Compositing Photography by Frank Living©

Model: Alia Gonzalez taken in a Joel Grimes Workshop

Digital Photography: Composite images created of scans and photographs.

Friday, Chad and Jeff attended an advanced composite fabrication workshop at the Kreysler & Associates manufacturing facility near Vallejo, California. The day started with a broad overview of composite technology and its applications for architecture. Attendees were then taken on a tour of the facility and watched demonstrations of carbon fiber being infused with resin by vacuum and closed-mold methods. At the time of the tour, the facility was being used to produce the cladding for SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art)’s new expansion, designed by Snøhetta, and participants witnessed each stage of the fabrication process for the unique panel system. We are excited by the possibilities and potential uses of this strong and lightweight material because is stronger and lighter than steel and comes in any color, texture, shape, or size.

A composite image of three photos. I was trying to bring out some of the cloud detail in this rapidly expanding thunderhead.

Composite of several images I took at the Skogafoss Waterfall in Southern Iceland

Here's another composite image done with the help of my friend Evan. This is something we're trying to perfect. These images are very labor intensive. Every component of the photograph is lit with a flash or flashlight. They will often consist of over 50 layer masks in Photoshop. We are constantly impressed with the results. The lighting effects become surreal and the car often ends up looking like it was photographed with very expensive studio lighting.

I'm looking forward to trying this technique with a snow covered night scene.

ENVE / CARBON SEATPOST

This is a composite. I put this one together from the environment you will find in the next photo.

Students are in the initial stages of building a newly designed kayaks. They'll sand the plugs before the molds are infused with resin.

Composites research focuses on developing highly engineered building products from low-value materials for production of wood-or natural-fiber based composites as well as wood-plastic composites.

I thought the unique pattern of this composite siding on the side of this old garage in Taylor Ridge,IL made for an interesting shot.

Composite of exposures; 1.3s @ ISO 1600 for lunar disk and 25s @ ISO 1600 for the background stars. Processed in GIMP, some faint stars surrounding the moon were removed when erasing the glow, but otherwise, this pretty well approximates the view as seen through a telescope or binoculars. Camera was a Fuji X-M1 attached to Skywatcher Equinox 80ED with an Orion 0.8x focal reducer/field flattener.

This patch was used by the United States Army's 5307th Composite Unit from 1943-1944.

With photographs of your site, we can create composites of your future building in its exact location, right down to the street corner. With this, you can visualize exactly how your building will look in its future location.

Composite imagery can be fun... Next time I'm adding a 'Stache! Even photos want their own special ice cream bar creation!
