Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langham_Place_(Hong_Kong):

Langham Place is a commercial complex and shopping centre in Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong. The official opening was on 25 January 2005. The complex occupies two blocks defined by Argyle Street, Portland Street, Shantung Street and Reclamation Street. Shanghai Street separates the two portions of the complex, which are connected via two overhead walkways. A hotel is on one side of the development while the commercial elements are located on the other side.

The complex was the result of an urban renewal project under Land Development Corporation, later known as Urban Renewal Authority (URA). Several city blocks, including the old "Bird Street" marketplace, were demolished to make way for the commercial complex.

Langham Place Tower has a gross floor area of 17,000 m2 (180,000 sq ft), and comprises a 59-storey office tower, a 15-level shopping centre with two basement levels, a 665-room hotel and a car park with 250 parking spaces. The complex is connected to the Mong Kok station of the MTR via an underground passage (Exit C3).

Due to the high price of land and the higher yield on retail property in Hong Kong, the Langham Place Mall departs from the common Western model of the flat shopping mall. It is the second "vertical mall" in Hong Kong. The exterior of the mall is characterised by a multi-faceted façade of yellow fissured Brazilian granite stretching from street level to the roof. Another distinctive feature is the 9-storey glass atrium which lets in natural lighting and allows passersby to look through the middle of the building.

The Mall's 56,000 m2 (600,000 sq ft) of retail space is configured over 15 levels, with 5,600 m2 (60,000 sq ft) of space per level from the second basement level to fourth level; and 3,700 m2 (40,000 sq ft) of space per level from level 5 upwards. There is a food court on level 4 and a cinema run by CINEMA CITY on level 8 and an "indoor alfresco dining" area on the top floor.

The mall was designed by the Los Angeles-based firm Jerde Partnership and opened for business in November 2004.

N757HW, a Boeing 757 configured as a flying test bed and owned by Honeywell Internation, taxiing for departure at Geneva before routing to Amsterdam

In 1997, the owners of the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association, which then played in the eight-year-old, publicly financed Miami Arena, threatened to move to Broward County unless they were given the $38 million parcel of land for the new arena by Alex Penelas, then-mayor of Miami. The agreement provided that the county receive 40% of annual profits of the arena above $14 million.

Kaseya Center is a multi-purpose arena on Biscayne Bay in Miami, Florida. The arena was previously named American Airlines Arena from opening in 1999 until 2019, FTX Arena from 2019 until 2023 following the bankruptcy of FTX, and Miami-Dade Arena during an interim period in 2023. Since April 2023, the naming rights to the arena are owned by Kaseya under a 17-year, $117.4 million agreement.

The arena has capacity for 19,500 people, including 2,105 club seats, 80 luxury suites, and 76 private boxes. Additionally, for more intimate performances, The Waterfront Theater, the largest indoor theater in Florida, is within the arena complex, seating between 3,000 and 5,800 patrons. The theater can be configured for concerts, worship events, family events, musical theatre shows and other stage productions. American Airlines, which has a hub at Miami International Airport, maintains a travel center at the venue.

The arena is known for its unusual scoreboard, designed by artist Christopher Janney and installed in 1998 as part of the original construction. Drawing on the underwater anemone forms, the scoreboard also changes colors depending on the atmosphere.

For concerts in an arena configuration, end stage capacity is 12,202 for 180° shows, 15,402 for 270° shows, and 18,309 for 360° shows. For center stage concerts the arena can seat 19,146.

WTVJ, the city's NBC owned-and-operated station in Miami, had their Downtown Miami Studios in the back of the arena from 2001 until 2011.

In 2013, the Miami Heat paid rent on the arena for the first time pursuant to the percentage rent agreement with the county; the payment was $3.32 million.

The arena is directly served by the Miami Metrorail at Government Center station via free transfers to Metromover Omni Loop, providing direct service to Freedom Tower station and Park West station stations, within walking distance. It is also within walking distance from the Historic Overtown/Lyric Theatre station.

The arena has 939 parking spaces, with those spaces reserved for premium seat and Dewar's 12 Clubhouse ticket holders during Heat games. Park Jockey manages the arena's on-site parking.

Golden Gate Park > San Francisco

Golden Gate Park, located in San Francisco, California, United States, is a large urban park consisting of 1,017 acres of public grounds. It is administered by the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department, which began in 1871 to oversee the development of Golden Gate Park. Configured as a rectangle, it is similar in shape but 20 percent larger than Central Park in New York, to which it is often compared. It is over three miles long east to west, and about half a mile north to south. With 13 million visitors annually, Golden Gate is the fifth most-visited city park in the United States after Central Park in New York City, Lincoln Park in Chicago, and Balboa and Mission Bay Parks in San Diego.

The Singapore National Day Parade is a national ceremony in Singapore that, as its name implies, includes a parade on Singapore's National Day on August 9, in commemoration of Singapore's independence that is usually held at the Float @Marina Bay and various decentralized venues all over Singapore, Padang and the National Stadium.

This year, NDP will bring the mobile column to five heartland sites on 10 August 2019. The mobile column will be travelling to Bishan, Geylang Serai, Jurong East, Punggol, and Woodlands, where there will also be carnivals organised by the People’s Association. The one-day celebrations will culminate with dazzling fireworks displays at each of the five sites.

These are a series of photos, long exposures of the Marina Bay and Central Business District from the Sail @ Marina Bay - The structure of The Sail is 245 m (804 ft) with 70 storeys and is one of Singapore's tallest condominium/apartment. The building was erected on reclaimed land and was designed by Peter Pran and Timothy Johnson with leading design firm NBBJ. The two buildings include a glass facade, sculpted Marina Bay Tower to look like a sail, and configured the complex representative of a huge canyon, reflecting his utilisation of inspirations by the sun, the wind, and the water respectively.

Titan Airways Airbus A321neo G-XATW departing Glasgow for Aberdeen as "Zap 646." It arrived early afternoon from Stansted with Boris Johnson onboard and departed to Aberdeen after around 6 hours on the ground.

The aircraft is operated by Titan Airways on behalf of the UK Government and is configured in a VIP configuration. The aircraft was originally delivered in an all black livery and it was originally planned to operate on behalf of luxury tour operator TCS World Travel. However, it was later repainted to match RAF's VIP Voyager ZZ336 "Vespina" and has since operated on behalf of the UK Government for short haul trips, primarily with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on board.

This monstrosity of a bridge, built in 1896, is complex to describe because so many spans compose it. In addition, some have been demolished over the years. Roughly, here is the layout...from north to south, there are two five panel Pratt deck truss spans, followed by a six panel deck truss, which long, long ago was actually a trapezoidal through truss span. Then comes the main span, a giant Pennsylvania through truss span. Continuing south, there are then four Parker truss spans. Continuing south off the river, there are a few deck plate girder spans, ending with a set of seven beautiful red brick arch spans.

The bridge's truss spans are pin connected. The design of the truss spans is extremely complex. Strictly speaking, the trusses are configured as truss spans with four truss lines that are not evenly spaced apart, which produces three roadways of varying width. There is one wide roadway, and one narrower roadway, and in between the two an extremely narrow roadway. However, to understand the way the spans are structured, the trusses might also be thought of as two parallel truss spans (each with the more typical two truss lines) that sit side by side, and have their struts and portal bracing tied together. In between the two trusses, a third roadway is created. Thinking of the bridge in this manner might make sense, since unlike the other areas of the bridge, the narrow middle roadway is devoid of sway bracing, and has only portal bracing and struts connecting the nearby truss spans. This tends to make the bridge look visually like two parallel trusses.

Numerous unusual details exist on the truss spans. A few examples include complicated diagonal member connections to the bottom chord, lateral bracing that is positioned so that it passes through holes in the deck stringers, and some sections of bottom chord that include both eyebar and built-up box beam in the same panel. The bottom chord in the main span is polygonal, another unusual detail. There is an extremely wide variety of member sizes, styles, and built-up beam configurations on this bridge. The bridge has an infinite number of details to look at, and to a casual observer it may seem that no two parts of the bridge are alike. The bridge has a listed vertical clearance of 21.1 feet.

This bridge once served both rail and vehicular traffic, until it was closed to all traffic in 2001. Fortunately, enough people cared about this spectacular bridge to restore it for pedestrian use. The bridge reopened to non-motorized traffic in 2003 under the ownership of a group dedicated to preserving and reusing the bridge. Since then, it has been a popular pedestrian crossing of the Ohio River in the area. Additionally, a plan in 2006 was undertaken to create a "bridge climb" which was ultimately unsuccessful due to a lack of popularity and was canceled a few years later. The "bridge climb" was perhaps unsuccessful because it was a lot of hassle for something that was not real special, and amounted to merely a walk on the top chord of the through trusses. Railings and stairs were added to the top chord for this purpose. Despite this, taking the climb also included a safety training before people could do the climb.

This bridge is the most historically significant surviving bridge in the area next to the Roebling Bridge itself, and the community responded appropriately to save a breathtaking structure. The bridge is an example of unusual bridge construction, utilizing unusual types of structural elements. The size of the bridge alone is significant, and the main span would have been a very long simple span when completed and thus is technologically significant. When other cities have demolished bridges as significant as this one, Cincinnati and Newport went in the other direction and saved this bridge.

The Newport Southbank Bridge (or Purple People Bridge) was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on April 17, 2001. All the information above was found on the website HistoricBridges.org at this link:

Located in a commercial area in the center of Cologne, called Schildergasse, and next to a busy street, the new Peek & Cloppenburg department store is a composition of glass, steel and wood: classic materials that adorn entirely a modern building. dedicated to fashion.

With a fairly massive building, modeled in a curved shape, this building rises five stories and occupies an area of 23,000 square meters. Over its 130 meters in length, it traces a fluid curve which seems to embrace a more conventional orthogonal building. Its roof descends gradually from both ends to reach its lower level in the center of the building, to avoid competing with the nearby Saint-Antoine Church.

The 66 arches are made from a combination of several pieces of Siberian larch wood. Separated by 2.5 meters from each other, these arches are connected by means of a steel substructure formed of profiles and stretchers and, being suspended from the main concrete structure, they never touch the ground. Their curves meet in the undulating upper beam at the top, configuring a transparent vault from which the bell towers of the nearby Cologne Cathedral can be seen. Virtually all of the glass panels on the façade are different, a great but necessary complexity to accommodate the changing curvature of the volume, which was ultimately resolved through mechanized glass cutting processes. The spaces are bathed in natural light, but with a main northwest orientation, heat gains can be absorbed, and in addition, an integrated system of automatic blinds provides protection from the sun during the hottest days.

Many Avengers have survived into the 21st century working as spray-applicators and water-bombers throughout North America, particularly in New Brunswick. Forest Protection Limited (FPL) of Fredericton once owned and operated the largest civilian fleet of Avengers in the world. FPL began operating Avengers in 1958 after purchasing 12 surplus TBM-3E aircraft from the Royal Canadian Navy. Use of the Avenger fleet at FPL peaked in 1971 when 43 aircraft were in use as both water bombers and spray planes. FPL was still operating 3 Avengers in 2007 configured as water-bombers. The company sold 3 Avengers in 2004 (C-GFPS, C-GFPM, and C-GLEJ) to museums or private collectors. The Central New Brunswick Woodsmen’s Museum has a former FPL Avenger on static display.

"re-configured "F12/Cargo (Covid-19)" May 2020"

Alignment of the James Webb Space Telescope is now complete. After full review, the observatory has been confirmed to be capable of capturing crisp, well-focused images with each of its four powerful onboard science instruments.

Upon completing the seventh and final stage of telescope alignment, the team held a set of key decision meetings and unanimously agreed that Webb is ready to move forward into its next and final series of preparations, known as science instrument commissioning. This process of setting up and testing the instruments will take about two months before scientific operations begin in the summer.

The alignment of the telescope across all of Webb’s instruments can be seen in a series of images that captures the observatory’s full field of view.

Engineering images of sharply focused stars in the field of view of each instrument demonstrate that the telescope is fully aligned and in focus. For this test, Webb pointed at part of the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, providing a dense field of hundreds of thousands of stars across all the observatory’s sensors.

The sizes and positions of the images shown here depict the relative arrangement of each of Webb’s instruments in the telescope’s focal plane, each pointing at a slightly offset part of the sky relative to one another.

Webb’s three imaging instruments are NIRCam (images shown here at a wavelength of 2 microns), NIRISS (image shown here at 1.5 microns), and MIRI (shown at 7.7 microns, a longer wavelength revealing emission from interstellar clouds as well as starlight).

ESA's NIRSpec is a spectrograph rather than imager but can take images, such as the 1.1 micron image shown here, for calibrations and target acquisition. The dark regions visible in parts of the NIRSpec data are due to structures of its microshutter array, which has several hundred thousand controllable shutters that can be opened or shut to select which light is sent into the spectrograph.

Lastly, Webb’s Fine Guidance Sensor tracks guide stars to point the observatory accurately and precisely; its two sensors are not generally used for scientific imaging but can take calibration images such as those shown here. This image data is used not just to assess image sharpness but also to precisely measure and calibrate subtle image distortions and alignments between sensors as part of Webb’s overall instrument calibration process.

The optical performance of the telescope continues to be better than the engineering team’s most optimistic predictions. Webb’s mirrors are now directing fully focused light collected from space down into each instrument, and each instrument is successfully capturing images with the light being delivered to them. The image quality delivered to all instruments is “diffraction-limited,” meaning that the fineness of detail that can be seen is as good as physically possible given the size of the telescope. From this point forward the only changes to the mirrors will be very small, periodic adjustments to the primary mirror segments.

Now, the Webb team will turn its attention to science instrument commissioning. Each instrument is a highly sophisticated set of detectors equipped with unique lenses, masks, filters, and customised equipment that helps it perform the science it was designed to achieve. The specialised characteristics of these instruments will be configured and operated in various combinations during the instrument commissioning phase to fully confirm their readiness for science. With the formal conclusion of telescope alignment, key personnel involved with the commissioning of each instrument have arrived at the Mission Operations Center at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, USA, and some personnel involved with telescope alignment have concluded their duties.

Though telescope alignment is complete, some telescope calibration activities remain: As part of scientific instrument commissioning, the telescope will be commanded to point to different areas in the sky where the total amount of solar radiation hitting the observatory will vary to confirm thermal stability when changing targets. Furthermore, ongoing maintenance observations every two days will monitor the mirror alignment and, when needed, apply corrections to keep the mirrors in their aligned locations.

Webb is an international partnership between NASA, ESA and CSA.

While the #Artemis II crew is training for their mission around the Moon, teams at #NASAMarshall are testing and configuring the flight software for NASA's Space Launch System rocket that will launch them on their journey.

When #NASASLS launches NASA’s Artemis II crew aboard the Orion spacecraft, the flight software will command the rocket for the first eight minutes of the mission through the separation of its in-space propulsion stage. Inside the SLS Software Development Facility at Marshall, software engineers recently completed the first part of formal qualification testing for the missions flight software - which consists of approximately 50,000 lines of code.

While the practice of running hood unit locomotives "long hood forward" is most famously associated with the Southern Railway, all of Canadian National's London-built GP9 diesels were also configured to operate long hood forward upon their delivery in the late 1950's. The same was true of virtually all of CN's early hood units. Many - but not all - of the GP9s were converted to run short hood forward over the next several decades. Now, as the roster of GP9s dwindles on Canadian National, there are even fewer in existence that are still set up to run this way. CN 7071 is one of these units, and on this particular day it was positioned to lead L583 east out of London along with two other GM products. CM&EE department 'Test Car 6' (ADB 975290) is seen sandwiched between 58 005 and 58 004 in the sidings at Toton Depot between testing on loaded MGR trains in the area.

At the time new class 58's were experiencing wheelslip issues and causing rail burns which was thought to stem from the bogie centre wheel set springing arrangement. 58 004 was fitted with modified centre axle springs on both bogies and to draw a comparison similar aged 58 005 was attached the other end of the Chief Mechanical & Electrical Engineers Test Car No.6. The pair were used with the coach to conduct trials on loaded MGR coal trains out of Sutton Colliery. The result of the testing suggested the revised springing made little difference but testing revealed a problem with the traction motors when running in slow speed mode with the motors configured in series. Testing revealed the centre axle could spin to 20mph when others were at 0.5mph. In the end the 58's were modified to perform more like a class 56 in slow speed mode where the motors run in series-parallel to cope with low adhesion.

An image of an art installation in the Tate Britain Gallery by the Artist Cerith Wyn Evans.

The artwork is made from almost 2km of neon lighting, suspended from the ceiling and configured into straight lines, sweeping curves and spiralling forms.

I really liked the neon artwork working against the classical architecture of the Tate Britain, and it was great to see the fantastic Turner paintings in the Gallery :)
