Archaeologists from the Mexican Institute of Anthropology and History excavating in the Great Plaza at Chichen Itza recently made a fascinating discovery. They found a building between El Castillo Pyramid and the Temple of the Warriors that is over 1,000 years old and predates El Castillo by at least a century. To date, his team has excavated 12 meters of the building, one of the corners, a cornice and what is probably the southeast wall.

The building had been buried by the ancient inhabitants of the city, thus preserving it. This was common practice among the Maya who often built new temples on top of monuments erected by their ancestors because they believed that it concentrated divine energy and power.

Mitch Mitchell, R.I.P.

Mitch Mitchell, drummer for the Jimi Hendrix Experience who had just finished a tour with a Hendrix tribute show, was found dead Wednesday morning in a hotel room in Portland, Ore. He was 61.

He apparently died of natural causes, the Multnomah County medical examiner told the Portland Oregonian. Mitchell was found dead at 3 a.m. in the Benson Hotel.

Mitchell, whose birth name was John, had been performing with the Experience Hendrix Tour, which made its 18th and final stop Friday at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Mitchell had been taking a vacation in Portland before returning home to England.

The tour had stopped in Los Angeles on Nov. 2 and Mitchell appeared on a handful of songs as did Billy Cox, the bassist in the final edition of the Experience and Band of Gypsys.

One of the best rock drummers of the 1960s, Mitchell was able to combine power, finesse and technique in following the lead of Hendrix, considered rock’s finest guitarist at the time of his death in 1970 as well as today. The trio’s debut album contains three prime examples of Mitchell’s inventive style: "Fire," "Third Stone from the Sun" and "Manic Depression."

Hendrix and Mitchell had reunited in 1970 after the Band of Gypsys broke up and the two were plotting their next move at the time Hendrix died. After that, Mitchell rarely recorded and only over the last decade was he active in promulgating the Hendrix legacy. At one point, Mitchell sold his rights to the Experience for about $200,000.

Prior to meeting Hendrix, Mitchell had been a child actor before taking up the drums in his native England. In 1964 and ’65, he played with the Riot Squad, Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames and the Pretty Things, leaving them after about a dozen gigs to join Hendrix’s band.

His first post-Hendrix band was a jazz-rock supergroup with Jack Bruce and Larry Coryell that never recorded.

In 1972 he formed Ramatam with Mike Pinera and lead guitarist April Lawton but then limited his recording to very few sessions, most notably ones with Muddy Waters and Robert Wyatt.

And then there was the Dirty Macs …

... John Lennon on vocals and guitar, Eric Clapton on lead guitar, Keith Richards on bass, and Mitch Mitchell on drums.

There's more discussion about Jimi's relationship with Manny's in an interview with Manny Goldrich himself in the first of two historic volumes I produced for Guitar World, JIMI HENDRIX: THE ULTIMATE TRIBUTE (GW September, 1985), which is pictured right here:

More pictures and a clever video - this set taken by Gemma on our day out round East Park feeding the birds, and then on to the Deep.

Gemma's 360 degree camera is amazing - some of the footage you can get is just incredible!

What a fantastic weekend!

It had been a few months since Gemma was last in Hull (too long!) and for the second time this year (Birmingham in March was the first) we went to see Kinky Boots at the theatre

What an awesome show it was - again!

What made this time extra special was that my Mum was with us this time.

It was the first time my Mum (and my Dad, since he gave us a lift to the theatre) had met Gemma, and the first time they had met me in full glam.

After a brilliant show, we walked across town to The Star. The same night in Hull, Adam Ant was playing and our lovely friend Mike went to see him, so Mike came to meet us in The Star afterwards as well!

Pics from in The Star. Shameless posing at the bar, lol.

We were in Leeds a day early for Leeds First Friday weekend. We went to see a comedy night at Leeds Library on the Thursday night.

First we had tea at Pieminister and unexpectedly there was a power cut while we were there. This meant the tills stopped working and so we got our meal for free! :-)

The comedy night was hosted by the very funny Chris Lumb of Shoe Cake Comedy, we had 3 great stand-ups to see - Brennan Reece, Seeta Wrilghtson and Ben Norris, all of them hilarious!

Gemma and I did a very brave thing, and quite deliberately. We sat right at the front where comedians will often pick people out! Although I suspect it's more difficult ground for a comedian to pick on a trans girl. And as it turned out, none of the comedians did pick on us, though they did pick on plenty of others in the audience, ha ha! It was a good test of our self-confidence doing that, and I really enjoyed the whole experience.

Afterwards we went for a drink in Queens Court before heading back to the hotel.

Hotel selfies.

I was casting about for which dress to wear and found this one. It was a charity shop bargain I picked up a while ago for only £2.00!

These were taken yesterday at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. It was really gorgeous and there was hardly anybody there, except for a few groups of tourists that came every 15 mins or so. I'd always driven by this landmark but never really stopped to look at it closely, so yesterday my dad I decided we would. I was a little bummed though because I wanted to be able to walk under and around the actual monument, but it was fenced off for construction :( Maybe next time.

I have a few more from yesterday that I will upload throughout the day today. For now though, I've got to go clean the bathrooms and kitchen before my mom gets home tonight.

P.S. Hey, if you have the new flickr, I don't have to put up a link to view on black anymore! Woo! Okay, I'll admit, that's one thing I do like about it... ;)

On my plot.

Thanks for your visits, comments, faves, invites, etc. I really appreciate it very much.
