This dam, constructed across Bhutahi Balan, is a typical example of the earth bunds that are constructed for controlled flood irrigation
May 2007 and we had two out of 541 of Bill Birketts named tops to climb to complete the lot. Every named top over a 1000ft in the Lakes national park is on the list. We decided to tackle them after finishing the Wainwrights for the first time. The problem was that our last one was Pillar rock. Some suggest it’s a rock climb others a dangerous scramble, a lot depends on the conditions.
We drove up to Ennerdale early on Saturday and headed for Lingmell ( the one in Ennerdale) our next to last Birkett. From here we moved onto the ridge to Steeple, a path we hadn’t used before but we should have, a really interesting way to a great top. On to Scoat Fell, Black Crag and then Pillar – the parent of Pillar Rock. I had told Jayne that we were just checking it out with a view to employing a guide to lead us up it. As ever with these things you need to be 100 % sure of the route, which is easier said than done. After a sandwich we made our way down. As luck would have it two climbers were on their way down and we were able to watch and get advice. Conditions were perfect so I dropped my bag and made my way up the difficult part to check it out. We using the Slab and Notch route, the climb isn’t hard but the consequence of a slip are fatal. As with Broad Stand on Sca Fell, it’s the exposure and the consequence of a simple slip that causes the problem.
I climbed back down and was very confident that I could take Jayne safely up – and back! Her face was a picture as she reached the top. We sat and savoured it for quite a while – the Birketts completed. There are places where people abseil down bur we were going down the way we came. We made our way down below the western face of Pillar Rock, there were a couple of climbers, red specks, going up the hard way. A twelve mile walk with a bit of scrambling thrown in. Mission accomplished.
On Sunday we did a 15 miler around the Eastern Fells then on Monday we went to Glenridding to tackle Helvellyn – on a bank holiday weekend! We went over Birkhouse Moor, down to Red Tarn, up to Catstycam, Swirral Edge to Helvellyn. We made our way North over the Dodds, ticked a few tops off again and back to Keppel Cove and Greenside. A 12.5 mile day. The photos from this weekend aren’t that good, I used the Ricoh GRD and got plenty of blown highlights to show for it, more of a record of a great walking weekend.
All of the rows are done! It's amazing how much better things come together when you actually know what you're doing.

Does the smiley mean the upgrade was successful? Nothing tells me that the upgrade is even complete.
Forrest Bess (1911-1977) oil on canvas at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Written near the painting: Susan and Leonard Nimoy. Do you remember the object in the blue plane? That canvas was painted the day I felt so elated. It represented freedom—complete unattachment to me. —from an undated letter to Meyer Shapiro
Our DATAC contractors Swift Roofing have just completed this installation of a Liveroof green modular roof on a bin store at Scholar’s Court, Anerly, for Taylor Wimpey.
The store is part of a mixed housing scheme, and a green roof was chosen for its aesthetic qualities, as nearby flats overlook the area. Liveroof was the most cost effective solution, and enabled Swift Roofing to install 80m2 of green roofing in just three hours.

All of my supplies for redwork was left behind (by mistake) on my Christmas trip and just got here in the mail. It was fun to get started on these redworks.
I hope I'm not breaking any rules here but I don't see any reason why I should need to designate group 1 and group 2, in this case. If anyone wants a particular redwork that I'm working on just now, I suppose they should just say which one they want (no matter which group) and it'll be first come, first serve. There will be 6 of each chair, 6 rabbits, and 6 feathers.
Completed January 2018.
This was a relatively easy puzzle for 2000 pieces; lots of variation in colour and texture. We've done a couple of Buffalo Games puzzles recently, and although they are generally less expensive than Ravensburger and other brands, I 've found that the piece fit and quality has been quite good.
A sketch i did of a piece by one of my favourite writers! This guy has so much originality and style!! Its not my sketch just copied it from a piece!!
