My wife and my English bulldog shot under continuous soft box lighting

This home is alive, and not in the way you'd like. While it might have been rocking with this album of continuous dancing, there are other things buzzing these days. The raccoons have taken hold, and mold of every description, along with more species of feces than I could name or number. There's a horrible hothouse that happens, when the weather gets in but never out. Nature shoulders space inside but can't escape, the animals that enter don't always find an exit to the maze. Some will die here, birds bashed against the glass or crawling creatures who misplace the hole that let them in. Dereliction is a death trap, and full of life just the same. There is nowhere on earth that provides so much risk and reward, shelter and surrender, benevolent murderous intent.

Kinetic: Relating to, caused by, or producing motion.

These are called “Kinetic” photographs because there is motion, energy, and movement involved, specifically my and the camera’s movements.

I choose a light source and/or subject, set my camera for a long exposure (typically around 4 seconds), focus on my subject and push the shutter button. When the shutter opens I move the camera around with my hands...large, sweeping, dramatic movements. And then I will literally throw the camera several feet up into the air, most times imparting a spinning or whirling motion to it as I hurl it upward. I may throw the camera several times and also utilize hand-held motion several times in one photo. None of these are Photoshopped, layered, or a composite photo...what you see occurs in one shot, one take.

Aren’t I afraid that I will drop and break my camera? For regular followers of my photostream and this series you will know that I have already done so. This little camera has been dropped many times, and broken once when dropped on concrete outside. It still functions...not so well for regular photographs, but superbly for more kinetic work.

Monastery of St. Catherine on the Sinai Peninsula, at the mouth of an inaccessible gorge at the foot of Mount Sinai, in Egypt is one of the oldest continuously functioning Christian monasteries. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Saint Catherine was a Christian martyr initially sentenced to death on the wheel. However, when this failed to kill her, she was beheaded. According to tradition, angels took her remains to Mount Sinai. Around the year 800, monks from the Sinai Monastery found her remains. At this time Egypt was a Muslim country so this Christian monastery in the enormous mountain passes of Sinai could use an Egyptian saint from the Early Church.

St. Catherine's Monastery possesses some of the earliest icons in existence, including this 6th-century hot wax icon.

The monastery was built by order of Emperor Justinian I between 527 and 565, enclosing the Chapel of the Burning Bush ordered built by Helena, the mother of Constantine I, at the site where Moses is supposed to have seen the burning bush; the living bush on the grounds is purportedly the original. The site is sacred to three major world religions - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Though it is commonly known as Saint Catherine's, the actual name of the monastery is the Monastery of the Transfiguration. The site was associated with St. Catherine of Alexandria (whose relics were purported to have been miraculously transported there by angels) and it became a favorite site for pilgrimages.

The monastery library preserves the second largest collection of early codices and manuscripts in the world, outnumbered only by the Vatican Library. Its strength lies in Greek, Coptic, Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, and Syriac texts.

The complex houses irreplaceable works of art: mosaics, Greek and Russian icons, encaustic paintings, as well as sacerdotal ornaments, chalices and reliquaries. Most importantly, it is home to some of the earliest icons in the world, dating to the 5th and 6th centuries. The oldest icon on the Old Testament theme is also preserved there. A project to catalogue the works held in the library is currently being undertaken.

Samarkand is a city in southeastern Uzbekistan and among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia. Samarkand is the capital of the Samarkand Region and a district-level city, that includes the urban-type settlements Kimyogarlar, Farhod and Khishrav. With 551,700 inhabitants (2021)] it is the third-largest city in Uzbekistan.

There is evidence of human activity in the area of the city dating from the late Paleolithic Era. Though there is no direct evidence of when Samarkand was founded, several theories propose that it was founded between the 8th and 7th centuries BC. Prospering from its location on the Silk Road between China, Persia and Europe, at times Samarkand was one of the largest cities in Central Asia, and was an important city of the empires of Greater Iran. By the time of the Persian Achaemenid Empire, it was the capital of the Sogdian satrapy. The city was conquered by Alexander the Great in 329 BC, when it was known as Markanda, which was rendered in Greek as Μαράκανδα. The city was ruled by a succession of Iranian and Turkic rulers until it was conquered by the Mongols under Genghis Khan in 1220.

The city is noted as a centre of Islamic scholarly study and the birthplace of the Timurid Renaissance. In the 14th century, Timur made it the capital of his empire and the site of his mausoleum, the Gur-e Amir. The Bibi-Khanym Mosque, rebuilt during the Soviet era, remains one of the city's most notable landmarks. Samarkand's Registan square was the city's ancient centre and is bounded by three monumental religious buildings. The city has carefully preserved the traditions of ancient crafts: embroidery, goldwork, silk weaving, copper engraving, ceramics, wood carving, and wood painting. In 2001, UNESCO added the city to its World Heritage List as Samarkand – Crossroads of Cultures.

Modern Samarkand is divided into two parts: the old city, which includes historical monuments, shops, and old private houses; and the new city, which was developed during the days of the Russian Empire and Soviet Union and includes administrative buildings along with cultural centres and educational institutions. On 15 and 16 September 2022, the city hosted the 2022 SCO summit.

Samarkand has a multicultural and plurilingual history that was significantly modified by the process of national delimitation in Central Asia. Many inhabitants of the city are native or bilingual speakers of the Tajik language, whereas Uzbek is the official language and Russian is also widely used in the public sphere, as per Uzbekistan's language policy.

Plants are in a continuous battle with hemipterans (sap sucking bugs which have a long proboscis which they stick into the plant and through the plant’s own pressure they fill up the bug with the sugary phloem (sap).).This has led to an evolutionary arms race. It is not only the purloining of precious, hard earned sugars which is hard to accept for the plants, but these bugs also carry a variety of pathogens which can be transmitted to the plant via their unauthorized visitations. So the plants have developed a variety of defences, both physical and chemical. One such method is the introduction of small peptides into their sap which upon contact with air solidify, gumming up the mouthparts of any insect, and serving the dual function of forming a scab over the cut surface preventing further infection. This has stopped some insects though others have found a way around this. Chemical deterrence is another route that some plants have gone down. Toxic alkaloids or indigestible peptides laced with the sought after foodstuffs is a popular strategy. Though some insects have not only found a way around this, but have even exploited it to their advantage! Monarchs for instance feed on the toxic milkweed. Not only do they not suffer from the toxic alkaloids present in the plant, but they accumulate it and use it to in a similar way, so that they become unpalatable to avian predators. Together with their aposematic colouration, birds have learned to avoid them. Neotropical insects have developed along similar lines. To further complicate matters you have ants. These are both protectors and little Benedict Arnolds, selling out to the highest bidder – where the currency is sugar of course. When you can’t beat them, farm them! Plants have a love/hate relationship with ants. They have developed extrafloral nectaries for the purpose of luring ants to defend them from parasites and predators. This strategy is so effective that many species even those that are exclusively predatory, like trapjaw ants (Odontomachus sp.), can be seen patrolling the leaves of nectary producing plants. Plants that haven't developed extrafloral nectaries may also lure ants unintentionally since even leafbuds can sometimes produce sugary water through the ‘breathing’ of the stomata. But ants go where the sugar is, and so sometimes if a plant has become host to hemipterans, then ants will simply farm these invaders and reap the sugary benefits to the detriment of the plants. The complex interrelationships make for interesting study! Ants aren’t too picky about what they farm as long as they get the honeydew in return. Found during a night hike in Iwokrama rainforest reserve.

God only knows. The adventure starts here- pbertner.wordpress.com/.

A few shots I did for a few models looking to update their portfolios with a simple 3 light setup this was my first time working with continuous lighting but I think these came out well---

Guess it was about time I gave an update on the rotting apple and as I just received a new ring light in the post today, it seemed an ideal subject to test it on :)

You will have to excuse the over-exposure at the bottom, I hadnt taken into account the amount of reflected light bouncing off the sheet of paper that I placed it on. So I did learn something from my first test, LOL.

I have wanted a ring flash for a long time, but was too lazy to make one and those that were offered commercially, looked pretty fragile, or very expensive. Then recently I spotted these on Ebay and they looked ideal, plus the price was low enough to take a chance.

It is a Meike FC100 LED Macro Ring Flash and for just £20 ($30 approx) I just couldnt resist :)

First impressions are very good and it is so easy to instal on the camera and start using. This shot was taken in it's continuous light mode, which made it so easy for focussing. I did also try it as a flash, which was equally effective, though the duration of the flash, was a lot longer than with a conventional flash, so may not be ideal for freezing movement.

Really looking forward to playing and experimenting more, but that unfortunately will have to go on hold for a few days, as real work has to take priority for now :(

The vehicle was moving with 40 km/h directly against the camera - the AF-C mode was able to hold on the target. Very good performance for a compact camera.

Continuous Light. I could not get the speedlights to fire. I put a big 500w bulb in the ceiling for the hairlight, but it melted the plastic components in the light fixture. The only light that you see is coming from a 500w Mini Sun. I am surprised the exposure turned out this well. [Thanx to 1100 ISO. The Mini Sun actually produces a catch light.

The great thing about photography is you don't need expensive costumes. This mink coat is kind of worn. Since the model is perfect, she can wear cheap Chinese garments that they sell on Ebay.

I like the leopard print backdrop because I don't need to put it in the dryer with fabric softener.

by request, this is a simplified diagram of how to set up continuous lighting via the battery. this is not a comprehensive diagram of all the mods.

note:

after comparing with the stock toy, mods 1 and 3 affect the light pattern of the toy to flash all on or off at the same time. if that is acceptable, this is the way to do it. if you would like to keep the light pattern, inline diodes need to be added to each led path, between the solder points on the toy circuit board and the dpdt switch. further investigation on this might be needed.

the leds are illustrated just to show the connections. they don't need to be soldered.

what needs to be soldered are:

1. the indicated open solder pads on the circuit board. since these are all connected via a jumper they all get connected to the ground side of the mod switch, which leads to

2. the ground battery terminal closest to the inner ring.

3.the positive battery terminal gets soldered to the positive side of the mod switch

4. the positive side of the mod switch gets soldered to a positive terminal on the circuit board.

everything coming out of or into the mod switch in this diagram is a wire added to the toy to make the connection. that's eight wires for the leds, two positive wires, and one ground wire.

refer to the photos for the exact locations of these solder points and further details on how it was done. kthxbai

Visiting London for some pre-Christmas spirit is something I have been doing for many years continuously but to my luck it hadn’t snowed during my visits expect for this year. To my luck it only snowed lightly, so yes!…Despite the rain showers and snow I still have a lot of outfits to show you.

As mentioned before I love investing in carry-over classic items when it comes to high end brands. Today I was wearing my classic Marni lace-ups. If you’re a fan of brogues-style shoes then you will love those. They’re not exactly brogues as they don’t have the decorative perforations or broguing but they’re simply brogues-shoe shaped with the same lace-ups. That’s for the shoe. Now the accessory on top…the lace-up fringe. The Marni lace-up fringe piece can be changed to your liking…mine is white here as the white fringe comes with the burgundy shoe but I have a few fringe colors ordered on their way already!

I styled the shoes with my white Sophie Rue shorts, a Topshop shirt, Markus Lupfer (x Linda Farrow) shades and the classic Python Lulu Guinness clutch.

Oaks Amusement Park Carousel World Wide Photo Walk Carousel 1912 "Herschell-Spillman" Carousel

Tucked away in Southeast Portland near the Sellwood Bridge is Oaks Amusement Park, one of the oldest continuously operated amusement parks in the United States.

Oaks Park is a modest amusement park located 3.5 miles (6 km) south of downtown Portland, Oregon, USA

Story by David F. Ashton ~

"Today’s best estimates are that the figures were carved starting in 1912, by the Italian and German woodworkers at the Herschell–Spillman company’s offshoot, Spillman Engineering Corporation. “Our carousel was one of the last to have had its figures carved completely by hand,” Norling said proudly.

"Having survived repeated floods, and the theft of a figure in the 1970s, the Oaks Park Carousel was last refinished almost forty years ago — and has only been touched up since then. "

"“It hasn’t ever been restored like we did this time,” declared Norling, “Eight of our staff members took it apart to sand and hand-etch away layers of paint – taking each piece down to bare wood. Because they cleaned into the crevasses, you can really see the detail in the horses’ manes and eyes.”

Where necessary, workers repaired broken pieces, blending them in with the original wood, as they restored the historic carousel to its original grandeur.

The Oaks Park Carousel is recorded in the National Register of Historic Places, and is said to be one of only 200 classic carousels remaining in the world."

Interesting side note~

In carousels all over the world, there has always been the "favorite" animals to ride. This caused problems with small children all wanting a particular horse... So when Walt Disney put his Carousel in Disneyland... He made all the horses "white" to avoid the problem, and get people on faster so they could start the ride.

I spent 3 hours Saturday 7/24/10 getting to photograph a Carousel here in Portland Oregon, before the amusement park opened.

It was amazing.

As part of the British Railways Modernisation Plan of the late 1950s, one of the major changes to freight carriage was the introduction of continuous braking to freight wagons so as to improve speed and reliability. Previously individually braked wagons had to run at slower speeds, impeding traffic flows. One of the sadder aspects of the Modernisation Plan was that BR was unable to foresee the rapid decline in railway freight traffic that led to a massive over provision of freight infrastructure - both wagons, locomotives and freight yards. This image, taken from a Transport Age article, has no details nor location but - someone in Flickrland will know I'm sure!
