Saturday August 31, is "LET IT FLOW!"

For that challenge, I would like you to take a picture of 'a fluid' and more specifically 'a liquid'.

DEFINITIONS:

Fluid: a substance that flows and is not solid (liquid, gas, plasma).

Liquid: a substance that flows freely but is of constant volume, having a consistency like that of water or oil.

I took Hermes out in the garden. He does not mind as long as there is no rain (he is afraid of losing his consistency - the fear of a plaster cast man).

My 365 project in 2026. Camera Sony

A daily photography project for one year.

One image per day, capturing both ordinary and meaningful moments.

The photos don’t have to be taken on the same day, but must be taken within the last 7 days.

Once per month, an older archive photo is allowed.

This project is about consistency, observation, and staying connected to photography.

This is quite a strange fungus that grows on old oak trees. The English common name refers to its consistency and colour once cut. In Poland it is known as the oak tongue ( 'langue de bœuf' in France), which seems fitting for this young specimen, down to the taste buds. Although edible, in Poland it is a protected species, so can't be collected.

Recette:

A 4 cm thick bone-in strip loin steak.

Coarse sea salt

Whole peppercorns - a mixture adds depth and visual appeal

Unsalted butter

4 crushed garlic cloves

Fresh thyme

Large shallot

Beef demiglace

Heavy cream

Worcestershire sauce

Dijon mustard

Whole green peppercorns in brine

Generously season both sides of the meat with coarse sea salt and refrigerate uncovered on a rack for 6 to 24 hours.

Remove the steak from refrigeration and set at room temperature for 1 hour.

Crush an equal parts mixture of black, white, and pink peppercorns with a meat mallet or mortar and pestle. Dry off the steak with kitchen paper and liberally coat only one side with the crushed pepper.

Preheat an oven to 500ºF

Heat a skillet over medium high heat until the pan temperature reaches 450ºF. Add a drizzle of high smoke point oil to the pan (Avocado, Grapeseed, Canola, Ghee). Lay the steak in the pan with the pepper side up and press down firmly to ensure good surface contact. Sear the meat without disturbing for 3 minutes.

Decrease the flame to Medium and carefully turn the steak so as not to disturb the pepper coating much (use tongs to grasp the meat by the sides).

Add 50 gm butter to the pan along with 4 crushed garlic cloves and several sprigs of fresh thyme. Sear the pepper side for 2 minutes continuously basting with the butter. Flame off.

Transfer the steak to a roasting pan and place in the hot oven for about 4 minutes checking the internal temperature with an instant read thermometer and removing from heat when the temp reaches 125ºF (for final rested temp: medium rare). Rest the steak under a small foil tent for 5 minutes while making the sauce.

The sauce!:

Warm the same skillet over medium heat removing the spent garlic and thyme. Add one large finely minced shallot. Sauté the shallot until softened, about two minutes. Flame off, add about 100 ml of Cognac to the pan, scraping up the fond left from searing the steak. Re-ignite the burner and carefully flambé. Once the flame had died, add 80 gm of beef demiglace and mix in well. Add 200 ml heavy cream, bring to the boil and reduce by 1/2 until the sauce is nappe consistency. Strain the sauce at this point if desired. Add green peppercorns to the sauce, amount depending on taste preference. Add 5 ml Worcestershire sauce and 5ml Dijon mustard; stir in well. Off heat, swirl in 10 gm cold butter. Immediately plate the sauce and lay the rested steak atop the sauce with extra poured on top if desired.

Even after 43 springtimes of ownership, I'm still a bit pleasantly surprised when the original engine in the Charger fires right up. There's something to say for consistency. :- )

Tribute to Cesco Dessanti

In a few days the anniversary of his death, which took place a year ago, the brilliant artist expressionist painter and poet Cesco Dessanti. I want to remember and pay tribute, as much as I possibly can, with seven photographs that help to understand this great artist, especially someone who has always lived with your back straight and enormous consistency often paying firsthand this very difficult existential and artistic journey.

My goodness this is hard to do. Two lessons learned (again). There is a real atmospheric effect / haze no matter how clear it might seem. And, second, it's really hard across a four stitch pano to get consistency on a camera sensor even though the sky is presumably consistently blue across the whole span. Dunn Peak, for scale, is 100 kilometers from Kamloops as the crow flies. And, four images stitched, with a 625mm (FF EQ) lens.

Italian chestnut honey has a liquid consistency, with a dark amber color with some reddish tones. Its flavor is slightly bitter, tannic: tasting it leaves the mouth dry with a bitter aftertaste.

The properties and benefits of chestnut honey: rich in minerals (potassium and iron) it is ideal for athletes, stimulates blood circulation and disinfects the urinary tract.

Pairing: it goes very well with fresh, matured and blue cheeses such as Tuscan Caciotta, Caciocavallo, Caprino and Parmesan.

Some kind of landscape photography I think. Captured in April 2023 at Troon South Beach, Scotland.

There are 3 vital things that someone with severe CPTSD needs in order to function and heal.

1/ Consistency, predictability and routine.

2/ A place of safety and comfort

3/ Patience and compassion

Without these my trauma response is activated. I can't help that, it is physiological.

These needs have not been fully met for the past 2 years or so. Is it any wonder my symptoms have worsened? Now I am blamed for not healing fast enough. 25 years of abuse and PTSD cannot be fixed with 1 year of therapy and just one year of healing afterwards, least of all when those needs are not fully met. I didn't stand a chance.

Last night a friend from the past messaged me at a critical time. They chatted with me online for some 2 hours or more. They actually made me cry, smile and even laugh. It saved The Samaritans a call and that friend may have saved my life. The timing was impeccable.

The biggest threat to me is not having the 3 vital things. Without those I will spiral into hell. There is no chance I can heal without them. I just don't know where I can get them now. I can't do this alone and I will need actual in-person physical help as well. At my worst I am unable to even cook a meal or even answer the door. At times I could not even leave the house into the garden.

At my best there are little nuggets of the old 'Leanne' there. I just can't find her by myself. I am too ill to do it all alone now.

For the friend that contacted me last night. I am in their debt.

I am trying to post to Flickr and enjoy your photography to maintain routine. It has helped to hold me together for a long time. I am struggling to comment on other people's work or find 'happy' photographs to share. I hope I can get back there though.

In the meantime. Thank you for your understanding and caring. However remote, it does help. It does help.

Testing corn syrup as a thickening agent for water. Finding I'm losing the consistency so drops become more random in shapes.

I baked Cheese and Ham Doggy Biscuits for Daisy Bear.

Doing this shoot was so funny, she watched me 'make and bake' these biscuits the whole time in the kitchen sitting right by my legs, somehow she seemed to know I was making something for her. Dogs still always amaze me at the things they know. I then had to photograph them.... the funny outtakes, I wish I could share them all, I may share one so as not fill your feed with dog images, it really was a case of 'Daisy! Sit!, Wait! Noooo! you can have one, just let me take a photo, Daisy! No! oh go on then' and in that split second she grabbed one and ran to her basket. This had gone on for a good 10 minutes getting her to sit. This was actually the cutest image and it was the first image, always the way, its the one where she came up to see what was going on as I was setting up the biscuits to photograph.

Cheese and Ham Dog Biscuit Recipe:

200g of plain or wholemeal flour

1 egg

Ham stock cube using only 115ml of water mixed with the cube or your dough will be too loose.

60g of grated cheese

Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl, add more water or flour until you get the correct consistency, use Doggy cutters and bake for approximately 15 minutes at 160 degrees in a fan oven

Have a great Monday ~ Debbie, KissThePixel2019

For some strange reason after I’d finished processing the image I posted yesterday I played with a couple of Lightroom artistic profiles, liked one look and posted it. Now this is something I never do and to be honest on reflection I think its far too dark for my usual style. Now I say usual style with tongue in cheek as I don’t think I have a consistency in my finished images, to my eye my style is all over the place and the finished image is as much about my mood at the moment than any other thought. I envy many photographers I admire for there personal style and consistency, where I can come across an example of their work and recognise it as theres before I see any accreditation. Todays woodland, again taken yesterday is my own processing and it fits my mood today, but I can’t see anything defining as typical for my work, can you? One thing I’ll add I’ve pondered over the crop, it was originally taken as a 4:3 but decided on a 5:7 to include more of the righthand side as I felt the oak leaning into that space gives more balance to the birch interloper.

Norio knows the value of consistency - that's why he loves his nest near the heater and can almost always be found there. When it's coldest outside, Naomi turns on the ceiling fan to push warm air down from the ceiling, which warms him up even more.

#2 shuatto. Cutting on the draw.

#3 to # 8 (3 cuts Down Up Down) Inazuma. Lightning cut

#9 Suihei Giri. Horizontal cut.

Total time for the 5 cuts is 2 seconds.

I am cutting rolled up rice straw Goza mat, (not easy to cut rolled up straw) that has been soaked in water to make it hard. One roll is about the same consistency and density as a human neck however it is winter and the temp was -1C so the rolls are also partly frozen making them even harder to cut.

Add to this that we were doing this on snow which makes it even more difficult. Actually 3 other men fell over while attempting their cuts.

On this day I was using a Japanese short sword (Wakizashi) which is used with one hand.

Listening to the news about a potential drought facing Alberta, I was reminded of driving home to Ontario last summer and seeing these large sprinkler systems alongside the highway. They appeared to rotate about a wellhead and I imagined used up great quantities of water. Digging a little further in Wikipedia, they are called center pivot irrigation systems and it was interesting to read how they maintain a straight line and adjust water flow for consistency across the radius of the circle.

The outside set of wheels sets the pace for the rotation. The inner sets of wheels are mounted at hubs between two segments and use angle sensors (microswitches) to detect when the bend at the joint exceeds a certain threshold. When the angle is too large, the wheels rotate to keep the segments aligned. Typical periods for a full rotation include three days; while other sources have the outer edge of the structure moving at 2 to 3 m (6.6 to 9.8 ft) per minute, which would equate to 14 to 21 hours for one full rotation of a 400-meter-radius (1⁄4 mi) system.

To achieve uniform application, center pivots require a variable emitter flow rate across the radius of the machine. Since the outer-most spans (or towers) travel farther in a given time period than the innermost spans, nozzle sizes are smallest at the inner spans and increase with distance from the pivot point. Aerial views show fields of circles created by tracings of quarter-mile or half-mile (400 or 800 m) radial irrigation pipes, which consume up to several thousands of gallons per minute.

If you're still with me after reading all that, the image itself was captured in harsh sunlight, which I tried to use to my advantage to better see the spray of water.

“Oh no here we go again. He’s finally lost it. Three shots already uploaded from that infernal ridge walk and yet he still manages to find another one to rattle on about!” is what you might be thinking. I’m starting to have the same thoughts myself. It doesn’t help that I’ve done so little photography since that adventure. Ok so there’s a van related wild camp caper on Dartmoor the week before last to report tales of yet to come, but I’m still to work those raw files into shape. The thing is, that afternoon on the high ground of the Brecon Beacons in South Wales brought one composition after another as the landscape gradually revealed new secrets with each phase of the trek. All of them taken with a lens that really deserves a bit more love in return for its efforts. This one brought the peaks of Fan y Big, Cribyn, Pen y Fan and Corn Du into a single frame, with an illuminated bonus foreground designed by the icy architects of this landscape to offset the four dark shrouds behind.

Like so many of us I started out with a modest assembly of tools for my induction into this world that we share. A midrange camera, a couple of reasonably price lenses sourced from your favourite auction site, a cheap tripod, an even cheaper bag and some very inexpensive filters that would be better suited as coasters for tea cups. And then I got carried away – a sorry tale of obsession, a descent of the senses so steep as to be matched only by the plummeting bank balance as a full frame camera and professional lenses were added to the bag, itself replaced by a new model of course. The cheap filters gave way to the same set that Nigel Danson swears by, and then of course a carbon fibre tripod was a must wasn’t it? Not long ago I looked at the collection, did some mental arithmetic, and decided it was best not to mention the final score to my better half, who has far more modest tastes. A new pair of knitting needles is as racy as she gets when it comes to freeing up budget for luxuries. When people take her to task on her innate sense of thrift, with metronomic consistency she replies with “how do you think I managed to retire in my fifties on what I was earning?” She has a point. You become so much wealthier by desiring less in life.

But in that bagful of precious things lies the lens that so often gets overlooked – only really brought into use at moments when lugging the others around is going to prove challenging. I think of it as my adventuring lens. After all I’d have needed a team of sherpas to roll my 100-400mm lens up the first slope of Fan y Big on a series of felled tree trunks if I’d wanted to take it with me. So for long arduous treks, the lightweight lens with the huge focal length gets its day in the sun; and the rain too for that matter. I used it a lot that day as you may already be aware from a surfeit of previous posts. When I uploaded the raw files from the hike onto my computer at home my first reaction was one of enormous disappointment – so many of them were fuzzy and grainy and I found myself heading down the familiarly dangerous route of eBay as I blamed the lens once more for its inadequacies, while stubbornly ignoring my own shortcomings. Misplaced vainglory is such an unattractive web in which to entangle oneself.

Eventually, after much soul searching and further experimenting at 300mm on the tripod in my living room I concluded that the maligned lens was entirely free of blame – it was me who was at fault. I resolved to learn to use it properly and stop poring over alternatives on the internet each time I fail. In fact it went to Dartmoor with me so you’ll be able to judge for yourself which one of us has performance issues to come to terms with in due course. I think we both know already it’s me and not the lens.

I’m sitting at my laptop in the aforementioned van, where the strains of the annual music festival that take place on the estate across the road from us are drifting across the trees towards me on the gentlest of summer evening breaths. It might be Razorlight; it might be Goldie Looking Chain I can hear, but this year the neighbours don’t appear to have been invited to the party in atonement for the interruption to our weekend peace so I’ve really no idea. I’ve moved on from indignation to indifference now. We didn’t really want to go anyway. At least it’s nearly over and it’s Bank Holiday Monday tomorrow with its stay of execution from the real world for one more day.

This might be the last image I post from that ridge walk, but the trouble is there’s at least one more of them jumping up and down in the shadows waving its arms about if I can drag another tale out of the adventure. For now I’ll work harder at familiarising myself with that lens.

Making fufu.

Fufu is an African dish made from tubers, such as cassava or yams, and/or bananas, which yield a semi-solid, sticky paste, similar to polenta, served as an accompaniment to soups, sauces, and stews.

It is an essential staple food in West Africa, particularly popular in Ghana, and is prepared by boiling and mashing the ingredients until they reach a smooth, sticky consistency.

Polaroid SX70. Polaroid ATZ.

I wasn't sure about ATZ at first.... I bought 5 packs when it first came out, shot 3 of them, and couldn't find a use for the other two.... until I started thinking about Roid Week, and how I wanted to do something different this time. So I picked up one of those packs, and couldn't believe the colours that came out of it. I've since shot a financially-crippling amount of it; it's a bit hit-and-miss, there's not as much colour consistency as I'd like, but when it's nice - good lord, it's nice....

The Jorge Montt Glacier is one of major tidewater glaciers of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field (Campo de Hielo Sur), Chile. This glacier is one of the most rapidly retreating glaciers in the world, losing around 24 km in length since 1898, much of it beginning in the 1990s with climate change (Journal of Glaciology, v 65 #263, 2019). The fractured face of the glacier is evidence of its instability, as is the large amount of brash ice around the face. Getting near the face on this rainy day required a lot of manoevering in a zodiac through the ice that had a consistency of a giant slushy. The dark area to the left is a patch of highly compressed old black ice.

A shot I've been wanting for awhile just happened to work out as GTW 4903 is seen crossing the Little Salt Creek trestle just west of Dieterich, IL. This line doesn't see much traffic as the only trains with much consistency that run are the local at night and the usual daily coal train to Dynergy at Lis.

January 1, 2024

I think I'm coming down a bit from the high of the last week and a half, and since it was the highest I'd been in quite a while, I feel a bit nervous about the decent.

This morning kinda sucked, last night before I went to bed I planned out this super cute forest nymph like outfit to wear for a shoot later, and this morning I woke up a few hours before I had to leave for work so thought perfect time to get this done!

So I fired up my photo-taking browser, slapped on a few pieces of jewelry I thought would add to it, and was on marketplace looking for the right pose when a photographer I wanted to work with for over a month now messaged me. I was like oh shoot, maybe I'll finally get that photo shoot in I'd been wanting to do!

He wanted to pop over to meet me, so I tped him, he went afk for a few but then we talked for a few minutes and then he starts mentioning a shoot he has in mind and I'm thinking yay here we go! I ask him when he wants to do it and just as he's replying how about right now, my computer fried... Again... And of course, by the time I came back there wasn't enough time left, and once again I missed my shot.

Yesterday I was in this complex sim, this morning I was just in my lag-less skybox and the sobering reality hit me, it's not just sims, it's people's avatars that are gonna crash that thing too. Now keep in mind, I can load up firestorm on medium graphics and be fine mostly anywhere, but beyond just the bratty "but I don't wanna" part of me that gets annoyed at that, the specific reason it really bothers me is beyond just (trying) to be a model, I want to take pictures too, I've always been a photographer long before anything else, and since it seems so unbelievably hard to get photographers to want to work with me it sucks thinking I'm gonna crash every time I do this anywhere with any lag, or with anyone else in the photos unless they're snapping the shots.

So I admit, it's made me feel a bit deflated today. No problem's unfix-able, I know I need a new computer, but even if I'm not struggling right now it's not like I have "fuck you" money either, and computer's are expensive! Even though I try to act like I can hang with the nerds, I also have never actually tried replacing a damn motherboard before and that's intimidating, let alone even knowing how to choose one, or what to select in a CPU/GPU combo, and then I when I see how much those things cost I'm like yikes that's half the cost of a computer alone, what if I replace it only to figure out my graphics card is the problem? The whole thing gives me anxiety, so instead the voice in my head tells me to shell up, sit in a corner hugging my knees, and give up the whole silly dream all together and just shoot pictures alone in my self-made hellish looking locations like the loner I am.

So once again, I log in, post a photo, and ramble on like the people of flickr want to sit on the other end of a therapy session. Even knowing a few people do care, my lack of self confidence over the years still pushes me into these corners, telling me to isolate myself and my feelings and not to overload any one person I know.

A few years ago while going for a walk during a break at work, I was venting to my co-worker who I considered my best friend at the time, someone I'd known over 5 years, just sighed and told me pretty bluntly "Nobody likes to hear about bad or sad things, people like to hear about happy times and things." That's stuck with me ever since, even if she didn't, and was basically the icing on the cake of a life long of friendships that have faded over time and for almost five years since then had pretty much convinced me to keep my feelings to myself, especially if they were "bad or sad" ones. I've never had a therapist, does everyone these days just pay someone to care? I always let my friends vent to me, but to this day I still don't feel truly comfortable doing the same anymore because maybe she was right. Maybe it's because I'm so honest and expressive that I exhaust people. Without meaning to have I turned my flickr into just another place for people to sigh as I ramble on into the void?

Was supposed to meet up with an old friend of mine in the real world yesterday too, I figured she'd probably call off but she suggested it so I thought why not? Sure enough an hour before it was time, something came up. Even when you're expecting to be stung it doesn't make the sting hurt that much less. Been over three years since I saw any of my friends, before my kid was born, I'm used to it. Times change, people change, I've changed, it just gets lonely sometimes.

How long until the same people who wanted to be my friend in the last week or two decide eh, maybe I bit off more than I wanted to chew? And likewise, how many times do I need to see people drive down the street of my life and make a U turn before I figure out maybe the consistency of that happening means there's something seriously wrong about the destination? Maybe it's not them, it's me.

And then the scariest question of all. If I know all this, and I haven't changed, can I? If that means not being the real me, do I actually want to? Or would I rather just sit in the corner alone, again and again?

~ Drew Barrymore

This photo sometimes represents me...coz I tend to neglect more important matters and most of the time being out of focus on things I do.

Excerpt from www.sakukatsu.com/about:

The name SAKU is inspired by 「サクサク (sakusaku)」, a Japanese expression for the crisp sound of Katsu. Since 2018, SAKU has been a proud Canadian brand dedicated to sharing authentic Katsu with our local communities. This commitment is reflected not only in the quality of every dish, but also in the warmth of the experience and the care our team puts into every detail.

We source our meat locally from Canadian farmers, carefully selecting only the best for our premium Katsu. Our pork comes from the finest cuts of DUROC breed pigs, primarily fed on barley, wheat, corn, and soy under the SFP Natural Pork Program. This ensures our pork is raised without hormones and antibiotics, and is non-GMO.

Panko is a Japanese-style breadcrumb coating used for our Katsu. Our bread is baked freshly every morning by our local bakery partner, COBS Bread, using a customized recipe to ensure consistency and the highest quality of texture.

Our house-made sesame dressing is freshly made every day by grinding roasted sesame seeds, delivering a perfect balance of nuttiness and sweetness that pairs perfectly with our Katsu.

Every Katsu arrives on a tray, thoughtfully arranged with everything that brings out its best flavor — lemon, mustard, tonkatsu sauce, sesame seeds, pickles, and lemon salt. Plus, every set includes unlimited refills of rice, tonjiru, and shredded cabbage. We are dedicated to delivering the best dining experience to every guest.
