Dormant conveyors await a rebirth that shall never come in this abandoned grain elevator. The structure has now been vacant for over a decade. But as humans move out and the death of a mechanical giant is witnessed, nature moves in and continues the perpetual cycle of death and rebirth. The building is now home to over 5 species of birds, very large rats, and a few somewhat unfriendly raccoons. As we humans continue to modify the natural environment, nature must continue to adapt, or face extinction.
New to the Great Lakes on her first upbound trip, the Algoma Conveyor is destined for Indiana Harbor.
The Algoma Conveyor is the eighth Equinox Class vessel to join Algoma’s Domestic Dry-Bulk fleet since the first vessel, the Algoma Equinox, arrived in 2013. The Algoma Conveyor was the first and only Equinox self-unloader partially built for Algoma by the now bankrupt Nangtong Mingde shipyard. Algoma acquired the hull at auction in September, 2017 and it was then taken to the Yangzijiang shipyard for final construction. The Equinox Class fleet now includes four gearless bulkers and four self-unloaders.

The operator would normally use a remote control system to operate the belt, but manual controls are located in front of the outriggers, underneat the boom support.
The vehicle also features a tag axle.
The micromotor was a perfect choice for powering the feed belt. Shame it was never officially produced in any colors other than red.

There's a couple 1x1-1x1 brackets in the grill that are supposed to be black... Hopefully those arrive soon.

The conveyor was referred to as the "skip hoist" which pulled skip buckets (seen in the image) to the top of the furnace. One bucket contained a measured quantity of iron ore, another a measured quantity of limestone and a third a measured quantity of coke.

Originally built by English Electric in 1960 as a Class 40 diesel electric D306 and named in 1984 in memory of the Cunard cargo ship and those on board who lost their lives in the 1982 Falklands War.
In October 1987 the locomotive, disguised as D326, was used in a re-enactment of the 'Great Train Robbery' for the film 'Buster'.

Built 1969 following the merger of the New York Central and the Pennsylvania Railroad into the Penn Central Transportation Company. The conveyor enabled the transfer of coal and taconite between the formerly competing dock areas.
Here is how Norfolk-Southern currently describes the facility:
Ashtabula Coal Pier (Idled), Ashtabula, OH
The currently idled coal dock at Ashtabula, Ohio is a modern coal transshipping facility located on Lake Erie. It serves as a transload point for coals destined to electric generating utilities and cement producers in Canada and the Great Lakes Basins. The dock can handle all lake-sized vessels. Annual throughput capacity is seven million tons.
Bituminous coals from Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia origins arrive at Ashtabula in unit trains where it is then rotary dumped from the rail cars and either stored on the ground or loaded directly into self-unloading vessels for further shipment to Canadian and domestic destinations.
Group storage is available for up to 1.2 million tons, thus permitting year-round dumping. This allows producers to ship coal during the winter months when the lakes are closed.

I am having a complete mental block on the name of the bricks, but the tracks/treads slide across the top of the 'L-shaped' white bricks rather than sitting on the cogs, making the treads run smoothly and flush with the floor.
