Same again - another night in at home.

Golden Eagle, immature, Little Morro Creek Road, Morro Bay, CA

Taken on July 12, 2021 (uploaded 7/14/21)

Most likely two immatures, fighting over food.

Here are comments by experienced birders:

Good Morning Petra,

With similar amounts of white on the tail (read lots of white...), I would say both of those birds are juveniles and were hatched/fledged this year. I don't think it was a food exchange because of the both bird's ages. I think it was a sibling trying to take a food item away from the other. The first bird came down and might have gotten/might not have gotten a piece of what the second bird (the one that flew away and landed on the ground...) was eating. But the second bird retained some or all of what it had been snacking on.

Good eyes on picking up on what was happening. And thanks for sharing...

Hi Petra,

From the freeze frames in your eBird checklist, the bird on the left, which appears to be the recipient of the food exchange, is pretty clearly a younger bird (in its first year), as evidenced by the broad white base to the tail. The bird delivering the prey looks to me to be an adult.

I know that among the larger eagles in South America (Harpy, Crested, Chaco) and Africa (Martial, Crowned), the juveniles continue to be fed by their parents for a long time, often up to a year, after leaving the nest – apparently it takes a long time to learn how to hunt large prey! And, in most of those species, pairs only nest every other year, given that the parents are still taking care of their youngster from the previous year. Anyway, it wouldn’t surprise me if young Golden Eagles didn’t also continue to at least occasionally be delivered food by their parents after fledging, at least for a month or two.

Both birds look like one-yr-olds (SYs in banding terminology). The images of the flying bird in the sky is definitely an SY so if this is one of the others it would help confirm this. The white-based tail feathers are juvenile, which they keep for the first year, and the worn wings and beginnings of molt indicate they are not recent

fledglings. They don't start breeding until at least 2-3 years old so I wouldn't consider either one of them an adult.

I can't help with the behavioral question but it would seem they may have been fighting over some food.

Very cool capture on the eagle interaction! Based on the amount of white in the tails, the 1 that initiated has to be an immature - and as best I can tell, there's a hint of some white in the tail on the one that flew off to feed elsewhere but I can't say for sure if it's a subadult or a full adult. My guess is that the immature (can't say for sure if maybe this was a larger bird, which could suggest a female) was trying to chase the other off a kill and I suspect it partially succeeded the way it landed right where it chased the other off - but, the subadult/adult (if actually smaller than the other, a male?) clearly carried off part of the kill. Maybe a larger ground-squirrel or marmot??

I've heard of this in Bald Eagles where juveniles/immatures tend to be more brazen/even reckless in trying to steal prey from the adults (more experienced/successful hunters) as the risk/reward is a better proposition for a younger bird faced with hunger/starvation - I imagine maybe the same is at play here?

Hi Petra,

My apologies for the delayed reply. It appears that both of the eagles have some white at the base of the tail so I believe that both are immatures. Because of their ages, I don’t think this was a “food exchange” in the traditional sense but rather on bird trying to steal food from another. It looks like the bird that initially had the food flew off and continued eating it after being temporarily interrupted by another eagle.

One comment on reddit mentioned the original BTII Loader drone should have a BTI

version and another mentioned it reminded him of AMEE from the movie Red Planet so I gave it an AMEE style arm and a BT I color scheme.
