Secrets of Radiation. It is the project that I intend to reflect the physical and mental deterioration suffered by women who have received radiation from cervical cancer and the deterioration due to side effects to the treatment, which saves their lives but leaves a great imprint on their body and mind . This internal wilting causes a great variety of problems such as: dryness, sensitive skin, constipation, bleeding, lack of lubrication and more. They lose their sexuality by not being able to intimate with their partner, which leads them to question their body and person which becomes a mental problem. Women who have gone through this usually carry the problem silently and unaided. We must put the light on this situation and see how we can provide them with the right information and help.

Baptists preach religious intolerance at Gay Pride marchers. London, 02.07.2011

As this year's London Gay Pride parade made its way from Portland Place, down Regent Street and then on to Trafalgar Square, marchers and onlookers alike were quite shocked and generally offended to discover that there was a demonstration set up at the bottom of Waterloo Place by a group of so-called Christians from the Baptist Church - some of whom looked like they had been time-warped directly from the 1950's, complete with emotional constipation - who spent the entire afternoon insulting and demeaning all gay people and anyone who accepts homosexuality as a part of the enormously wide spectrum of human sexuality by cherry-picking snippets from the Bible - without proper context - and generally showing themselves up to be nothing more than a bunch of hate-filled bigots who laughably claim to love the people they were standing there belittling.

Needless to say the gay marchers responded with a continual torrent of cat-calls, laughter, jeering, rude hand-signals, kissing and even a bit of breast-bearing. All of this was just feeding the Baptist's justification for their prejudice, of course, and clearly this group of ideologically-driven individuals felt somehow emotionally nourished and vindicated by the experience, but the truth is that they came across as petty, arrogant and malicious anachronisms.

When I arrived on the scene two grinning lesbians with three large black umbrellas were pointedly blocking the public's view of the Baptists and as many of the large, lurid yellow placards erected by the religious zealots as they could. A little later on the onlookers erupted in cheers and whistles as two younger girls kissed right in front of the anti-gay demonstrators, and after that a young man demanded a copy of the Bible from the Baptists and proceeded to sit cross-legged on the pavement checking every single quote mentioned on the yellow boards so he could see for himself how the individual phrases had been quoted completely out of context, just to suit the zealots' low opinion. The preachers spent much of their time mentioning the Devil, but in my eyes the Devil was the one holding the microphone, waving a book around, trying to inflict their misery on everyone else...

Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, known as a peppercorn, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning. When fresh and fully mature, it is about 5 mm in diameter and dark red, and contains a single seed, like all drupes. Peppercorns and the ground pepper derived from them may be described simply as pepper, or more precisely as black pepper (cooked and dried unripe fruit), green pepper (dried unripe fruit), or white pepper (ripe fruit seeds).

Black pepper is native to present-day Kerala in Southwestern India, and is extensively cultivated there and elsewhere in tropical regions. Vietnam is the world's largest producer and exporter of pepper, producing 34% of the world's crop, as of 2013.

Ground dried and cooked peppercorns have been used since antiquity, both for flavour and as a traditional medicine. Black pepper is the world's most traded spice, and is one of the most common spices added to cuisines around the world. Its spiciness is due to the chemical compound piperine, which is a different kind of spicy from the capsaicin characteristic of chili peppers. It is ubiquitous in the modern world as a seasoning, and is often paired with salt and available on dining tables in shakers.

ETYMOLOGY

The word pepper has roots in the Sanskrit word pippali for long pepper. Ancient Greek and Latin turned pippali into the Greek πέπερι peperi and then into the Latin piper, which the Romans used for both black pepper and long pepper, erroneously believing that both came from the same plant.

From its Sanskrit roots, today's "pepper" is derived from the Old English pipor and from Latin, which is the source of Romanian piper, Italian pepe, Dutch peper, German Pfeffer, French poivre, and other similar forms.

In the 16th century, people began using pepper to also mean the unrelated New World chili pepper (genus Capsicum). People have also used pepper in a figurative sense to mean "spirit" or "energy" at least as far back as the 1840s. In the early 20th century, this shortened to "pep".

VARIETIES

BLACK PEPPER

Black pepper is produced from the still-green, unripe drupes of the pepper plant. The drupes are cooked briefly in hot water, both to clean them and to prepare them for drying. The heat ruptures cell walls in the pepper, speeding the work of browning enzymes during drying. The drupes dry in the sun or by machine for several days, during which the pepper skin around the seed shrinks and darkens into a thin, wrinkled black layer. Once dry, the spice is called black peppercorn. On some estates, the berries are separated from the stem by hand and then sun-dried without the boiling process.

Once the peppercorns are dried, pepper spirit and oil can be extracted from the berries by crushing them. Pepper spirit is used in many medicinal and beauty products. Pepper oil is also used as an ayurvedic massage oil and in certain beauty and herbal treatments.

WHITE PEPPER

White pepper consists solely of the seed of the ripe fruit of the pepper plant, with the thin darker-coloured skin (flesh) of the fruit removed. This is usually accomplished by a process known as retting, where fully ripe red pepper berries are soaked in water for about a week so the flesh of the peppercorn softens and decomposes; rubbing then removes what remains of the fruit, and the naked seed is dried. Sometimes alternative processes are used for removing the outer pepper from the seed, including removing the outer layer through mechanical, chemical, or biological methods.

Ground white pepper is used in Chinese and Thai cuisine, but also in salads, cream sauces, light-coloured sauces, and mashed potatoes (as a substitute, because black pepper would visibly stand out). However, white pepper actually has a different flavour from black pepper; it lacks certain compounds present in the outer layer of the drupe

GREEN PEPPER

Green pepper, like black pepper, is made from unripe drupes. Dried green peppercorns are treated in a way that retains the green colour, such as with sulphur dioxide, canning, or freeze-drying. Pickled peppercorns, also green, are unripe drupes preserved in brine or vinegar.

Fresh, unpreserved green pepper drupes, largely unknown (and unavailable) in the West, are used in some Asian cuisines, particularly Thai cuisine. Their flavour has been described as "spicy and fresh", with a "bright aroma". They decay quickly if not dried or preserved, making them unsuitable for international shipping.

WILD PEPPER

Wild pepper grows in the Western Ghats region of India. Into the 19th century, the forests contained expansive wild pepper vines, as recorded by the Scottish physician Francis Buchanan (also a botanist and geographer) in his book A journey from Madras through the countries of Mysore, Canara and Malabar (Volume III). However, deforestation resulted in wild pepper growing in more limited forest patches from Goa to Kerala, with the wild source gradually decreasing as the quality and yield of the cultivated variety improved. No successful grafting of commercial pepper on wild pepper has been achieved to date.

ORANGE PEPPER AND RED PEPPER

Orange pepper or red pepper usually consists of ripe red pepper drupes preserved in brine and vinegar. Ripe red peppercorns can also be dried using the same colour-preserving techniques used to produce green pepper.

Pink pepper and other plants

Pink peppercorns are the fruits of the Peruvian pepper tree, Schinus molle, or its relative, the Brazilian pepper tree, Schinus terebinthifolius, plants from a different family (Anacardiaceae). As they are members of the cashew family, they may cause allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, for persons with a tree nut allergy.

The bark of Drimys winteri ("canelo" or "winter's bark") is used as a substitute for pepper in cold and temperate regions of Chile and Argentina, where it is easily found and readily available. In New Zealand, the seeds of kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum), a relative of black pepper, are sometimes used as pepper; the leaves of Pseudowintera colorata ("mountain horopito") are another replacement for pepper. Several plants in the United States are also used as pepper substitutes, such as field pepperwort, least pepperwort, shepherd's purse, horseradish, and field pennycress.

PLANTS

The pepper plant is a perennial woody vine growing up to 4 m in height on supporting trees, poles, or trellises. It is a spreading vine, rooting readily where trailing stems touch the ground. The leaves are alternate, entire, 5 to 10 cm long and 3 to 6 cm across. The flowers are small, produced on pendulous spikes 4 to 8 cm long at the leaf nodes, the spikes lengthening up to 7 to 15 cm as the fruit matures. Pepper can be grown in soil that is neither too dry nor susceptible to flooding, moist, well-drained and rich in organic matter (the vines do not do too well over an altitude of 900 m above sea level). The plants are propagated by cuttings about 40 to 50 cm long, tied up to neighbouring trees or climbing frames at distances of about 2 m apart; trees with rough bark are favoured over those with smooth bark, as the pepper plants climb rough bark more readily. Competing plants are cleared away, leaving only sufficient trees to provide shade and permit free ventilation. The roots are covered in leaf mulch and manure, and the shoots are trimmed twice a year. On dry soils, the young plants require watering every other day during the dry season for the first three years. The plants bear fruit from the fourth or fifth year, and then typically for seven years. The cuttings are usually cultivars, selected both for yield and quality of fruit.

A single stem bears 20 to 30 fruiting spikes. The harvest begins as soon as one or two fruits at the base of the spikes begin to turn red, and before the fruit is fully mature, and still hard; if allowed to ripen completely, the fruit lose pungency, and ultimately fall off and are lost. The spikes are collected and spread out to dry in the sun, then the peppercorns are stripped off the spikes.

Black pepper is native either to Southeast Asia or South Asia. Within the genus Piper, it is most closely related to other Asian species such as P. caninum.

PRODUCTION AND TRADE

As of 2016, Vietnam was the world's largest producer and exporter of black peppercorns, producing 216,000 tonnes or 39% of the world total of 546,000 tonnes (table). Other major producers include Indonesia (15%), India (10%), and Brazil (10%). Global pepper production may vary annually according to crop management, disease, and weather. Vietnam dominates the export market, using almost none of its production domestically.

Peppercorns are among the most widely traded spice in the world, accounting for 20% of all spice imports.

HISTORY

Pepper is native to South Asia and Southeast Asia, and has been known to Indian cooking since at least 2000 BCE. J. Innes Miller notes that while pepper was grown in southern Thailand and in Malaysia, its most important source was India, particularly the Chera dynasty (Tamil dynasty) Malabar Coast, in what is now the state of Kerala. The lost ancient port city of Muziris in Kerala, famous for exporting black pepper and various other spices, gets mentioned in a number of classical historical sources. Peppercorns were a much-prized trade good, often referred to as "black gold" and used as a form of commodity money. The legacy of this trade remains in some Western legal systems that recognize the term "peppercorn rent" as a token payment for something that is, essentially, being given.

The ancient history of black pepper is often interlinked with (and confused with) that of long pepper, the dried fruit of closely related Piper longum. The Romans knew of both and often referred to either as just piper. In fact, the popularity of long pepper did not entirely decline until the discovery of the New World and of chili peppers. Chili peppers—some of which, when dried, are similar in shape and taste to long pepper—were easier to grow in a variety of locations more convenient to Europe.

Before the 16th century, pepper was being grown in Java, Sunda, Sumatra, Madagascar, Malaysia, and everywhere in Southeast Asia. These areas traded mainly with China, or used the pepper locally. Ports in the Malabar area also served as a stop-off point for much of the trade in other spices from farther east in the Indian Ocean. Following the British hegemony in India, virtually all of the black pepper found in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa was traded from Malabar region.

Black peppercorns were found stuffed in the nostrils of Ramesses II, placed there as part of the mummification rituals shortly after his death in 1213 BCE. Little else is known about the use of pepper in ancient Egypt and how it reached the Nile from South Asia.

Pepper (both long and black) was known in Greece at least as early as the fourth century BCE, though it was probably an uncommon and expensive item that only the very rich could afford.

By the time of the early Roman Empire, especially after Rome's conquest of Egypt in 30 BCE, open-ocean crossing of the Arabian Sea direct to Chera dynasty southern India's Malabar Coast was near routine. Details of this trading across the Indian Ocean have been passed down in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. According to the Greek geographer Strabo, the early empire sent a fleet of around 120 ships on an annual trip to India and back. The fleet timed its travel across the Arabian Sea to take advantage of the predictable monsoon winds. Returning from India, the ships travelled up the Red Sea, from where the cargo was carried overland or via the Nile-Red Sea canal to the Nile River, barged to Alexandria, and shipped from there to Italy and Rome. The rough geographical outlines of this same trade route would dominate the pepper trade into Europe for a millennium and a half to come.

With ships sailing directly to the Malabar coast, black pepper was now travelling a shorter trade route than long pepper, and the prices reflected it. Pliny the Elder's Natural History tells us the prices in Rome around 77 CE: "Long pepper ... is 15 denarii per pound, while that of white pepper is seven, and of black, four." Pliny also complains, "There is no year in which India does not drain the Roman Empire of 50 million sesterces", and further moralizes on pepper:

It is quite surprising that the use of pepper has come so much into fashion, seeing that in other substances which we use, it is sometimes their sweetness, and sometimes their appearance that has attracted our notice; whereas, pepper has nothing in it that can plead as a recommendation to either fruit or berry, its only desirable quality being a certain pungency; and yet it is for this that we import it all the way from India! Who was the first to make trial of it as an article of food? and who, I wonder, was the man that was not content to prepare himself by hunger only for the satisfying of a greedy appetite?

— Pliny, Natural History 12.14

He does not state whether the 50 million was the actual amount of money which found its way to India or the total retail cost of the items in Rome, and, elsewhere, he cites a figure of 100 million sesterces.

Black pepper was a well-known and widespread, if expensive, seasoning in the Roman Empire. Apicius' De re coquinaria, a third-century cookbook probably based at least partly on one from the first century CE, includes pepper in a majority of its recipes. Edward Gibbon wrote, in The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, that pepper was "a favorite ingredient of the most expensive Roman cookery".

POSTCLASSICAL EUROPE

Pepper was so valuable that it was often used as collateral or even currency. In the Dutch language, "pepper expensive" (peperduur) is an expression for something very expensive. Also in Hungarian, the term "a price of pepper" ("borsos ár") means something of extraordinary value. The taste for pepper (or the appreciation of its monetary value) was passed on to those who would see Rome fall. Alaric, king of the Visigoths, included 3,000 pounds of pepper as part of the ransom he demanded from Rome when he besieged the city in fifth century. After the fall of Rome, others took over the middle legs of the spice trade, first the Persians and then the Arabs; Innes Miller cites the account of Cosmas Indicopleustes, who travelled east to India, as proof that "pepper was still being exported from India in the sixth century". By the end of the Early Middle Ages, the central portions of the spice trade were firmly under Islamic control. Once into the Mediterranean, the trade was largely monopolized by Italian powers, especially Venice and Genoa. The rise of these city-states was funded in large part by the spice trade.

A riddle authored by Saint Aldhelm, a seventh-century Bishop of Sherborne, sheds some light on black pepper's role in England at that time:

I am black on the outside, clad in a wrinkled cover,

Yet within I bear a burning marrow.

I season delicacies, the banquets of kings, and the luxuries of the table,

Both the sauces and the tenderized meats of the kitchen.

But you will find in me no quality of any worth,

Unless your bowels have been rattled by my gleaming marrow.

It is commonly believed that during the Middle Ages, pepper was often used to conceal the taste of partially rotten meat. No evidence supports this claim, and historians view it as highly unlikely; in the Middle Ages, pepper was a luxury item, affordable only to the wealthy, who certainly had unspoiled meat available, as well. In addition, people of the time certainly knew that eating spoiled food would make them sick. Similarly, the belief that pepper was widely used as a preservative is questionable; it is true that piperine, the compound that gives pepper its spiciness, has some antimicrobial properties, but at the concentrations present when pepper is used as a spice, the effect is small. Salt is a much more effective preservative, and salt-cured meats were common fare, especially in winter. However, pepper and other spices certainly played a role in improving the taste of long-preserved meats.

Its exorbitant price during the Middle Ages—and the monopoly on the trade held by Italy—was one of the inducements that led the Portuguese to seek a sea route to India. In 1498, Vasco da Gama became the first person to reach India by sailing around Africa (see Age of Discovery); asked by Arabs in Calicut (who spoke Spanish and Italian) why they had come, his representative replied, "we seek Christians and spices". Though this first trip to India by way of the southern tip of Africa was only a modest success, the Portuguese quickly returned in greater numbers and eventually gained much greater control of trade on the Arabian Sea. The 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas with the Spanish granted Portugal exclusive rights to the half of the world where black pepper originated.

Unsurprisingly, the Portuguese proved unable to monopolize the spice trade. Older Arab and Venetian trade networks successfully imported enormous quantities of spices, and pepper once again flowed through Alexandria and Italy, as well as around Africa. In the 17th century, the Portuguese lost almost all of their valuable Indian Ocean trade to the Dutch and the English, who, taking advantage from the Spanish ruling over Portugal during Iberian Union (1580–1640), occupied by force almost all Portuguese dominations in the area. The pepper ports of Malabar began to trade increasingly with the Dutch in the period 1661–1663.

As pepper supplies into Europe increased, the price of pepper declined (though the total value of the import trade generally did not). Pepper, which in the early Middle Ages had been an item exclusively for the rich, started to become more of an everyday seasoning among those of more average means. Today, pepper accounts for one-fifth of the world's spice trade.

China

It is possible that black pepper was known in China in the second century BCE, if poetic reports regarding an explorer named Tang Meng (唐蒙) are correct. Sent by Emperor Wu to what is now south-west China, Tang Meng is said to have come across something called jujiang or "sauce-betel". He was told it came from the markets of Shu, an area in what is now the Sichuan province. The traditional view among historians is that "sauce-betel" is a sauce made from betel leaves, but arguments have been made that it actually refers to pepper, either long or black.

In the third century CE, black pepper made its first definite appearance in Chinese texts, as hujiao or "foreign pepper". It does not appear to have been widely known at the time, failing to appear in a fourth-century work describing a wide variety of spices from beyond China's southern border, including long pepper. By the 12th century, however, black pepper had become a popular ingredient in the cuisine of the wealthy and powerful, sometimes taking the place of China's native Sichuan pepper (the tongue-numbing dried fruit of an unrelated plant).

Marco Polo testifies to pepper's popularity in 13th-century China, when he relates what he is told of its consumption in the city of Kinsay (Hangzhou): "... Messer Marco heard it stated by one of the Great Kaan's officers of customs that the quantity of pepper introduced daily for consumption into the city of Kinsay amounted to 43 loads, each load being equal to 223 lbs." Marco Polo is not considered a very reliable source regarding China, and these second-hand data may be even more suspect, but if this estimated 4,500 kg a day for one city is anywhere near the truth, China's pepper imports may have dwarfed Europe's.

During the course of the Ming treasure voyages in the early 15th century, Admiral Zheng He and his expeditionary fleets returned with such a large amount of black pepper that the once-costly luxury became a common commodity.

Phytochemicals, folk medicine and research

Like many eastern spices, pepper was historically both a seasoning and a folk medicine. Long pepper, being stronger, was often the preferred medication, but both were used. Black pepper (or perhaps long pepper) was believed to cure several illnesses, such as constipation, insomnia, oral abscesses, sunburn, and toothaches, among others. Various sources from the fifth century onward recommended pepper to treat eye problems, often by applying salves or poultices made with pepper directly to the eye. No current medical evidence indicates any of these treatments has any benefit.

Pepper is known to cause sneezing. Some sources say that piperine, a substance present in black pepper, irritates the nostrils, causing the sneezing. Few, if any, controlled studies have been carried out to answer the question.

Piperine is under study for its potential to increase absorption of selenium, vitamin B12, beta-carotene and curcumin, as well as other compounds. As a folk medicine, pepper appears in the Buddhist Samaññaphala Sutta, chapter five, as one of the few medicines a monk is allowed to carry. Pepper contains phytochemicals, including amides, piperidines, pyrrolidines and trace amounts of safrole, which may be carcinogenic in laboratory rodents.

Piperine is also under study for a variety of possible physiological effects, although this work is preliminary and mechanisms of activity for piperine in the human body remain unknown.

NUTRITION

One tablespoon (6 grams) of ground black pepper contains moderate amounts of vitamin K (13% of the daily value or DV), iron (10% DV) and manganese (18% DV), with trace amounts of other essential nutrients, protein, and dietary fibre.

FLAVOR

Pepper gets its spicy heat mostly from piperine derived both from the outer fruit and the seed. Black pepper contains between 4.6 and 9.7% piperine by mass, and white pepper slightly more than that. Refined piperine, by weight, is about one percent as hot as the capsaicin found in chili peppers. The outer fruit layer, left on black pepper, also contains aroma-contributing terpenes, including germacrene (11%), limonene (10%), pinene (10%), alpha-phellandrene (9%), and beta-caryophyllene (7%), which give citrusy, woody, and floral notes. These scents are mostly missing in white pepper, as the fermentation and other processing removes the fruit layer (which also contains the spicy piperine). Other flavors also commonly develop in this process, some of which are described as off-flavors when in excess: Primarily 3-methylindole (pig manure-like), 4-methylphenol (horse manure), 3-methylphenol (phenolic), and butanoic acid (cheese). The aroma of pepper is attributed to rotundone (3,4,5,6,7,8-Hexahydro-3α,8α-dimethyl-5α-(1methylethenyl)azulene-1(2H)-one), a sesquiterpene originally discovered in the tubers of Cyperus rotundus, which can be detected in concentrations of 0.4 nanograms/l in water and in wine: rotundone is also present in marjoram, oregano, rosemary, basil, thyme, and geranium, as well as in some Shiraz wines.

Pepper loses flavor and aroma through evaporation, so airtight storage helps preserve its spiciness longer. Pepper can also lose flavor when exposed to light, which can transform piperine into nearly tasteless isochavicine. Once ground, pepper's aromatics can evaporate quickly; most culinary sources recommend grinding whole peppercorns immediately before use for this reason. Handheld pepper mills or grinders, which mechanically grind or crush whole peppercorns, are used for this as an alternative to pepper shakers that dispense ground pepper. Spice mills such as pepper mills were found in European kitchens as early as the 14th century, but the mortar and pestle used earlier for crushing pepper have remained a popular method for centuries, as well.

Enhancing the flavor profile of peppercorns (including piperine and essential oils), prior to processing, has been attempted through the postharvest application of ultraviolet-C light (UV-C).

Mere miles west of Almira, lies this tiny, crumbling, isolated farmhouse, giving shelter only to dust, insects and the occasional critter. One of its arboreal sentinels has died along with the house, while one still looks lushly upon its pockmarked exterior. There is nothing else for miles and miles.

I passed this place on the way to Omak for a photoshoot. I pointed it out to John and said we must stop here on the way back. Well, we took a different route back (much more scenic) and emerged at Wilbur. I remembered this place as being just past Wilbur. So did John.

HA! Weren't we silly doofs as I drove and drove and drove. Or so it seemed. And a bit quickly, too, because we were losing the light. FInally, after we passed Almira, and I was on the verge of turning around, there it was! I swear it had moved since four hours earlier. Anyway, we got there barely in time.

I did not charge the customer for these out-of-the-way miles, by the way. Just in case they see this.

A note about "The Rules." Photographic dogma would have me make this photo obey the "rule of thirds," wherein either the sky, or the ground, should occupy two thirds and one third respectively. And I cropped the panorama to fit that rule, and most of the time it's a good thing to do this.

Not this time. Whether it was more sky or more ground, it just didn't look right. So screw the rules this time. Yeah, Rules, I just made you my bitch! Now get the hell out of here until I say you can come back!

Last note, I promise:

One of my regular contacts has been noted as writing that she does not like sunset/sunrise photos. She knows who she is. I'd like to apologize to her for this utter abomination, clotted as it is with the blood of a sunset. I have a grimy, gritty, black and white beauty just waiting in the wings for you. It'll rear its monochrome head soon.

Another last note:

Though the house appears to be looking away from the highway, it was actually facing the highway. This is the distortion of a ten-photo panorama, but it makes for a cool composition.

Since this image was posted on 'flickr' in October 2008 it has attracted 4,417 views. Worth reposting I'm thinking. Yes I'm still having my porridge every day!

I must have my porriage every morning, summer and winter.

Good for you, plus keeps the tummy satisfied all morning.

Swirls of pure Canadian maple syrup all over the top...oh! so yummy!

Twenty reasons why porridge is the ultimate health food........

(I'm not sure why reason # 1 is at the top of this list. #20 comes first with me at my age! Alas, a cup of tea is more appealing when I first wake up in the morning. Then I'm wide awake so bound out of bed to prepare and enjoy my porridge)

1. IMPROVES SEX LIFE

Porridge oats can boost libido by helping to re-balance testosterone and oestrogen in the body. Testosterone drives sexual desire in both sexes. Men with low testosterone levels go off sex.

2. GOOD FOR HANGOVERS

Oats neutralise acidity levels in the body and help absorb toxins. Since a hangover is the result of the "poisonous" effects of alcohol, a bowl of porridge might help relieve the symptoms.

Porridge also contains one of the highest levels of soluble fibre of any cereal. Soluble fibre is essential for healthy digestion. Since alcohol depletes sugar levels, the slow-releasing carbohydrates in porridge help redress this.

3. HELPS QUIT SMOKING

Compounds in oats can help calm the nervous system and reduce the craving for nicotine.

4. HEALS THE SKIN

Bathing in oat-based solutions can help problem skin. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the anti-inflammatory compounds in porridge oats can help conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Fill a sock or stocking with porridge oats and place in water for 20 minutes while bathing.

5. FIGHTS INFECTION

Of all the cereals, porridge has the best proportion of protein needed for growth and repair in the body and to help boost the immune system.

6. FIGHTS HEART DISEASE

Many studies have shown that eating fibre-rich food such as porridge reduces the risk of heart disease. But scientists in the U.S. found that porridge contains avenanthramides - chemicals that stop blood cells sticking to artery walls, preventing the fatty deposits that cause heart disease.

7. REDUCES DIABETES RISK SLOWLY

Digested foods such as porridge might cut the risk of developing non-insulin dependent diabetes by absorbing sugar from the gut and cutting the need for large quantities of insulin to be released.

8. HELPS CONCENTRATION

The slow releasing complex carbohydrates in oats sustain energy levels, allowing full concentration to be maintained. Complex carbohydrates also stabilise and raise blood sugar levels.

9. BEATS DEPRESSION

Porridge is high in Vitamin B6, which promotes the brain chemical serotonin. High levels of serotonin are associated with feelings of well-being and also aid relaxation and restful sleep. Levels of serotonin dip when sunlight is limited - i.e. during winter - and can lead to the depressive condition Seasonal Affective Disorder.

10. BOOTS ENERGY

Porridge oats are high in complex carbohydrates and soluble fibre, which means they release energy slowly. A bowl of porridge should provide all the energy you need until lunchtime.

11. CUTS CHILDHOOD OBESITY

A study of 10,000 children by researchers at New York's Columbia University found that among those who regularly ate whole-oat products, the proportion of overweight children almost halved.

Researchers at Oxford Brookes University also found that those eating foods with a low glycaemic index (GI), such as porridge, were less likely to binge on sugary snacks. Foods with a low GI rating release glucose into the body more slowly and evenly, leaving you feeling fuller for longer.

12. LOWERS CHOLESTEROL

Porridge is rich in soluble fibre, which has been shown to lower blood cholesterol. High cholesterol occurs when fat builds up and constricts the arteries, reducing blood flow to the heart. Eating oats can improve blood flow and bind to cholesterol in the gut, aiding its removal from the body. Scientists think the cholesterol-lowering effects of oats are due to the oat soluble fibre beta-glucan.

13. PREVENTS CONSTIPATION

High-fibre foods such as porridge increase the movement of food through the digestive tract.

This increased bowel action provides a good environment for beneficial bacteria in the gut to ferment while decreasing levels of destructive bacteria.

14. FIGHTS OSTEOPOROSIS

Porridge oats are blended with milk, making an excellent source of calcium which is essential for bone health. Lack of calcium can lead to osteoporosis, which involves a loss of bone density and can make bones fragile.

15. CAN HELP DIETING

Porridge oats are 100 per cent natural, with no added sugar, salt or additives, and are naturally low in calories. An average bowl of porridge made with water contains 171 calories.

16. GOOD FOR PREGNANT WOMEN

Porridge is a source of folic acid. Studies have shown that taking folic acid from before conception until the 12th week of pregnancy can reduce the chances of having a baby with spina bifida. Pregnant women need 400mcg of folic acid a day.

17. FIGHTS CANCER

Oats are rich in the antioxidant vitamin E, which protects the body from the damaging free radicals that can cause cancer. A diet high in soluble fibre foods such as porridge oats might also help reduce the chances of developing bowel, colon and breast cancer.

18. CONTAINS ESSENTIAL MINERALS

Porridge is a good source of manganese, which is essential in allowing the body to produce energy as well as helping to build bones and connective tissue. It also contains zinc, which is needed for normal growth, sexual development and reproduction, and a healthy immune system.

19. REDUCES BLOOD PRESSURE

A daily serving of oats can improve blood pressure control and reduce the need for anti-hypertensive medication, according to U.S. researchers - 73 per cent of those fed a wholegrain oat-based cereal (containing 3g of soluble fibre) stopped or reduced their blood pressure medication by half.

20. COULD HELP LONG LIFE

Britain's longest living man, David Henderson, from Montrose, Scotland, who died in 1998 at 109, attributed his age and good health to a daily bowl of porridge. This could be because the lipids present in oats contain a good balance of essential fatty acids which have been linked to longevity and general good health.

Yosselle “Joe” Greenstein—more commonly known as the Mighty Atom—was often called the “smallest strongman in the universe.” His 70+-year career was built on brawn and huckster charm, in which he combined astounding strength with clever showmanship.

Born 3 months premature to a poor family in Suvlak, Poland in 1893, Greenstein’s early life offered little indication of his future career as a world-famous sideshow strongman. At the age of 14, he contracted tuberculosis and was given a bleak diagnosis, but he astounded his doctors by making a full recovery. Thereafter, Greenstein adopted a physical and spiritual dedication to fortifying his body, and much like Theodore Roosevelt, embraced the “strenuous life.” He ran away to join the circus and spent a year and half apprenticing under a circus strongman, Champion Volanko, from whom Greenstein learned diet and exercise rituals that helped him to transform his frail body into a 5’4” powerhouse.

During his career he was known for biting iron nails in half, twisting steel spikes and horseshoes with his bare hands, breaking chains by expanding his chest, pulling cars with his teeth, and holding taxiing airplanes to the ground with chains attached to his hair. Greenstein performed these astounding acts well into his 80s, attracting thousands to see him perform at Madison Square Garden just months before his death!

Greenstein attributed his remarkable strength to clean living, a nutritious diet, and vigorous physical exercise. But his career relied as much on his strength as on his celebrity and charisma. He demonstrated these skills as a carnival barker and salesman, marketing a line of personal care products that included “natural” soap, liniment, hair tonic, and Pep-o-lax, an herbal “regulator” to be used for “temporary constipation” and promoting vigor. Greenstein sold these products beginning in the 1940s or even earlier, through the 1970s. Working out of the back of his 1937 Ford truck at farmers markets in the greater New York area, he enticed customers with his strongman stunts and, after bending 60-penny nails and horseshoes before their eyes, explained that they too could enjoy such strength and vitality into old age by using his products.

Though the ability of these products to do what they claim is dubious at best, Greenstein’s products were never found to violate federal food and drug laws. Yet, Pep-o-lax is among the artifacts in FDA’s history vault because it reflects one of the many ingenious (and outlandish) marketing tactics used to sell various lifestyle products over the course of the 20th century.

The Postcard

A postally unused Comic Series postcard that was published in the mid-1960's by Bamforth & Co. Ltd. of Holmfirth, Yorkshire. The artwork was by Taylor, and the card was printed in England.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is nothing to do with squeaky wheels on the legs of furniture (casters), although it can be used as a lubricant.

It is a vegetable oil pressed from castor beans. Castor oil is a colourless to very pale yellow liquid with a distinct taste and odour.

Castor oil and its derivatives are used in the manufacturing of soaps, lubricants, hydraulic and brake fluids, paints, dyes, coatings, inks, cold resistant plastics, waxes and polishes, nylon, pharmaceuticals and perfumes.

Annually 270,000–360,000 tonnes of castor oil are produced for a variety of uses.

Composition of Castor Oil

Castor oil is a good source of ricinoleic acid, which makes it a valuable addition to feedstocks, commanding a higher price than other seed oils. As an example, in July 2007, Indian castor oil sold for about US$0.90 per kilogram, whereas U.S. soybean, sunflower and canola oils sold for US$0.30 per kilogram.

Uses of Castor Oil

(a) Castor Oil in Food and Preservatives

In the food industry, food-grade castor oil is used in food additives, flavourings, sugar candy, and chocolate. It is also used in food packaging, and as a mould inhibitor.

In India, Pakistan and Nepal, food grains are preserved by the application of castor oil. It stops rice, wheat, and pulses from rotting. For example, the legume pigeon pea is commonly available coated in castor oil for extended storage.

(b) Castor Oil in Traditional Medicine

The use of castor oil as a laxative is first referred to in the circa 1550 BC Ebers Papyrus, although it is known to have been in use for this purpose several centuries before then.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has categorized castor oil as:

"Generally recognized as safe and

effective for over-the-counter use

as a laxative with its major site of

action the small intestine, where it

is digested into ricinoleic acid".

Although used in traditional medicine to induce labour in pregnant women, there is insufficient evidence that castor oil is effective in dilating the cervix or inducing labour.

Castor oil, or a castor oil derivative is an excipient added to prescription drugs; it acts as a vehicle or medium for an active ingredient. Medications in which castor oil features include:

- Miconazole, an antifungal agent

- Paclitaxel, a mitotic inhibitor used in cancer chemotherapy

- Sandimmune, an immunosuppressant drug widely used in connection with organ transplant to reduce the activity of the patient's immune system

- Nelfinavir mesylate, an HIV protease inhibitor

- Tacrolimus, an immunosuppressive drug

- Xenaderm ointment, a topical treatment for skin ulcers

- Aci-Jel (composed of ricinoleic acid from castor oil, with acetic acid and oxyquinoline), used to maintain the acidity of the vagina

- Optive Plus and Refresh Ultra, artificial tears to treat dry eye both contain castor oil

- Vishnevsky liniment also contains castor oil.

(c) Alternative Medicinal Uses of Castor Oil

In naturopathy, castor oil is promoted as a treatment for several human health conditions, including cysts. However, according to the American Cancer Society:

"Available scientific evidence does

not support claims that castor oil on

the skin cures cancer or any other

disease."

(d) Castor Oil in Skin and Hair Care

Castor oil is used in cosmetic products including creams and moisturisers. Small amounts of castor oil are frequently used in soap to increase lathering in the finished bar. It has also been used to enhance hair conditioners and anti-dandruff products.

(e) The Use of Castor Oil in Coatings

Castor oil is used in the polyurethane industry, where it is widely used as a rigid polyol and in coatings. One particular use is in polyurethane concrete where a castor-oil emulsion is used with cement to make a construction aggregate. This is applied fairly thickly as a slurry which is self-levels to build a resilient floor.

It is not a drying oil, meaning that it has a low reactivity with air compared to oils such as linseed oil and tung oil.

(f) Castor Oil as a Precursor to Industrial Chemicals

Castor oil can be broken down into other chemical compounds that have numerous applications.

Transesterification followed by steam cracking gives undecylenic acid, a precursor to specialized polymer nylon 11, and heptanal, a component in fragrances.

Breakdown of castor oil gives 2-octanol, both a fragrance component and a specialized solvent.

Hydrogenation of castor oil produces a waxy lubricant.

Castor oil can be epoxidized to make the triglycidyl ether of castor oil which is useful in epoxy technology. This is available commercially as Heloxy.

The production of lithium grease consumes a significant amount of castor oil. Hydrogenation and saponification of castor oil yields a high performance lubricant grease.

Since it has a relatively high dielectric constant, highly refined and dried castor oil is sometimes used as a dielectric fluid within high performance high voltage capacitors.

(g) Castor Oil as a Lubricant

Vegetable oils are generally unattractive alternatives to petroleum-derived lubricants because of their poor oxidative stability. Castor oil has better low-temperature viscosity properties and high-temperature lubrication than most vegetable oils, making it useful as a lubricant in jet, diesel, and racing engines.

The lubricant company Castrol took its name from castor oil.

However, castor oil tends to form gums in a short time, and therefore its usefulness is limited to engines that are regularly rebuilt, such as racing engines.

Castor oil is also used as a lubricant for bicycle pumps because it does not degrade natural rubber seals.

(h) Early Aviation and Aeromodelling

World War I aviation engines used castor oil as a primary lubricant, mixed with the fuel.

Castor oil was the preferred lubricant for rotary engines, such as the Gnome engine after that engine's widespread adoption for aviation in Europe in 1909.

It was used almost universally in rotary engined Allied aircraft in World War I. Germany had to make do with inferior ersatz oil for its rotary engines, which resulted in poor reliability.

Methanol-fuelled two-cycle engines used for aeromodelling, since their adoption by model airplane hobbyists in the 1940's, have used varying percentages of castor oil as a lubricant. It is highly resistant to degradation when the engine has its fuel-air mixture leaned for maximum engine speed.

Gummy residues can still be a problem for aeromodelling powerplants lubricated with castor oil, however, usually requiring eventual replacement of ball bearings when the residue accumulates within the engine's bearing races.

One British manufacturer of sleeve valved four-cycle model engines has stated the "varnish" created by using castor oil in small percentages can improve the pneumatic seal of the sleeve valve, improving the engine's performance over time.

(i) The Use of Castor Oil in Turkey Red Oil

Turkey red oil, also called sulphonated castor oil, is made by adding sulphuric acid to vegetable oils, most notably castor oil. It was the first synthetic detergent after ordinary soap.

(j) Castor Oil in Biodiesel

Castor oil, like less expensive vegetable oils, can be used as feedstock in the production of biodiesel. The resulting fuel is superior for cold winters, because of its exceptionally low cloud point and pour point.

Initiatives to grow more castor for energy production, in preference to other oil crops, are motivated by social considerations. Tropical subsistence farmers would gain a cash crop.

(k) Castor Oil as an Instrument for Punishment and Torture

Some parents used to punish children with a dose of castor oil. Physicians recommended against the practice because they did not want medicines associated with punishment.

A heavy dose of castor oil could be used as a humiliating punishment for adults. Colonial officials used it in the British Raj (India) to deal with recalcitrant servants. Belgian military officials prescribed heavy doses of castor oil in the Belgian Congo as a punishment for being too sick to work.

The most famous use of castor oil as punishment came in Fascist Italy under Benito Mussolini. It was a favourite tool used by the Blackshirts to intimidate and humiliate their opponents. Political dissidents were force-fed large quantities of castor oil by Fascist squads.

Victims of this treatment sometimes died, as the dehydrating effects of the oil-induced diarrhoea often complicated the recovery from the nightstick beating they also received along with the castor oil.

However, even those victims who survived had to bear the humiliation of the laxative effects resulting from excessive consumption of the oil. It is believed that the Nazi SA used this torture method against German Jews shortly after the appointment of Adolf Hitler as Chancellor of Germany in 1933.

It is said that Mussolini's power was backed by "The bludgeon and castor oil".

In lesser quantities, castor oil was also used as an instrument of intimidation, for example, to discourage civilians or soldiers who would call in sick.

Today, the Italian terms manganello and olio di ricino still carry strong political connotations. The words are used to satirise patronising politicians, or the authors of disliked legislation. The terms Usare l'olio di ricino, ("to use castor oil") and usare il manganello ("to use the bludgeon") mean "to coerce or abuse".

The Safety of Olive Oil

The castor seed contains ricin, a toxic lectin. Heating during the oil extraction process denatures and deactivates the lectin. However, harvesting castor beans may not be without risk.

The International Castor Oil Association FAQ document states that castor beans contain an allergenic compound called CB1A. This chemical is described as being virtually non-toxic, but has the capacity to sensitize people with hypersensitivity. The allergen may be neutralized by treatment with a variety of alkaline agents. The allergen is not present in the castor oil itself.

These health issues, in addition to concerns about the toxic by-product (ricin) from castor oil production, have encouraged the quest for alternative sources for hydroxy fatty acids. Alternatively, some researchers are trying to genetically modify the castor plant to prevent the synthesis of ricin.

Since castor oil is sometimes used to induce labor in full-term pregnancies (scientific evidence of its effectiveness is lacking, however), consuming castor oil to treat constipation is not considered safe in pregnancies that are not at full term yet, as it may cause contractions of the womb.

ʻAhakea lau nui*

Rubiaceae (Coffee family)

Bobea is a Hawaiian endemic genus of 4 species

Kalauao Trail, Koʻolau Mts., Oʻahu

This ʻahakea (Bobea elatior) is the most widespread of four species in the endemic genus Bobea.

ʻAhakea lau nui is the centerpiece tree with two indigenous ephiphytes on growing on it: ʻēkaha (Asplenium nidus) or bird's nest fern and moa nahele or flat-stemmed whiskfern (Psilotum complanatum) are in this tree.

Early Hawaiians had many uses for ʻahakea. It was used for canoe (waʻa) construction, the hard yellowish or reddish wood of ʻahakea was the most favorite wood for making gunwales strakes (moʻo), the forward end piece (lāʻau ihu), and the aft piece (lāʻau hope). Canoe paddles were also made from ʻahakea wood.

It was also the preferred to frame hale (house) doorways and door frames (lapauila) because the reddish or yellowish colored wood was a chiefly color.

Poi boards (papa kuʻi poi) were made from ʻahakea because its close grained wood.

ʻAhakea, mixed with kukui nuts, was also used medicinally to help with abseces, burst sores (ʻili pūhō); scar, perhaps tuberculosis; (ʻalaʻala); and itch, ulcer (meʻeau). The bark and leaves were boiled and used to bathe in.

Medicinally, moa (Psilotum spp.) was used byt he early Hawaiians for kūkae paʻa (constipation) in newborn babies and elderly men and women. It was also mixed with other plants to treat akepau (tuberculosis, consumption), and various respiratory conditions. Additionally, extracts from moa were used as laxatives. The spores were used for diarrhea in infants and used like talcum powder to prevent chafing from loincloths.

Moa was also used in lei making by early Hawaiians.

Early Hawaiian children would play a simple game of moa nahele (lit., chicken vegetation). "Plants in Hawaiian Culture" explains how this game was played: “Two children sat or stood facing one another, each holding a branched stem of moa. These they interlocked and then slowly pulled apart until the branches of one broke. The other child, without broken branches, was the winner and announced his victory by crowing like a rooster (moa).” One of the names ʻoʻō moa in fact means "cock's crow."

Etymology

The generic name Bobea is named by Charles Gaudichaud-Beaupré in 1830 for Jean-Baptiste Bobe-Moreau, physician and pharmacist in the French Marine.

The specific epithet elatior is Latin for higher or best.

_____

* The name ʻAhakea lau nui literally means "ʻahakea with big leaves."

Cat Constipation : Causes-Signs-Symptoms-Remedies-Treatment

What is Cat Cosntipation ?

Cat Constipation or bowel - difficult frequent movement is one of the most common problems associated with health digestive system of a pet. Usually cats have at least one bowel movement every day healthy. But if your cat passes hard, dry stools, straining to defecate When you try and make fruitless trips to the litter, please consult your veterinarian. These symptoms may indicate a health problem underlying.

Most cats have one or two bowel movements a day. However, some cats have a bowel movement every two or three days. These cats are very likely to be constipated. Constipation is the frequent passage of small stools, hard and dry. When the stools are retained in the colon for two to three days, they become dry and hard. This results in deformation and pain during defecation.

Constipation is defined as the passage of the few small, hard, dry stools. There is no serial number of stools of a cat must take in a day, but one or two is pretty average. Constipation can affect cats of any age but is most commonly seen in middle-aged to older cats people.

Eye also occurs with colitis and feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD. Make sure the cat does not suffer from any of these conditions before treating constipation. Neglected urethral obstruction is severe Especially because it can cause kidney damage and death.

Chronic constipation leads to a condition known as megacolon, in which the colon becomes abnormally dilated and enlarged and lose its ability to contract. This ultimately can lead to constipation, Que is a complete blockage.

Constipation Must always be considered, because it can be a symptom of diabetes, hyperthyroidism, obstruction of the rectum or a hernia.

What causes constipation?

What Causes Cats To Become Constipated?

Dehydration: Water is reabsorbed in the colon and if the cat is dehydrated, the body will try to conserve water by eliminating additional water in the stool.

Reluctance to defecate because of behavioral problems. Dirty litter boxes, do not want to share a litter box, etc.

Cancer.

Obstruction of the colon: There are many possible causes of obstruction, including congenital anomalies, hairballs, tumors, polyps, ingestion of a foreign body.

Food: that diets low in fiber may cause constipation. Ingestion of food container containing hair and bone which cause a blockage.

Drugs and medicines: antihistamines, diuretics and some antibiotics are medications that can cause constipation in cats.

Low-fiber diet .

Hairballs / excessive grooming.

Blocked or anal sacs abscess.

Enlargement of the prostate.

Matted hair on the buttocks.

The ingestion of foreign bodies such as: string, fabric, bones, etc..

Tumor or other intestinal obstruction.

Neurological disorder.

Obesity.

Colonic motility or abnormal shape.

Secondary effect of a drug.

Cat Constipation Symptoms And Signs

How Do I know If My cat Is Constipated?

If your cat suffers from any of these symptoms, consult your vet please. These signs can also be symptoms of Urinary disorders, it is important that your veterinarian can help you determine the cause immediately:

Weight Loss.

Small, dry, hard stools, perhaps covered in blood or mucous Frequent, unproductive trips to the litter.

Loss of appetite Lack of grooming.

Tender or cry in pain when he try to eliminate..

Lethargy.

Vomiting.

Display of abdominal discomfort.

Cat Constipation Remedy And Treatment

How Can You Treat Your Cat Constipation?

Cat Constipation Cure: Depending on what causes constipation your cat, your vet will recommend one or more of the following treatments in May:

Give your cat a half-teaspoon of petroleum jelly per day, while your cat is constipated.

Emollient

Add a few teaspoons of pumpkin in your cat's food to enter their high fiber diet.

Give an anti-constipation drug approved in vegetable oil. Use a calibrated dropper or 5 - 10ml syringe (ask your veterinarian or pharmacist for one) and give the cat 7-10 drops of vegetable oil.

Laxative

Enema (administered by a professional, not at home, please). It is important to note that cats do not take kindly to these procedures, and some over-the-counter enemas containing substances can be toxic to cats. It is preferable to let your veterinarian procedure.

Drugs to increase the contractile force of the large intestine.

Manual evacuation of bowels.

Surgery to remove a bowel obstruction.

Veterinary prescribed diet rich in fiber.

Cat Constipation Pumpkin: Adding fiber to your cat's diet with canned pumpkin, bran cereals or of a product such as Metamucil.

Increased water consumption.

Increase the exercise.

Cats with chronic or recurrent episodes of constipation may benefit from a diet rich in fiber. Some foods of commercial weight loss formulas and some balls to prevent cat hair are rich in fiber. There are also rich in fiber prescription regimes: such as Science Diet w / d, Royal Canin HiFactor Formula Feline Formula and Purina OM. However, some veterinarians believe that a low-carb diet (and, therefore, low in fiber) may be better for constipated cats. They suggest that feed the cat canned food for the increased water content and low in carbohydrates, adding 1 teaspoon (1.2 g) rice bran or psyllium powder, if necessary. For mild constipation, laxatives forming addition is beneficial. These laxatives absorb water in the colon, soften the stool and promote more frequent defecation. Wheat bran (1 tablespoon, 3.6 g per day), plain canned pumpkin (1 teaspoon, 5 g twice daily) or Metamucil (1 teaspoon, 5 g per day mix in wet food) is recommended. Lactulose, a synthetic sugar which draws water into the intestine, is useful and can often be powdered and put into capsules if your cat does not eat his food. Bulk laxatives can be used indefinitely without causing a problem.

Cat Constipation Emergency

Stimulant laxatives are effective for constipation, but interferes with the simple use of bowel function may repeatedly. Several products are available for cats that are made, including Kat-a-lax and Laxatone. The latter is particularly effective for cats with hairballs. These products should never be used if there is a possibility of an obstruction. Always consult your veterinarian before giving your cat a laxative product.

Advice To Prevent Cat Constipation

How Do I Prevent My Cat from Becoming Constipated?

Make sure your cat has access to plenty of water. If your cat eats only dry food, try feeding the canned food to introduce more moisture in the diet.

Try feeding the cat a bit of tuna in oil.

Always make sure you play with your cat - Can I get one!

Make sure you have plenty of fresh water at all times.

Make sure that this is not just a matter of a dirty litter box, some cats avoid litter that is overlooked.

Give your cat a little milk.

If you have a long haired cat, trim the hair around your back cats, to keep the hair from tangling. This will keep the area clean and help prevent constipation hair tangle inside the anus.

If your cat takes to it, increasing its food canned . Even better, mix in a little canned pumpkin food. If your cat prefers dry food, find the brand with the highest fiber content. Some owners swear over-the-counter products such as Metamucil, can really help.

Keep a litter box, and maintain. Clean litter will encourage your cat to use regularly, because sometimes cats refuse to use a dirty litter box, Que can cause constipation.

If you catch the problem early, there are some remedies that you can try. For example, try giving your cat a touch of petroleum jelly. Dab on his nose or front legs and she will probably lick it.

If your cat litter Prevents Because he associate it with pain, it will leave small hard balls in other places, such as the hallway or bath. or If you have a litter box with a lid, remove the lid so that you can observe its behavior litter. or If your cat goes outside, keep the considerable inside for some time so that you can observe this symptom.

When you give the med vegetable oil or liquid for animals, be sure to rinse the dropper or syringe in warm water and dedicate its use to an animal. Discard medicament after the instrument is completed.

Laxatone comes in a tube and inserted into the cat's food for easy consumption.

While petroleum jelly has long been used for constipation and hair balls, it should not be used on a long term basis, it is after all a petroleum product and not really healthy for consumption.

cat constipation olive oil: You can give your cat as olive oil.

Make sure your cat is eating a balanced diet suitable for cats. In case of doubt as to what to feed your cat properly, ask the vet for a diet. Answer Medi Cal Fibre could help where a cat is chronically constipated.

This Can Happen If The Constipation Is Not Treated?

If your cat constipation is not attenuated, constipation - the inability to empty the colon on its own may occur. In this state, the colon is an uncomfortable baskets with a large amount of feces, causing unproductive deformation, lethargy, loss of appetite and maybe even vomiting. This can cause swelling of the colon and of the loss of colonic motility of your cat.

40 Points about Wheat grass & its Nutritional Values

1. Wheatgrass Juice is one of the best sources of living chlorophyll available.

2. Chlorophyll is the first product of light and, therefore, contains more light energy than any other element.

3. Wheatgrass juice is a crude chlorophyll and can be taken orally and as a colon implant without toxic side effects.

4. Chlorophyll is the basis of all plant life.

5. Wheatgrass is high in oxygen like all green plants that contain chlorophyll. The brain and all body tissues function at an optimal level in a highly-oxygenated environment.

6. Chlorophyll is anti-bacterial and can be used inside and outside the body as a healer.

7. Dr. Bernard Jensen says that it only takes minutes to digest wheatgrass juice and uses up very little body energy.

8. Science has proven that chlorophyll arrests growth and development of unfriendly bacteria.

9. Chlorophyll (wheatgrass) rebuilds the bloodstream. Studies of various animals have shown chlorophyll to be free of any toxic reaction. The red cell count was returned to normal within 4 to 5 days of the administration of chlorophyll, even in those animals which were known to be extremely anemic or low in red cell count.

10. Farmers in the Midwest who have sterile cows and bulls put them on wheatgrass to restore fertility. (The high magnesium content in chlorophyll builds enzymes that restore the sex hormones.)

11. Chlorophyll can be extracted from many plants, but wheatgrass is superior because it has been found to have over 100 elements needed by man. If grown in organic soil, it absorbs 92 of the known 102 minerals from the soil.

12. Wheatgrass has what is called the grass-juice factor, which has been shown to keep herbivorous animals alive indefinitely.

13. Dr. Ann Wigmore and institutes based on her teachings has been helping people get well from chronic disorders for 30 years using wheatgrass. 14. Liquid chlorophyll gets into the tissues, refines them and makes them over.

15. Wheatgrass Juice is a superior detoxification agent compared to carrot juice and other fruits and vegetables. Dr Earp-Thomas, associate of Ann Wigmore, says that 15 pounds of Wheatgrass is the equivalent of 350 pounds of carrot, lettuce, celery, and so forth.

16. Liquid chlorophyll washes drug deposits from the body.

17. Chlorophyll neutralizes toxins in the body.

18. Chlorophyll helps purify the liver.

19. Chlorophyll improves blood sugar problems.

20. In the American Journal of Surgery (1940), Benjamin Gruskin, M.D. recommends chlorophyll for its antiseptic benefits. The article suggests the following clinical uses for chlorophyll: to clear up foul smelling odors, neutralize Strep infections, heal wounds, hasten skin grafting, cure chronic sinusitis, overcome chronic inner-ear inflammation and infection, reduce varicose veins and heal leg ulcers, eliminate impetigo and other scabby eruptions, heal rectal sores, successfully treat inflammation of the uterine cervix, get rid of parasitic vaginal infections, reduce typhoid fever, and cure advanced pyorrhea in many cases.

21. Wheatgrass Juice cures acne and even help to remove scars after it has been ingested for seven to eight months. The diet must be improved at the same time.

22. Wheatgrass juice acts as a detergent in the body and is used as a body deodorant.

23. A small amount of wheatgrass juice in the human diet helps prevents tooth decay.

24. Wheatgrass juice held in the mouth for 5 minutes will help eliminate toothaches. It pulls poisons from the gums.

25. Gargle Wheat grass Juice for a sore throat.

26. Drink Wheatgrass Juice for skin problems such as eczema or psoriasis.

27. Wheat grass Juice keeps the hair from graying.

28. Pyorrhea of the mouth: lay pulp of wheatgrass soaked in juice on diseased area in mouth or chew wheat grass, spitting out the pulp.

29. By taking Wheat grass Juice, one may feel a difference in strength, endurance, health, and spirituality, and experience a sense of well-being.

30. Wheatgrass juice improves the digestion.

31. Wheat grass juice is high in enzymes.

32. Wheatgrass juice is an excellent skin cleanser and can be absorbed through the skin for nutrition. Pour green juice over your body in a tub of warm water and soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse off with cold water.

33. Wheatgrass implants (enemas) are great for healing and detoxifying the colon walls. The implants also heal and cleanse the internal organs. After an enema, wait 20 minutes, then implant 4 ounces of wheatgrass juice. Retain for 20 minutes.

34. Wheatgrass juice is great for constipation and keeping the bowels open. It is high in magnesium.

35. Dr. Birscher, a research scientist, called chlorophyll "concentrated sun power." He said, "chlorophyll increases the function of the heart, affects the vascular system, the intestines, the uterus, and the lungs."

36. According to Dr. Birscher, nature uses chlorophyll (wheatgrass) as a body cleanser, rebuilder, and neutralizer of toxins.

37. Wheat grass juice can dissolve the scars that are formed in the lungs from breathing acid gasses. The effect of carbon monoxide is minimized since chlorophyll increases hemoglobin production.

38. Wheatgrass Juice reduces high blood pressure and enhances the capillaries.

39. Wheat grass Juice can remove heavy metals from the body.

40. Wheatgrass juice is great for blood disorders of all kinds

The preachers spent much of their time mentioning the Devil, but in my eyes the Devil was the one holding the microphone, waving a book around, trying to inflict their misery on everyone else...

...* DRINK WATER ON EMPTY STOMACH*

It is popular in Japan today to drink water immediately after waking up

every morning. Furthermore, scientific tests have proven a its value. We

publish below a description of use of water for our readers. For old and

serious diseases as well as modern illnesses the water treatment had been

found successful by a Japanese med ical society as a 100% cure for the

following diseases:

Headache, body ache, heart system, arthritis, fast heart beat, epilepsy,

excess fatness, bronchitis asthma, TB, meningitis, kidney and urine

diseases, vomiting, ga str itis, diarrhea, piles, diabetes, constipation,

all eye diseases, womb, cancer and ear nose and throat diseases. *

METHOD OF TREATMENT*

1. As you wake up in the morning *before brushing teeth*, drink 4 x 160ml

glasses of water .....interesting

2. Brush and clean the mouth but do not eat or drink anything for 45 minutes

3. After 45 minutes you may eat and drink as normal.

4. After 15 minutes of breakfast, lunch and dinner do not eat or drink

anything for 2 hours

5. Those who are old or sick and are unable to drink 4 glasses of water at

the beginning may commence by taking little water and gradually increase it

to 4 glasses per day.

6. The above method of treatment will cure diseases of the sick and others

can enjoy a healthy life.

The following list gives the number of days of treatment required to

cure/control/reduce main diseases:

1. High Blood Pressure - 30 days

2. Ga str ic - 10 days

3. Diabetes - 30 days

4. Constipation - 10 days

5. Cancer - 180 days

6. TB - 90 days

7. Arthritis patients should follow the above treatment only for 3 days in

the 1st week, and from 2nd week onwa rd s - daily.

This treatment method has no side effects, however at the commencement of

treatment you may have to urinate a few times.

It is better if we continue this and make this procedure as a routine work

in our life.

Drink Water and Stay healthy and Active.

This makes sense .. The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals

..not cold water. Maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while

eating!!! Nothing to lose, everything to gain...

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.

It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water

will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed . It will slow down

the digestion.

Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed

by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine.

Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink

hot soup or warm water after a meal.

*

A serious note about heart attacks*: Women should know that not every heart

attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting.

Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.

You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart

attack..

Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.

60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up.

Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be

aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive...

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it to everyone they

know, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life.

...* DRINK WATER ON EMPTY STOMACH*

Jus to check this out.......

The Organs of your body have their sensory touches at the bottom of your

foot, if you massage these points you will find relief from aches and pains

as you can see the heart is on the left foot.

Typically they are shown as points and arrows to show which organ it

connects to.

It is indeed correct since the nerves connected to these organs terminate

here.

This is covered in great details in Acupressure studies or textbooks.

God created our body so well that he thought of even this. He made us walk

so that we will always be pressing these pressure points and thus keeping

these organs activated at all times.

So, keep walking...

Pelvic floor repair surgery is the most common surgery for pelvic organ prolapse. Pelvic floor repair is a broad term used to classify a variety of simple, surgical procedures for repairing the pelvic floor. The three surgeries for pelvic floor prolapse include anterior repair, posterior repair, and a hysterectomy.

Although Restore Your Core does not provide any surgical treatment for pelvic floor issues, my hope is that this article may answer any questions you may have regarding pelvic floor repair and the various procedures and treatments involved in getting you back to a healthy, active lifestyle.

What are the Symptoms of Pelvic Organ Prolapse?

Prolapse can affect several abdominal organs. These organs are said to prolapse if they descend into or out of the vaginal canal or anus. The medical terminology for these occurrences include:

Cystocele: prolapse of the bladder into the vagina, the most common condition

Urethrocele: prolapse of the urethra (the tube that carries urine)

Uterine prolapse

Vaginal vault prolapse: prolapse of the vagina

Enterocele: Small bowel prolapse

Rectocele: Rectum prolapse

What Causes Pelvic Organ Prolapse?

There are many factors that are thought to cause a prolapse. In most cases, anything that may apply or put increased pressure in the abdomen can lead to a pelvic organ prolapse. Some of the common causes may include:

Pregnancy, labor, and childbirth are the most common causes

Obesity

Connective tissue disorders

Respiratory problems with a chronic, long-term cough

Constipation

Genetic factors

Pelvic organ cancers

Surgical removal of the uterus (hysterectomy)

Diastasis recti (weakened core, connective tissues)

Symptoms

The symptoms of a prolapse somewhat depend on which organ has descended. If you are suffering from a bladder prolapse, urinary incontinence may occur. If it is a rectal prolapse, constipation, painful bowel movements, and painful sex often occur. Lower back pain, painful sex, and bowel obstruction or incontinence tend to accompany a small intestine prolapse as well. If you are suffering from a prolapse of the uterus, you may also suffer from uncomfortable intercourse, incontinence, and lower back pain.

In some cases, there may never be signs of a prolapse or the presence of any painful symptoms. However, in others some women report symptoms ranging from:

Pressure or sense of fullness in the pelvic area

Lower back pain

Painful sex

Sensation of something falling out of the vagina

Urinary incontinence or frequent urination

Constipation

Spotting or bleeding from the vagina

In cases where there may be a severe prolapse, POP symptoms may worsen. One may notice:

Bulging of the vaginal region

Needing manual assistance during a bowel movement

Difficulty urinating, spraying stream of urine

The need to lift the bulging vagina in order to urinate

Urinary leakage during intercourse

Recurrent UTIs or kidney infections

How long does a pelvic floor repair operation take?

The length of the surgical procedure can vary greatly from patient to patient. The general estimate for the surgery ranges from around 3-5 hours, but may have a shorter or longer duration depending on various factors. Some of the elements that may determine the length of the operation can include:

Internal anatomy

Shape of the pelvis

Weight

Internal scarring or inflammation

Prior abdominal/pelvic floor surgery

Does Surgery Really Work?

Surgery to fix a uterine prolapse are usually successful. In most patients the surgeries for POP have been reported to have an 80% – 95% success rate.

The success rate for sacrospinous ligament fixation (surgery to correct the bulging of the vagina) ranges between 80% – 90%, for uterosacral ligament suspension (surgery restoring support to the top of the vagina) is also 80%-90% successful, and sacrocolpopexy (surgery fixing the vaginal vault and the cervix) and sacrohysteropexy (fixing the prolapse of the uterus) have also shown the same success rate.

However, even after prolapse surgery, there is still a chance that another part of the vagina or uterus may prolapse.

What Can I Expect After POP Surgery?

These are the general guidelines that doctors will usually give post POP OP (this is not medical advice): Each day in recovery you can expect to begin to feel stronger. During your recovery, you may need to remain on pain medication for about a week or two and may experience fatigue and weakness. A typical recovery time line varies from 4 to 6 weeks until you recover from an open surgery and anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks to recover from vaginal surgery. Your doctor should give you more specific guidelines.

During your recovery period, you should avoid any sexual activity, vigorous exercise, heavy lifting, or any activities that may put pressure or strain your operation area. Your doctor should give you more specific guidelines. The most important aspect to your quick recovery is rest – getting enough sleep will help you recover.

During your recovery, you might experience vaginal discharge or light bleeding. If so, avoid using tampons or douche. Use a sanitary pad if necessary. Your doctor should give you more specific guidelines.

How long do you stay in the hospital after prolapse surgery?

After your prolapse surgery, it is likely that you will need to remain hospitalized for 2 – 3 days depending on the operation and any underlying medical conditions you have. During this time your medical care takers will help ensure your recovery by monitoring for any potential complications and providing clean, sanitized treatment of the operation site.

Are There Complications with Prolapse Surgery?

Although pelvic surgery has proven to be a very safe procedure, as with any surgery, there are a few risks and potential complications that can arise. Please discuss this with your doctor but the common ones include:

Bleeding

Infection

Tissue or organ injury

Hernia

Conversion to open surgery

Urinary incontinence

Urinary retention

Vesicovaginal fistula (rare, abnormal connection between vagina and bladder)

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms of complications, it is important that you seek medical assistance. In some cases these symptoms can be common and unserious, but it is always best to consult your doctor if you have any concerns.

Can pelvic floor muscles be repaired?

If you have experienced a prolapse, uterine or otherwise, it can be a shocking and painful experience. However, there are ways to decrease symptoms without surgery.

Nonsurgical Treatments

There are several ways in which to treat a uterine or vaginal prolapse. The three most common approaches are pessary, restorative exercises, and biofeedback therapy.

Pessary

A pessary is probably one of the first treatments your doctor will recommend if you have symptoms of POP. A pessary is a ring shaped device that is inserted into your vagina. This will help support your pelvic organs. Being fitted for a pessary is a lot like being fitted for a diaphragm. Many of my clients with severe POP find that a pessary is useful for allowing them to live fuller lives while they slowly use PT and exercise to help resolve the prolapse.

Restorative Exercises & Physical Therapy

Pelvic floor exercises help strengthen your pelvic muscles. Although the most common exercise recommended by health professionals today is the kegel exercise, there are many more exercises that you can do that are helpful for restoring PF function and giving support for your pelvic organs. Kegels are a pretty outdated model of care when used alone, without a more whole body approach to healing.

What is involved in pelvic floor reconstruction?

Pelvic floor reconstruction surgery is a group of procedures that are performed to treat prolapse of uterus, rectum, small intestines, or other pelvic organs.

Anterior Vaginal Repair

Anterior repair is a surgical procedure that seeks to reinforce weakened layers between the bladder and the vagina. This surgery helps relieve symptoms such as vaginal bulging and to improve bladder function.

The surgery can be performed under general anaesthetic. The most common method of anterior repair is by an incision made along the centre of the front wall of the vagina – starting at the entrance and ending at the top of the vagina. The weakened layers are then repaired and anu superfluous tissue is removed. This is typically done with absorbable stitches.

Posterior Vaginal Repair

A back wall (posterior) vaginal prolapse is usually caused by weakness in the tissues and muscles that divide the vagina from the lower part of the bowel. This surgical procedure is performed to order to repair or restore the weakened layers between the rectum and the vagina.

As with an anterior vaginal repair surgery, posterior repair surgery is usually performed under general anesthetic. The procedure involves a minor incision being made along the back wall of the vagina starting at the entrance and finishing near the top. The weakened layers are then repaired using absorbable stitches.

Vaginal Hysterectomy

A vaginal hysterectomy is typically performed with a prolapsed uterus. This is when the uterus (womb) descends into the vagina and in some severe cases, protrudes or extends outside of the vaginal canal. The surgery is performed by removing the uterus through the vagina.

A vaginal hysterectomy is performed under general or spinal anaesthetic. In order to remove the uterus, the surgeon will make an incision at the top of the vagina around the cervix, clears the bowel and bladder from the uterus, and cuts through the connecting tissues to remove the uterus. The surgeon will then close the vaginal vault and commonly adds additional supporting stitches as the surgery is being performed.

Does Physical Therapy Help Post-Surgery?

If you are meeting with a physical / occupational therapist or taking part in a rehabilitation program Restore Your Core, post-surgery, some of the common exercises and techniques consist of:

Posture

Spine, pelvis, and hip alignment is necessary for a sustained recovery. Being mindful of good posture will help relieve any additional strain or pressure you apply to your pelvic region.

Restful Poses

These poses are positions which utilize gravity to encourage the pelvic organs to be “repositioned” back into the pelvic cavity.

Lower abdominal Exercises

This involves contracting the lower abdominal muscles while practicing dynamic and static exercises. If done correctly, it can limit the stress placed on the interior organs during activities which increase intra-abdominal pressure (i.e. squats).

PFM Strengthening

PFM strengthening exercises are a great way to help get your body back to its normal function and to heal from POP surgery. I advise getting instruction from a pelvic floor specialist who is trained in assessing the whole person to determine the appropriate exercise routines for you.

In my program, Restore Your Core, I cover many helpful exercises and routines that can help heal POP and any abdominal or core issues. To learn more about restorative exercises for uterine prolapse or other abdominal issues, consider checking out one of my previous blog posts on core workouts and exercises.

We are surrounded by environmental pollutants, toxins, non nutrient dense diets and constant stress all of which affect our immune system causing it to weaken and be susceptible to disease. Yoga is an integral part of Vedic sciences propagates the entire cultural, spiritual and natural wisdom of cultivating our body and mind. Adding yoga into your life is an awesome way to build a strong defense system for your body.

Yoga for Immune System:

There are specific yoga postures that can help cleanse your body and release toxins, germs and infections. Our immune system consists of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body. These defensive cells are located in our white blood cells. They are transferred around the body by the lymphatic system. The lymph nodes move through the body by muscle contractions, unlike blood, which is pumped naturally by the heart. And Inversions do a great job in helping the heart pump blood more effectively.

Yoga provides holistic approaches for living life to its fullest. Yoga is all about harmonizing the body with the mind and breath through the means of various pranayama (breathing techniques), asanas (yoga postures) and dhyana (meditation) techniques.

**SPOILER ALERT!** Think I figured out what it is.. Posted at bottom.

TAKEN: 2014.07.12; Summer warm with some muggy leftover from yesterday's short rain

I like to label these shots "BBSW"... bird butt says what. This one actually needs ID. I do have better pics of their side view, this is just a teaser until I can get the rest up. That GREAT camouflage going on there is why this one was chosen for now.

Also just took a better video of one of these guys running around on the walkway feet from my own feet. I know what I think they are but haven't found a pic that matches well enough. That tells me I'm surely wrong so I'm throwing it out there to see if anyone knows. I've got an old 1966 Golden Birds of North America that I've found 3 totally different birds that are possibilities. Pics online, though, aren't coming close enough for a positive ID.

The one I think it is the most.... Cornell's All About Birds range map says should be nowhere near here right now, let alone breeding. The pic you're looking at is the rearend of a fledgling that was being fed by an adult just seconds before.

Biggest hint I've got right now is they wobble like nobody's business. They look like their shocks fell off 3 miles back yonder. Almost takes Dramamine to watch the couple videos I'll be uploading to Youtube hopefully soon. For a split second when I first saw them, I thought they had a health issue like constipation or a defecation problem. That's what the behavior looks like but it's species specific behavior because they're all doing it.... *A LOT*... even when standing still.

They run like I've seen Killdeer, Robins, and Thrashers do. And I've got a quick video blip of the flight that is straight across, low to the ground and inspires images of birds moving in brush.. They seem to favor poking around in brushy areas (overgrown areas and intentionally placed birdie escape brush piles).

So... what birds wobble like Weebles... and would be breeding in North Central Georgia right now..? :)

** SPOILER ALERT! ** Think I figured out what these birds are.......

*I THINK*... these guys are Louisiana Waterthrush (LOWA, Seiurus motacilla/Parkesia motacilla).. Breeding range is right, for one thing. Tail bobbing and pink legs are LOWA identifiers, too. Waterthrush was one of the three birds that stood out in the birding guide book.. It's just a little harder to make a positive ID when you're looking at drawings rather than the real deal. :)

They're grouped in with warblers, which shocked me. They're water favoring... warblers. And somewhere I read the "thrush" part of their name is for resembling... thrushes. I'll vouch for that. For a tiny split second, I thought they WERE your usual garden variety Thrushes until I realized... they weren't. :)

So about that water part, had a bad leak on the city's side of my water meter. Took your typical amount of government time before it was fixed. I actually started thinking they might be contemplating taxes on... waterfront property because of a little stream that started running. Having Waterthrushes make their first appearance at the same time is a pretty funny coincidence.. They're sure not shy about hitting the various bird baths set up out front here, too. :)

And PS Not just me intrigued with these newcomers. Carolina Wrens have been voicing an alert the last couple days.. And I caught a Tufted Titmouse that flew down and sat about a foot above one earlier today. Titmouse sat there twisting its head from one side to the other as it sized up the newcomer. Very funny to witness. I take it Waterthrushes aren't something any of these guys see in the nearby surrounding wild, either. Interesting :)

You did it. You birthed a bouncing baby and your body is in recovery from enduring the sheer awesomeness that is childbirth. As the months that follow unfold and that baby starts to grow, you can’t help but shake the feeling that something is not quite right down there. Why is peeing so weird now? When did my body decide it was okay to just leak out said pee every time I cough? Am I supposed to just wear panty liners all day every day just in case someone makes me laugh? Why does it feel like there is a bulge in my vagina?

Though it is a common post-birth issue, the first time you hear that you have pelvic organ prolapse may be frustrating and quite upsetting. I mean, your body was made to have babies. Why would something so natural cause such an issue?

Avoiding the S Word

Your doctor may suggest many treatment options to help prevent your prolapse from advancing to the point where they begin to start talking about surgery. Surgery is a SCARY word that we would like to help you avoid. Prolapse reconstruction surgery, or Vaginoplasty, may be recommended in advanced cases. However, if you aren’t severely prolapsed, there are steps you can take that may help you avoid surgery all together. Yes, early prolapse can be corrected without ever ending up under the knife. Even a grade 3.

Popular less invasive treatment offered can include vaginal pessaries and Kegels as the only form of pelvic floor treatment. Don’t hear me wrong, these can be very helpful, but I am more a fan of using a functional, whole body exercise approach to healing core and pelvic floor issues. Here at Restore your Core®, we are fellow partners of your health-focused team and are seriously invested in empowering you to make every movement throughout your everyday life healing. We believe and have seen first hand with many clients, that our 12-week program can train you to bring symptom relief and avoid the discussion of surgery altogether. No matter when you discover a prolapse, we always recommend 1 year of pelvic floor rehab before deciding on more drastic routes.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse: What is it?

First things first, let’s make sure we are all speaking the same language here: pelvic organ prolapse is the injury in which one or more of your pelvic organs “drop” from their normal position. Though bladder prolapse is the most common, any pelvic organ (bladder, uterus, rectum) can make the descent. This injury happens for a variety of reasons and sometimes, it is really not known why. Birth injury, core and pelvic floor muscle imbalances, postural misalignments, and excess intra ab pressure are all reasons one might sustain a prolapse.

If pelvic organ prolapse is allowed to advance to its fullest potential, the prolapsed organ will make its way down the path of least resistance into the vaginal canal. Eventually, the organ may exit the vaginal opening.

Different types of Pelvic Organ Prolapse include:

Bladder prolapse- Cystocele (the most common)

Rectum prolapse- Rectocele

Uterine Prolapse

Vaginal Vault Prolapse

Small Intestine Prolapse- Enterocele

Though pelvic organ prolapse can be caused by obesity, aging, and other stressors on the floor muscles, vaginal birth is the leading cause of prolapse. As you can imagine, vaginal birth does a number on those pelvic floor muscles because of the amount of stretch the pelvic floor muscle must undergo to make way for the baby’s grand entrance into the world. This is why it is pretty common to pelvic floor prolapse after childbirth.

How Do I Know if My Prolapse is Severe?

The severity of Pelvic Organ Prolapse has to be diagnosed by your healthcare provider, but the general rule of thumb for staging is:

Stage 1: Very minimal prolapse – organs still have a fair amount of support by the pelvic floor.

Stage 2: Pelvic floor organs have begun to drop, but they are still contained inside the vagina.

Stage 3: Pelvic floor organs have dropped to, or beyond the opening of the vagina.

Stage 4: Pelvic floor organs have dropped completely through the vaginal opening.

Stage 3 and 4 are when you may be experiencing the more severe effects of prolapse. If your prolapse is severe, you may experience a wide range of symptoms. Check out our other articles that break down the specifics for different types of pelvic organ prolapse. Some of the most common symptoms for severe prolapse can include but are not limited to :

the sensation that you are sitting on a ball

A dragging sensation or heaviness in the vagina

vaginal bleeding

increase or change in discharge

problems with or inability to engage in sexual intercourse

any pelvic organ protruding out of the vagina

a heavy feeling in the pelvic area

The feeling of trapped bubbles in your vagina

constipation or difficulty passing stool

recurring bladder infections or difficulty emptying your bladder

Incontinence, which is the inability to control when you pee.

If you experience any of these, contact your doctor. We recommend seeing a Urogyn to get tested, and ideal is to be tested standing up, not lying down.

Can Prolapse Correct Itself?

We have many clients who are not symptom free! Unfortunately, if left to its own devices, organ prolapse may continue getting worse if no intervention or treatment measures are taken. Our muscles and skeletal systems are the protectors and stabilizers of our organs. When our pelvic floor is just as strong as the rest of our core, straining and bearing down is countered within the core to keep all the organs in their assigned spots. Once the pelvic floor muscles have been compromised / weakened, they are no longer able to counter the force of your rest of your core.

If your prolapse is the result of a vaginal birth you had, you are likely to be doing some heavy lifting in the day to day life just to take care of your newest addition to your family. Every time you do heavy lifting, the force that is placed on your already prolapsed organ may push it further down the path of least resistance and right into your vaginal tissues. Because of this it is important to begin building a strong organ support system to help prevent pelvic organ prolapse from becoming worse.

Can I push a Prolapse back up?

When our insides decide to try to escape to the outside, it is time to get a professional involved. Though it may actually be possible to temporarily push fully prolapsed pelvic organs back into the vaginal opening, this is not a long term solution or an actual treatment. It is important to seek medical advice and see a pelvic floor therapist if severe symptomatic stage 3 or stage 4 prolapse occurs.

Why is My Prolapse Worse Some Days?

There are times during your cycle where you might feel worse. Hormonal changes can affect how your prolapse feels. This is common and even if you are doing great in your rehab process and this happens, do not panic! Many women feel it worse during ovulation. If you have just finished moving furniture around the house or gotten home from an intense workout just to be greeted with worse prolapse symptoms for the rest of the day, this is actually very normal for many women who suffer with pelvic organ prolapse. Straining on the toilet while trying to work through some constipation can also worsen your symptoms. When doing strenuous activities, we bear down and increase the pressure within ourselves and this can place even more pressure and force on the organs.

What should you not do with a prolapse?

You may have noticed a bulge in your vaginal wall, a lower hanging uterus or experienced a change in your urine, stool, or discharge pattern that makes you suspect a pelvic organ prolapse. As you seek medical advice, it is important to begin to treat your conditions by cutting back on strenuous exercise until you can build up your pelvic floor muscles through direct treatment. Prolapse can be frustrating to deal with to say the very least, but if there must be a silver lining, it is that the doctor has ordered you to get another family member to move that couch.

Here are the things to avoid when you have pelvic organ prolapse:

Avoid straining while on the toilet

Avoid being on your feet for long periods of time

Avoid lifting, pulling or straining

Avoid an intense workout routine – until you have a great core / pelvic floor strategy.

Here are the things TO DO when you have pelvic organ prolapse:

Make sure you hydrate frequently throughout the day

Eat all the fiber. Beans, veggies, fruits, you name it.

Educate yourself on prolapse, the core system, all of the connections that can increase and decrease pressure.

Consider a pelvic floor therapist, pelvic floor trained teacher, or Online program to guide you through healing.

How Can I Reverse Prolapse Without Surgery?

Pelvic organ prolapse may be reversed without invasive procedures like surgery. Working on your pelvic floor system in a functional way can begin to reverse the prolapse descent.

If I have not said it enough, I will say it again: always talk to your provider if you are experiencing symptoms that interfere with your daily routine and you are worried about.

Your doctor may recommend Kegel exercises as the only form of pelvic floor muscle treatment. Kegel exercises are the favorite prescription within the medical field for weakness in pelvic floor muscles but it is essentially an old school approach that fails to work for many and makes things worse for many others. We strongly believe in a more functional approach to the pelvic floor – one that incorporates the whole body for healing and works on integrating your pelvic floor into the whole system of pressure, load and movement.

Restore Your Core program was created to offer ways of treatment for women that does not involve just sitting and clenching your pelvic muscles a thousand times over, but rather teaches you patterns of movements that build a functional, responsive core and pelvic floor. RYC® is a whole body approach that takes your daily movements and patterns into account so that you can retrain your body all day long and not just when you are sprawled out on the floor doing your next set of Kegels. To our excitement, our hypothesis was confirmed when we began to hear feedback from women who had restored their core and minimized or eliminated prolapse symptoms. Give us 12 weeks, and we will show you how to champion your own core.

Scientific Name: Gynura Procumbens

This is a medicinal as well as an edible plant. The leaves are preferred to be eaten raw by me.

But someone is munching the leaves and leaving no presence!! It is eating faster than the leaves can grow! I had better solve this problem fast!

I know it is used to lower blood pressure; some people swear it helps in Type 2 diabetes and weight loss. I eat 3 to 5 leaves per week as a preventive measure. (But now I have to eat a bit more regularly... )

Anyone wants a plant just let me know. Google it and you can find that the claims to it being a diabetes curer has lots of supporters.

It is better known via its Chinese name called ‘jian feng wei’ (尖凤尾, which translates into ‘pointed phoenix tail’) and Indonesian name, daun sambung mjawa.

---------------------------------------------------------

Wiki:

Gynura procumbens (Sambung Nyawa in Malasyia) is a perennial plant of the Asteraceae family, that may grow to 100 cm high. Oval-shaped, leaves to 10cm long have a rather fleshy feel. Orange flowers are similar in size and form to milk thistle (Sonchus oleraceus). The plant is well known in South East Asia, with folklore uses in Thailand, Indonesia and China, and leaves of the plant are eaten as a vegetable. The plant is often referred to as Sambung Nyawa which means 'Continuation of Life'.

The herb has anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-allergy properties. Some of its uses include - migraines, constipation rheumatism, diabetes, dysentery, fevers, kidney ailments, cardiovascular conditions, cancers, leukaemia, and as a skin care elixir.

-----------------------------------------------

From the Internet: www.hybridpoplars.com/gynura.htm

Gynuras attract aphids and you should always be aware of that. There are many solutions to get rid of aphids, the best I have found is having praying mantis (I get the sacks on ebay at $3 each). As long as you have praying mantis in the area where the bushes are, you will not have aphids.

I have found what I believe to be the best solution for the aphid problem. It is a dust which has been used for some time to control fleas and small insects. I am talking about diatomaceous earth. They have had such success with it that it is now refined for human consumption and if you take a tablespoon a day (it does not taste bad, just add it to a drink ) it will keep your system as clean as a whistle.

You can find this powder all over the Internet and it is not inexpensive, about a dollar per pound. I just dusted my gynuras very lightly yesterday, when I went to see them today, I saw that all the aphids are still there but they are all dead. How long will this treatment last? I don't know. After a day or so, mist them to remove the dust. If not removed, it will dehydrate the plants. This stuff is also good for snails.
