Eastern Spinebill

Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris

The Eastern Spinebill sometimes hovers like a hummingbird when feeding on the nectar from flowers. Most Australian honeyeaters feed on flowers from a perched position.

Description: The Eastern Spinebill is most easily recognised by its very long, fine, down-curved beak and energetic flight, during which its white outer tail feathers are prominent. Males have a grey-black crown which extends in a black line on either site of the breast. The breast and throat are white, with a rufous patch in the centre of the throat. The wings and lower back are dark grey and the underparts and upper back are buff. Females are similar to males but have less distinct markings.

Similar species: Crescent Honeyeater, Tawny-crowned Honeyeater, Western Spinebill (in Western Australia)

Distribution: The Eastern Spinebill's range is generally east of the Great Dividing Range from Cooktown in Queensland to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia

Habitat: The Eastern Spinebill prefers heath, forest and woodland.

Seasonal movements: Largely sedentary, but undergoes some local movements, especially away from higher elevations in autumn/winter.

Feeding: The Eastern Spinebill feeds on insects and nectar while perched or while hovering. Nectar is obtained from a wide array of flowers, including grevilleas, but its beak is particularly well-suited to extracting nectar from tubular flowers such as epacrids.

Breeding: The Eastern Spinebill's nest is a small cup of twigs, grass and bark, combined with hair and spider's web, built in a tree fork, generally between 1 and 5 metres from the ground. Only the female builds the nest and incubates the eggs, but both parents feed the young when they hatch.

Calls: Short, repeated, high-pitched piping.

Minimum Size: 15cm

Maximum Size: 16cm

Average size: 16cm

Average weight: 11g

Breeding season: August to January

Clutch Size: 2

Incubation: 14 days

Nestling Period: 14 days

The Alice River in central Queensland, Australia rises on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range. It has been very dry so the river is a series of waterholes - it needs a good flush. You can see the water marks on the trees from previous flows. The river bisects the Shire of Barcaldine, flowing in a south-westerly direction towards Isisford and its confluence with the Barcoo River to form Cooper Creek. Barcaldine is located on Lagoon Creek, which flows into the Alice River approximately five kilometre s to the south. The Alice River is often dry, except after the annual summer rains.

The Barcoo River forms the boundary of outback Australia with little in the way of civilization west of the Barcoo. Waters from the Barcoo and Alice Rivers flow towards Lake Eyre in Central Australia, while rivers further east join the Murray-Darling basin and reach the sea in South Australia. In 1846, Thomas Mitchell became the first European to see the Barcoo and Alice Rivers. The Alice River was named by Mitchell and Mitchell's name was adopted for the pastoral district and for its grass, Mitchell grass. (Source: Wikipedia)

Superb Fairy-wren

Scientific Name: Malurus cyaneus

Description: Adult male Superb Fairy-wrens are among the most brightly coloured of the species, especially during the breeding season. They have rich blue and black plumage above and on the throat. The belly is grey-white and the bill is black. Females and young birds are mostly brown above with a dull red-orange area around the eye and a brown bill. Females have a pale greenish gloss, absent in young birds, on the otherwise brown tail. The legs are brown in both sexes. Males from further inland and in the south-west of the range have more blue on the back and underparts.

Similar species: Several other species of fairy-wren are found in Australia. The males of each species are quite distinct, but the females and young birds are often difficult to separate. Of the species that overlap in range with the Superb Fairy-wren, the female White-winged Fairy-wren Malurus leucopterus and Red-backed Fairy-wren M. melanocephalus lacks the chestnut colour around the eye, while the female Variegated Fairy-wren M. lamberti has a dull grey-blue wash. Both the Superb and White-winged Fairy-wrens are similar in size. The Variegated Fairy-wren is slightly larger in size and has a longer tail.

Distribution: Superb Fairy-wrens are found south of the Tropic of Capricorn through eastern Australia and Tasmania to the south-eastern corner of South Australia.

Habitat: Seen in most habitat types where suitable dense cover and low shrubs occur. They are common in urban parks and gardens, and can be seen in small social groups. These groups normally consist of one dominant male and several females and young birds.

Feeding: Superb Fairy-wrens feed on insects and other small arthropods. These are caught mostly on the ground, but may also be taken from low bushes. Feeding takes place in small social groups.

Breeding: The nest is a dome-shaped structure of grasses and other fine material. It is usually placed in a low bush and is constructed by the female. The female incubates the eggs alone, but both sexes feed the young. Other members of the group will also help with the feeding of the young.

Male Superb Fairy-wrens have been labelled as 'the least faithful birds in the world'. Females may be courted by up to 13 males in half an hour, and 76% of young are sired by males from outside the social group.

Calls: The Superb Fairy-wren gives a series of high pitched trills, which are given by both sexes. The male often extends these trills into song.

Minimum Size: 13cm

Maximum Size: 14cm

Average size: 14cm

Average weight: 10g

Clutch Size: Three to four.

I'm posting my comment on this photo a day after because I didn't want to break the magic of the pic , sadly this is the last time Holly will swim in this lake that was built to cover a dump ,( just found that out )

Since I took this pic the level of the water as lower a full 2 feet , it will soon become a mosquito infected swamp , I am shock to see the level of pollution I have discovered in my forest.

That evolution don't affect us all as human bean is sad , I really wish I could go back in time and see Canada just 500 years ago :o(

I am a little behind on my 52 week challenge, but I'm getting it done as soon as I can! I've been quite busy! I have been staying steady on my 52Frames (because it's a countdown, I have to! Or I'll break my streak.. *ohh the pressure lol*)

I'm going to catch up as soon as I can. I have to do my 52Frames soon, and it's "PORTRAIT" & extra credit is "Rembrandt Lighting" - so we'll see if I get it done with the extra credit.. but either way I'll have a portrait for them by Sunday!

I've been VERY stressed out lately too, but I've been doing A LOT of praying and self reflection, and I know that it's all going to be okay. I'm remaining positive, even though sometimes it can be VERY HARD. (No worries, I'm fine! Everything is going to work out, in the right time!)

◼ The subject for WEEK 19 on my 52 WEEK is: "END OF THE LINE"!

I took quite a few different photos that I could use for this one, however.. this sign has been in my mind ever since I heard of the subject.. I took this photo on the way home from the store, and I ended up choosing this one to use.

I really love the sign underneath, about the deaf cat.. It's so unique.

I hope that you all are doing well! I have a photo shoot to do tomorrow morning (PRODUCT PHOTOGRAPHY for an upcoming website)- I'm excited! I'll post a photo to show you guys what I come up with.. Although I'll probably have a few good ones, I'm sure!

When you enter the estate and work your way down the drive a Eucalyptus fastigata dominates the view and it's not hard to understand why with a trunk that has a 15-metre girth. This 45 metre high beauty has a span of 33 metres.

Woodlands boasts a variety of trees that are among the oldest and largest of their kind in New Zealand. There is a large variety of birds enjoying life in the Woodlands trees, including, Thrush, Fantail, Tui and more recently Kaka.

Woodlands is a unique and very beautiful historic New Zealand villa homestead and wedding venue. Built in 1872, it sits proudly in the centre of acres of stunning gardens and fertile farm land.

Identification: The Silvereye is a small bird with a conspicuous ring of white feathers around the eye and belongs to a group of birds known as white-eyes. The Silvereye shows interesting plumage variations across its range. The grey back and olive-green head and wings are found in birds through the east, while western birds have a uniformly olive-green back. Breeding birds of the east coast have yellow throats, pale buff flanks (side of the belly) and white on the undertail. Tasmanian birds have grey throats, chestnut flanks and yellow on the undertail. To complicate this, the birds in the east have regular migrations within Australia and may replace each other in their different areas for parts of the year. Birds in Western Australia have yellowish olive, rather than grey, backs

Location: Silvereyes are more common in the south-east of Australia, but their range extends from Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, through the south and south-west to about Shark Bay, Western Australia. They are also found in Tasmania.

Habitat: Urban, Woodland, Forest. Silvereyes may occur in almost any wooded habitat, especially commercial orchards and urban parks and gardens.

Habitat: The Silvereye can travel great distances during migration, with Silvereyes from the most southerly regions of Tasmania travelling all the way up to Southern Queensland. Birds are seen alone, in pairs or in small flocks during the breeding season, but form large flocks in the winter months.

Feeding: Silvereyes feed on insect prey and large amounts of fruit and nectar, making them occasional pests of commercial orchards. Birds are seen alone, in pairs or in small flocks during the breeding season, but form large flocks in the winter months.

Breeding: Silvereye pairs actively defend a small territory. The nest is a small, neatly woven cup of grasses, hair, and other fine vegetation, bound with spider web. It is placed in a horizontal tree fork up to 5m above the ground. The nest is constructed by both sexes, who both also incubate the bluish-green eggs. If conditions are suitable two to three clutches will be raised in a season.

Songs and Calls: The contact call, a thin âpsipâ, is given persistently.

Australian White Ibis (Some Australian White Ibis populations have learnt to exploit artificial foods in urban environments and are becoming pests. However, although Australian White Ibises are becoming more common in some areas, their abundance is decreasing in their natural range.)

Scientific Name: Threskiornis molucca

Description: The Australian White Ibis is identified by its almost entirely white body plumage and black head and neck. The head is featherless and its black bill is long and down-curved. During the breeding season the small patch of skin on the under-surface of the wing changes from dull pink to dark scarlet. Adult birds have a tuft of cream plumes on the base of the neck. Females differ from males by being slightly smaller, with shorter bills. Young birds are similar to adults, but have the neck covered with black feathers. In flight, flocks of Australian White Ibis form distinctive V-shaped flight patterns. Another common name for this bird is Sacred Ibis, but this more appropriately refers to a closely related African species.

Distribution: The Australian White Ibis is common and widespread in northern and eastern Australia, and both its range and abundance in western Australia is expanding, despite its absence from Western Australia prior to the 1950s. The species is absent from Tasmania.

Habitat: The Australian White Ibis can be observed in all but the driest habitats. Preferred habitats include swamps, lagoons, floodplains and grasslands, but it has also become a successful inhabitant of urban parks and gardens.The Australian White Ibis' range of food includes both terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates and human scraps. The most favoured foods are crayfish and mussels, which the bird obtains by digging with its long bill. Mussels are opened by hammering them on a hard surface to reveal the soft body inside.

Feeding: The Australian White Ibis' range of food includes both terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates and human scraps. The most favoured foods are crayfish and mussels, which the bird obtains by digging with its long bill. Mussels are opened by hammering them on a hard surface to reveal the soft body inside.

Breeding: The male Australian White Ibis secures a pairing territory on a branch of a tall tree in order to attract a female. The courtship ceremony involves the male putting on a noisy display, as well as showing aggression towards other males. When a female arrives, the male attracts her by bowing from his branch. He then offers the female a twig, forging a bond when she grasps it and they begin to preen one another. Once the pair bond is cemented, the birds fly off to build a nest at another location. Australian White Ibis nest in large colonies, often with the Straw-necked Ibis, T. spinicollis. Young are born naked and helpless. One or two broods may be reared in a year.
