Situated near the southern end of World Heritage listed Hinchinbrook Island, the Lucinda bulk sugar terminal boasts the longest service jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. At 5.76 kilometres long, supported by more than 660 concrete and steel pylons, the jetty is nothing short of an engineering masterpiece with its length actually following the curved contour of the earth.
Conveyor - I enjoy photographing old farm buildings. In this case an old conveyor running into an old corn crib that I photographed a last week. This is another jpg black and white that came from the Fujifilm X100V.

A risky profession
Ambalavao (Madagascar) - The work of a zebu conveyor is not easy. Not only are the journeys made on foot, sometimes over several hundred kilometers, it is a dangerous profession. In addition to the possibility of getting hit with the horn or being trampled by the herd, it is also necessary to reckon with looters.
In Madagascar, especially in the Great South, armed bands have specialized in the theft of cattle. The brigands do not just take a few heads, but seize the entire herd, sometimes consisting of a hundred zebus. Local newspapers regularly report such misdeeds and the shooting deaths of cowherds.
The conveyors are now armed with AK 47 rifles to repel possible attackers. Often, it is the gendarmes who hire out the Kalashnikovs for the duration of the journey, to those who cannot afford them.
In the Ambalavao zebu market, during my two visits, however, I did not see any firearms. According to the police captain who supervised the market, weapons are confiscated by his men time the market. A wise precaution because often when the business has been good, alcohol can flow freely. And the sugar cane alcohol quickly heated the spirits.

Feeding a hungry young Kookaburra is a full time job, just watch these adults as they feed one of two juveniles. Knowing they have a thankless task, I put out strips of sliced meat to help them.
I made this video a couple of years ago and am happy to report that the hungry juvenile in this video still visits looking for something to eat. She sits on the fence and waits patiently, and if I don't appear she announces her presence with a little chuckle.
"Where is my beautiful girl?" I ask, and she flies to me. Most days she visits two or three times, she has a small snack, I talk to her and she responds with little sounds. When she's done, she wipes her beak on her perch and flies away.
As a youngster she could fly down and perch on my shoulder without her wing touching me. I would hold food up to her and she would take it from my hand. We don't do that any more, these days we have a more mature relationship. To me, she is a most wonderful bird and I love her dearly.

The surviving braces of the conveyor belt used to transfer coal to the storage facilities on Hashima (Gunkanjima) island, where it was kept before being loaded on ships. Between 1891 and 1974 Hashima’s mine produced about 16 million tons of coal. The highest annual output was in 1941, with 410000 tons of coal extracted from the 3 (at the time) shafts. Miners plunged into the earth up to a kilometer below sea level, at excavation sites as far as 2 km away.
