For our latest project from one of my tutors, Alan, we were given a choice of four different 'Cockney ryhming slang' options. I was given a choice of; Plate of meat~ Feet, Fish Hook~ Book, Elephant trunk~ drunk and Barnet Fair~ Hair...Until now i hadnt even heard of cockney rhyming slang, so this was an interesting project for me! This was the final outcome of 'Plate of meat~ Feet'...I was attempting to piss my teachers off with this, but they were really excited about the idea and told me to do this option...I question my logic!

Teenage angst photoshop project, comically illustrating the exaggerated views from a teenager's perspective as often the 'victim' in a parental disagreement, and the thoughts of being invisible/unimportant to their parents.

I spent hours completely editing my stepdad's face in this photo, as he just couldn't get the expression of exasperation and anger right for me! Turned out ok in the end I thought, thanks to Ollie's input,

Title: Rainbows and Bonbons
Size: 750x3000mm
Date completed: 24 September 2008
Description: Final painting submitted for A-level Coursework, with side and closeup view.
Write-up:
Children can simply eat, laugh and play, but I am a child grown old.
Rainbows and Bonbons stems from my personal experience and desire to preserve my childhood fantasy. The viewer is invited to share the special connection of innocence and happiness between the child and candy. Yet, this work goes beyond portraying this childhood happiness. It is laced with deeper nuances of emotion associated not just with nostalgia, but with regret. While one can celebrate in the recollection of this simple joy, most will realize that this joy lies only in our memories.

During my second year of studying photography at college I started a coursework project inspired by a variety of books. Anyone who knows me would hardly be surprised that Agatha Christie's Poirot was the subject of one of the photoshoots for that project. The book in question was The Mysterious Affair at Styles, Agatha Christie's debut novel and Hercule Poirot's first introduction to the world.
This particular piece came about entirely by accident. I tried out a variety of different shots for this photoshoot and it was only when I started editing in Photoshop that I realised this image had the makings of a book cover. I continued experimenting with this image throughout the whole lesson that morning and then continued working on it throughout the next photography lesson.
The mug here was intended to refer to the cups mentioned by Poirot in the book and the small jar was intended to represent strychnine, which was used in the murder depicted in the book. I added some quotes from Poirot and Hastings about the coffee cups and, after several different ideas, I settled on the placement of the text within the shadow of the mug. The biggest challenge for me was choosing a font style for Agatha Christie's name and I must confess I was not particularly pleased with my choice at the time. I should add that my opinion on the font style remains the same because I feel it is too jarring in comparison to the title font, which seems to work rather well.
Bottle placed on top of a luxurious golden ribbon fastened garment. Crisped up the label so it really stood out. This was my chosen image.
Made an A3 test print on satin paper today. I'm quite relieved that this project has finally come together over the last few weeks, it was starting to look like there was no end!
My photography coursework for this year. The idea was to take 5 photos of someone in the Brighton & Hove area which would show their job or hobby. I was lucky enough to find Dave, who makes puppets.

I've posted something similar, but this time it's clearer and more positive. After an intense week at home working away, I've finished a piece of coursework, three days before the deadline! That's a wait of my shoulders.

For my A2 Art coursework, I chose a personal theme which I named, “Hidden Turmoil”. I began by choosing artists work that inspired me; I first found Julia Polonski and Peter White at an exhibition called “Art in Action”. I chose Polonski’s work because not only do I admire her techniques using charcoal, I am interested in the hidden meanings behind her work. I have seen White’s work at Art in Action and many of White’s images are created in a similar fashion; this inspired me to work in a similar way to his work because it links with my theme of broken, hidden turmoil, conflict, insecurities and hidden emotions etc. In my own work, I was encouraged to pick simple objects that have been neglected or broken to create simplistic images that show hidden turmoil and hidden emotions by the techniques I use. It also inspired me to use dark colours and shading to create a negative atmosphere and use harsh and quick strokes to add to the texture and tone. From analysing White’s work, I have learned that I can present different emotions and feelings by changing texture, colour, technique and media. I’ve also learned to manipulate the tone, mood and atmosphere that the audience feel, for example, darkening my shading or adding a dark, bland background I can make the image look hostile, lonely and disturbing or if I were to use smooth, gentle brush strokes when painting and lighter colours, the audience will feel calmer and more uplifted. I have used what I have learned in my own work to display different emotions in objects to symbolize broken lifestyles and hidden emotions that people feel; this helped my personal investigation. The most successful aspects of my project were the pieces of mum and dad on their wedding day, the sketch of mum and objects in my sketchbook and my final piece, these images turned out to be the most visually intriguing and to be the ones that triumphantly expressed hidden turmoil due to the mark making and composition. Less successful parts of my project was a biro drawing of mum and an acrylic painting in my sketchbook of mum, these pieces I feel, showed the least skill and relevance to the project, the biro drawing lacked originality and the painting in my sketchbook had no sense of form or depth. To improve on my project I would continue to work on the pieces I feel are at a lower standard until they show better skill. I would also like to develop the project on the ‘possessions’ topic and add to the perfume bottle pieces because the possessions were a very personal aspect of the project and I think the way in which I experimented with prints and ink was a really effective way to get messages across to my audience. I’d also like to improve by using more types of medium that I am unconfident with such as biro, watercolour and pastel, I think improving my skills in these areas could have improved my whole project by showing a range of experiments with different media’s.

Another coursework shot for this year, taken again in the NSB school studio. Model: Ian. The idea of replacing your eye with a lens! Inspiration came from Rubén Chase ( flic.kr/ps/wz8Sa ) who produced a similar image earlier in the year. Feedback, as always, is appreciated :)
