The Martian Motor Works Ursa was the first MMW truck built on Mars, and a phenomenal piece of machinery. Easily reconfigured, hundreds of Ursa 1's were built and used in a wide variety of functions.
The Clam Bunk Skidder seen here has a third motor to run the "clam" at the back, as well as rear facing lights to illuminate the big loads.

Construction of a 10-plex, hi tech movie theater is under way. Who still goes out to pay for watching a movie in uncomfortable seats among strangers without the ability to stop and come and go as one pleases? Who has the money to pay for such outings?

At the intersection of Lange Nieuwstraat and Sint-Katelijnevest was a serious construction project that did not look like it was finishing anytime soon. When folks had the opportunity sometimes they would navigate the path beyond the fences that made crossing the street next to impossible.

Construction of the new interchange and parkway station linking the main lines between Birmingham and Gloucester and Worcester and Paddington, Worcestershire Parkway, is at an advanced stage with the buildings taking shape and the platform construction underway. The station, complete with retail units, toilets and 500 parking spaces is due to open in early 2019. Cross Country's 170107 drifts by the station on 10 August with 1V11 Nottingham to Cadiff, one of the services that will call here.
Any photo essay of China would be found lacking if not addressing the boundless growth in the form of construction. While not my favorite aspect of China, it is nonetheless ever-present. In Zhu Jiang New Town (Guangzhou), as seen here, the work goes on day and night. This entire region is characterized by air infused with refractory dust, and the sound of diesels chugging, iron workers hammering and arc welders sizzling 24 hours a day.

Minimum-Impact-House is a holistic approach for the reduction of the overall-impact of residential housing by creating a new type of residential house by densifying the city centre. In the design project a prototype mini-house has been developed to explore the potential of so far uninhabitable urban niches. A triangular site of only 29sqm was chosen to built a Mini-house in size comparable to a family house of 150sqm. This strategy avoids the further use of land and the need of building of new infrastructure like streets and public buildings. The city centre is denser an environment so that the inhabitants won’t to travel so often to work, shopping, education, or cultural events.
In a research project the prototype was compared to a typical suburban house. A life-cycle-analysis quantified the amounts of energy, material, and investment for the construction, and consumed during an estimated life-span of the buildings of 50 years. The analysis for which a software was developed was also used as a design-tool for optimising the prototype-building in terms of energy-consumption, construction, and materials. For the building construction renewable resources, mainly timbre, had been used which reduces the energy content and emissions.

Das Minimum Impact House wurde von einem Verbundforschungsprojekt begleitet mit Drexler Guinand Jauslin Architekten GmbH und Fachgebiet Entwerfen und Energieeffizientes Bauen Prof. Manfred Hegger der TU Darmstadt. Gefördert von der Deutschen Bundesstiftung Umwelt DBU.
Das Minihaus ist ein Prototyp für innerstädtische Nachverdichtung. Statt einer Zersiedlung der Landschaft zur Schaffung von Wohnraums können Nischen und Restflächen in der Stadt genutzt werden. So wird die bestehende Infrastruktur besser ausgelastet und das sozio-kulturelle Gefüge der Stadt gestärkt.
Durch eine umfassende Ökobilanzierung wurde das Gebäude ganzheitlich optimiert. Dabei wurde sowohl die Herstellung (Holzbauweise, natürliche nachwachsende Ressourcen) als auch der Betrieb (Passivhaus-Standard, erneuerbare Energien) als auch Instandhaltung und Rückbau analysiert.
Makro-ökonomisch werden durch den geringen Landverbrauch und die Vermeidung von Investitionskosten in Straßen, Leitungen, öffentliche Gebäude vermieden. Bei dem Gebäude wurden durch geringe Betriebkosten und günstige Finanzierung (KFW40) die Lebenszykluskosten optimiert.

I didn't get the name on the trucks, but evidently NS uses a subcontractor to distribute ties on the Chicago Line. This photo was taken in Bryan, Ohio, and I don't believe I've ever seen this outfit on the line. It's an interesting six-axle locomotive moving the gons and it appears they've been busy for several weeks considering the tie piles for several miles each way. Loaded up with fresh timber, this move was headed east and it looks like they made it all the way to Stryker before they went to work unloading.
The maze of supportive scaffolding is intriguing in structure...and what a geometry lesson applied to 'real world'! :) Interesting that it can be so quickly constructed and installed and yet still provide the strength and flexibility for the building contractors. Some of the same variables characterize scaffolding in the teaching/learning process, but here the scaffolding is definitely a verb - a type of action - and not a product, persay.
Much of the research and writings of instructional scaffolding originate from Lev Vygotsky and his sociocultural theory and concept of the zone of proximal development. Like these physical structures, learning scaffolds are meant to be temporary - moving from constant and aggressive support to creating independent learning. The 'weaning' process is a natural one, used commonly by parents in the developmental process as well. Is it instinctual or does the scaffolding process itself need to be learned? What feedback is needed to determine the level of support needed? Educators often spend considerable time planning for lessons and I wonder how much thought is dedicated to the scaffolding process or does that really happen naturally...4th Ave N & Gulfshore Blvd, Naples, FL
