he Kishanganj block of Baran ADP, Rajasthan, is a dry drought-prone area. The farmers in this area often faced crop failure due to water scarcity. With the majority of the people being dependent on agriculture for livelihood, the low yield and crop failure led to serious debts.
The decreasing ground water level made the fields unfavorable for cultivation.
To address this issue, Baran ADP has been organizing the farmers through formation of the Farmers Association in communities to enhance the knowledge on new techniques. In partnership with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (An Agriculture Research Institute), the ADP also focuses on teaching people new agriculture techniques/practices and conserving rain water by constructing check-dams and digging of ponds, desalting of check-dams, renovation of ponds etc.
In Karvari Kalan, where there were heavy losses in agriculture in the past years, the farmers have benefitted through digging of farm ponds. Poor and vulnerable families are engaged in creating such structures under the food for work/cash for work program to ensure food security in their households. These interventions have contributed to the physical and economic well-being of the poor and vulnerable people.
