Female Common Duiker, Grootfontein district, Otjozondjupa - Namibia
The Common Duiker also known as the Gray Duiker or Bush Duiker, is a small antelope. It grows to about 50 cm in height and weighs 15 to 25 kg.
They do not occur in forests, although they will take refuge in forests when hiding from a predator. Widely distributed in Southern Africa but absent from desert regions.
The Common Duiker is usually seen at dawn and dusk in open scrub country.
Individual milkweed flowers are sometimes not really noticed because they are part of the larger round cluster of flowers, but for some reason I ran across a plant where one of the flowers seemed to be pushing the others for dominance.

'I SEE YOUR TRUE COLOURS SHINING THROUGH.'
This female showed at her best when she perched on top of a Hawthorn hedge. In better light, she showed her true colours and I could better appreciate the amount of brown feathers on her crown, nape and ear coverts.

The Common Tern drinks on the wing, dipping its bill in the water with its wings held up. They can drink saltwater or freshwater—like many seabirds, they have nasal glands that excrete excess salt.
The male Common Mormon has one consistent appearance. The famale comes in several dramatically different forms. Some female forms mimic poisonous butterflies, such as the Common Rose, to discourage predators. As odd as it may seem, at the time the butterfly was named, the Victorian naturalists were reminded of the practice of polygamy associated with the LDS Church at that time. So they coined the name "Common Mormon."
Large duck with a sleek body and thin red bill. Breeding males have a dark green head and mostly white body with peachy blush on underparts. Females and immature males have rusty brown head and gray bodies with a cleanly demarcated white throat. Feeds in rivers, lakes, and large ponds by diving to catch fish. Hardy in winter, often staying as far north as open water permits.

The Common Yellowthroat was one of the first bird species to be catalogued from the New World, when a specimen from Maryland was described by Linnaeus in 1766.

'CLOSE SCRUTINY ... FROM US BOTH.'
Looking striking in crisp black and white breeding plumage, this male Eider came close inshore. I'd watched it diving for food repeatedly as it had advanced to where I lay.
In this image I was being stared at directly, before he dived again and veered away.

I eventually found some common blues this spring last week. Quite a few were looking quite old so they must have been around a little while they just managed to avoid me!
