5/2024 - My second visit to the Mt. Washington Cog Railway was unfortunately a few days before steam began running for the season. Upon my arrival, the cog diesels were making moves at Marshfield Station.
A trip to Mountain View on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway and some wild flowers once I got off. The cog train leaving me behind at Mountain View.

It works. In order to get the 42 tooth cog to work I had to widen the spacer from 2.5mm to 3mm. The derailleur also has a 15 tooth jockey pulley. This might not work with a 13 tooth jockey pulley and I don't have one to try. I will be going back to 39 teeth cogs. The new style megarange derailleurs look like they will work with a 40 tooth cog but probably not with a 15 tooth jockey pulley. A 39 tooth cog will also let me use a 28 for the second largest cog. All this came out of recycle bins I use what I find. The old style megarange derailleur also works in all gears giving it a 52 teeth or greater chain take up.
For those outside New England it might be helpful to know the Cog Railway was built in 1869 to shuttle tourists up and down the tallest mountain in the northeastern U.S., Mount Washington. It uses a Marsh rack system to make the climb, which gives it the name. You can see the unique middle rail in the tracks.
Just when I stopped trying, this triquetra appeared. I've wanted to create another triquetra after successfully making one years ago and then losing the params. People keep on asking if they can use that particular image (which is too small to be useful). Now I have something else I can offer instead.

The children studied the insides of old watches before they created this paper print. They looked at cogs, wheels, levers and springs for shape.
