The mechanics of the cog railway allow it to continuously climb steep gradients up the mountain. The train uses a unique cog wheel that meshes with the tracks. The engine pushed the train car from behind. This photograph, taken at Sun of a Gun Hill, shows the 25% gradient that the train was capable of climbing.c. 1891. J.G. The cog railway route ran through the neighborhood of Minnehaha. Here, Minnehaha Falls can be seen to the left of the train. J.G. Hiestand. c. 1910. credit: Manitou Springs Historical Society at Miramont Castle Museum, Manitou Springs, CO
The Halfway House, first used by weary hikers and burro riders on their way to the summit of Pike's Peak, nearly doubled in size after the Manitou & Pike's Peak Railway was built. Since it's first run in 1890, the Manitou & Pike's Peak Railway has updated it's trains three times. The first trains were steam locomotives. In the 1930s gasoline powered engines were introduced (shown here), next came diesel-electric trains constructed by General Electric. The trains used today are Swiss-made deisel-electric. credit: Manitou Springs Historical Society at Miramont Castle Museum, Manitou Springs, CO
When Zalmon Simmons, founder of the Simmons Beautyrest Mattress Company, climbed to the summit of Pike's Peak on a burro, he was struck by the beautiful views, as shown in this postcard. He also realized that there must be a more civilized way to reach the top. In 1889, construction of his envisioned cog railway began. credit: Manitou Springs Historical Society at Miramont Castle Museum, Manitou Springs, CO

Rusted cogs - part of what looks like a log-splitter driven by pulleys and belts, originally powered by a steam engine I would think.
Mountain bike cogs. Just playing with macro... Converted to B&W in Photoshop CS. Oh, and I finally figured out how to keep my EXIF data when I upload photos, so I'm happy!

Jungfraubahn AG (JB, Jungfraubahn Holding AG): The Jungfrau Railway is a rack railway which links Kleine Scheidegg (2,061 m a.s.l.) with the highest railway station in Europe at Jungfraujoch (3,454 m a.s.l.), through a single track of metric gauge with a lenght of 9.3 km and the Strub rack-and-pinion system. It is one of the few railways in the world that is still electrified with a three-phase alternating current system, with two contact wires (1,125 volts / 50 Hz). The line was put into service by stretches between the years 1898 and 1912.
In front of the warehouse located at the same level as the Kleine Scheidegg station, two wagons of the departmental stock.
Early on, it was clear that snow would be an obstacle for the cog railway. Special snowplows were designed to make way for the trains. J.G. Hiestand. c. 1910. credit: Manitou Springs Historical Society at Miramont Castle Museum, Manitou Springs, CO
