Photograph taken at 11:11am on Wednesday 16th July 2025 at an altitude of Fifty one in the Grounds of Warnham Nature Reserve in Horsham, West Sussex. Here we see a juvenile Common moorhen (Gallinula chioropus), also known as the Marsh hen, waterhen, the swamp chicken and the common gallinule, the name Morhen being derived from 13th century English Moor meaning marsh.

The Millpond dates back to the 16th Century and parts of the woodland dates back even further to the 13th Century. A beautiful location for a walk, or to sit amongst nature and so see birds and butterflies in their natural habitat.

Testing out the RX100 M3's video capabilities - can you tell I'm a new dad! So far I've been very impressed by this little camera, I think it lives up to the hype. Before buying I didn't think I'd capture many videos, but the combination of good auto-focus and image stabilization make it rather easy to take decent looking videos. Much the opposite to my Canon 7D, which can take really great video but you really have to work at.

I shot this at 24fps using the XAVC S codec. From the other video's I've shot, I'm a fan of the sharpness from capturing 60fps, but I still need to play with ISO, aperture and shutter speed settings to find this camera's sweet spot. Also, capturing at 120fps is also a nice feature, even at just 1280x720.

The American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) is a large passerine bird species of the family Corvidae. It is a common bird found throughout much of North America. American crows measure 16-21 inches in length and are the New World counterpart to the carrion crow and the hooded crow of Eurasia

In the mornings I would stroll around in the early hours on the shoreline by the Marina, on this occasion with a little inquisitive friend by my side.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Seventy metres at 13:43pm on Thursday 25th May off Keating Cros Road and Benvenuto Avenue at Victoria Butterfly Gardens in Brentwood Bay on Vancouver Island in Brirish Columbia, Canada.

This is a Blue Morpho (Morpho Peleides) butterfly, one of the largest butterflies in the world with a wingspan up to eight inches. Light reflects from the microscopic scales on their wingbacks, giving a vivid iridescent appearance, and they are mainly seen active and in flight, resting only briefly. They are found in the tropical rainforests of Latin America from Mexico to Columbia.

The Millpond dates back to the 16th Century and parts of the woodland dates back even further to the 13th Century. A beautiful location for a walk, or to sit amongst nature and so see birds and butterflies in their natural habitat.

Here we see a two male and one female Mallard Ducks eating seed from a tree stump. Mallards are dabbling ducks which breed all over temperate and sub tropical Americas, Eurasia and North Africa as well as New zealand and a host of other territories. Belonging to the waterfowl family, the males or drakes are particularly beautiful with glossy green heads and bright yellow beaks.

This is a Siproeta stelenes (malachite), a Neotropical brush-footed butterfly (family Nymphalidae).The malachite has large wings that are black and brilliant green or yellow-green on the upperside and light brown and olive green on the underside.

It is named for the mineral malachite, which is similar in colour to the bright green on the butterfly's wings.

Photograph taken at 14:01pm on Monday 3rd March 2025 at an altitude of Fifty metres in the Grounds of Warnham Nature Reserve in Horsham, West Sussex. The Millpond dates back to the 16th Century and parts of the woodland dates back even further to the 13th Century. A beautiful location for a walk, or to sit amongst nature and so see birds and butterflies in their natural habitat.

Here we see a European goldfinch or simply the goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis), a small passerine bird in the finch family that is native to Europe, North Africa and western and central Asia. It has been introduced to other areas, including Australia, New Zealand, Uruguay and the United States.

Here we see a Eurasian nuthatch or wood nuthatch (Sitta europaea), a small passerine bird found throughout the Palearctic and in Europe. First described in 1758, this is part of a family of similar looking Nuthatch species and is a small bird with short tail and wings and long pointed bill.

Thanks to Martijn Boer for providing the board with this chip on it.

This chip was really hard to identify, and I had to dig up some Nokia 5110 service manuals and technical documents to even identify it and get a rough idea of what it does. Upon searching the writing on the chip package, I found nothing relevant, so I went ahead and cracked it open in hopes that an on-die marking could help me out. At the center of the chip there is some inscriptions which gave me some clues. First off, the TWL91310 or MSW/ABB strings did not bring up anything. The COBBAGJ string is what led me to discover the Nokia 5110 service manuals which told me what this chip is. Also on the bottom left there is the Texas Instruments logo and a timestamp for 1999. This leads me to believe it was probably a custom design requested by Nokia since you can usually find Texas instruments datasheets quite easily.

Here's a section from the technical documentation explaining what this chip does:

"The COBBA–GJ provides an interface between the baseband and the RF–circuitry. COBBA–GJ performs analogue to digital conversion of the receive signal. For transmit path COBBA_GJ performs digital to analogue conversion of the transmit amplifier power control ramp and the in–phase and quadrature signals. A slow speed digital to analogue converter will provide automatic frequency control (AFC). The COBBA asic is at any time connected to MAD asic with two interfaces, one for transferring tx and rx data between MAD and COBBA and one for transferring codec rx/tx samples."

(MAD is the main processor of the phone, largest chip on the board)

So it appears to be responsible for some cellular signal processing. In other places in the technical documentation it also talks about how this chip handles some audio processing and codecs as well.

It is also a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation. It is over 300 acres, and is part of an extensive wildlife corridor together with Petts Wood and the Jubilee Country Park.

The Comma (Polygonia c-album butterfly has made a remarkable come back in the UK following a drastic decline in the Twentieth Century, now being found in Southern parts of the country, spreading Northwards.

We’ve wanted to attend a powwow for ages, but the timing and opportunity never really presented itself until this past autumn, when we finally had the honour and privilege of attending our first one.

It was a sunny, warm, perfect blue sky day when we arrived at the powwow and I immediately realized what a treat we were in for – and what a tremendous opportunity it was to capture something truly extraordinary. We took turns taking photos and I shot a few iPhone video clips I’d planned to email to a friend (how I wish now that we'd taken our video camera). In the end, the experience had such an impact on me that I decided to create a video in an attempt to convey some of the beauty, the awe, and the poignancy we experienced being at the powwow.

I’m proud to say that, although I needed some help from my partner, I largely completed this video on my own. It’s my most complex video project to date. This video also represents an artistic departure from my usual hypnotic affinity to saturated colour. Billed as "the most colourful parade on the planet" this powwow completely lived up to its billing: the colours of the traditional regalia were spectacularly vibrant. Yet, I had an unusually strong inclination to include black and white conversions in the video. It felt odd to me to feel such a clear preference for using some monochrome photography for such a colourful event. But, for me, it conveys something indescribable, something that goes beyond the immediate dazzle of colour.

Many thanks to my partner for equalizing all of my soundtracks and figuring out the codecs, video render settings and other such things, of which I know nothing.

Featured: BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera mounted on Manfrotto 504HD Fluid video Head. Lens Voigtlander APO Lanthar 180mm f/4 mounted with Metabones Speedbooster Nikon-MFT. High quality Audio provided from Sony Digital Recorder PCM-D50 connected live to the BMPCC for direct input in the video track (no post synchronization needed). I also use a Hoodman Loupe mounted directly on the back LCD display to focus accurately in daylight (same technique as with my D800E). Use of Focus peaking (green color in my settings) seems to work well for fast focus pull.

I am exploring video using the the latest PRORes 422 codec of the BMPCC from BlackMagic Design. With the Metabones Speedbooster my Voigtlander 180mm f/4 is transformed into a 130mm f/2.8 (1 stop gain with x0.7 FL factor). On this sensor with a crop factor close to 3 it ends up being a 380mm f/2.8 Telephoto lens which allows me to shoot birds at a remote distance.

Eastern Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are native to the southern BC mainland, one of many different sub species of Raccoon, but are an introduced invasive species on Haida Gwaii. They were introduced in the 1940s to enhance the local fur trade, but they represent a significant threat to ground-nesting marine birds. My family refer to them as 'Trash Panda's', but I love them. They are also known as Racoons, Coons or Common Racoons

It's sunday, it's summer and of course that means rain showers and rare sunlight in the UK! No matter, a sunflower always makes us happy, so here is one in our garden.....

The Common sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant with a daisy-like flower face. Its scientific name comes from the Greek words helios (“sun”) and anthos (“flower”). The flowers come in many colors (yellow, red, orange, maroon, brown), but they are commonly bright yellow with brown centers that ripen into heavy heads filled with seeds. Sunflowers make excellent cut flowers, and many attract bees, birds, and butterflies.

For the past 2 days I have been testing my new Nikon P1000 camera out in my yard and neighborhood. I am very impressed. You have to haul a 3.5 lb camera and a hefty tripod. I used my Manfrotto 3130 tripod with a fluid head that weighs 8 lbs for telephoto shots. The fluid head facilitates video pans, but even it drifted down while shooting at far out lengths such as 3000 mm indicating a need for counter weights such as sand bags or a heavier duty tripod. You also have to use a remote control for shutter depressions and controlling the camera. I purchased a Nikon ML-L7 remote which did the job very well.

The Coolpix P1000 does not use .nef for raw files. It uses .nrw format. I could not use Adobe PS CS6 to read these files. I started saving files in both raw and jpg formats instead of raw exclusively as I do on my Nikon DLSR camera. I had to download Nikon Capture NX-D which came with Nikon Picture Control and Nikon Transfer 2 which I have not tested yet. I Downloaded and installed a Nikon NRW codec. I could not see NRW files in Photoshop CS6, Adobe Bridge CS6 or View NX V2. But I could see them in Capture NX-D, Windows photos, Win Explorer, Win movie Maker, Photo Gallery and Win Photo Viewer.

It pays to purchase a 77 mm clear filter cover because the possibility of scratching the huge lens looms very high.

The Jpg image size is stored in a 12:9 ratio. My other Nikon cameras are sized in a12:8 ratio. Also many functions are accessed by menu rather than buttons common on Nikon DLSR’s.

I have not tested the bird or moon modes on the P1000 yet, but they look promising on paper.

All in all I am very pleased with the Nikon P1000 and look forward to having a lot of fun with it, especially for birding.

The Canon EOS R5 is Canon's most advanced, complete camera in a long, long time. It has a few flaws (most notably a tendency to overheat when shooting the most demanding video codecs), but it has a very long list of virtues, including high resolution (45Mpx), great high ISO performance and dynamic range, fast burst rates (12 FPS mechanical and 20 FPS Electronic), deep buffers, great IBIS (sensor stabilization), and a truly awesome focus system. Add an amazing amount of video options and great ergonomics, and this is a camera that I simply love using. Bottom line: I bought one. Here's my review coverage:

Photograph taken at 13:22pm on Monday 20th May 2025 at an altitude of Sixty metres in the Grounds of Warnham Nature Reserve in Horsham, West Sussex.

This is a Marsh frog (Pelophylax ridibundus), a species of frog which are native to continental Europe and Western Asia. They are not a native species in the UK but were introduced in Kent in the 1930's.

During mating season, male marsh frogs use two prominent grey air sacs located on either side of their head to produce their distinctive call. These vocal sacs inflate, amplifying the loud, quacking croaks that attract female frogs. This behaviour is especially common during spring and summer breeding periods.

The Millpond dates back to the 16th Century and parts of the woodland dates back even further to the 13th Century. A beautiful location for a walk, or to sit amongst nature and so see birds and butterflies in their natural habitat.

It was Completed in 1938, and spans the First Narrows of Burrard Inlet, connecting the City of Vancouver to the North Shore municipalities of North Vancouver and West Vancouver. It's named after the Lions, two mountain peaks visible from the city, and is also known as the First Narrows Bridge.

Work and sunsets.

Found out today that all the extra work I did over vacation and all the hustle I put into getting a report written was pretty much wasted. The speech codec we were testing had a bug that invalidated half of our results and rendered our testing moot. That meeting in France is going to be interesting.

Hosted by TransLink and South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority, the Trans-Expo 2010 is an annual event aimed at bringing transit professionals together across Canada. This year the gathering is held at the Vancouver Convention Centre on November 16, 2010. Nearly 100 exhibitors set up booths at West Exhibit Hall C to showcase their mostly environmental-friendly products.

Quite a good number of newer and yet everyday technologies are also incorporated into the public transit system, many with sustainability features. Diesel-Electric hybrid engine, LED lighting, solar-powered devices, GPS, Wi-Fi, H.264 video codec etc. Many of these technologies are not alien to the average consumer.

So much for the new stuff, but objects that have interesting heritage values are not forgotten either. The Transit Museum Society had an on-site exhibit with a few antique transit buses on display. These are the ones that your parents or grandparents used to ride. In fact, BC has been building interurban buses over 100 years ago. In 1905, the BC Electric Railway shop in New Westminster built Car 1207 for opening of the new Steveston line by way of the Arbutus Corridor connecting Vancouver and Richmond. Many long-time residents among those communities still remember the streetcar line and some have longed for its return.
