Weathered brachiopod in limestone in the Ordovician of Kentucky, USA.
This fossil (consistent with a Platystrophia orthid brachiopod) is eroded from Upper Ordovician fossiliferous limestones of the Ashlock Formation, which is correlative with the famous Cincinnatian outcrop belt in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. I've seen two or three asserted members identified for this area, so I'm not sure about the sub-formation level stratigraphy at this site. The fossils are similar to what's seen in the Maysvillian and/or Richmondian Stages of the type Cincinnatian. Observed fossils in this area included silicified stromatoporoids, brachiopods (including Platystrophia ponderosa - also known as Vinlandostrophia ponderosa - and Hebertella), ramose bryozoans, encrusting sheet bryozoans, bivalves, gastropods, nautiloid cephalopods, and corals. The rocks at this cut are fine-grained limestones and fossiliferous limestones with interbedded greenish-gray shales.

World’s Best Surfers Ignite Aproador to Complete Round 1 of Billabong Rio Pro
APROADOR, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Tuesday, May 17, 2011) – After a week of lay-days, the world’s best surfers tore into consistently changing conditions at the lefthand pointbreak of Aproador to complete Round 1 of the Billabong Rio Pro.
Stop No. 3 of 11 on the ASP World Title Series, the opening day of men’s competition saw ASP Dream Tour veterans earn the day’s top scores while defending event winner Jadson Andre (BRA), 21, made an impressive entrance in the Billabong Rio Pro’s opening round.
Kelly Slater (USA), 39, reigning 10-time ASP World Champion, got off to a strong start to open his Billabong Rio Pro campaign. Slater unleashed two furious tail-drifting backhand turns to notch the day’s highest single-wave score of a 9.00 (out of 10) midway through his bout to overtake ASP World Tour rookie Julian Wilson (AUS), 22, and event wildcard Peterson Crisanto (BRA), 18, after nearly missing the start of his heat.
“That 9 felt good,” Slater said. “I went down to grab my jersey and there was some confusion. By the time I got out, the heat had already started and Julian got that first one. It wasn’t a good start. I knew there were going to be some good ones and I just had to be patient. That one good wave actually let me bottom turn and hit the lip, most of the waves were soft and had a lot of horizontals.”
Slater, who finished runner-up at the Billabong Pro last year, was also quick to admit that several goofy-footers will be tough to beat at the lefthander of Aproador and noted that the natural-footers will need to be especially selective in their wave choice at the Billabong Rio Pro.
“A little left like this is going to play well for goofy footers,” Slater said. “Owen (Wright) and Jadson (Andre) are probably frothing on it and licking their chops ready to go. We (natural footers) have been on our frontside at Snapper and Bells and now it’s their turn. We’ve just got to try and be smart. Mick (Fanning) looked good and there are waves out there to do it, you’ve just got to be smart.”
Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, opened his Billabong Rio Pro campaign with a sharp backhand attack by belting two Arpoador lefthanders to the tune of a 16.83 (out of 20) on his first two waves to earn the highest heat-total of the day. The Australian veteran notched his Round 1 heat win over dangerous Brazilian rookie Alejo Muniz (BRA), 21, and event wildcard Ricardo Santos (BRA), 20.
“It was kind of scary for a second there, right when they decided to start the competition the wind started howling, but then it cleaned up heaps,” Burrow said. “I got two fun ones at the start so I’m happy.”
Jadson Andre, defending event winner, reveled in Aproador’s lefthanders with a combination of aggressive carves and snaps to take a convincing Round 1 heat victory with the support of the Brazilian crowd behind him.
“I’m so happy to be here competing in Brazil and I love Aproador, I feel like a local,” Andre said. “I’ve competed here several times before and have friends here. I know everyone says I should feel pressure as defending champion, but I’m not worried about it. I’m just thinking about the next heat. That’s what I did last year.”
Mick Fanning (AUS), 29, two-time ASP World Champion, slowly built momentum in his opening Billabong Rio Pro heat, eventually igniting two lefthanders by combining a series of seamless backhand turns to notch a 15.07 heat total to advance directly through to Round 3.
“It was tricky trying to find the right one out there, but I watched the heat before and noticed that guys that were doing turns back-to-back were getting scores, so I tried to concentrate on that,” Fanning said. “They weren’t the biggest waves, but they just allowed three turns straight away.”
The Australian talent also expressed the importance of advancing directly through to Round 3 with Brazil’s ever-changing conditions.
“It’s really good to skip as many rounds as possible, especially here in Brazil where it can be really unpredictable,” Fanning said. “I’m stoked to get through Round 1 and I’ll go back and assess what’s going on and hopefully keep going.”
Billabong Rio Pro event organizers will reconvene at Aproador at 7am local time tomorrow morning for a possible Round 2 start.

Saying that Delaware has made consistent progress in reducing its infant mortality rate, Governor Carney told the Delaware Maternal and Child Health Summit on April 17 that the goal is that “every child in Delaware is born healthy” and has the opportunity to be successful in his or her life.
“I’m optimistic that we can address all of these challenges,” the Governor said in figuring out new and innovative ways to bring down the state’s infant mortality rate from its current 7.5 deaths per 1,000 live births to match or fall below the national average rate of 5.9. Delaware’s infant mortality rate has declined from a high of 9.3 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2005. The Delaware Healthy Mothers and Infants Consortium was created in 2005 to address Delaware’s high rate of infant deaths.
“The fact that some segments in our state already have birth outcomes that are better than the national average is a clear indication that we can get there together,” DHSS Secretary Dr. Kara Odom Walker said of the state’s white infant mortality rate that is at 5.1 deaths per 1,000 live births. The black infant mortality rate in Delaware is 12.5. “For the families who experience this terrible nightmare, we can do better,” Secretary Walker said. “That’s what gets me up every day, knowing we can do better.”
Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, a registered nurse, also applauded the progress made to reduce infant mortality in the state, but said the measure is a public health indicator of a state’s overall health.
Attorney General Matt Denn said the increasing number of substance-exposed infants in the state indicates that “the opioid crisis is a healthy infants crisis as well.”
Kenn Harris of New Haven Healthy Start, one of the summit’s keynote speakers, has devoted his career to child and maternal health after he and his wife lost their second son as a baby. “There is no single fix for this issue of infant mortality … It takes innovation,” he said in encouraging the more than 300 attendees at the Chase Center to listen to and engage their communities. “We have to work on our listening.”

The nights have been consistently below zero for the last week or so, and at church this morning I found this single pane glass window with the most unbelievable feather frost I've ever seen.
This is just one of the many jaw-dropping pictures I took of the frost patterns. I'm dumbstruck at the intricate beauty of these natural formations. I can't imagine how they are formed, and I can even scarce believe my eyes themselves as I look at these pictures!

La entrega fue realizada por la Agencia de Los Estados Unidos Para el Desarrollo Internacional (USAID) a través de su representante Sara Werth, todo este equipo fue recibido por la Viceministra de Apoyo Comunitario Dinora Yax.
El equipo entregado consiste en 12 computadoras de escritorio, 40 computadoras portátiles, 52 software, 40 impresoras laser, 41 cañoneras, 30 equipos de amplificación portátiles, 42 cámaras digitales.
Estas acciones es parte de un proceso integral de prevención que promueve junto al Ministerio de Gobernación, a través de la Viceministra de Apoyo Comunitario, la Secretaria Técnica del Consejo Nacional de Seguridad, la Dirección General de la Policía Nacional Civil y la Comisión Para la Reforma Policial.
Este equipo será distribuido a las 27 comisarías que hay en el territorio nacional con el fin de facilitar el trabajo a los agentes en relación a prevención del delito.

VALVERDE DE LOS ARROYOS = OCTAVA DEL CORPUS 2012

Lleva la fama Valverde de los Arroyos, además de por los paisajes y sus aspecto serrano peculiar, por las conocidas fiestas de la Octava del Corpus. Se celebran éstas el domingo siguiente a la octava de la festividad del Señor, esto es, diez días justos después, siempre en domingo.
Esta es la fiesta que centra todo el folclore, riquísimo y vario, muy peculiar, que posee este enclave de nuestra sierra. A esta fiesta le dan vida el grupo de danzantes con su botarga. Son ocho en total, y portan una vestimenta muy peculiar, consistente en camisa y pantalón blanco, cuyos bordes se adornan con puntillas y bordados; en el cuello se anudan un largo y coloreado pañuelo de seda; el pantalón se cubre con una falda que llega hasta las rodillas (sayolín) de color rojo con lunares blancos estampados. En la cintura se coloca un gran pañuelo negro sobre el que aparecen bordados, con vivos colores, temas vegetales. El pecho y espalda se cruzan con una ancha banda de seda que se anuda a la altura de la cadera izquierda. Los brazos se anudan también con cintas rojas más estrechas, y en la espalda, pendientes de una cinta transversal, aparecen otras múltiples de pasamanería. Sobre los hombros hay flores. La cabeza se cubre con un enorme gorro, que se adorna con gran cantidad de flores de plástico, presentando en su parte frontal un espejillo redondo. Calzan sus pies con alpargatas anudadas con cinta negra. Les acompaña «el botarga» ataviado con un traje de pana en que alternan los colores marrón, amarillo, rojo y verde. Sobre su espalda, las iniciales A. M., del sastre que lo confeccionó a principios del siglo XX. En la cabeza una gorra compuesta de varios trozos de tela dispuestos radialmente, rematados en una borla roja. Finalmente, forma también parte del grupo el «gaitero». Ataviado con traje de fiesta, de chaqueta y pantalón oscuro, corbata discreta y camisa blanca, sin tocar, cruzando el pecho gruesa correa de la que pende el tambor, y sujetando en su mano derecha el palillo, y en la izquierda la flauta o «gaita», pieza metálica de agujeros hecha con el cañón de una antiquísima escopeta.
La fiesta comienza con una misa, a la que asisten los danzantes, sentados en el presbiterio, y tocados con sus gorros ante el Sacramento que porta el sacerdote, bajo palio, escoltado de los danzantes, el botarga y el resto de los hermanos de la cofradía. En la plaza Mayor se expone el Sacramento sobre una mesa y casa ataviados con grandes colchas de colores, formando el «monumento». Luego suben hasta la era, un alto prado sobre el pueblo, rodeado de las altas montañas antes citadas, y allí danzan ante el Sacramento varias veces, formando el baile de «la Cruz», que se ejecuta al son del tambor, la flauta y las castañuelas que hacen sonar los propios danzantes. Luego se baja a la plaza, y allí se ejecutan otros bailes rituales: «el Verde», «el Cordón», «los Molinos» y «la Perucha», de paloteo y cintas, de gran belleza plástica, acompañadas del monótono y peculiar sonido del músico. Entre una y otra danza se realiza la «Almoneda» de las roscas, que van colocadas en una especie de árbol gigante.
A Valverde de los Arroyos llegaría en los primeros años del XVII. Ya entonces se tenía noticia de los danzantes, aunque sus danzas eran paganas. Fue en 1606 cuando el papa concedía la bula que les permitía bailar cubiertos ante el Santísimo. Así, éstos se incorporaron a la celebración de la Octava del Corpus como manifestación popular de la fiesta.
En esta fiesta valverdeña de la Octava del Corpus, se integraban una serie de representaciones teatrales que corren a cargo de los vecinos del pueblo y cofrades del Santísimo. Se trataba de sencillos «autos sacramentales» o piezas costumbristas en las que se mezclaba un fondo de teología con los afanes diarios del pueblo. Algunas de estas piezas, como el «Papel del Género Humano», «Sainete de Cucharón», «Auto Sacramental de San Miguel» y «La Infancia de Jesús», se han conservado entre los pobladores de Valverde, representándose algunas de ellas, con motivo de la fiesta.

El Open Txoko Surf Club Schola
El Open Txoko Surf Club Schola es una competición que tiene lugar anualmente entre los alumnos en activo del Club. Esa es la única condición. No hay categorías. El material con el que se compite es material de escuela, a excepción de los neoprenos o escarpines que pueden ser de los participantes.
