Come Saturday, Myshelle started hearing mewing noises coming from under the house. Suited up in boots and grubby jeans, and armed with flashlights and a kitty carrier, we tried to climb into the crawlspace. Unfortunately, there was no room at all for us to get in. We ended up having to rip up one of the floor-boards in the closet to access them. Here's Myshelle, trying to peer into the hole.

On April 6th, 2014, Rebuilding Together NYC partnered with Friends of Rockaway and volunteers from Citi to repair a Sandy-damaged home in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn. Volunteers tackled the difficult task of cleaning out a crawlspace and laying down a vapor barrier, helping provide a low-income homeowner with a clean, safe, and dry home from the ground up!

It's amazing how the most bizarre things can reenergize creative types sometime – we all have our odd quirks right?

With an ill-timed plumbing project intruding on my final project deadlines I found myself in our house’s crawl space looking for the main water shut off valve. While down there I discovered that our foundation was largely in part constructed of the original World War Two workforce housing that sat on our property until 1950. I have always wondered what happened to the original buildings… now I know.

I love making unexpected discoveries like this… they always manage to rejuvenate my passion for the profession and the connection to architecture of the past that directly impacts the design of today.

Near Su Gorropu, this is a typical "giant's tomb," a prehistoric (and pre-Nuraghic) burial barrow. It's about a meter wide and four meters long, hence its name, with a teensy crawlspace for an entrance. Now uncovered, was probably covered with stones and earth. I haven't dropped the ball on the 365 day project, but some of the days will have to wait to be uploaded. Tomorrow is moving day - yeah!! - and I'm not sure when we'll get internet at the new place. So.....I'll be out of sight for a while, but hope to be back soon!:)

Took my NXT kit for a spin in the crawlspace. I wanted to use only the vanilla bits, but I'll put a flashlight on net time. Also, Flickr cut off the good part past 1:30 :P

Day 129: Monday, May 9, 2011: School skylight

I love the longer days in spring and summer. The light's still bright enough during breaktime at the community chorus's Monday night rehearsals to let itself in through the big skylights in the high-school hallways. The pattern of blue panels in this one looks almost on purpose. I wonder if it is.

(Also, there's enough height between the ceiling and the roof for a second story -- or at least for one heck of an attic crawlspace. I wonder if there's anything fun up there.)

Grrrrrreat Horned MacOwl enjoys his down-time.

Most homes come with a built-in sinkhole, a basement or crawlspace that ensures a slow and steady implosion. An invisible hand is pulling downward, rending this home closer to the dirt. I couldn't imagine the feeling of making a visit to your fading memories, only to find they've died in the worst kind of way. There's a weakened beauty in defiance, standing longer than expected, outlasting a heavy snowfall to catch a winter sunset. The strange tufts of grass in this long-unmowed lawn catch the light like low waves by the sea. They crash over my feet as I brush between the thorns, and the branches of a treeline encroaching. I'm here for the shadows, and a world that's drowning under.
