This is Saint Alban's Church on Deansway in Worcester. It may have it's origins in Roman times, but there may have been a church on this site since c.720. The present building is at least early Norman (c.1175). Some of the stone work might be Anglo-Saxon.
It was heavily restored in the 19th and 20th centuries.
It is named after the first British Martyr, who was a soldier in the Roman Army. He converted to Christianity by a fugitive priest who gave him shelter. They switched identies so that he could be martyred in the priests place.
His tomb was liked so much, that a church was built on the site, and around it the town of St Albans.
These days the church is no longer a church but a day centre called Magg's Day Centre. It is a Grade II listed building and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Parish church, now day centre. C12 with later additions and alterations including restorations and alterations of c1821-1850. Coursed red and green sandstone with double pitch slate and plain tile roof. Small church with continuous 3-bay nave and single-bay chancel with north aisle. Norman, Early English and neo-Norman. Chamfered plinth. Entrance to north side a round-arched doorway with 1 order of columns with cushion capitals and roll-moulding to head in chamfered reveals, all renewed; plank door. 2 round-arched windows with 1 order of slender columns and roll-moulding to head, renewed, with blocked narrow opening between and large intel. East end has 3 stepped lancets to chancel with oculus over and lancet to aisle. West end has 2 renewed trefoil-headed lancets and continuous hoodmould; small rose window over. West gable bell cote. Coped gable ends. INTERIOR: the North arcade is Late Norman with round piers and round abaci, double-chamfered arches, one scalloped capital and one flat-leaf capital, nailhead ornament in the hoodmould (mostly recut). Probably Victorian tile floor. Monuments: wall monument to Marci, wife of William Wyatt d.1595; wall monument to Edmund Wyatt d.1711 a cartouche with winged cherubs and drapery; another wall tablet c1796. Scheduled Ancient Monument. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner: N: Worcestershire: Harmondsworth: 1968-1985: 317).
Last year all the huge trees hanging over the tunnel portal and along the tracks were removed. This year track panels were removed, mud spots dug out and new panels and fresh ballast were installed. All panels were welded the next day to create Continuous Welded Rail. (CWR)

The Vienna Prater
Lieblingsnahausflugsziel (favourite nearby excursion destination) in Biedermeier Vienna is the Prater. The season opens with the race of "noble runners" on May 1. The usually before the carriages of the nobility running lackeys on that day line up under high bets to public competition. The main avenue along to the pleasure house (Lusthaus) and back drag the racers to the cheers of the audience. Trumpet-blasts, flags and cash prizes await the winner. Military music they escorts into the first Prater coffee house where them a splendid breakfast is arranged, while the ones having fallen by the wayside are collected. This race is banned in 1848 because of inhumanity. In the afternoon swayed - as from now on every Sunday - people and cars down the hunter line (Jägerzeile - since 1862 Prater Road). The state-carriages of the Court, the nobility and the wealthy bourgeoisie to evening make in a continuous parade the main street with its lofty Prater coffee houses to a "Nobel Prater".

The people has fun in the Wurstelprater (Hanswurst, clowning on Vienna stages) in a tangle of guest houses and Prater lodges, puppet booths, calendula games and swings between the Prater harpists, salami sellers and spectacle. Here is the stronghold of the showmen with their monkey theater and flea circus, jugglers and fire-eaters, giants and dwarfs, menageries, panoramas, wax figures and ghostly apparitions. On the "Zirkuswiese" in Circus gymnasticus the popular equestrian companies by Christoph de Bach (? 1808) and Alexander Guerra perform. One camps in the Prater floodplains and waits until at nightfall on the "fireworks meadow" Stuwer (? 1802) lets shoot up his sparkling rockets.

The historically grown amusement park looks back to a rich history. First documentary references of that area, which originally had jungle-like character, go back to the 12th Century. The former imperial hunting ground in 1766 under the "popular" Austrian Emperor Joseph II was made accessible to the public. Soon after, a number of small entertainment venues (carousels, shooting galleries, food stalls, ...) arrived, entertaining the people and also providing for the physical well-being.
The inhabitants of Vienna enjoyed themselves by riding artfully designed Hutschpferden (swing horses) and by swinging into lofty altitudes. In the process you could with long poles jab into rings. Hence the name carousel. It had been created recreational devices for the general public.
The fireworks of Stuwer and the balloon ascents end of the 18th Century dragged the Viennese from the city to the fairgrounds in the Prater. Following the trend of the times were national artistic institutions (theaters, waxworks museum and people museum - "Präuschers panopticon" with 2,000 objects, Vivarium, Planetarium, ... ) built and connected to the hustle and bustle. Sensations in the old Prater were the Abnormitätenshows (abnormalities) in which Lilliputian, Hirsute men, Siamese twins including "Freaks" (monster, abnormal shape) were to see. The thick Prater-Mitzi or the Russian-born trunk man Kobelkoff, as well as the ghostly magic theater of Kratky Baschik enriched the morphology of the bizarre Prater landscape. With the development of technology and electricity, the entertainment in the Prater was becoming more and more diverse.
In the emerging age of railways, the in Trieste born Basilio Calafati founded the first railway carousel in 1844. In this hut in 1854 the figure of the "big Chinesers" was set up as a mast. Many showmen and technicians from all over the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy, but also from the rest of Europe in the illustrious Viennese amusement park their ideas put into practice.
The Englishman Basset succeeded in 1897 to set up the still existing Ferris wheel in the Prater. This vehicle with a diameter of 61 meters originally had 30 cars. When the first "living pictures", the Cinematography, were born, 1896 the first cinema was opened in the Prater. Electricity in 1898 the first electrically operated Grottenbahn brought in the Prater. This fairytale train was also the first in Europe. On the occasion of the popularity of the airplane in 1911 the first "Aeroplan Carousel" was established. Followed in 1926 the first "Autodrome" and in 1933 the first "ghost train". In 1928, the still running "Liliputbahn", a reduced form of the great steam locomotives was placed in the Prater. 1935 brought a Prater entrepreneur from Chicago the rapid "flight path" in the Prater, a system not running on rails.
The Prater always changed its face, modernized and adapted itself to the trend of times. One attraction always replaced the other. Only few historical venues have been able to transport themselves into the present. Tradition-conscious companies such as the "Pony Carousel" from the year 1887 or the nostalgic slide tower "switchback (Tobogan)" from the 50s fight against the taste of the times and the needs of the visitors. In popularity but the historic Ferris wheel, the "Miniature Train" and of course the restaurant "Swiss House" (specialty: stilt and beer) will never lose.
Rickety ghost trains and sparkling grotto railways, although dusty, will not allow to be pushed out of the Prater. Between the historical venues flash the new, modern, hydraulically operated high-tech fairground rides. 1909-1944 the enormous dimensioned "roller coaster" always was a magnet for the Prater trippers. A reduced form is the after the war built "Neue Wiener roller coaster". Was swallowed entirely by history the magnificent "Venice in Vienna". On the site of the present Emperor's Meadow (Kaiserwiese) was located around the turn of the century the illusory world of the artificially recreated lagoon city. The initiator Gabor Steiner created in 1895 a world in the Prater, in which not only the high society, but also the Bohemian maids and the soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian multinational state amused themselves. In the era of the fin de siècle (= the decadent over-refinement of feeling and taste at the end of the 19th century), in which the Prater flourished, performed the most famous conductors of the time (Strauss, Lanner, Ziehrer).
Characteristic for the Wiener Prater today is also the adjacent green, left in its naturale state Praterau (Prater floodplain). An engaging recreational landscape with trees, meadows and ponds. Through this welcoming and quiet part of the Prater leads the 4.5 km long main avenue, which is lined with old chestnut trees. At the time, colorful flower parades were held there where, inter alia, even the Emperor and Empress and Mayor Lueger showed up. Along the main avenue were situated the now defunct, three famous coffee houses. The1783 built by Canevale "pleasure house" (Lusthaus) at the end of the main avenue, however, is still to be found. Past is the "Vaudeville Light", where for a long time popular movie stars and artists of yesteryear (Aslan, Jeritza, Moser, ... ) entertained the Prater audience.
To the Prater belongs also the fairgrounds. There in 1873 took place the world exhibition. The Rotunda, those proud crowned by a cupola central building in 1937 became a prey to the flames. What in the course of time of historic buildings of facilities in the Prater not had outlived itself, was destroyed in World War II. The most severely battered amusement park but was rebuilt. It established itself again as an integral part of the cultural entertainment of the city of Vienna. The force measuring machine "Watschenmann" is part of the local history of this unique institution, but also the cheeky and defiant "Prater Puppet" characterizes the color of the Vienna Prater.
Why wear a continuous glucose monitor?
Too much glucose in your bloodstream is toxic, too little is fatal. Our bodies prioritize by keeping us sick and alive (with obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes) in the former condition, and manufacturing glucose in the latter. Because of this, too much blood glucose is common, too little blood glucose is rare.
A continuous glucose monitor is another - provides minute by minute information about how the body handles this tightly controlled metabolite. Currently, these are used for people with diabetes (unfortunately a greater % of the population), eventually, as is being discussed, this technology may be embedded in the Apple Watch.
In terms of the product, I am fascinated by the color combinations chosen - the blue and yellow are clearly a complementary pair, making the device itself a color harmony.

For Paulo Mellett, on his birthday, as he continues the cycle...
Pen on paper, 17.5 x 17.5 cm. And a rather lengthy interpretation of the imagery...
The Triskelle or Triskellion, is a pre-celtic spiral design. It consists of three separate spirals rotating in the same direction around a central, circular point, and themselves forming a circle. The three spirals consist of a single, continuous line. For thousands of years, it has represented the continuum of life and various three-fold elements: life, death, rebirth; past, present, future; spirit, mind, body etc. More than any other meaning, though, it represents the three elements of Air, Water and Earth, and the flow of energy through these.
Because of the inter-connectedness of the three spirals, it is sometimes said to represent three threes, or nines, particularly the nine months of pregnancy that result in life and continue the three-fold cycle of life, death and rebirth. It is observable that the various three-fold natures it represents can interact with each other in this multiplicitous way... ie, the three elements of air, water and earth can all pass through life, death and rebirth, or the way in which our spirit, mind and body are influenced by past, present future. So the significance of the Triskellion is always exponential, growing and expanding within its continuum.
Within this design, all three of the physical elements are present.
Water is represented by waves, bubbles, a ship journeying and three fish. The bubbles show it’s interaction with air, and the ship journeys between two points of land or earth. The waves and journeying represent transience and movement in this malleable element. In Irish mythology, three ancient salmon were said to be the oldest creatures in the world. They lived in a pool under an oak tree. The Oak was older even than the salmon, and contained all wisdom. As the oak dropped its acorns into the pool, the salmon fed on them, and thus they came to hold all wisdom themselves.
Rocks, minerals and fossils represent Earth, rising to high mountains and producing plants and life. Most prominent of these plants is an apple tree, and curling amongst its branches is a snake, the most earthly and earthbound of creatures. This image is usually interpreted in terms of the biblical genesis account as the first moment of ‘sin’. I prefer to see it as an allegory of the moment of awakening of human consciousness... choosing independence to eat of the tree of knowledge. The bible also uses the image of a snake in a tree as a symbol of healing, though this more positive notion of earth and fruitfulness gets forgotten!
The trees roots grow out of the water, and its leaves are blown away by the third element of Air. Here, air is made visible in terms of curling winds, stars, a flock of wild geese and a rainbow. The latter of these is always seen as a promise of good things, light in the rain. Wild geese are often used as a Celtic symbol of the spirit... it is wild, untameable, strong, it travels huge distances. It represents the enduring, eternal nature of that spirit as whilst the goose disappears and is absent for many months of the year, it always returns. Therefore its long journeying represents travel of a spiritual nature. Very loosely, the stars form part of the constellation of Draco, the dragon, the largest constellation. It is suggested that the layout of the many ancient Cambodian temples form a map of the constellation of Draco across the land.
In the centre of all this lies the sun, representing the fourth element of fire. Its rays spread out through the picture, energising the other elements. All four elements are again represented in the corner pieces.
Circling the whole image is a snake swallowing its tale. For millennia, this continuous circle has represented eternity and the cycle of life, death and rebirth.

The United Palace is a church, live music venue, and non-profit cultural center located at 4140 Broadway between West 175th and 176th Streets in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Built in 1930 as Loew's 175th Street Theatre, the venue was originally a movie palace designed by architect Thomas W. Lamb. Its lavishly eclectic interior decor was supervised by Harold Rambusch.[5][6][7][8] The theater originally presented films and live vaudeville and operated continuously until closed by Loew's in 1969. That same year it was purchased for over a half million dollars by the television evangelist Rev. Frederick J. Eikerenkoetter II, better known as Reverend Ike. The theater became the headquarters of his United Church Science of Living Institute and was renamed the Palace Cathedral, sometimes also called "Reverend Ike's Prayer Tower".[3] It was completely restored and still continues to be maintained by the United Church.[9]

Heard a few weird continuous calls that sound uncommon to my ears. Hence I started scanning the thick canopy for any sign of bird(s).
Malay name: Tiong Emas, or Tiong Mas.
Also known as hill myna or myna bird is a member of the starling family (Sturnidae), resident in hill regions of South Asia and Southeast Asia.
Calls: Loud, shrill, descending whistles followed by other calls . It is most vocal at dawn and dusk, when it is found in a pair or small groups in forest clearings high in the canopy (Ali, & Ripley, 1983).
Both sexes can produce an extraordinarily wide range of loud calls – whistles, wails, screeches, and gurgles, sometimes melodious and often very human-like in quality. Each individual has a repertoire of three to 13 such call types.
Unlike some other birds, such as the greater racket-tailed drongo (Dicrurus paradiseus), the common hill myna does not imitate other birds in the wild, although it is a widely held misconception that they do. On the other hand, in captivity, they are among the most renowned mimics, perhaps on par only with the grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus). They can learn to reproduce many everyday sounds, particularly the human voice, and even whistled tunes, with astonishing accuracy and clarity (Klatt, & Stefanski, 1974; Klingholz, 1979).

Yet another continuous flow intersection that UDOT has installed on Bangerter Highway. By the end of this year we will have a total of nine CFIs (maybe a few more that I am forgetting) in Salt Lake County (seven on Bangerter Hwy and two on Redwood Rd), as well as one in Utah County (by Utah Valley University).
Another point of interest: UDOT has not placed its streetlights in the center median like that and installed the mast arm going both directions for quite some time. I wish they'd do it more often.
Samarkand is a city in southeastern Uzbekistan and among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia. Samarkand is the capital of the Samarkand Region and a district-level city, that includes the urban-type settlements Kimyogarlar, Farhod and Khishrav. With 551,700 inhabitants (2021), it is the third-largest city in Uzbekistan.
There is evidence of human activity in the area of the city dating from the late Paleolithic Era. Though there is no direct evidence of when Samarkand was founded, several theories propose that it was founded between the 8th and 7th centuries BC. Prospering from its location on the Silk Road between China, Persia and Europe, at times Samarkand was one of the largest cities in Central Asia, and was an important city of the empires of Greater Iran. By the time of the Persian Achaemenid Empire, it was the capital of the Sogdian satrapy. The city was conquered by Alexander the Great in 329 BC, when it was known as Markanda, which was rendered in Greek as Μαράκανδα. The city was ruled by a succession of Iranian and Turkic rulers until it was conquered by the Mongols under Genghis Khan in 1220.
The city is noted as a centre of Islamic scholarly study and the birthplace of the Timurid Renaissance. In the 14th century, Timur made it the capital of his empire and the site of his mausoleum, the Gur-e Amir. The Bibi-Khanym Mosque, rebuilt during the Soviet era, remains one of the city's most notable landmarks. Samarkand's Registan square was the city's ancient centre and is bounded by three monumental religious buildings. The city has carefully preserved the traditions of ancient crafts: embroidery, goldwork, silk weaving, copper engraving, ceramics, wood carving, and wood painting. In 2001, UNESCO added the city to its World Heritage List as Samarkand – Crossroads of Cultures.
Modern Samarkand is divided into two parts: the old city, which includes historical monuments, shops, and old private houses; and the new city, which was developed during the days of the Russian Empire and Soviet Union and includes administrative buildings along with cultural centres and educational institutions. On 15 and 16 September 2022, the city hosted the 2022 SCO summit.
Samarkand has a multicultural and plurilingual history that was significantly modified by the process of national delimitation in Central Asia. Many inhabitants of the city are native or bilingual speakers of the Tajik language, whereas Uzbek is the official language and Russian is also widely used in the public sphere, as per Uzbekistan's language policy.
After surgery, I was required to spend 8 - 12 hours each day strapped into the "Continuous Passive Motion" machine." The goal was to get to a hundred degree bend. The dog took the every opportunity to jump on my incision and steal the slippers off my feet and blankets off of my torso while I was strapped in. He also napped on the CPM machine when it wasn't in use. It's a good thing I was in a perpetual pain killer haze.
This custom built cabinet was made to be 39" along each wall with 6" returns on the sides, and stand about 90" tall.
Some features include our continuous block base molding, traditional crown molding, wood framed adjustable glass shelves, recessed lights with a touch hinge, and custom overlay style lower doors. Inside edge: Milton, Panel raise:A3, Outside edge: #12

We had the audacity to cross a chain erected by the Blackpool Sicherheitsdienst because the tide was in ...... a youth on a quadbike dressed in an important uniform roared up: "Orders are orders" - Oh, lord where are we going - continuous supervision?
* The Pictures - Flooding, 2
The next set of 4 shots in the 'Flooding Set' shows, at top left, the desolate Station site looking towards the south and Ickles, Templeborough and Tinsley. This was the old course of the Rotherham Cut of the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation but the GCR many years ago, changed the course through here so it could be used for their new line formation between Woodburn Junction and Mexborough and a for a new, Central, Station. Much detail about this work can be found here-
www.flickr.com/photos/daohaiku/26425061234/
'The changing fortunes of the Canal, GC and S&R Railway through Rotherham'. The Canal formation was used as the GCR had to get their line under the 'Old Road' at Ickles and this was the only way of doing it so, what we are looking at in the top left picture, is the old canal bed formation which had to be in-filled, to bring it up to this level... Although there is plenty of water in this area, with Rotherham Central Station very close to the new canal formation, off to the left, this _isn't_ where the problem lie in terms of flooding, that was further along behind the camera, at location indicated in the 1st picture, at Parkgate, near the Homebase site. At top right, the location just mentioned can be seen with the canal and its 'turning hole' in the right background, two Network Rail personell are in attendance, repairing wet cabling and damaged magnets. The picture by Chris Brown, taken on Saturday, says it all, see-

As can be seen, by this time, 11:06 last Sunday, all the water had subsided and the tracks were clear, if not the lineside electro-mechanical components; this site is a notorious flooding area and the reason is easy to see, The River Don, the cause of the flooding, is just the other side of the Canal so, two waterways in very close proximity to cause issues. I understand its the water backing up along the large drainage culvert, to the right of the kneeling technician, that is the problem as water flows form here to the Don normally, _under_ the canal, but when weather is severe it backs up to fill this area and can then spill _into_ the canal! Moving off once more, to the final destination at Kilnhurst and to view the parked up GBRf sat in the Up Goods Loop at lower left, next to the canal formation which was running a little high but on the other side of the tracks, off to the right, the fields between the lines and the River were badly flooded, though by this time the water was starting to recede. GBRf 66742, 'Port of Immingham Centenary, 1912 - 2012' can be seen parked up on the left, having revered back from the Aldwarke direction and into the loop, originally on the 4Z80, Felixstowe North(GBRf) to Tinsley Yard(GBRf), it had been sat here 0ver 24 hours and would not depart until early on the following day. At lower right, the wide ditch along the embankment alongside the railway formation, has filled up with water, as has a lot of the surrounding fields over on the right. This is just about the best picture which can be had here in the late Spring, Summer and early Autumn periods, the vegetation including lots of new Silver Birch trees are now making the viewing situation impossible, compare this with a picture taken in February last year-
www.flickr.com/photos/daohaiku/25429504867/
and the problem becomes clear... there was even some evidence of heavy rain and/or flooding at that time as well..

I found some old family collected postal stamps with a part of a letter probably by grandpa.
