I found this tussock moth caterpillar dangling from an invisible thread, swinging in the wind, curling and contorting. I had to use manual focus because it was too small in the frame for the camera’s sensors to find it with any consistency. Like photographing flying, diving puffins from a small rocking boat, I giggled as I lost and found the caterpillar passing by my lens, quickly focusing and following. There were a lot of images that went into the trash. And then there was this gem. Those feet are like little grabby booties!
Hector the Convector is a cumulonimbus thundercloud that forms regularly nearly every afternoon on the Tiwi Islands (90 km NNW of Darwin) in the Northern Territory of Australia, from approximately September to May each year.
Hector is known as one of the world's most consistently large thunderstorms, reaching heights of approximately 20 kilometres (66,000 ft).
Named by US and Australian airforce pilots during the Second World War, (who were attempting to defend Darwin against Japanese bombing) the recurring position of the thunderstorm made it a navigational beacon for pilots and mariners in the region.
Hector is caused primarily by a collision of several sea breeze boundaries across the Tiwi Islands and is known for its consistency and intensity. Lightning rates and updraft speeds are notable aspects of this thunderstorm and during the 1990s National Geographic magazine published a comprehensive study of the storm with pictures of damaged trees and details of updraft speeds and references to tornadic events.
Since the late-1980s the thunderstorm has been the subject of many meteorological studies, many centred on Hector itself, but also utilising the consistency of the storm cell to study other aspects of thunderstorms and lightning.

I love the shape and consistency of these “square” like flowers. I believe this is a dogwood tree but not certain. They always produce abundant white blossoms in late Spring, which means this species stands out at a time when most of nature’s colors are transitioning to shades of green.

One of the most iconic (and very tasty) dishes of the southern United States is shrimp and grits. A classic of Southern cuisine, the dish is found on menus at Michelin-starred restaurants and local holes in the wall alike throughout the Southern United States.
Nathalie Dupree, a noted Southern food writer and cooking show host, devoted her book Nathalie Dupree's Shrimp and Grits to some 60 variations of this one dish. Its opening line reads, "Shrimp and grits, one of the South's beloved foods, leaves a lingering taste and a folkloric mystique that borders on the mystical."
For the uninitiated, grits are a porridge that can vary in consistency and is made from boiled cornmeal.
This particular version was my lunch at Natty Greene’s Brewery In Greensboro, North Carolina. Highly recommended. [Edit: a previous version incorrectly stated that this photo was taken at Ceviche’s in Wilmington, NC, an excellent restaurant that also serves wonderful shrimp and grits, but not where this photo was taken].

One more with the dense fog in this nice beech wood from mid of September. Wow...2021 was a challenging year; one of the hardest of my life. In the midst of a continuing pandemic, my brother was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in March. After a seven month deterioration of his health, he died on a Sunday in October...just one day before his 54th birthday. I remain heartbroken over his passing. He wanted to die at home, and I found myself care-taking for him and my aging parents; a role I was not prepared for but I took on nonetheless. Through this, I discovered a deeper sense of love for my family and a closeness I did not have before. The relationship with my parents has changed now that I am an only child. I always imagined that I would get old with my brother and we would take care of each other in our old age, but this was not meant to be. His death served as a reminder not to take life for granted. I say "I love you" more often now.
Speaking of love...another big change in my life has been a move into my partner's house. It's not just a house, but a home and a new life in a small town in Colorado with a unique culture all it's own. Just the kind of place I've always wanted to live in and I've been greeted with open arms by everyone I meet. In addition to the deepening love I have with my partner, I have two new people in my life now...her children. Two teenagers that have proven to be a delightful bonus to my living situation. Every day is filled with richness and brevity. I feel truly blessed.
Throughout the changes of my life this year, I also had the faithfulness and consistency of my core long-term friendships and son that recently turned 21. They combine to make me feel so very grateful for this wonderfully twisted, tragically painful, and divinely beautiful life.
To add to an already difficult year, we just experienced the horror and tragedy of a natural disaster very close to where we live. Many hundreds of homes lost in one afternoon. Hurricane force winds fueled an unstoppable wall of flames that spread like fingers across the landscape, consuming everything in it's path. Thankfully, we have received a snow storm to help the firefighters extinguish the last remaining embers. Unfortunately, the snow arrived just one day too late for the thousands of home & business owners effected by the blaze. I'll be donating to the Red Cross.
In regards to my creative output and photography this year…it has been a challenge to keep up, honestly. I wasn't as consistent as I was in years past, but I never gave up. Knowing that despite the lack of motivation, I'd inevitably walk away deeply satisfied with the time spent to create something. I think I gave up on the "wow" factor I had chased in the past. I just keep doing do what I do.
I have no doubt that 2022 will have it's share of challenges. I send positivity to all. Please be well, be kind, and take care.

Continuing the story. Did everything go wrong that day? The balloon shown in the previous photos has failed.
When, like other viewers, I moved away from the take-off site, I saw numerous balloons in the sky. The starts from the remaining places were successful. The sight of numerous balloons in the sky compensated for the earlier disappointment a little.
The photo shows one of the many balloons flying over the city.
In this approach, I also liked the consistency of colors - a yellow balloon for warm air, a yellow t-shirt of a random passer-by and all this decorated with warm yellow light of the late afternoon.
I end this photo with a series of balloons.
Poi is a Hawaiian word for the primary Polynesian staple food made from the corm of the taro plant (known in Hawaiian as kalo). Poi is produced by mashing the cooked corm (baked or steamed) to a highly viscous fluid. Water is added during mashing and again just before eating, to achieve a desired consistency, which can range from liquid to dough-like (poi can be known as two-finger or three-finger, alluding to how many fingers you would have to use to eat it, depending on its consistency)...
The bowl of poi was considered such an important and sacred part of daily Hawaiian life that whenever a bowl of poi was uncovered at the family dinner table, it was believed that the spirit of Hāloa, the ancestor of the Hawaiian people, was present. This is because Hawaiians believed that the taro plant, or kalo, was the original ancestor of the Hawaiian people. (Wikipedia)

Today at one of the Goodwill stores on our thrift route, we found a nice little KidKraft dollhouse, with the furniture, a doll family and some extras.

I was out on a photoshoot this past weekend and stumbled on this old camera. It’s a 1955 Soviet FED2. The cameras are a direct copy of the Leica II. Leica cameras had become incredibly popular in the Soviet Union due in large part to the work of famed Russian photographer Alexander Mikhailovich Rodchenko (1891-1956). It became difficult if not impossible for USSR to import the incredible Leica’s so a decision was made to copy Leica and make their own Soviet version of the camera. Western copyright laws were not recognized by the USSR so work was undertaken to attempt to duplicate the design. The FED, which was named after Felix Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky the founder of the Soviet Secret Police - later known as the KGB, was released in 1934 and models continued to be released until production ceased in 1996. The FED may closely resemble a Leica but the quality could not be more different! Consistency in manufacturing varied widely from one camera to the next. In fact the only thing consistent about the cameras is the lack of consistency. Even the type of screws used can vary from one camera to another as it depended on what was available at the time. This FED2 is largely functional but does have some issues I am in the process of repairing. I hope to have it back to shooting film again in a few weeks.

More than dull, grey and overcast this morning; not foggy but definitely misty. Having said that weather conditions great for reflections. Water levels are a little lower it not having rained significantly for some days. Even the consistency of the mud is changing, no longer wet and sloppy. The beginning of March and the start of meteorological spring so hopefully conditions will improve further although forecast for next week not great.
A marshmallow is a sugar based confection that, in its modern form, typically consists of sugar, water and gelatin whipped to a spongy consistency, molded into small cylindrical pieces, and coated with corn starch. Marshmallow probably came first into being as a medicinal substance, since the mucilaginous extracts come from the root of the marshmallow plant, Althaea officinalis, which were used as a remedy for sore throats. Concoctions of other parts of the marshmallow plant had medical purposes as well. The root has been used since Egyptian antiquity in a honey-sweetened confection useful in the treatment of sore throat. The later French version of the recipe, called pâte de guimauve (or "guimauve" for short), included an egg white meringue and was often flavored with rose water.
When I see teal colors, I always imagine a totally tropical ocean, with clear waters that mirrors the blue sky and appears so 'tealy'. It also has a teasing hint of green sometimes so I think of a big open field of just green grass. That revitalizing and refreshing feeling that the color emits is unlike any other.
Similarly, when I think of you, that is how I feel. The truth of your friendship, the reality of your care and most of all, your clarity. You are my true example of consistency, faithfulness and loyalty all in one.

Apparently I wasn't paying much attention to consistency when I snipped the tulips this week; I managed to level the colours but not the bouquet.
Oh well; a little layering never hurt anyone, (well unless you count that one haircut years ago....) at least the light is nice.

Brian loves baking and has a large collection of recipes. But he is always careful when measuring honey as he knows it could seriously affect his osmotic balance.
Honey is a viscous liquid containing the monosaccharides fructose and glucose. My jar of honey labelled as 'clear honey' originally had a runny consistency - but over time the glucose present had precipitated forming solid crystals. Warming the honey helped these crystals to dissolve so the honey became more liquid again. The temperature of the honey greatly affected its viscosity, so producing this image required much trial and error to get the honey to form nice drips, but not too fast! Only after I had my technique working did I bring Brian into the picture. A shutter speed fast enough to photograph Brian wasn't fast enough to avoid movement in the drip, but I decided I preferred this to a more stationary gloopy drip.
For Macro Mondays theme 'Liquid'. The bowl of the measuring spoon was 2.7 cm long, so the image spans about 6.9 cm.
No snails were harmed in the making of this photograph.

The sugar apple is indigenous to tropical America.
The aggregate fruit is heart-shaped, round, ovate, or conical, from 2 to 5 inches (5.1-12.7 cm) in diameter and weighs from 4 to 24 oz (113-682 g). The fruit is composed of loosely cohering segments, which project as rounded protuberances and are easily separated when the fruit is ripe. The pulp of green and purplish-red sugar apples is white or creamy white, with a custard-like consistency and sweet, pleasant flavor. There are numerous, size of small kidney beans dark seeds embedded in the pulp.

Earthworms, beetles, a small mouse perhaps made these tracks. I also found a large centipede in the area but that creature made a larger track which isn't shown on this section. Not sure why some tracks are smooth and others are not but it may have to do with the changing consistency of the mud as it dried out.

Ingredients:
1 lb (450g) onions, weight is for onions when peeled and finely chopped
2 lbs (900g) "windfall" apples, weight is for apples when peeled, cored and roughly chopped
4 ounces (100g) sultanas
1 ounce (25g) fresh ginger, peeled and grated
1 teaspoon dried ginger powder
2 teaspoons mixed spice
1 lb (450g) soft brown sugar
1/2 pint (300ml) malt vinegar
1/2 pint (300ml) cider apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
Directions:
Place all the prepared onions and apples into a large preserving pan and add the remaining ingredients.
Bring slowly to the boil and then lower the heat so that chutney cooks at a rolling boil.
Stir the chutney regularly and make sure it does not “catch” and burn on the base of the preserving pan.
Keep on cooking until the chutney is the consistency of a thick jam and all the liquids have dissolved.
(A trick to check if it is cooked is to draw your wooden spoon across the chutney, if the space that is left fills up with liquid, the chutney is not ready yet).
Spoon the hot chutney into hot and sterile jars and seal immediately.
Makes about 4 lbs chutney.
Store in a dark and cool place and leave to mature for at least 2 weeks.
Will keep in ideal storage conditions for up to 2 years+.
