My mothers grandmothers old pendant.
My grandmother Ellen would marry my grandfather AL Collins and together with their remarkable energy and intelligence would continue both their families traditions of breeding high quality sheep and developed a breed of merino sheep that was extremely tough and adaptable and this breed would would be named in my grandfather's families honor and exported around the world including South America, South Africa, South America, China, Russia and the USA and you can still see their breeding in to days modern merino sheep when I see photos of some sheep from these parts of the world.
At the time people in many other merino studs thought it was all good marketing and tradition.
Today we can look at the density of the woolen follicles in the skin and measure the consistency of the wools micron over the body. We can now see that it was a well bred breed of sheep that can now be proven with science to be a special breed of merino.
Today with micron and follicle density measurements available plus many other traits to select for we can use computers to help breed your sheep.
It is not as hard to do technically now as we understand the genetics involved so in theory any country science program or committed individual should be able to breed a very good meat and wool sheep.
It was believed my grandfather and his stud masters new all the 14000 stud ewes in their breeding program as individuals.
My grandmother was incredible at entertaining guests that would visit from around Australia and the world and was renowned for her hospitality.
I find it humbling to see the tough and simple luxuries our forebears treasured.
My mother fondly remembers her grandmother wearing this simple jewelry as a little girl when visiting her grandmother as a young girl in rural South Australia.

For a photographer, the forge is full of rich pickings. Lots of direct light and plenty of deep blacks and highlights...
One of the last few steps in finishing a hand-forged blade (or any blade really) is laying down the final bevel ready for the sharpening stones.
Techniques vary immensely and this is but one method. In Pete's shop we run a linisher/polisher fitted with a very fine belt in reverse allowing a little more control over the angle of the bevel. A smooth, firm, consistent, arcing, stroke across the belt is required. First one side of the blade and then the other. Fine control is necessary as is consistency of pressure on the the belt. It's hypnotic - concentration is essential!
As more material is removed and the edge moves into the realm of sharp, a thin feather of metal will form on the upside of the edge.
This is known as a 'wire edge.' When an even wire forms along the full length of the edge and which eventually 'fluffs' off, it's getting close to pretty sharp. From here it's on to the water stones.

I'm sure they don't chose just any mud, but something of the right consistency for the construction.

Three Moments from This Morning – Morning Labors of Nature: From Puddle to Nest — In Mud, Wings, and Stillness -
Each morning brings surprises we cannot foresee — and as your fellow writer, I find joy in translating those surprises into words.
Among the many swallow species that migrate thousands of miles from Africa each year, the Red-rumped Swallowparticularly fascinates me. Their nest-building technique — using clay and mud before the breeding season — always reminds me of Irish bricklayers. Both male and female birds pick up small lumps of sand, including beach sand, shaping it with their beaks and moistening it to a cement-like consistency before flying swiftly back to the nest site. They are as industrious as bees.
This morning, after I washed the stone-paved area of our garden, a Red-rumped Swallow couple was drawn to the puddles. I watched as one of them — I believe the female — gently landed, gathered a small mud ball at the tip of her beak, and flew back to continue building the nest, only to return moments later. It reminded me once again: Wetlands are essential not only for drinking water but also for providing critical materials for nest construction, especially for migratory birds.
I am sure some of you on Flickr have witnessed similar behavior. I hope when you look closely at the first photo and see the tiny lump of mud at her beak, you’ll imagine the dedication behind this remarkable nest-building process.
In the second photo, you’ll see a Nuthatch in its typical posture, resting under the soft shade of fig leaves — still and alert.

Red-rumped Swallow in Turkey – A Brief Field Note
The Red-rumped Swallow (Cecropis daurica) is a summer visitor to Turkey, arriving in early spring from Africa and departing again by late August or September. A graceful and agile flyer, it is easily recognized by its reddish rump, creamy underparts, and elongated outer tail feathers.
Distribution in Turkey:
It breeds extensively along the Aegean, Mediterranean, and Southeastern Anatolian regions.
Common in coastal villages, lowland farmland, and lightly wooded areas.
The northern Aegean coast, especially places like Ayvalık, Altınoluk, and Kaz Mountains, serve both as migration corridors and breeding zones.
Scattered but less common sightings occur inland and in the Black Sea region.
Habitat Preferences:
They nest in semi-natural or human-influenced environments — cliffs, bridges, walls, or under eaves of quiet rural structures.
Frequently seen perched on fig, pine, and olive trees.
They build mud cup nests, often reused or added to each year.
Breeding & Behavior:
Breeding pairs arrive by late March to April.
Chicks usually hatch around late May or June, depending on conditions.
They feed on aerial insects, captured in flight — contributing to natural pest control.
Conservation Notes:
Urbanization and habitat loss — especially along the coast and migration stopovers — threaten traditional nesting grounds.
Fig trees and century-old olive groves serve not just as part of agricultural heritage, but as vital shelter and feeding perches for swallows and other migratory birds.

Snapseed, Filterstorm, Stackables
It all began on a sunny day with a blue sea and a very blue sky. I was along the Basque coast (in the south-west of France) where the light is particularly beautiful.
First, while my photos still have a square format, it was important to pass on this feeling of immensity with a movie format.
And then I wanted to render a feeling of warmth, going to work with Snapseed on the brightness and saturation, going to color more ocher, keeping blue just on the sea and the sky on the horizon.
And so, always with Snapseed, I used the focus effect on the man in the foreground, leaving the woman and her dog in a slight blur.
And still Snapseed with Vintage, to get a very pale sun effect in the center.
The colors were a little pale, I used the Amatorka effect in Filterstorm to restore just a little consistency to my characters.
And finally Stackables, but I can not remember the filter applied, maybe Pastel Clouds...
In summary, from a very colored image, a noisy and bubbling ocean, my idea was to make it a place a little unreal, very hot, and silent.

This is an old shot from 2011 that I've never shared on Flickr.
For those of you not familiar with Cal Ripfin (aka Shredder), He was probably the most recognized and "famous" male great white sharks at Guadalupe for years.
First identified at the island in 2001, he was consistently spotted every season through 2011. His uniquely injured dorsal fin made him easy to identify, but it was his personality that made him a favorite with divers at the island over the years.
He has been missing now for four years and is believed by many to have passed away, due to the consistency with which he visited the island prior to his disappearance. His presence at the island is sorely missed, and it really isn't the same place or experience without him there.
I'm grateful for the numerous encounters that I had with Cal and am thankful that I have so many pictures of him to remember him by.

We're still ambling around the Wellington waterfront, and although there's a clear blue sky, a Southerly breeze made the morning bitterly cold!
Oriental Bay is situated against the northern slopes of Mount Victoria (which is to the right of the photo), and is just 1.5 kilometres from Wellington's city centre.
In 2002, 22,000 tonnes of sand from the northern coastal area of the South Island was barged to Oriental Bay. However, the sand never actually came from a beach. Rather it came from a road straitening project near Nelson, and was then ground down to the right consistency! The beach thus has a rather coarse feel to it.
However, in spite of its coarseness, Oriental Bay is hugely popular during the Summer months with picnickers, swimmers and sunbathers, and although Swimmers are few and far between right now (Wellington is of course in the grip of a cold, bleak Winter), the beach is still popular with lunchtime strollers, and / or with people walking their dogs "leash-free"!
And the band rotunda (built in 1918) in the middle distance? It's now a popular restaurant!

Could one ever tire of seeing these beautiful Flemish landscapes? The tree-lined canals always delight my eye. The light changes and the trees follow the cycle of the seasons but there is always a comforting consistency in the graphic lines and seemingly infinite perspective.
I think the vapour trails of the jets in the sky added to the feeling of endlessness, as I stood there contemplating this view.
The trees run the length of the Leopoldsvaart-Oost canal.

Hi guys! So as of yesterday, I officially finished my three week teaching practicum. I absolutely loved it + am returning in Oct/November for a six week internship teaching my same wonderful Year 2 class. For now, I've got one last assignment to complete before I am on holidays until August. I cannot wait to create some more conceptual photographs and push myself even further as an artist throughout my Winter break.
Currently, I am working on updating my blog because I've been quite terrible with the whole consistency thing, so keep an eye out for some new blog posts. I hope you're all well + are following me on all of my social media below because I seem to be updating my audience on there more than I am on here!
I've been working on this piece for a few months, tweaking little things here and there. This was actually the first shoot where I was able to use Alex's dress and ah, it just looks stunning in photographs and I have to say, is suuupper comfortable to wear. I'll definitely be using it a lot in my future photographs :)
The manufacture of gunpowder first involved charcoal and sulphur being ground to a fine consistency in a Safe House. The resulting mixture was taken to the Mixing House where saltpetre was added. Mixed together these ingredients produced what was known as a "green charge". This dangerous mixture was then taken to one of seven pairs of Incorporating Mills where millstones, powered by an overshot waterwheel between each pair of mills, ground and mixed the green charge to a fine powder ready for further processing elsewhere in the works.
