Why do you worry? Don't even think about your raiment. Consider the lilies of the field how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin. And yet I say unto you, Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

The dry mix of Douglas fir, arbutus, and Garry oak ecosystem makes for good white fawn lily habitat. These flowers prefer dry open forests and meadows and they are plentiful on the more open west side of the Vancouver Island. On the east side their numbers were fewer, possibly due to the thick cover of snowberry bushes: islandnature.ca/2012/04/white-fawn-lilies-at-pipers-lagoo...

I consider myself very lucky to have a willing victim of my photographic exploits. My hubby, Ron Harper and I have been married for 10 years now and still loving it. I asked him to sit for a portrait session today to commemorate the moment.

If we consider the parameters (f/6.3, 1/30s, and ISO10000), we should be able to get an idea of the dimness existing when this photo was taken.

The photography in Vietnam was very technically demanding because the hides, set up in the middle of the forest, while allowing excellent proximity to the birds on one hand, also presented terrible lighting conditions.

However, it was still preferable to photograph with a dull sky than when there were some rays of light penetrating in certain spots, as most of the time it reflected on the leaves, which became almost perfect mirrors, making it impossible to obtain decent photos.

Anyone who considers ladybugs cute (I include myself) should consider this photo. I found this ladybug chowing down on a mass of little insects on the underside of a bean leaf. If you look very, very closely, you can see the remains of aphids and other tiny insects beneath the ladybug. I can not identity all of the tiny insects on the buffet table, but there are some aphids, which ladybugs favour. I'm in the process of preparing my computer for a major upgrade, so I've been working through my archived photos. The shot was taken in August 2017, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.

Since I consider myself somewhat of an expert on Snowy Egrets and Utqiaġvik is known for its population of Snowy Owls, I felt quite confident there would be opportunity during my recent visit to the Arctic to profit from such synergy. But apparently Snowy Egrets and Snowy Owls don't share as much in common as I had anticipated. Of the two birds I spotted, the closest I got was this heavily cropped, distant view while kneeling under a low-hung pipeline.

One of the things I enjoyed most during my Spring trip to Belarus, was the lovely Orthodox churches. This is a close up of the Saint Nicolas Church in the centre of Brest. I was in a group tour, which is actually the enemy of any decent photography, but I will try to find some more images of this fascinating country which I consider worth posting here.

Philadelphia's most famous son looks out on the street and considers a photographer. Two hundred years+ on, there are many reminders of him in a center city walkabout. This is known as the "Keys to the Community" bust, a relatively recent bronze that has the imprint of hundreds of keys in the surface. Franklin established the first fire company in the Colonies in 1736 on this site, and now his bust sits in the garden of a fire station that descends directly from that first fire house.

The wall to the right of the photographer is the side of the Betsy Ross House, the seamstress who sewed the first American flag in 1776. History walks with you when you take a ramble in this old city.

For those who consider to visit the World Heritage mine of Dinorwic, and love to experience a wonderful mini adventure:

If you skirt around the Dali’s Hole from the east, drop down onto a scree and over tumbled rocks, you get to a ledge were the first tunnel starts, the one I showed you in my previous upload. Supposing you continue through this narrow shaft you get to the light again at the far end. It suddenly opens out into a heavenly green area, logically called Eden, with a beautiful waterfall, splashing down into a deep hole in the earth. From that point you have to pass a small ridge that runs along the ravine with a deep vertical drop, not really for the faint-hearted because you have to hug a huge rock and span your arms across it to get around it, without dropping into the chasm below. This way leads to a second dark tunnel, in which the risk of getting wet boots isn't small, due to the stream that flows through it. But the brave stickler will be rewarded before he or she even gets to sites called the Lost World and Mordor with walls that bear names like Sauron and Saruman. At the end of this shaft, namely you will find this little gem. But you have to look carefully, not to miss this small and exeptional piece of graffiti art, made by an artist with the cover name marymary and created to pay wholehearted tributes to the quarrymen, who had such a tough time.

The Birmingham Main Line Canal in Smethwick, Sandwell, West Midlands.

On 24 January 1767 a number of prominent Birmingham businessmen, including Matthew Boulton and others from the Lunar Society, held a public meeting in the White Swan, High Street, Birmingham to consider the possibility of building a canal from Birmingham to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal near Wolverhampton, taking in the coalfields of the Black Country. They commissioned the canal engineer James Brindley to propose a route. Brindley came back with a largely level route via Smethwick, Oldbury, Tipton, Bilston and Wolverhampton to Aldersley.

On 24 February 1768 an Act of Parliament was passed to allow the building of the canal, with branches at Ocker Hill and Wednesbury where there were coal mines. The first phase of building was to Wednesbury whereupon the price of coal sold to domestic households in Birmingham halved overnight. Vested interests of the sponsors caused the creation of two terminal wharves in Birmingham. The 1772 Newhall Branch and wharf (now built upon) originally extended north of, and parallel to Great Charles Street. The 1773 Paradise Street Branch split off at Old Turn Junction and headed through Broad Street Tunnel, turned left at what is now Gas Street Basin and under Bridge Street to wharves on a tuning fork-shaped pair of long basins: Paradise Wharf, also called Old Wharf. The Birmingham Canal Company head office was finally built there, opposite the western end of Paradise Street.

By 6 November 1769, 10 miles (16 km) had been completed to Hill Top collieries in West Bromwich, with a one mile summit pound at Smethwick. Brindley had tried to dig a cutting through the hill at Smethwick but had encountered ground too soft to cope with. The canal rose through six narrow (7 ft) locks to the summit level and descended through another six at Spon Lane.

In 1770 work started towards Wolverhampton. On 21 September 1772 the canal was joined with the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal at Aldersley Junction via another 20 locks (increased to 21 in 1784 to save water). Brindley died a few days later. The canal measured 22 miles and 5 fur-longs (22⅝ miles), mostly following the contour of the land but with deviations to factories and mines in the Black Country and Birmingham.

Over the next thirty years, as more canals and branches were built or connected it became necessary to review the long, winding, narrow Old Main Line. With a single towpath boats passing in opposite directions had to negotiate their horses and ropes. In 1824 Thomas Telford was commissioned to examine alternatives.

Telford proposed major changes to the section between Birmingham and Smethwick, widening and straightening the canal, providing towpaths on each side, and cutting through Smethwick Summit to bypass the locks, allowing lock-free passage from Birmingham to Tipton.

By 1827 the New Main Line passed straight through, and linked to, the loops of the Old Main Line, creating Oozells Loop, Icknield Port Loop, Soho Loop, Cape Loop and Soho Foundry Loop, allowing continued access to the existing factories and wharves.

A year earlier he had built an improved Rotton Park Reservoir (Edgbaston Reservoir) on the site of an existing fish pool, bringing its capacity to 300 million imperial gallons (1,400,000 m3). A canal feeder took water to, and along, a raised embankment on the south side of the New Main Line to his new Engine Arm branch canal and across an elegant cast iron aqueduct to top up the higher Wolverhampton Level at Smethwick Summit. The reservoir also fed water to the Birmingham Level at the adjacent Icknield Port Loop.

The Smethwick Summit was bypassed by 71 ft cutting through Lunar Society member, Samuel Galton's land, creating the Galton Valley, 70 feet deep and 150 feet wide, running parallel to the Old Main Line. Telford's changes here were completed in 1829.

By 1838 the New Main Line was complete: 22⅝ miles of slow canal reduced to 15⅝; between Birmingham and Tipton, a lock-free dual carriageway. It was also called the Island Line as it was cut straight through the hill at Smethwick known as the Island.

Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

If then God so clothe the grass, which is today in the field, and tomorrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?

And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.

For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. ...

Luke 12:27-31 (KJV)

When on a workshop, each night I review the next day's proposed photography location and consider all the details and the latest weather forecast. On this particular evening we were in Te Anau and the forecast for Fiordland was for strong North West winds and heavy rain. Our objective for sunrise was Key Summit, which from Te Anau meant a 3am departure. With a forecast like that you would be forgiven for choosing not to go. I reviewed the forecast closely and especially the speed of the incoming weather and the weather maps. Having many years experience in New Zealand's mountains meant I had some idea of how the weather developed, but of course no one has a crystal ball. I said to the group that rather than stay in bed we should roll the dice and try our luck. We awoke to calm conditions, as we approached the start of the Routeburn track it was still dark but I could see we were in cloud. As we walk along the track our head lamps picked up the tiny droplets of water in the air, it was strangely calm. Shortly before we reached the turnoff to Key Summit the air cleared and we could see stars above. I knew we had climbed above the low cloud and I had a sense this was going to be one of those magic mornings in the mountains...

Alien art

My picture above is showing that an alien bird is picking up a leaf.

Development of some aliens from an animal stage to a developed stage ( at tree of life) might take very long time or the expected development might not happen at all if some components don't come together.

The environment, the world they are in, might not be very rich for the development of the aliens, and/or biological development might head in a very different direction. Their "tree of life" might not have proper branches for a progressive development. The tree would be weak, like a tree in a desert.

For a chemical reaction, we have to have specific atoms. We need substances to create other substances. For reactions to happen, we have to have some conditions present at the place where the reaction should happen.

Already developed aliens would be the lucky ones, passing all hurdles. When we consider the existence of billions of stars, planets and a lot of different places within planets in our universe, the probability would be very hight to be lucky for some aliens.

Another issue is that we might not see any alien at all because of the distance between stars and galaxies. Non of us ( we and aliens ) might reach the very high development to create very high technology to fly that far ( the distance between galaxies getting more in each day, expanding universe ) before our universe collapse, before the black holes pull the galaxies, before the stars of the planets explode, before the artificial intelligence takes over ( AI doesn’t need to be conscious and alive, and doesn’t need to have feelings and emotions. it can survive on its own if it is programmed properly ), etc.

Al might be the biggest threat to humans and aliens, it could wipe out them very easily. The creation of very destructive Al is possible when we consider how much hatred there are in our world between nations, races and between the people with different religions.

Have a great week and thanks for the visit

Luke 12:27-30

It's a pretty basic concept that we should trust in God to provide our needs, and yet I am one that fails in this area regularly! He's never let me down and yet I still panic inside when my business slows down and the bills pile up. It's good for me to stop and consider the lilies.

During stressful times I find myself dreaming of the ocean. There are few things as wonderful as simply walking along the beach at sunset. The Calla Lilies in this photo meander along a small creek that leads to the sea. If you look closely you can just barely see the waves at the end of the valley. After shooting the lilies the sun sank into the horizon and the light faded. I put my camera and tripod on my shoulder and walked out along the beach. The seagulls circled around calling out the way seagulls do. I stood there listening to the sounds and watching the waves. Suddenly a big swell rolled up the beach and before I knew it I was knee deep in ocean! I figured since I was all wet I may as well take a few long exposures before it was totally dark. It was fun but none of the images were worth keeping. It didn't matter. I had the lilies I came for and I was happy.

There's something that intrigues me about the lilies in this photo. Nearly everyone has the same response when I show them this photo. "Wow! Those don't even look real!!" Well all of these flowers were very real. I searched through each and every one for over an hour before planting my tripod in this spot. The lilies were so fresh and perfect on that day. But it's been a few weeks since then. All of the perfect flowers in this image are now more like dried raisins. It's kind of a weird thought isn't it? I've often felt that photography is like putting time in a bottle.
