Thanks to everyone who took the trouble to view, comment or fave.
Thanks to Flickr I was made aware of this place this year.
Since then I've seen it in books too - so I'm sorry to say it's a bit of an iconic or cliched shot which I always prefer to avoid but they keep calling to me unfortunately :(
Even though I spent many holidays in Plymouth for the first 16 years of my life & most of my summers in Devon for the last 15 years, this week was the first time I'd ever been to this spot - great how Flickr lets us see so many places through everyone else's eyes (& lenses) & inspires us to get out there & explore.
When I first saw pictures of this, the perspective made me think the post was about 18 inches high - the kind of thing you sometimes get in a garden to mark the grave of a small family pet like a hamster, guinea pig or gerbil - but it's actually very big.
Commonly known as the Windy Post this chunk of granite is around 7 feet tall but despite the misleading name the reason it is leaning is not down to the wild Dartmoor winds.
You see, Dartmoor ponies are quite poorly equipped to deal with itchiness.
Unlike human hands and fingers which are extremely sophisticated both in terms of placement and application of pressure - ponies hooves are far too unwieldy & crude for localised scratching - and of course they can't reach all over the pony's body.
The only other major tool in the pony's scratching armoury is a vigorously whipping tail action, but even this together with hooves leaves large areas unscratchable.
For this reason Dartmoor ponies have been known to rub themselves against this post to relieve any urgently itchy areas - being intelligent animals they usually rub downhill allowing gravity to apply pressure and do most of the work as they rub gently backwards and forwards.
Over the last several hundred years this has caused the post to lean downwards :)
I just managed to get here about an hour before sunset and couldn't believe my luck that there were some great clouds & crepuscular Rays appearing to highlight the post!
Shortly after this the rain came down very heavily & the sunset was very poor but was grateful for this light & reflections.
- must dash my wife has just caught me on Flickr again which means another spanking is imminent :(

Eastern Spinebill
Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris
The Eastern Spinebill sometimes hovers like a hummingbird when feeding on the nectar from flowers. Most Australian honeyeaters feed on flowers from a perched position.
Description: The Eastern Spinebill is most easily recognised by its very long, fine, down-curved beak and energetic flight, during which its white outer tail feathers are prominent. Males have a grey-black crown which extends in a black line on either site of the breast. The breast and throat are white, with a rufous patch in the centre of the throat. The wings and lower back are dark grey and the underparts and upper back are buff. Females are similar to males but have less distinct markings.
Similar species: Crescent Honeyeater, Tawny-crowned Honeyeater, Western Spinebill (in Western Australia)
Distribution: The Eastern Spinebill's range is generally east of the Great Dividing Range from Cooktown in Queensland to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia
Habitat: The Eastern Spinebill prefers heath, forest and woodland.
Seasonal movements: Largely sedentary, but undergoes some local movements, especially away from higher elevations in autumn/winter.
Feeding: The Eastern Spinebill feeds on insects and nectar while perched or while hovering. Nectar is obtained from a wide array of flowers, including grevilleas, but its beak is particularly well-suited to extracting nectar from tubular flowers such as epacrids.
Breeding: The Eastern Spinebill's nest is a small cup of twigs, grass and bark, combined with hair and spider's web, built in a tree fork, generally between 1 and 5 metres from the ground. Only the female builds the nest and incubates the eggs, but both parents feed the young when they hatch.
Calls: Short, repeated, high-pitched piping.
Minimum Size: 15cm
Maximum Size: 16cm
Average size: 16cm
Average weight: 11g
Breeding season: August to January
Clutch Size: 2
Incubation: 14 days
Nestling Period: 14 days

Nach meinem spätabendlichen Fotowalk durch Weimar und einer angenehmen Nacht im Auto, bin ich am letzten Tag meiner Rundreise in Jena angekommen. Meine Idee ist es die Stadt in ihrem Talkessel so zu fotografieren, dass ich mich auf einer Anhöhe befinde und der Jentower in den Morgenhimmel hinragt und, mit ein bisschen Glück, im Hintergrund ein schöner Morgenhimmel zu sehen ist. Mithilfe von GoogleMaps habe ich eine Location auf einer Anhöhe mit freier Sicht ausfindig gemacht und mich mit voller Ausrüstung positioniert. Erste Bilder und Warten auf den Morgen...

After my late evening photo walk through Weimar and a pleasant night in the car, I arrived in Jena on the last day of my road trip. My idea is to photograph the city in its basin so that I am on a hill and the Jentower rises into the morning sky and, with a bit of luck, a beautiful morning sky can be seen in the background. Using Google Maps, I located a location on a hill with a clear view and positioned myself with full equipment. First pictures and waiting for the morning...

Captured in February 2019, and to be completely clear - I always read all of the comments here on my photographs. General 'social media' advice is to never read the comments though and I can understand that fully. I am just a photographer documenting our individual lives as we navigate our way through this shared world but I get comments almost daily that I am promoting Islamic propaganda or that I am promoting western gay decadence. I am not sure how I can be doing both at the same time but these are the comments I get, mostly from Russian accounts, on some of my shots. What a sad world we live in.
All of these comments get deleted, the authors get blocked and if their message contains targeted hate against anyone they get reported too. We all live on and share one tiny world in the vastness of space - I have no tolerance of hatred towards others. Stay safe!

In the comments of this photo: flic.kr/p/2mdXzNW that I posted yesterday Frank Keller reminded me that I did actually shoot another real "revenue" freight on the bridge. I suppose the reason I forgot was because well....look at this. Terrible afternoon light on a hazy mid summer day shooting toward the sun coupled with about the most unappealing consist you could ask for with a one unit wonder leading a string of empty 'bare tables' is pretty forgettable don't you think?!
SD70MAC 4006 leads a string of empty 89 ft deck flats south as train 192S an extra military train that delivered equipment north to Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks and was headed back to Anchorage. They are seen here at MP 284.2 sailing nearly 300 ft above Hurricane Gulch on the more than 900 ft long bridge built in 1921.

A first for me - the first time I have seen these long, slender lizards.
Much longer than our native common lizard, Wall Lizards are found only in a few sites in the UK but their population seems to be thriving. This individual was out basking in a disused quarry on Portland, Dorset.
Great to meet up with Flickr friend Mark Eggleton on a perfect warm, sunny day to look for reptiles.
