Paysage d'hiver snapped in 2012 on the Danube-Tisza-Danube canal in my hometown, Kula, Vojvodina, Serbia.

At 11:56 AM on Friday, November 1st 2024, the concrete canopy above the main entrance of the Novi Sad Railway Station (Vojvodina, Serbia), weighing 272 metric tons, collapsed, crushing 14 people dead on the spot and 1 passing away 17 days after in the hospital.
The whole building was just renovated as part of the Chinese 'Belt and Road' initiative (renewal of the railway tracks from Belgrade to Subotica). The collapsing roof is a result of a failed reconstruction process conducted by the Chinese investors CRIC-CCCC (China Railway International Company along with China Communications Construction Company).
Both the Chinese investors and Serbian government officials, ministers (from the ruling SNS - Srpska Napredna Stranka - Serbian Progressive Party and it's coalition partner SPS - Socijalistička Partija Srbije - Socialist Party of Serbia, including the Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure - Goran Vesić, the Minister of Internal Affairs - Ivica Dačić and the President Aleksandar Vučić) deny the fact that the suspended roof was renovated along with the whole station building. Spite there are visual proofs one can find on the web proving the opposite. They try to wash their hands and not take any responsibility at all for this tragedy. Their mantra in the state media is that the roof collapsed "as it was old, built in 1964". OK, let's take your claim as true - why the heck you did not renovated the roof when everything else was renovated?!
The President and the officials say "all responsible for the tragedy will be processed and sentenced". In Serbia. Where everything is corrupt. And you can get away with everything, even with negligent homicide, if you are a member or a buddy of the ruling political parties, SNS and SPS...
14 people (11/17 update: the 15th victim, Anja (23) a student of Chinese (how ironic) and a basketball player, who had her both arms amputated after the collapse, died in the hospital after 17 days), including two girls age 5 and 9 with their grandpa, two high-school students, age 16 and 17, a young couple barely over 20, mothers, fathers, grandparents lost their lives while waiting for their train or suburban bus, looking forward to get home to see their loved ones. They were crushed to death in a second due to such massive neglect.
After the 3 days of mourning in the province of Vojvodina, sadly, nothing will change, the majority of the people will "sell themselves" for 20 Euro to vote further on for the SNS and SPS (look up the "Bulgarian Train" voting fraud system on the web).
It is hard to be an optimist in Serbia, no wonder the youth and intellectuals are leaving the country en masse. Myself included.
Rest In Peace Sara (5), Valentina (9), Milica (16), Nemanja (17), Anđela (20), Miloš (21), Anja (23), Stefan (27), Sanja (35), Vasko (45 - citizen of North Macedonia), Đorđe (53), Goranka (58), Vukašin (69), Mileva (76), Đuro (77)
You did not deserved such horrible faith...
"When all is withered and torn
And all has perished and fallen
These great wooden doors shall remain closed
When the heart is a grave filled with blood
And the soul is a cold and haunted shall of lost hope
When the voice of pride has been silenced
And dignity's fires are but cinders
Their grandeur shall remain untainted
It is this grandeur that protects the spirit within
From the plight of this broken world, from the wounds in her song
I wish to die with my will and spirit intact
The will that inspired me to write these words
Seek not the fallen to unlock these wooden doors"
