January 27, 2010--A view of the construction of the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons from the fourth floor of the Van Leer building. It's quite an expanse.
Taking this photo was a nice, hands-on proof-of-concept of the Sunny 16 Rule. However, since I was taking the picture through a window, I had to tweak it a little, though the rule-of-thumb made working out the settings a lot easier.

This Kataspyder 2S "Little Kat" Log Loader is essentially a small version of their popular 2X Excavator, with a faster, more maneuverable lift arm necessary for logging. The claw apparatus can be replaced by a swing saw to convert the 2S into a feller-buncher, albeit one that can only handle smaller trees.
How many planes can you see in this shot?! My favourite aircraft, a Kelowna Flightcraft Boeing 727-243(A)(F) operated for Purolator taxis past a CargoJet Boeing 757 and Boeing 767 sitting on Vancouver International Airport's Apron 8 used for cargo.
"Admiral – the only FTSE 100 company in Wales – last night said construction would start in December with completion due in early 2014.
The 220,000sq ft HQ – able to accommodate 3,000 staff – will rise up on Bridge Street Square, alongside St Davids shopping centre, Cineworld and Motorpoint Arena Cardiff.
The parkland – formerly a multi-storey car park – has proved popular since its creation two years ago. It was only an interim measure, however, while a redevelopment plan was drawn up.
At yesterday’s meeting, Gabalfa councillor Cathy Pearcy, who voted against the application, said: “It looks just like a convection heater – it looks awful. I’m so very sorry to see that space gone because it’s a lovely area in the city centre and people have got used to that open space.
“I suppose Admiral are a very big employer and they are going to employ more people, but I am very unhappy that they want to build there.”

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.-McGill Library at Westminster may have the front door closed because of construction on the front steps, but the library is open.
Re-stepping at McGill Library
The reconstruction project of the front steps continues through the summer, but library officials want everyone to know McGill is open. You can enter the building from Market Street during regular library hours: Monday-Friday 9- 4.

Re-stepping at McGill Library
McGill Library, built in the Collegiate Gothic style, opened on campus in 1938. It is named after Ralph Gibson McGill (1902). McGill was a missionary to Egypt. He drowned in the Mediterranean while trying to rescue children.
McGill Library was rededicated in 2008 after a $6.2 million renovation project. That project included: installation of compact shelving for books and periodicals on the ground floor; relocation of the main entrance and construction of a handicapped-accessible lift; creation of the Williamson and the Drinko Rooms; repair and renovation of the Ferguson Room, including refinishing of vintage 1930s solid oak chairs and library tables; and relocation and renovation of the computer lab.
Some test shots with the Polaroid brand (Konica?) colour negative film expired 32 years ago.
I exposed the 200 ISO film as 50 ISO.
The resulting negatives (developed normally C-41) are low contrast, high fog, high grain with a colour shift towards red.
The negatives were scanned with a Nikon Coolscan ED.
After adjusting the colour curves in the GIMP they don't look too bad with popping reds and yellows, reminding of old magazines and photo albums.

The bridge that separates one side of our town from the other has been under construction for almost a year now. While the construction crews have been doing their best I am sure, the construction has made life very hard on the local businesses, especially the ones we like best - the independantly owned Mom & Pop type businesses. Our favorite ice cream place is in the building on left edge of the frame - hidden from view by 2 ginormous rusty steel I-beams that are being used to stabilize the bridge. The ice cream shop has been closed now for 2 months. Normally they take a month off in January since the tourist traffic is so light and the cold weather for some reason locals eat less ice cream. This year they have been closed for 2 months so far, with no indication they will be opening anytime soon. Ah well, it is still an interesting engineering undertaking, so I shot an HDR image of it to try and capture more of the dynamic range of shadows and highlights.

Several projects are underway on the University of Central Arkansas campus. The weight training facility at the Pepsi Center is nearing completion, while the new Bear Hall is taking shape. The dormitory will also house several offices for the athletics department and feature privately-sponsored skyboxes overlooking Estes Stadium. The city of Conway is also in the midst of widening Farris Road on the western border of the campus.

Thousand Oaks Planning Commission recommends moratorium on such tracts until city draws up guidelines. Other hillside tracts are planned in Westlake and Sunset Hills.
