The adult Common Loon was part of a small group of migrants that were passing through. There were a few adults and juveniles that were spotted in the same area.

This little Warbler is truly very common to see. The birds we saw at the park were hanging around in the tall grasses of the marsh which made it a fun challenge to try to photograph them. We had to find a line of sight through the reeds to get a clear shot of them and then deal with a breeze that gently rocked the birds or waved another blade of grass in front of him again. With the breezes we sometimes had shadows come across the bird intermittently. Thankfully, we had a few days to keep going back to get it right. The front of this bird is quite noticeable with his yellow throat and masked eyes. If he shows his back, he’s not as quick to be noticed. But then he sings and there is not mistaking who he is. This was a good challenge and a real exercise in patience.

Although its behaviour is warbler-like, this is actually part of the Vanga family and the most widely distributed of the 4 Newtonia species, all being endemic to Madagascar.

Note the flexible nature of the bill which allows it to better feel and grasp prey items in the water.

I spent the past week north of Huntsville Ontario at a cottage on Loon Lake. With a pair of nesting loons not far away, I would have to say the lake was aptly titled. I would have to say that the Loon is one of my favourite birds. I just love their feather pattern, their deep red eyes and their beautiful call.

A couple mornings while there I headed out on the kayak with camera in tow (praying all the while that I didn't upend myself) and headed out to where the loons were nesting. Saturday morning turned out to be the nicest day by far as the sky was clear and the lake was as smooth as glass.

Here is the first shot from that trip...Hope you enjoy.

The common starling (sturnus vilgaris) has iridescent plumage that is not to visible against the palo verde blossoms. Captured at the beautiful Gilbert Water Ranch, a great place for birding. The starling was raucous and ruffled over my intrusion.

As always, thanks so much for stopping by.
