Little Pied Cormorant
Scientific Name: Microcarbo melanoleucos
Description: The Little Pied Cormorant is one of the most common of Australia's waterbirds, occurring on water bodies of almost any size. It is entirely black above and white below. The face is dusky and, in adult birds, the white of the underside extends to above the eye. Immature birds resemble the adults except there is no white above the eye.
Similar species: The Little Pied Cormorant resembles the Pied Cormorant,Phalacrocorax varius, but is easily distinguished by its smaller size and proportionately shorter bill The Pied Cormorant also has an orange-yellow face patch and black thighs.
Distribution: The Little Pied Cormorant is found throughout Australia.
Habitat: The Little Pied Cormorant is at home in either fresh or salt water. It is often seen in large flocks on open waterways and on the coast, especially where large numbers of fish are present. On inland streams and dams, however, it is often solitary. The Little Pied Cormorant mixes readily with the similar sized Little Black Cormorant, P. sulcirostris.
Feeding: Little Pied Cormorants feed on a wide variety of aquatic animals, from insects to fish. On inland streams and dams they turn to their most favoured food: yabbies (freshwater crayfish). These are caught by deep underwater dives with both feet kicking outward in unison. Other crustaceans are also taken, with shrimps being a large part of their diet in winter months.
Breeding: Little Pied Cormorants breed either in colonies or, less commonly, in single pairs. The nest is a flat platform of sticks, lined with green leaves and is usually placed in a tree. Both adults share in egg incubation and care of the young.
Minimum Size: 50cm
Maximum Size: 66cm
Average size: 58cm
Clutch Size: 3 to 4

Square-tailed Kite
Scientific Name: Lophoictinia isura
Although it usually occurs singly, the Square-tailed Kite is sometimes seen soaring in pairs during the breeding season, and family groups of adults and one or two dependent young may be seen during post-fledging period. The Square-tailed Kite usually hunts by flying low over the treetops, occasionally plunging down through the foliage to snatch a bird or insect from among the leaves or twigs. The species often eats the nestlings of birds, and sometimes it will remove the entire nest to get at the young birds, and at other times may remove the tiny birds, one clutched tightly by the talons of each foot. They also catch adult birds by surprising them in the canopy of the forest.
Description: Often solitary, but can be seen in pairs when nesting. Squared-tailed Kites have a long, square tail with very long, upswept paddle-shaped wings and a large cream crescent at the base of their wing tips.
Similar Species: Immature Black Kite, Black-breasted Buzzard, and Red Goshawk
Distribution: Endemic to mainland Australia.
Habitat: The species mainly inhabits open eucalypt forests and woodlands, often where there is a broken canopy, but it also ranges into nearby open habitats. In southern Australia, Square-tailed Kites mainly inhabit open eucalypt forests and woodlands, often dominated by stringybarks, peppermints or box–ironbark eucalypts, as well as Woollybutt, Spotted Gum, Manna Gum, Messmate, River Red Gums, as well as other trees such as Angophora, cypress-pines and casuarinas. It also occurs along the edges of dense forest and along in road verges with remnant or planted trees, and in clearings within forest or in areas of regrowth, up to 4 years after the area has been logged. Other habitats which occasionally support Square-tailed Kites include mallee, heathland (mallee or coastal) and other low shrublands including saltbush plains, and also grasslands or open or cultivated farmland near remnant woodland.
Feeding: Searching for prey from the air, where they are highly agile at low levels, they mainly hunt in eucalypt open forest or woodland, and less often in low shrublands, heath, grassland or crops, and the margins between open and timbered country (forest–heath; woodland–heath; forest–open field; mallee–open paddocks; woodland edges; riparian timber; belts of trees in urban or semi-urban areas; and clearings in forests) are especially favoured. They specialise in hunting among trees, twisting between and below tree-tops, and they take most prey from the outer foliage of the canopy, but do not enter the canopy.
Breeding: Square-tailed Kites nest on horizontal branches in mature living trees, especially eucalypts, often near water, and they need extensive areas of forest or woodland surrounding or nearby.
Calls: Yelping, yeep, yeep, yeep. Also squealing ee ee ee ee
Minimum Size: 50cm
Maximum Size: 55cm
Average size: 53cm
Average weight: 568g

I meant to upload this a loooong time but never liked the edit. So I think I finally got it? Haha. Had to post it before autumn was over! :)
I'm listening to all the songs from Glee right now haha. I love the show even though I've only seen 1.5 episodes :P

The one with the blue cere is ♂
Budgerigar
Scientific Name: Melopsittacus undulatus
Description: Since its introduction into captivity, the Budgerigar (or 'budgie') has been bred into a variety of colour forms, including pure white, blue, yellow, mauve, olive and grey. In the wild, Budgerigars are small green and yellow parrots, with black barring above, and a small patch of blue on the cheek. The male has a dark blue cere (skin at the base of the upper mandible surrounding the nostrils). In the female this is brownish when breeding and light blue otherwise. Young Budgerigars are similar to the adult birds, but are duller and have a dark brown eye (which is white or yellow in adults).
Distribution: The Budgerigar occurs naturally throughout much of mainland Australia, but is absent from the far south-west, the north of the Northern Territory, Tasmania and the majority of the east coast.
Habitat: Budgerigars are nomadic and large flocks of birds can be seen in most open habitat types, but seldom far from water. Very large flocks, numbering occasionally in the tens of thousands, are seen after a season of abundant rainfall and food. Flocks are usually much smaller, however, and range from as few as three birds up to 100 or more. Birds in a flock fly in a characteristic undulating manner.
Seasonal movements: Nomadic.
Feeding: Budgerigars feed almost exclusively on the seeds of native herbs and grasses, such as porcupine grass and saltbush. Seeds are mostly eaten from the ground and the bulk of drinking and feeding activity is in the morning.
Breeding: Budgerigars tend to breed in response to rainfall, and may produce several broods if conditions permit. The nest is a bare cavity in a suitable tree branch or in the trunk. The female sits on the round white eggs. As with other parrots, young budgerigars are born naked and helpless.
Calls: The contact call is a warbling "chirrup"; "zit" is given in alarm.
Minimum Size: 17cm
Maximum Size: 18cm
Average size: 18cm
Average weight: 28g
Breeding season: Any time of year when conditions suitable
Clutch Size: 6 to 8 eggs
Nestling Period: 35 days

PLEASE COMMENT IF YOU FAVE
So, I have a bunch of last ditch posts to make before November starts.

Red and Black figs!
Here we go.
LtR
Black Widow:
She is an updated version of the one seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/142100445@N08/26842522240/in/album-...
Since that one, I changed the head, Added some leg detail, and painted on some metallic silver and flesh details.
Overall, I'm super happy with the update.
Daredevil Year One:
This guy is a Mash of all sorts of figs I've made.
The beanie is from My Reaper fig. The head is from himself (www.flickr.com/photos/142100445@N08/27827290650/in/datepo...). Torso is Star Wars. Arms are from a Scarlet witch I did and legs are from Bucky. Overall, i like the combos.
Iron Fist: Hair is from Luke Skywalker. I painted the head, but I don't remember what it was originally. All of the torso is by me. Hands are wrapped in labels and the legs are from Star-Lord.
10/10 for this bunch In my opinion!

Thanks to everyone who took the trouble to view, comment or fave.
Thanks to Flickr I was made aware of this place this year.
Since then I've seen it in books too - so I'm sorry to say it's a bit of an iconic or cliched shot which I always prefer to avoid but they keep calling to me unfortunately :(
Even though I spent many holidays in Plymouth for the first 16 years of my life & most of my summers in Devon for the last 15 years, this week was the first time I'd ever been to this spot - great how Flickr lets us see so many places through everyone else's eyes (& lenses) & inspires us to get out there & explore.
When I first saw pictures of this, the perspective made me think the post was about 18 inches high - the kind of thing you sometimes get in a garden to mark the grave of a small family pet like a hamster, guinea pig or gerbil - but it's actually very big.
Commonly known as the Windy Post this chunk of granite is around 7 feet tall but despite the misleading name the reason it is leaning is not down to the wild Dartmoor winds.
You see, Dartmoor ponies are quite poorly equipped to deal with itchiness.
Unlike human hands and fingers which are extremely sophisticated both in terms of placement and application of pressure - ponies hooves are far too unwieldy & crude for localised scratching - and of course they can't reach all over the pony's body.
The only other major tool in the pony's scratching armoury is a vigorously whipping tail action, but even this together with hooves leaves large areas unscratchable.
For this reason Dartmoor ponies have been known to rub themselves against this post to relieve any urgently itchy areas - being intelligent animals they usually rub downhill allowing gravity to apply pressure and do most of the work as they rub gently backwards and forwards.
Over the last several hundred years this has caused the post to lean downwards :)
I just managed to get here about an hour before sunset and couldn't believe my luck that there were some great clouds & crepuscular Rays appearing to highlight the post!
Shortly after this the rain came down very heavily & the sunset was very poor but was grateful for this light & reflections.
- must dash my wife has just caught me on Flickr again which means another spanking is imminent :(

My phone seems to have an issue with the Flickr app, which is annoying as things don't load and I can't comment. Or maybe the app has issues.
Anyway I will catch up on the comments later and peek at your pictures at the moments the app allows me to scroll trhough them.
Meanwhile, enjoy a bit of summer I managed to catch for you on Harry Potter's birthday.
Your comments please...which one do you prefer, this one or the previous one?

Thank you all my dears Flickr friends for your sweet comments! I do appreciate them very, very much

Over on the hill
There grows a flower
Growing quicker still
More perfect by the hour
Deep within that flower
Is a tiny chair
All a-fringed with gold
The fairy queen sits there…
It is in her breath
That the wind does blow
It is in her heart
As pure as winter snow
It is in her tears
Crystal raindrops fall
And within her years
That she is in us all…
*Oh dark eyes
Help me see
Just one look
She is gone
Look on me
We are one
Fading with the setting sun…
As the willow bows
To her majesty
All the forest flowers
Love her mystery
Who would not admire
Who could not adore
Who does not desire
Who wishes to see more?

These stunning pink lilies showcase their vibrant petals drenched in morning dew, standing gracefully among lush greenery. Their elegant stamens and budding companions hint at the season’s abundant life, while the soft tones of the garden path in the background add a natural, tranquil charm. A celebration of nature’s artistry captured in full bloom.
