A flock of Common Terns were hovering over the shallow part of the beach feeding on a school of fish, I positioned underneath the hovering Terns to get this shot.

The Whitethroat (also known as the common whitethroat, Curruca communis) is a lively, medium-sized warbler known for its energetic "scratchy" song and distinctive white throat. A migratory summer visitor to the UK, it typically arrives from sub-Saharan Africa in mid-April and stays until September.
Physical Appearance
Male:
Notable for a blue-grey head "cap," a bright white throat, and a pinkish-buff breast.
Female:
Duller in appearance with a brown head and an off-white throat.
Key Features:
Both sexes have long tails with white outer feathers and rich, reddish-brown (rufous) edges on their wing feathers, which helps distinguish them from the similar-looking lesser whitethroat.
Behavior and Habitat
Habitat:
It prefers open country with low cover, such as scrubland, brambles, nettles, and thick hedgerows.
Nesting:
In a unique display, males build several "cock nests" (simple twig structures) upon arrival. The female then chooses her preferred one to finish lining with hair and grass.
Song:
Their song is often described as a "fussy" or "scratchy" warble, delivered during a short, vertical song flight or from the top of a bush.
Diet:
Primarily insectivorous during the breeding season, they switch to berries in the autumn to build fat reserves for migration.
Conservation and History
The species is currently on the UK Green List, reflecting a stable population recovery. However, it famously suffered a catastrophic 70-90% population crash in 1968-1969 due to extreme drought in its African wintering grounds (the Sahel), a major event in ornithological history.
A thriving group of Common Bonnets (Mycena galericulata) covered a thick fallen tree branch all over. This is a widespread species of fungi belonging to a big Mycena family. The genus name “Mycena” originates from the ancient Greek work” mykes” meaning “fungus”. The scientific epithet “galericulata” comes from the Latin word ‘galer’ which is be translated as ‘helmet’ or ‘hat’. If you compare its small cap with the length of the stem it sits on – it is indeed an elegant ‘fungus with a small hat’. Their appearance also reflected in other names like the ‘helmeted high-stool’, the ‘togue mycena’, and the ‘rosy-gill fairy helmet’. Thursley Common, Surrey. aka Colin - now back for his 9th year, making him the oldest known cuckoo. Had just the one visit though he stopped around for 30 minutes to pose for his audience of around 25 and have a good scoff. Things seem to have moved on for him a bit - only live mealworms now and some real designer perches - hollowed out fencepost tops filled with his favourite grubs. He deserves the best.
