A female Common Blue resting on a grass seed head on the North Downs.

I certainly did not expect to see a merganser cruising the crystal clear waters of Lake Tahoe, but here she is. We came upon her sleeping on a beach area. A crow startled her and she slipped into the water to resume her napping. Eventually, she did the routine - a little preening, drinking that fresh water, and finally off to fish. She was all alone. I don't know if she missed the flight. But it was a lovely afternoon for a cruise I guess.

Its range covers much of North America and some of Central America. Its habitat is open areas with low vegetation and some bare ground. Adult butterflies feed on flowers with certain pollinator cues: yellow flowers that are 'pre-change', or flowers whose color has not been changed due to insect visitation or other factors. Their wingspan is typically between 2 and 2.5 inches (5 - 6.5 cm).

A Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus tinnunculus) flies above me as I return home after spending a day at the 2023 RAF Cosford Air Show.

I'd spent all day photographing aircraft and to be honest, in the challenging conditions, I was more pleased with how this image came out!

Despite international legislation protecting the common tern, in some areas, populations are threatened by habitat loss, pollution, or the disturbance of breeding colonies.
