Blooms and buds, for hope and awakening.
Purple was the colour worn by Roman magistrates; it became the imperial colour worn by the rulers of the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, and later by Roman Catholic bishops.
Similarly in Japan, the color is traditionally associated with the Emperor and aristocracy.
Phalaenopsis Orchid, known as the Moth Orchid, abbreviated Phal in the horticultural trade, is an orchid genus of approximately 60 species.
Phalaenopsis is one of the most popular orchids in the trade, through the development of many artificial hybrids.
It is native to southern China, the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia (Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.), New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and Queensland.
They bloom in their full glory for several weeks. If kept in the home, the flowers may last two to three months.

The tomato is native to South America and a prehistoric introduction to Central America and Southern parts of North America.
Genetic evidence shows that the progenitors of tomatoes were herbaceous green plants with small green fruit with a center of diversity in the highlands of Peru.
Some believe Spanish explorer Cortez may have been the first to transfer the small yellow tomato to Europe after he captured the Aztec city of Tenochtítlan in 1521, now Mexico City.
Yet others believe Christopher Columbus, an Italian working for the Spanish monarchy, discovered the tomato earlier in 1493. The earliest discussion of the tomato in European literature appeared in an herbal written in 1544 by Pietro Andrea Mattioli, an Italian physician and botanist, who named it pomi d’oro, golden apple.
The tomato is an herbaceous plant of the nightshade family, as are its close cousins tobacco, potatoes, aubergine, chili peppers and the poisonous belladonna.
More and more varieties in the shops, heirloom and colourful in all sizes, we are so fortunate to have ALL that choice!
We can now buy "tomatoes on the vine", which are ripened or harvested with the fruits still connected to a piece of vine. These tend to have more flavour than artificially ripened tomatoes.
Botanically, a tomato is the ovary, together with its seeds, of a flowering plant: therefore it is a fruit or, more precisely, a berry... NOT a vegetable.

Named after the Greek god of wind, Aeolus – Acoustic Wind Pavilion is a giant instrument and optical sculpture, crafted by Luke Jerram.
It was singing away in Canary Wharf, Aeolus allows wind to resonate through polished steel tubes and along vibrating strings attached to the tubes.
The hum produced is attuned to the aeolian scale and registers even in the lowest of winds, creating a soundscape of the environment throughout the day.
The pavilion itself is a remarkable feat of elegant engineering as each protrusion reflects the sky light to the centre of the harp-like structure combining the particular nuances of light and sound into a quite beautiful and situationally unique performance.

Ornithogalum dubium, common names sun star or star of Bethlehem, is a species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae.
It is a South African endemic.
Ornithogalum is derived from the Greek words ornis meaning 'bird' and gala meaning 'milk'.
Ornithogalum species are known to be poisonous.

Lisianthus are also known as Texas Bluebells, Prairie Gentian, or Lira de San Pedro.
Just opened, a small bud, white and purple just on the lips.
Eustoma stems from the Greek words 'eu', which denotes something beautiful, and 'stoma', meaning mouth. Lisianthus on the other hand comes from the Greek words 'lysis', which translates as 'dissolution', and 'anthos', meaning flower.
Symbolising gratefulness and charisma, this beautiful long stemmed flower in cymes makes a perfect bouquet when wanting to show respect, love, acceptance, and acknowledgement.

Three white Peony opened in full beauty, strutting her stuff...
A joy for all the senses again.
WE are in the Peony season once more.
The Japanese protect the earliest peony blooms from the snow by protecting them with individual small thatched shelters. Some geishas used to wear special peony colours.
With their lush, full, rounded bloom, peonies embody romance and prosperity and are regarded as an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage.
The Chinese name for peony is "sho yu" which means "most beautiful" and they idolised this flower.
The common thread is that the flower always denotes luxury and indulgence.

Since Iris is the Greek goddess for the Messenger of Love, her sacred flower is considered the symbol of communication and messages.
Therefore the flower iris in the language of flowers symbolises eloquence.
A purple iris is symbolic of wisdom and compliments.
A blue iris symbolises faith and hope.
A yellow iris symbolises passion while white iris symbolises purity.
As you can see, the gift of iris can be used to convey many emotions.
Dutch irises are hybrids of two older varieties, giving it a look all its own.
The distinctive ‘fleur-de-lis' flowers come in a variety of blues, yellows, purples, and white.
Organic, sensual, all about shape and colour.
The Iris is just born elegance... extremely ephemeral, they barely last a few days, yet with unbelievable beauty and style.
Best to leave them in the garden... like so many of the bulbs!

I rediscovered this picture in my computer archives and was thinking about what I liked and didn't like about it. While I did like original version of this scary image a lot I wanted to finesse the editing.
Purple is a colour intermediate between blue and red.
It is similar to violet, but unlike violet, which is a spectral colour with its own wavelength on the visible spectrum of light, purple is a composite colour made by combining red and blue.
According to surveys in Europe and the U.S., purple is the colour most often associated with royalty, magic, mystery, and piety.
When combined with pink, it is associated with eroticism, femininity, and seduction.

Similarly in Japan, the colour is traditionally associated with the Emperor and aristocracy.
The deep, rich purple dye made from a sea snail called the spiny dye-murex became known as Tyrian purple.
The process of making the dye was long, difficult and expensive. Thousands of the tiny snails had to be found, their shells cracked, the snail removed.
Mountains of empty shells have been found at the ancient sites of Sidon and Tyre.
The snails were left to soak, then a tiny gland was removed and the juice extracted and put in a basin, which was placed in the sunlight. There a remarkable transformation took place.
In the sunlight the juice turned white, then yellow-green, then green, then violet, then a red which turned darker and darker.
The process had to be stopped at exactly the right time to obtain the desired colour, which could range from a bright crimson to a dark purple.
Then either wool, linen or silk would be dyed. The exact hue varied, but it was always rich, bright and lasting.

In The Beginning...
Every woman who has been pregnant still carries cells from her fetus within her bloodstream. Cells from the pregnancy will reside within the mother’s bloodstream and organs for the rest of her life. Even if the pregnancy was terminated or if there was a miscarriage these said genes would remain with the Mother. There is a name for this so-called condition, it is called microchimerism , which is named after the Greek chimera, a mythical, monstrous fire-breathing animal that is composed of the parts of three animals : a lion, a snake and a goat.

The straight vertical line marks the peak, with this historical graph showing the growth of, say, the underlying concrete on the left and its slower decline out to the right. Conceptual art, it might be called. Itleaves open the question of whether concrete is replaced here with something better or disappears along with everything else humans invented, although of course, sooner or later everything does disappear.

The peony is the only genus in the flowering plant family Paeoniaceae. They are native to Asia, Southern Europe and western North America but grow very well here too, Peonies are actually very easy to grow; once established they can tolerate drought and suffer from very few diseases.
Colours range from pure white through baby pinks and palest peaches to clear deep pink and darkest rich maroon. There is also a pale yellow but it is rare.
Peonies are only available between late May and early July, so get them while you can!
They are very thirsty flowers, so make sure you top up the vase or bowl.
The Greeks believed they could cure over 20 ailments and were found in every monastery garden.
Peonies have been cultivated for over 2,000 years, more for their medicinal qualities than for ornament.

Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamins C and K as well as providing a good dose of fibre, folic acid, manganese and potassium.
They also contain significant amounts of phytonutrients and flavonoids which makes strawberries bright red.
FUN FACTS on this lovely fruit:
*Despite their name, strawberries aren't technically berries—they're accessory fruits and as we're getting technical, berries should have seeds inside.
*Strawberries are really in a group of their own since they don't come from a single ovary.
*There are 200 seeds on an average strawberry.
*Plus, they're the only fruit to wear their seeds on the outside.
*Strawberries are the first fruit to ripen each spring.
*Ancient Romans believed strawberries had medicinal powers. They were used to treat everything from depression to fever and sore throats.
*Native Americans were also among the earliest people to eat strawberries. They even introduced European settlers to the fruit.
*Not only can you safely eat strawberries if you have diabetes, but in fact you are encouraged to do so.

The Emotional Impact of Flowers Study was published in the April 2005 issue of Evolutionary Psychology.
Harvard: Living with Flowers Strengthens Feelings of Compassion, and Decreases Anxiety and Worry
With people’s desire for tranquility and stress relief stronger than ever, fresh research takes an insightful look at flowers and the important role they may play in our daily lives.
A behavioural research study conducted by Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, reveals that people feel more compassionate toward others, have less worry and anxiety, and feel less depressed when fresh cut flowers are present in the home.
“Other research has proven that flowers make people happy when they receive them,” Etcoff says.
The Home Ecology of Flowers Study at Harvard uncovered three main findings:
*Flowers feed compassion.
Study participants who lived with fresh cut flowers for less than a week felt an increase in feelings of compassion and kindness for others.
*Flowers chase away anxieties, worries and the blues at home.
Overall, people in the study simply felt less negative after being around flowers at home for just a few days.
Participants most frequently placed flowers in their kitchens, dining rooms and living rooms, where they spend a lot of time at home. They reported wanting to see the blooms first thing in the morning.
*Living with flowers can provide a boost of energy, happiness and enthusiasm at work.
Having flowers at home can have a positive carry-over impact on our mood at work, too. The study found that people were more likely to feel happier and have more enthusiasm and energy at work when flowers were in their home living environments.
“As a psychologist, I’m particularly intrigued to find that people who live with flowers report fewer episodes of anxiety and depressed feelings,” Etcoff says. “Our results suggest that flowers have a positive impact on our well being.”

I adapted the lights and reflectors for the 'Flemish School of light' again, so suits these.
It is full on the time of the DOUBLE TULIPS in the shop... at the moment, I feel they 'might' be my favourites! They are a bit capricious, Baroque, so varied in shapes, with small oddities, I have become fascinated by them, aahh, and the colours, from deep red, through textured orange to veined yellow to green.
And thad sweet honey fragrance... HMMMM, Love them.

Another new variety to be bought.
The parrot tulips are back, with all the frills, ruffles and curves. It is very much about the jagged edges.
The deeply fringed and ruffled petals of the gorgeous parrot tulip will gradually open right out to form big, bowl-shaped flowers.
Although it is unknown who first brought the tulip to Northwestern Europe, the most widely accepted story is that it was Oghier Ghislain de Busbecq, an ambassador for Emperor Ferdinand I to Suleyman the Magnificent.
According to a letter, he saw "an abundance of flowers everywhere; Narcissus, hyacinths and those in Turkish called Lale, much to our astonishment because it was almost midwinter, a season unfriendly to flowers."

Those fondant pink tinted tulips are small and very beautiful, also they have a silky shine to them... no 'easy' lighting here...

Or like someone wrote: EVERYONE "THINKS" THEY ARE A PHOTOGRAPHER? LOL
Everywhere you go, people are pointing ALL kinds of devices at everything. Phones, tablets, big and small cameras.
BUT, do they take the time to 'stand and stare'? Actually enjoy the moment? The view? Well everything IS getting very well documented that's for sure. How many photos are actually seen NOT on a screen? In print? So many questions...
It is great to see people having fun with their 'gadgets'.
However, I am a thinker... and what happens to all those images? Where-ever I go, people shove their phone under my nose, and start flicking through the hundreds of photos they took of the same subject, whether it is their children, damage on a car or, sigh, the holiday, LOL.
You are smiling eh? It happened to you too! You also remained polite? Blurry, dark, too light, skew, oh yes, seen it all eh?
Please, take a moment, think? Do NOT go for the quantity but THE QUALITY, just a brief look on the internet for a few pointers on composition will already help you a long way and give you so much pleasure in the long run!

Michael Rawling’s Elemental Series uses Film, and Found Materials at the photographs’ location to create a new type of Landscape artwork.

Tiny amounts of water, organic and mineral samples are collected at the site of the photograph, from the very landscape depicted within the picture - and chemically bonded with the film over 6-12 months => the resulting image created is more throughly representative of the visceral landscapes we really experience.

There are people who 'talk' to the flowers and plants? Me, I just 'listen' to them, I open the wrapping, they fall open on the table and tell me. It is so clear what that one was saying: ppppffft, sigh... oh dear... Shout or sing... So rich in tones!
What a few petals can tell me? LOL

This lovely branch broke off the mother plant, a sign: photograph me?
Blooms and buds, for hope and awakening.
Purple was the colour worn by Roman magistrates; it became the imperial colour worn by the rulers of the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, and later by Roman Catholic bishops.
Similarly in Japan, the colour is traditionally associated with the Emperor and aristocracy.
Phalaenopsis Orchid, known as the Moth Orchid, abbreviated Phal in the horticultural trade, is an orchid genus of approximately 60 species.
Phalaenopsis is one of the most popular orchids in the trade, through the development of many artificial hybrids.
It is native to southern China, the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia (Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.), New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and Queensland.
They bloom in their full glory for several weeks. If kept in the home, the flowers may last two to three months.

A metaphor, 2019 as the bud of a flower!
Full of PROMISE of all things good.
Petal after petal, layer after layer, day after day, week after week, it opens... with ups and downs, sunshine and rain, warm and cold!
Get through the 'lesser' days and enjoy the 'better' days, it is like fighting through the storms and then basking in the warm sunshine.
I hope 2019 brings a LOT of SUN for you, beautiful flowers and PEACE.

Gerbera is a genus of ornamental plants from the sunflower family. It was named in honour of the German naturalist Traugott Gerber.
It has approximately 30 species in the wild, extending to South America, Africa and tropical Asia.
Colours include white, yellow, orange, red, and pink. The center of the flower is sometimes black.
It is the fifth most used cut flower in the world (after rose, carnation, chrysanthemum, and tulip).

A beautiful dark bloom and two majestic buds, slowly starting to unfurl: PEONIES.
The peony is the only genus in the flowering plant family Paeoniaceae.
They are native to Asia, Southern Europe and western North America but grow very well here too, Peonies are actually very easy to grow; once established they can tolerate drought and suffer from very few diseases.
Colours range from pure white through baby pinks and palest peaches to clear deep pink and darkest rich maroon. There is also a pale yellow but it is rare.
Peonies are only available between late May and early July, so get them while you can!
hey are very thirsty flowers, so make sure you top up the vase or bowl.
The Greeks believed they could cure over 20 ailments and were found in every monastery garden.
Peonies have been cultivated for over 2,000 years, more for their medicinal qualities than for ornament.
The Japanese protect the earliest peony blooms from the snow by protecting them with individual small thatched shelters. Some geishas used to wear special peony colours.
The Chinese name for peony is "sho yu" which means "most beautiful" and they idolised this flower.
The common thread is that the flower always denotes luxury and indulgence.
I again tried to photograph them with lots of charm and detail!

How do I do this??
Minute amounts of water, windfall samples - organic and mineral - are collected from the very landscape depicted within each picture - and chemically bonded with the film over 12 months. The result: a developed film and unedited, printed images that are somewhere between a classic photographs & a totally abstract image, depicting the interaction between fundamental chemical elements present at each place & time, representing a more visceral and literal experience of being present in landscapes in a constant state of natural or unnatural flux.
