Did I say lost? I literally mean it.

A few months ago, I traveled to Shanghai for work. It was my first visit to China, and with all the misinformation and propaganda floating around, I wasn’t sure what to expect. People told me that nothing I was used to would work, everything would be in Chinese, and I would struggle to get around.

Well, that was partly true, but it wasn’t as bad as they made it seem. I could do almost everything through WeChat. Calling taxis, making payments, event to the street vendors. And my international credit card worked perfectly once it was configured in Ali Pay and We Chat Pay. In fact, I had more trouble with payments in India, where local wallets don’t support international cards, and without a local bank account linked to a local phone number, you’re stuck. ATMs with long queues are often the only option.

As for internet restrictions, most foreign sites like Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram are blocked in China, but a VPN easily bypasses that. I don’t think the Chinese government is unaware of it, but they just don’t seem too concerned.

Now, about getting lost.

On my second day, I wanted to capture the breathtaking view from Shanghai Bay. The previous day, I had taken a taxi there, but this time, I decided to walk. The route seemed simple. A straight road behind my hotel led directly to the spot. I left early, took my time composing shots, and snapped some images of the city draped in low clouds.

Then, it was time to head back and get ready for work.

Instead of retracing my steps, I decided to take the fastest route back. Since Google Maps is useless in China, I relied on Apple Maps, which I had read was a better alternative. Local maps like Baidu exist, but they’re entirely in Chinese, and for a short trip, I wasn’t keen on navigating them.

Well, let’s just say “works” is a strong word when it comes to Apple Maps.

Before I knew it, I was completely lost in this endless city. The map confidently guided me to a hotel, just not my hotel.

I walked into the reception, only to realize my mistake. The staff gave me directions, but coming from a small town with just five main roads, I found them hard to follow.

Asking around didn’t help much since most people didn’t speak English, including the policeman. Thankfully, technology came to the rescue. A translation app helped us communicate, and a policeman pointed me in the right direction.

The funniest part? Apple Maps wasn’t entirely wrong. It had led me to my hotel’s back entrance, which had no signage. I had spent 40 minutes searching for a place that was right in front of me.

By the time I made it inside, I had missed the hotel’s fantastic breakfast. With no time to spare, I took a quick shower and rushed off to work, but at least I wasn’t late!

So, “Lost in Shanghai” felt like the perfect title, not just for the mood of the image I captured, but for the experience itself.

Please have a look at my website www.avisekhphotography.com for all my recent works.

Have a nice weekend.

Hope you will enjoy the picture.

Excerpt of magazine article recovered from displaced residential structure within the Transatlantic Occlusion Zone, October 9th, 2782:

"The XM318 SYRINX 'Hive Killer' has been a staple of widespread conflicts since its initial fielding by Coalition forces in the late 2050s.

Although it offers a wide assortment of offensive ordnance, far and away its most popular setup is the Heavy MetalStorm pod. Twelve rounds of .75 Caliber HEGM (High-Explosive Guided Munition) linked to a fearsomely sophisticated sensor array can exact brutal carnage upon light armor and entire HIVE encampments in a lightweight and durable reinforced nanotube frame.

The platform can be configured for semi-automatic fire, three-round burst, and a devastating one-shot 12-round volley colloquially known as 'The Apostles'."

Last night Toronto experienced the most frightening but beautiful display of lightning yet this summer.

I setup the tripod, pointed the camera at the CN Tower, and configured the intervalometer to shoot continuously until it filled the memory card and watched as the storm passed over the city. I took so many shots that I'll have to piece them together as a video :)

Who could ask for more?

On that day in summer of 2015 it was the first time I saw and captured this Garuda Indonesia heavy, sporting the SkyTeam colour scheme.

The Airbus was painted into this striking scheme in February 2015, and re-configured into an all Economy Class cabin layout of 360 seats in August 2015.

It is here seen on short final to runway 25R as flight GA860 inbound from Jakarta/CGK in the late afternoon.

Sand coloured Audi RS e-tron GT, Audi pavilion, Autostadt, Wolfsburg.

In the Audi pavilion they have 5 or 6 cars. This one was the prettiest. It is low and wide for a great stance, good location of the wheels. great proportions, well balanced. It needs more rubber height and less rim diameter. Replace the carbon mirror caps with body colored caps. Nice looking headlights.

It is €150k and electric. The fear I have with these things is this: the car is 'connected', it is no longer autonomous, and the factory can remotely configure the cars software. Maybe I'm just an old man but the manufacturer's goal is to make money. Via software, he can screw his customer. You have a perfectly fine working car and the next day they break your car via remote software update. Ethics and VW.

Golden Gate Park > San Francisco

Golden Gate Park, located in San Francisco, California, United States, is a large urban park consisting of 1,017 acres of public grounds. It is administered by the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department, which began in 1871 to oversee the development of Golden Gate Park. Configured as a rectangle, it is similar in shape but 20 percent larger than Central Park in New York, to which it is often compared. It is over three miles long east to west, and about half a mile north to south. With 13 million visitors annually, Golden Gate is the fifth most-visited city park in the United States after Central Park in New York City, Lincoln Park in Chicago, and Balboa and Mission Bay Parks in San Diego.

The BMW R nineT is a standard motorcycle made by BMW Motorrad since 2014. It is a retro styled roadster marketed by BMW to custom builders and enthusiasts as a "blank canvas for customizing".

The BMW R nineT has several design elements configured to allow the bike to be easily modified, such as separate engine and chassis wiring harnesses and minimal bolts attaching the rear subframe, tail lights, and headlight.

The R nineT version of the bike has upside-down (USD) telescopic forks rather than BMW's usual Telelever front suspension. The other versions have conventional telescopic forks.

All variations have an air/oil-cooled oilhead flat twin (or boxer) 1,170 cc (71 cu in) engine, which has the inlet manifold at the rear of the cylinders and the exhaust at the front. The oilhead is arguably[by whom?] more suitable for customization as it has a more conventional appearance than the new water-cooled engine.

The R nineT Scrambler knows no conventions: rough, unadapted, individual. Its handling is balanced and unique. With the boxer, you can ride around with your head held high, it is available for every spontaneity. And the typical Scrambler look together with the relaxed seating position makes a lot of difference – and above all is a lot of fun. Design your R nineT Scrambler so that it fits perfectly into your life. No matter what the others say. Just typical Soulfuel.

Turn on the power: With the air/oil-cooled boxer of the Scrambler, you can do this in a playful way. We have optimised its power and torque curve and noticeably increased it in the 4,000 to 6,000 rpm range. This way, you have the power exactly where you need it and can remain powerful and completely relaxed out on the road. The peak torque remains at 116 Nm at 6,000 rpm. And of course the boxer complies with the Euro 5 standard.

BNSF's Provo-Denver is really well-blocked today. Tank cars, followed by covered hoppers, follows by tank cars...and a box car on the end. Instead of the power being configured in the standard 3x2, this morning is setup in a 4x1 configuration.

The Monitor PDW is above all very compact, lightweight, ergonomic and modular. Inspired by IWI's X95, the straight-forward design shows both simplicity and elegance.

The weapon above is set up for .223 REM, but it can be configured to other calibers as well, such as 6.8 SPC, .300 BLK, or 6.5 Grendel. Only the bolt and barrel require an exchange.

Oftentimes when you see barb wire configured differently than usual, it is due to someone at one point running into a fence with their vehicle and damaging it. In this case, the broken wire was simply draped around the existing fence to keep it out of the way.

This unusually configured conversion of a production TBM-3 torpedo bomber wears allover glossy dark blue finish and carries a white painted AN/Aps-4 search radar pod beneath the starboard wing. The ventral gun position and after "greenhouse" have been removed to make room for personnel and electronic equipment.
