Renuka still remembers imagining herself as a teacher in a good school. Nothing quite wrong with that! Except that Renuka was born to a poor family. She was forced to take up a job at an age of 12 when most youngsters would still be in school.

That put an end to all her dreams and aspirations. As a daily-wage labourer, Renuka’s father, Pujari Suresh, brought home earnings too meager to feed the family. The family had forgone meals several times. When daily food was a struggle, needless to say continuing Renuka’s education seemed an unnecessary expenditure for her struggling family.

Renuka began working as a daily wage labourer to support the family. Moreover, she also helped her mother in household works. Her future held nothing promising for her. Deep down, she believed her dreams would never come true. If only she knew, a miracle was awaiting her.

It was at this critical situation, a kind-hearted person sponsored Renuka, eradicating her fears about the future. The staff at World Vision counseled her parents towards sending Renuka to school. Things were not easy as her parents were not willing to let go an additional earning hand. But through constant counseling and encouragement, her parents finally persuaded to send her to school. They realized the worth of education.

Today, Renuka is back in school. She is studying 7th grade and is hopeful of becoming a teacher one day.

“I am thankful to World Vision for the timely intervention,” says Renuka with smile, “If not for my sponsor, I would never have had a chance to get back to school.”

However, there are thousands of children like Renuka who do not have anybody to believe in their dreams and give them a chance to realize them. Poverty robs their future until someone intervenes.
