The Lacon Bridge is a continuous through bridge over the Illinois River on Illinois Route 17 at Lacon in Marshall County. Built in 1939, it is one of the oldest crossings of the Illinois River. The bridge was rehabilitated in 1990, and is tentatively scheduled for repairs to the structural steel, painting the entire structure, concrete repairs to the piers and abutments, and repairing the existing lighting in 2023.

This bridge has a distinctive appearance because its top chord and end posts visually seem comparatively smaller than one would expect to the point where they do not look much larger or heavier than the other truss members. As such, from a visual standpoint, all the members and chords on the bridge look to be about the same size. This is quite different from a traditional bridge of this design.

This is one of those bridges that looks exactly like a cantilever truss, with a variable depth truss forming "towers" over the piers, however it appears to lack hinges which means that it functions as a continuous truss, not a cantilever truss. As such, it does not have a suspended span. A series of steel stringer spans provide an approach to the through truss spans.

Marshall County, located in north central Illinois, is primarily an agriculture county. Lacon, the county seat, is the second most populous city in the county behind Henry with a recorded population of 1,878 at the 2020 census.

The Cape Buffalo is the largest sub-species of the African Buffalo. The adult African buffalo's horns are its characteristic feature: they have fused bases, forming a continuous bone shield across the top of the head referred to as a "boss". It is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous animals on the African continent, and according to some estimates it gores, tramples, and kills over 200 people every year.

The African Buffalo is not an ancestor of domestic cattle and is only distantly related to other larger bovines. Its unpredictable temperament may have been part of the reason that the African buffalo has never been domesticated, unlike its Asian counterpart, the water buffalo. Natural predators of adult African buffaloes include lions, hyenas, large crocodiles and humans. (Wikipedia)

The Yellow-billed Oxpecker sitting on the buffalo's head is a bulbul-sized olive-brown bird that sports a diagnostic red-tipped yellow bill, a red eye without an eye-wattle, and a pale buff rump. Small groups occur in savanna and farmland, where they require large wild ungulates and domestic stock to forage on; they clamber agilely over host mammals, gleaning ticks, mites and other ectoparasites, and occasionally drinking host blood. As they fly between large mammals, they give a distinctive sizzling-crackle call. (eBird)

The graveyard at St Matthias Church in the little hamlet of Windermere deeply reflects its history. Built in 1843, you get that sense of 180 years of continuous history and the passing of generations right up to the present day. It is especially beautiful at twilight, even on wet and dull days like this one.

With this photo I wanted to capture that sense of peaceful calm and the natural fading light. Twilight comes for us all.

The African buffalo or Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is a large Sub-Saharan African bovine. Syncerus caffer caffer, the Cape buffalo, is the typical subspecies found in South and East Africa. The adult buffalo's horns are its characteristic feature: they have fused bases, forming a continuous bone shield across the top of the head referred to as a "boss".

Cape Buffalo are suspected to kill around 200 people every year. They typically will charge and gore their victims and have been known to trample people as well. When you see Cape Buffalo roaming in Africa, they're usually not alone. Weighing in at over 1500 lbs, even most lions don't dare bother hunting this aggressive beast unless the lions are in a huge pride. – Wikipedia

The Nord/LB administration building was built between 1998 and 2002 and designed by the architectural firm Behnisch, Behnisch & Partner.

The 18 floors of the high-rise do not follow a strict rectangular arrangement, but are arranged in blocks and twisted against each other. With the exception of the top three floors, there are no two identical ceilings in the tower: the floors are not only partially twisted against each other, but also set back from each other. The tower is stabilized, among other things, by the adjacent parts of the building and a continuous fire shaft running to the rear. However, two steel composite supports carry the majority of the load. They are therefore 1 m thick and partly run outdoors for balance reasons. To prevent the supports from shortening in low temperatures, they must be heated in winter.

One of the main reasons for making an early morning trip over to Fishercap Lake from the Many Glacier Hotel was the mirror-like reflection that is often found on mornings with little to no wind. As the wind was still howling the night night before, we were very relieved to find that the wind had disappeared by the time we met at 5:30 AM and after shooting Swiftcurrent, we made a beeline to Fishercap and arrived just as the light was beginning to warm up. It was an incredible morning as there were stunning views in every direction and I had to continuously divide my attention between the moose, (I still want to say "Mooses" or "Meese" but apparently neither is correct for some reason) and the deer who kept wandering into my frame. Fishercap is often overlooked as the surrounding peaks and lakes are stunning, but if you find yourself in the Many Glacier Hotel at some point in the future, you might want to make a quick trip over there during the early morning hours for the wildlife and some stunning early morning views.

Poike, the oldest volcano:

The Poike volcano was the first piece of land that emerged from the sea and, together with subsequent volcanic eruptions, formed the present territory of Easter Island. Its somewhat remote and isolated location and its difficult access make Poike a little-visited place. However, this mysterious territory contains secret corners and ancient legends that invite to discover it calmly and to know better the past of the island.

Poike, the first volcano on the island:

The name of Poike, usually translated by “hill”, seems to come from the Rapanui expression “Po” (night); “ike” (break) which means “place where the night breaks” because it is the first place on the island that receives the first rays of the rising sun.

Indeed, the Poike is located at the eastern end of Easter Island, and is the oldest of the three main volcanoes on the island, next to the Rano Kau and the Ma’unga Terevaka, which originated their formation. It is estimated that this first eruptive center emerged from the sea about 3 million years ago creating the so-called Poike Peninsula, although its activity was maintained until about 300 thousand years ago. Originally this peninsula was an island but later it was joined to the main body of the island, by lava flows coming from the Terevaka and other nearby volcanic centers.

The Poike is now an inactive volcano with a fairly symmetrical cone shape. The main crater has a circular shape and by its resemblance to a halo of sun or moon was called Pua Katiki, although in another version its name would mean “hill that serves to monitor the cattle.” Unlike other craters, this is totally dry and measures around 150 meters in diameter and about 10 meters deep. Inside a small eucalyptus forest grows that crowns the summit like a leafy green plume visible from afar.

From Pua Katiki, where the Poike reaches a maximum height of 460 meters, a wide plain of gentle slope is observed. which covers an area of about 4.5 km from east to west and 3.5 km from north to south. This large area, almost exclusively covered by a type of grass called here hoi (Sporobolus indicus), ends abruptly on 100-meter-high coastal cliffs formed by the continuous erosion of the sea on the Poike peninsula.

_______________________________________________

For some unknown reason, during the period of construction of the large statues, considered the golden age of the island, it is believed that the inhabitants of the Poike peninsula remained separate from the others and hardly participated in the work of carving in the quarries of Rano Raraku.

One proof of its isolation is that only two of the statues found in the Poike are made of the lapilli tuff of the Rano Raraku, while the rest of the statues were made of the white trachyte coming from the Poike deposits.

Opposite the "dark corner" (picture in the first comment below), the "bright" corner of my yard has full sun. There is a continuous show of perennial flowers from early Spring to late summer. Bright yellow lilies start off, followed by yellow sedum. As they fade, the purple phlox emerge and stay all summer, and the yellow Black Eyed Susan join shortly after. A row of tall Helianthus in back will emerge in late summer.

The best part is that they are all perennials (no planting needed) : )

This is one of the main streets in Fez”s old medina as you can see cars are not part of the scene . We were in Morocco in 2005 staying in Fez ams Marrakech, I much preferred Fez. The Medina is an amazing place a maze of unnamed streets we regularly got lost in. On one occasion we paid two young kids to show us the way to hotel. Still it was great fun a little like stepping back in time.

The Medina of Fez is listed as a World Heritage Site and is one of the world's largest and oldest urban pedestrian zones. It contains the University of al-Qarawiyyin which was founded in 857 and is the oldest continuously functioning institute of higher education in the world. It also contains the Chouara Tannery from the 11th century, one of the oldest tanneries in the world.

The snow that day was not very heavy, but the cold was intense and the wind was continuous, so that it stuck to the walls and trees, giving these very graphic effects.

Ce jour-là était tombé une neige peu abondante, mais le froid était vif et le vent continu, ce qui a eu pour effet de la coller aux murs et aux arbres, procurant ces effets très graphiques.

Continuous below freezing temperatures have kept the creek freezing and aqua colored, 40 degrees expected tomorrow, may all change...

It snowed on and off all day today; at times I couldn't see two meters ahead of me. We've had it unconventionally well this year that many were surprised at the above-average temperatures and little snow. Well, here it all comes in a package: snow, wind, snow, wind, and chill, chill, chill. We're expecting a -39 with wind-chill effects in some areas around us (Southwestern Ontario). Still, not complaints. The kids are having the time of their lives and are enjoying every inch of snow... Wish you all a warm weekend! Stay warm...

The Chinguetti Mosque is a mosque in Chinguetti, Mauritania. It was an ancient center of worship created by the founders of the oasis city of Chinguetti in the Adrar region of Mauritania in the thirteenth or fourteenth century. The minaret of this ancient structure is supposed to be the second oldest in continuous use anywhere in the Muslim world.

In the 1970s the mosque was restored through a UNESCO effort, but it, along with the city itself, continues to be threatened by intense desertification.

In 1996 the old town of Chinguetti was added to the Unesco world heritage list, together with the old towns of Ouadane, Tichitt and Oualata.

In Sunni Islam, Chinguetti is generally regarded as the 7th holy city.

The Town Hall of the Hanseatic City of Stralsund is a building built in the North German Brick Gothic style, the construction of which dates back to the years 1300-1310. Continuous extensions and renovations allowed for a mix of architectural styles right up to the 19th century. The building on Alter Markt is one of the most important secular buildings in the Baltic Sea region and is also the symbol of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. It stands in the heartland of the city area recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as part of the historic old towns of Stralsund and Wismar.

We have red kites flying over our house most days, and this afternoon I decided to have a go at taking an image of one. I have aimed my camera at them before, but not had a recognisable result. Today I used continuous auto focusing and tracking using the hi speed facility, and after some post processing managed to capture one. I am now encouraged to try again.

This area has repeatedly been occupied then abandoned over a span of a thousand years or more.

Patrice

GENERATION

In honor of Florence, my granddaughter, who spontaneously suggested the title of this image.

__________

On these shores bordered by infinity, a father introduces his young son to the art of shallow-water fishing. At first glance, one might think this is a simple fishing scene, yet...

In our societies, the idea of generation is often reduced to a static opposition between past and future, between old and new. Instead, it should be seen as a movement, a continuous movement of transfer and evolution of knowledge and human mentalities. In short, this transfer, particularly through filiations (kinship), allows the original to remain original and to continue the human adventure.* What we call the future is, in fact, the result of all these generations interacting.

._________

Here, on these shores far removed from the utopian worlds that fuel the fury of our societies, father and son reconnect with the patience and fundamental modesty of being. Also with the original enchantment in front of the beauty and mystery of our world.

Fishing was a good excuse for this.

Patrice
