Experimenting with the differences between an umbrella in shoot thru configuration vs bounce configuration. Read a really great article by Don Giannatti, aka wizwow, from Lighting Essentials that really make me thing about this, so I decided to play around with it a bit today, and am pretty amazed at the differences! You can really see that the light does wrap around more with the bounce configuration, especially noticeable on the cheek to the right on the nose line and along the inside of the eye socket. Not sure why the image to the right has the blueish cast to it, both images were taken with the same camera settings, and adjusted the same in Lightroom. Gave up trying to figure it out for now, as it was not important to this whole exercise anyway...

Strobist info:

580EX II with 30" umbrella at 1/32 power, 24 mm, positioned at 45 degrees camera left. In both cases the diffusion material was 30 inches from the nose of the Styrofoam head, with the umbrella above and at an angle so that the rod pointed directly at the nose. Camera at 1/100, f/5.6 ISO 100.

I received a request of making comparison pictures of Dollclans Vezeto on the Resinsoul 72 cm body

Decided to compare the potential width of a wooden roadbed instead of a stone/wood combination. The wood is 120mm wide, while the gravel bed is 150 mm wide. The wood would require some vertical planks to keep any ballasting in, so it would probably be about 120+22+22=164 mm wide. That's about 100 mm narrower than the stone and gravel combination.

Nokian 26x3.0" Gazzi on Sun Double Wide Rim (45mm) vs Kenda 26x2.35" K-rad on ~25mm Mavic rim

This photo give you a sense of scale.

For this photo, I moved the lights a little closer together, and adjusted the exposure so they could actually be seen.

My newest light is at left. The triple-beamed one at right is the oldest of these; I bought it as a gift for my wife when she bought her first car, back in 2006. All four flashlights have new batteries in them. So I guess the new one lived up to its claim.

From left to right:

1.Pocket Fairy Minimay, at least 1 year old (bought in October 2013 from Think Pink).

2. Lati Yellow Suji, 1 year old (arrived from Lati in September 2013).

3. Pukipuki Pongpong, 3 years old (arrived from Fairyland in September 2011).

4. Imda Timp Yuja, new (arrived from Soom in October 2014).

Yuja has lightest pinkish skin, pukipuki is darker and a little bit yellowed. Pocket Fairy does not look yellowed at all, and Lati Yellow arrived from Lati as yellow as she is now.

Here's the comparison

A decent drawing of Tiger against a photo of our model - just to compare proportions. Not too bad, methinks.

iPhone 4s camera compared to Nikon D200 with Nikkor 17-55 f2.8 dx lens.

I KNOW it's not really fair and that it's "just a phone", but its still worth comparing to see what the quality is really like rather than just saying "OMG it's 8mp and it's an iPhone so therefore it's awesome!!!!" Megapixels are not everything and don't tell the whole story by a long shot.

This isn't a perfect comparison with precise accuracy but it's close and gives an idea of how good (and bad) the iPhone 4s camera really is. View the largest size to see the details.

Generally I see a LOT more digital noise from the iPhone and highlights are often blown out. This is probably a decision Apple made due to user input. (I sure wish the built-in camera app had exposure compensation!!)

Overall though, this tiny little camera isn't bad and a few generations down the road it'll be pretty amazing.

Carried out a crude comparison of the top 2 compacts in the bridge class by just trying them out at Jessops in Stockport and John Lewiss in Cheadle.

At the end of the day, I want to choose the one that's going to provide the most pleasing pictures for me.

This collection of images is organised as follows:-

10 shots taken with LX3 at John Lewiss, Cheadle.

4 shots taken with LX3 on macro setting, at John Lewiss, Cheadle.

6 shots taken with g10 at John Lewiss, Cheadle.

3 shots taken with g10 on macro setting, at John Lewiss, Cheadle.

3 shots taken with LX3 at Jessops, Stockport.

2 shots taken with LX3 on macro setting, at Jessops, Stockport.

6 shots taken with g10 at Jessops, Stockport.

3 shots taken with g10 on macro setting, at Jessops, Stockport.

The LX3 won hands down! No contest! The reason: Fast f2.0 lens and superior sensor made it possible to choose lower iso's thus giving me better shots for the given conditions. For snapping, I won't have control of lighting so the LX3 is going to give me better snaps.

Visibly crisper images. Higher dynamic range and more vibrant colours produced by the in camera DSP.

Also, g10 really struggled to focus at macro setting (see images later on).

g10 also gave a more washed out appearance in it's images.

Take a look for yourself through this collection and see if you agree.

Footnote:

JL failed to price match so I ended up buying the LX3 from Jessops. They are currently offering a 10% discount (Dec 2008) making the retail purchase from Jessops, cheaper than any offer I could find online. Jessops customer service has been superb and I recommend you buy frorm them for this reason as well as because you can be sure you will be getting the official EU version of the LX3 wich appears to be inferior to the version available in the rest of the world only because they have had to put in a restriction on video recording length to 15mins in order to satify EU legislation which would have forced them to market the camera as a movie recorder otherwise.

Have been going trigger happy with my new toy and will be posting all my shots here soon. Watch this space!

Razor A5 vs Xootr Mg

Xootr is a good 5 inches taller. It is also variably adjustable in height (which the Razor is not... it's either short or it's full out).

You can see the difference in deck size as well. Other pictures in this set show how much larger the Razor A5 is compared to the regular Razor scooters. The Xootr is positively huge in comparison to A2 and A1 scooters.

Playfully Plaid, has no eye lids, cannot bend the knees, but she can turn and tilt her head and move her legs.

Rosey Red Keychain has no eyelids and cannot bend her knees or move her legs.

After looking at them closely, I kinda like my Playfully plaid girl better! I just love her big eyes and how the lashes look on pics! I dont really care for the lids.

Have added some comparison photos on my blog of a Dolls Be With You 1/6 BJD with a Fairyland Littlefee.

And here are some comparisons to Live Action Christie since I find her to be interesting as the only Midge sculpt in dark vinyl.

Also I keep reading how everyone thinks ALL vintage Christie dolls used a recoloured Midge head, when Midge has a much bigger mouth in comparison to Julia/Christie as well as a different jawline. Comparing them side by side I can see how they modified the Midge sculpt to turn into Christie (the nose and eye sculpts give it away) but I think it’s different enough to not call it a direct Midge recolour.

Pixel-peep Large On Black

Note that the 2x shots are definitely waaaay less sharp. This is probably a combination of factors, including the slower shutter speed and greater difficulty of precise focus, as well as some optical degradation from the extra glass itself.

I'll keep practicing with the focus and steady shooting hands necessary to wield this thing, and hopefully you'll see some cleaner shots soon.
