Prime Minister Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa stated that the contribution by the Honganji Foundation led by the most Ven. Ohtani Chohjun towards strengthening the relations between Sri Lanka and Japan over the decades has been monumental. The Prime Minister stated the above attending the ceremony of awarding the Great Sasana Ratna Award and the presenting of the Sannaspathra to the Most Ven. Ohtani Chohjun Thero of Honganji Foundation & Temple of Japan at the Parliamentary Complex today (18) morning.
The Honganji Foundation Cultural Promotion Foundation of Japan consisting of a long history, has contributed immensely to the improvement of the socio-economic and cultural ties of the Buddhist community worldwide. Whilst emphasizing that Japan and Sri Lanka have stood by each other during difficult times, President Mahinda Rajapaksa thanked The Honganji Foundation for opening a Japanese Gallery at the New International Buddhist Museum in Sri Lanka.
The Prime Minister also added that the Most Ven. Ohtani Chohjun is the cousin brother of his Majesty the previous Emperor of Japan, and is an elite academic of the University of Tokyo and the University of Sorbonne in France and is a well-known lecturer at Nagoya State University. The Most Ven. Ohtani Chohjun was also recognized for his contributions in developing interconnections between Mahayana Buddhism and Theravada Buddhism.
This occasion was graced by the participation of the Speaker of Parliament Hon. Karu Jayasuriya, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Hon. Ananda Kumarasiri, Leader of the House Hon. Objectives of the Plenary Session on Communications:
• Provide clear understanding on the need for effective communication for forests in the context of climate change, with special emphasis on the Mediterranean region;
• Showcase successful and compelling case studies on how to communicate with stakeholders, local communities and the general public;
The Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is hosting the Sixth edition of the Mediterranean Forest Week (VIth MWF) at the Grand Hills Hotel, Broumana, on 1–5 April 2019. The weeklong event brings together policy and decision makers, forest administrators, researchers, practitioners, donors, civil society organizations, and social and environmental based non–governmental organizations to share and promote the use of forest–based solutions to assist Mediterranean countries in the implementation of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

The LEGO Foundation and UNICEF support conflict-affected children in Iraq through play
Baghdad, 16 December 2015 – UNICEF Iraq received a contribution from the LEGO Foundation that will help give around 50,000 children in Iraq a chance to play and learn. The organizations welcomed the contribution of 4,800 boxes containing LEGO play materials. The donation is part of the three-year global partnership between UNICEF and the LEGO Foundation signed in early 2015. Through the partnership, the two organizations promote quality early learning through play for children around the world. While play helps children address stress, it also performs a critical role in the development of the intellectual, emotional, social and creative skills needed to build the foundation for human development and lifelong learning.
Iraq has seen decades of conflict. Currently, nearly 3 million children have had their education disrupted, and nearly 1 million are internally displaced. Furthermore, over 100,000 Syrian children have taken refuge in Iraq.
Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Ján Kubiš, reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to children. “Many Iraqi children bear emotional scars from the violence around them, but it is those rendered homeless by conflict who suffer the heaviest consequences. Millions of children, in camps for displaced people and refugees as well as those in host communities have limited or no access to education or recreational activities. It is with their predicament in mind that UNAMI and UNICEF called on LEGO for assistance to extend children affected by the crisis in Iraq with a combination of study and play in the form of creative toys, which might be the first for many of them since they lost their homes and possessions. The donation from LEGO Foundation should be a reminder to Iraqi politicians of the responsibility they share for the future generations, who deserve to live a life of peace and normalcy.”
Generations of children in Iraq have grown up in the midst of conflict, and have witnessed unimaginable acts of extreme violence and have been displaced from their homes and communities. Some children have been displaced multiple times as conflict reaches their new homes. “The opportunity given by the LEGO Foundation should also be used to call for more support to humanitarian programmes, particularly child protection,” Kubiš added.
Representing UNAMI at the delivery ceremony in Baghdad, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Gyorgy Busztin appealed to the Iraqi politicians to think about the children of Iraq as they “are the hardest hit by violence and lack of stability. Their fate needs to be the responsibility of all decision makers. We want for them a happy future, away from violence, conflict and displacement in a country that provides equal rights to all its men, women and children. We want national reconciliation for Iraq that will give back to the children of Iraq what they were deprived of, play, learning and happiness, in other words a full childhood. The LEGO toys will teach them to build so that in the future they will be able to reconstruct their villages and towns ruined by terrorism. They will prove that building is superior to destruction” added DSRSG Busztin.
“The negative impact of this crisis on children cannot be over-emphasized,” said Peter Hawkins, UNICEF Representative in Iraq. “Continuing violence has cheated millions of children of their fundamental rights to safety, education and play. Many children have come into this world and grown up knowing only displacement and conflict. The donation from the LEGO Foundation is one positive step forward, allowing some of the most disadvantaged children to play and learn in a fun and safe environment and become the next generation to build a better future for Iraq.”
“Play is the most effective and inspiring way for children to acquire the skills needed to create new possibilities and meet the many challenges of the future. In the midst of violence and instability, playing and education can help to alleviate trauma for conflict-affected children,” said Mirjam Schöning, Global Head of Programmes and Partnerships at the LEGO Foundation. “Through play, children can address stress and develop physical, intellectual and social skills, as well as creativity. Together with UNICEF, we work to put a stake in the ground for children and their development through quality play-based learning.”
The LEGO play materials will be distributed to 538 schools, 46 community centres and 8 child-friendly spaces across Iraq, giving over 50,000 children access to learning activities. The LEGO Foundation and UNICEF will provide training to build the capacity of teachers, facilitators and community members who will then guide children through LEGO activities as part of the initiative.

This photograph was taken on 22 September 2013 by Barry Howard at the annual memorial service at the Jim Comerford Miners Memorial Wall in Aberdare. The service was attended by many dignitaries and families of miners killed in the industry.
This photograph is from the collection of Barry Howard, who was an electrician at local coal mines such as Hebburn No. 2 and Northern (Rhondda) Colliery, and at Saxonvale Colliery, further up the Hunter Valley. Mr Howard has very kindly permitted us to to publish these photographs on this website for the benefit of researchers and for those who served in the mines and their families.

By the way, Rom Whitaker, the Yankee herpetologist who founded the Croc Bank (and later became a Rolex Award winner), was the subject of a TV program I made for the Mutsugoro series. Rom attended Kodaikanal International School, and it was through getting to know him that I sent our kids to KIS. So the guy has a lot to answer for :-)

Philadelphia, commonly referred to as Philly, is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and the second-most populous city in the Northeast megalopolis and Mid-Atlantic regions after New York City. Philadelphia is known for its extensive contributions to United States history, especially the American Revolution, and served as the nation's capital until 1800. It maintains contemporary influence in business and industry, culture, sports, and music. Philadelphia is the nation's sixth-most populous city with a population of 1,603,797 as of the 2020 census and is the urban core of the larger Delaware Valley (or Philadelphia metropolitan area), the nation's seventh-largest and one of the world's largest metropolitan regions consisting of 6.245 million residents in the metropolitan statistical area and 7.366 million residents in its combined statistical area.
Philadelphia was founded in 1682 by William Penn, an English Quaker and advocate of religious freedom. The city served as the capital of the Pennsylvania Colony during the British colonial era and went on to play a historic and vital role as the central meeting place for the nation's founding fathers whose plans and actions in Philadelphia ultimately inspired the American Revolution and the nation's independence following the Revolutionary War. Philadelphia hosted the First Continental Congress in 1774, preserved the Liberty Bell, and hosted the Second Continental Congress during which the founders signed the Declaration of Independence, which historian Joseph Ellis has described as "the most potent and consequential words in American history". Once the Revolutionary War commenced, the Battle of Germantown and the siege of Fort Mifflin were fought within Philadelphia's city limits. The U.S. Constitution was later ratified in Philadelphia at the Philadelphia Convention of 1787. The Museum of the American Revolution, formerly The American Revolution Center, is a museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania dedicated to telling the story of the American Revolution. The museum was opened to the public on April 19, 2017, the 242nd anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, some of the battles of the American Revolutionary War, on April 19, 1775.
The museum is located at 101 South Third St. in Philadelphia, the city that served as the revolutionary capital during America's founding. The site is across the street from the First Bank of the United States and two blocks from Independence Hall, the National Constitution Center, Second Bank of the United States, American Philosophical Society, Carpenters' Hall, and the Liberty Bell.

My friend Carmen organized a Sit-n-stitch to make contributions to the Uterus Flag Project which is currently on display at Carmen's library. The project by artist Terilynn highlights "craftivism" to provide a platform for discussing womens' health and the medicalization of womens' bodies.
