Practicing more infrared photography. Got to out a little bit earlier to photograph today, but still didn't photograph when the sun is at its highest. Still happy with the results.

Getting the hang with color swapping in post processing then just doing more minute color edits after the swap.

Infrared is fun, becuase I don't know the outcome... It is a surprise.

Portrait of Pope Innocent X is an oil on canvas portrait by the Spanish painter Diego Velázquez, executed during a trip to Italy around 1650. Many artists and art critics consider it the finest portrait ever created. It is housed in the Galleria Doria Pamphilj in Rome. A smaller version is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and a study is on display at Apsley House in London. The painting is noted for its realism as an unflinching portrait of a highly intelligent, shrewd, and aging man. He is dressed in linen vestments, and the quality of the work is evident in the rich reds of his upper clothing, head-dress, and the hanging curtains.

The pope, born Giovanni Battista Pamphilj, was initially wary of sitting for Velázquez, but relented after he was shown reproductions of portraits by the artist. A contributing factor for this large advancement in the painter's career was that he had already depicted a number of members of Pamphilj's inner court. The pope, however, remained cautious, and the painting was initially displayed only to his immediate family, and was largely lost from public view through the 17th and 18th centuries.

The portrait was painted during Velázquez's second voyage to Italy, between 1649 and 1651. The subject's vestments are of light linen, suggesting that the picture was probably painted during summer, most likely in 1650. Velázquez included his signature on the paper in the pope's hands, but the date is not readable. There are two versions of the story of how Velázquez came to paint the portrait. According to one of these, while visiting Rome, Velázquez, already a renowned painter, was granted an audience with Pope Innocent X. He offered to paint a portrait of the pope, but Innocent X mistrusted Velázquez's fame, and asked for proof of Veláquez's skills. It would have been then that Velázquez painted the portrait of his servant Juan de Pareja (today at display in the Metropolitan Museum of New York). Once Innocent saw that portrait, he agreed to sit for the artist.

Apparently, when the pope saw the finished portrait, he exclaimed: "È troppo vero! È troppo vero!" ("It's too true! It's too true!"), though he did not deny the extraordinary quality of the portrait.[4] Experts doubt the veracity of this story, and argue that the pope allowed Velázquez to paint him because he had already painted with great success other people from the inner papal court, including the pope's barber.

The portrait was kept at private display by Innocent's family, the Pamphilj, who would display it in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery where it remains to this day. For much of the 17th and 18th centuries, it was a relatively unknown work, familiar only to a few connoisseurs who regarded it to be one of the finest portraits ever. French historian Hippolyte Taine considered the portrait as "the masterpiece amongst all portraits" and said "once it has been seen, it is impossible to forget".

The art dealer René Gimpel noted in his diary in 1923 "Morgan would have offered a million dollars for it. Velázquez was faced with a ruddy Italian, and the artist, accustomed to the pale complexions of his country, unhesitatingly steeped his brush in red the color of wine and brought the bon vivant devastatingly to life.... That face is a whirlpool of flesh, and blood, and life; the eyes are searching.

The 20th century artist Francis Bacon painted a series of distorted variants, often known as the "Screaming Popes", which total more than forty-five known variants executed during the 1950s and early 1960s. The picture was described by Gilles Deleuze as an example of creative re-interpretation of the classical. Bacon avoided seeing the original, but the painting remained the single greatest influence on him; its presence can be seen in many of his best works from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. In Bacon's 1953 version Study after Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X, the pope is shown screaming yet his voice is "silenced" by the enclosing drapes and dark rich colors which have been said to create a grotesque and nightmarish tone. The pleated curtains of the backdrop are rendered transparent and appear to fall through the representation of the pope's face.

A reversed form of the portrait features on the cover of occult rock band Ghost's 2018 album Prequelle.

A European Starling atop a crested saguaro cactus. Many consider the starling to be a nuisance bird, invasive and aggressive. I'm kind of indifferent. I like their iridescent plumage. Starlings were introduced to North America by an industrialist in the 1800s who thought it would be cool to introduce all the birds mentioned in the works of Shakespeare to North America. So he let loose a few in New York's Central Park and now Starlings can be found in the lower 48 states, a little bit of Alaska and most of the Canadian provinces. So I guess invasive is an apt description of this species.

At the beginning of this post, I mentioned that this starling is atop a crested saguaro. What's a crested saguaro? It's the same as a regular saguaro, but with an abnormality that makes the top of it kind of fan-shaped. I read that it's not real clear what causes this abnormality and it's relatively rare. There is one at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, AZ, however.

From Wikipedia : "Happisburgh Lighthouse in Happisburgh on the North Norfolk coast is the only independently operated lighthouse in Great Britain. It is also the oldest working lighthouse in East Anglia......

In 1987 Happisburgh was one of five lighthouses declared redundant by Trinity House and deactivation was planned for June 1988. Villagers organised a petition to oppose the closure, and as a result the date was postponed.

Under the Merchant Shipping Act of 1894, Trinity House may dispose of a working lighthouse only to an established Lighthouse Authority. On 25 April 1990 the Happisburgh Lighthouse Act received the Royal Assent establishing the Happisburgh Lighthouse Trust as a Local Light Authority, and Happisburgh became the only independently run operational lighthouse in Great Britain."

This shot is out of focus. I know. Unfortunately, I didn't take multiple shots of the scene. Still, I think there's something special about the image that transcends the technical flaws. Is it the idyllic nature of the scene? Is it the gender role reversal? I couldn't tell you. All I can say is that I consider myself lucky to have been at this place at this moment, and very unlucky not to have focused correctly!

Romanesco: Some consider it a variety of Broccoli, others a variety of Cauliflower. I consider it a variety of "WTF? That's seriously cool!". I picked this up at the Farmer's Market on Saturday. It should make a pretty interesting curry, though I might try and get a better picture of it first.

Update: I kept this around in the fridge with the full intention of getting a better shot before I ate it. Unfortunately, I procrastinated too long and it went bad....double damn! I never saw this again at the farmers market either. Oh well, maybe next year.

Personalidades

Consider Tour Montparnasse as an alternative to the endless queues (or lines if you don't like French) of La Tour Eiffel... After all you can't see the Eiffel Tower from the Eiffel can you? (Normally you can go on the top of the roof of the 56 floor Montparnasse Tower seeing Paris 360° but we were unlucky arriving on that one day when the roof was closed and had to see it from a window).

Dear Flickr friends, this marks the end of my travel blog (and my vacation days) from France, posting 27 images in 10 days "on the run" while exploring Paris and Normandie. Big and humble thanks to everyone who took time trying to keep up....

It has been a ragbag of postcards and streetshots, of monochrome and color, that really put the "fun in photography" back, as traveling always do for me. I enjoyed the liberty of not considering if it "fitted in" on my stream, or if I had the time to post to groups, to visit contacts, to leave time to get more comments...

Still, the feedback - as always - is the main reason why I enjoy Flickr so much. And after being a "hurricane" of new images to upload it is back to work - and to a regular pace from now on.

As time goes by, there will be more additions to the "Paris/Normandie 2011" set though, obviously. Cheers :-)

Francesco Guardi's 'St Mark's Basin and the Islands of Dan Giorgio and Giudecca' , 1774. Canaletto may be more famous, but many consider Guardi the greater, if not greatest ever, painter of Venetian cityscapes. Profound thanks to the management and staff of the Accademia Gallery in Venice for granting me the freedom to photograph their entire collection. Museum photography is an especially exacting task.

----------------

With its vast archaeological site and its Basilica, Aquileia is an artistic and historical treasure trove rightly part of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Founded by the Romans as a military outpost against the Barbarians in 181 B.C., given its position on the River Natissa, it grew into an important trade and commerce center, becoming one of the largest and richest Mediterranean cities of the Roman Empire.

Its fluvial port, the forum, the Basilica, the macellum, the baths, the Mausoleum, the Sepolcreto Romano, the amphitheatre are all still partly visible today. Its magnificence lasted until 452 AD when it was conquered by Unni leaded by Attila.

In the centuries to come, with the advent of Christianity Aquileia became a center of ecclesiastical organization: at the behest of Bishop Maxentius (811-838) the construction of the patriarchal Basilica was begun (completed after more than two centuries in 1031). Inside it, the remains of the former Paleochristian complex, built by the Bishop Theodorus in 4th century, with unique mosaics depicting scenes from the Old Testament, are still visible.

Eventually it became the seat of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which made the city into the dominant hub of the Christian world for Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the 18th Century.

It's hard to tell from the photo, but this is actually a miniature iris. Seen during our trip to Connecticut.

Lake Worth Beach is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States, which takes its name from the body of water along its eastern border known as the Lake Worth Lagoon. The lake itself was named for General William J. Worth, who led U.S. forces during the last part of the Second Seminole War. As of 2010, the population estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau was 34,910. It is a principal city of the Miami metropolitan area, which was home to an estimated 6,012,331 people in 2015.

Lake Worth Beach was incorporated as the "Town of Lake Worth" in June 1913. Many of the first residents were farmers from other parts of the American south and mid-west, looking to benefit from the growing winter vegetable market of the time. The city benefited with the rest of south Florida during the Florida land boom of the 1920s. A wooden automobile traffic bridge over Lake Worth was completed in 1919. The first casino and municipal beach complex was completed shortly thereafter. The 1920s also saw the completion of the Gulf Stream Hotel, now on the National Register of Historic Places.

The city was severely damaged in the 1928 hurricane, toppling the bell tower on the elementary school (today the City Hall Annex) and destroying the beachfront casino and automobile bridge over Lake Worth. This led to a severe economic decline within the community, during the Great Depression. Things were so dire in the city in the 1930s, that President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration built a striking, moorish-styled "City Gymnasium" on the corner of Lake Avenue and Dixie Highway. The building today serves as City Hall.

William A. Boutwell, who ran the Boutwell Dairy from 1927 to 1956, is credited with inventing half & half creamer; the dairy later merged with Alfar Creamery and then T.G. Lee, who distributed the product more widely until it became an American diner staple.

Development started again after World War II with many modest pensioners, especially from Quebec, Finland, and eventually Germany, moving to the city and building 1,000-square-foot (93 m2) cottages. These new immigrants brought their industrious nature with them as well as their native customs, restaurants, shops, and churches and for decades the town flourished. To this day, one can find an abundance of beer halls, chocolatiers, Bavarian delicatessens, and Lutheran churches, which stand out in the semitropical urban sprawl of South Florida.

The South Florida construction boom brought a new wave of immigrants in the past few decades. Central Americans have added a Hispanic aspect to Lake Worth's culture. Included in the 1980s immigration were many Guatemalan-Mayans who consider themselves indigenous people, rather than "Hispanic" or "Latino" and some may not speak Spanish. They mostly converse in Mam, Q'anjob'al, or any one of 22 existing Mayan languages spoken in Guatemala. Adding to the racial and linguistic mix of the city is a large Haitian population, speaking Haitian Creole and French.

During a short period of neglect and decline in the 1980s and 1990s, Lake Worth, in the words of then-city commissioner Dennis Dorsey, "had become known as the skin-flick capital of the country." The venue now known as the Lake Worth Playhouse was the Playtoy, and was well known in Palm Beach County as the theater that showed x-rated movies; Deep Throat was shown there, motivating a police raid.

The downtown area has seen a huge resurgence in interest and now sports an array of art galleries, sidewalk cafés and night clubs. Once moribund property values have soared. The city's main street, Lake Avenue, contains some of the oldest commercial structures in South Florida, including the Art Deco Lake Worth Playhouse.

The city was hit especially hard by Hurricanes Frances, Jeanne, and Wilma in 2004 and 2005. The fishing pier was quite damaged but was repaired (with the help of FEMA) and reopened in May 2009. The pier is currently open to the public with entry fees of $1 per adult sightseer, and $3 per adult fisherman. The city's public swimming pool has been restored, and besides serving to instruct Palm Beach County residents in swimming and water safety, hosts water-sport competitions. The pier is home to a tide gauge with a sporadic history, showing an above average rate of sea level rise.

In 2015, the city was accused of asking for business licenses from surrounding churches.

In 2019 a ballot initiative to change the name of the city to Lake Worth Beach passed with a narrow margin. The city states that the name change "will be implemented slowly".

The dark setting, with bright highlights the expression of critique, and the high contrast value tie this photo into my concentration. This self-portrait catches the eye due to its deep and interesting scenery as well as the abstract addition of the umbrellas. The road also adds depth to the image. Also, the rule of thirds coupled with the figure ground relationship allow for this photo to really work well. In addition, I added a high clarity effect to allow the photo to naturally blend into others of my concentration.

Editing-wise, I adjusted the whites, blacks, exposure, contrast, levels, clarity, and vibrance. I also layered together around five different photos of the umbrellas around the setting.

This begins a new image set. I've mentioned before that I consider Homo sapiens to be just another wildlife species: sometimes beautiful, occasionally dangerous, generally unpredictable, and always a challenge. Nevertheless, I have photographed people all my life, including friends, lovers, family, acquaintances, and strangers.

Iryn, an award winning Regina-based writer, was doing a writing retreat in Val Marie, and I offered to give her a tour of the area. Our first stop was at my favourite abandoned car, the 1939 Pontiac those of you who have followed my work may recognize. I don't think Iryn was expecting to be photographed, but I could not resist her beauty in the evening light.

Images to follow will include some contemporary material and a deep dive into the past. I know most of my Flickr friends prefer bears and badgers, and I promise more wildlife shots will follow. Still... you might enjoy some of the people shots... after all, this is who we are, and there's no getting away from it (or each other).
