This is my lil sis Samm i just bought this camera brand new Yesterday so i was anxious to try it out! and grabbed her and took out side our house to take a quick shot lol i guess some of the neighbors were spooked to see these lights goin off so we got the cops called on us hahaha but i just told em im tryin out my new camera and that i live right here and he said oh its really no big deal just gotta drive by to make sure it aint anything sketchy lol so then we wrapped it up. the bad side was when i got home my computer wasnt reading the new t2i codec so non of my photos could be processed on photoshop. after an our of a panic attack i settled down and looked for any leads to figure this out. which in the end lead to me completely upgrading my entire cs4 creative suit to recognize the new codecs that come with the new DSLRs so problem averted and now im stoked to get used to this camera and its HD video feature!

Also in Alvor..

Day OFF, I'll try to catch up on your shots later on, I've been busy today re-installing Windows and every little tiny and not so tiny software, hardware, drivers, codecs, scripts, uff...

All done.

Finally, I've got a clean face on my laptop :-)

Here's a story you will love;)

After watching the Oscar's last night, I had to listen to "Southern Rain", because every time I see Miley Cyrus, I think of that song. I'm an audio engineer In Phx AZ, and I'm pretty sure I was the first person outside the Band and Producers to hear the song. About 11 years ago, someone walked in to my studio and asked me if I could stay late for a quick session, I said sure. Turns out it was with Billy Ray Cyrus. He was in town for a concert and he had just finished recording that song a few months prior, but the final mix had just completed. So he booked time with us because we had an ISDN codec (it lets you send CD quality, digital audio in real time down a phone line). I was setting up and waiting for the connection to the Nashville studio where one of his producers, Dann Huff was going to send us the final mix so I could record it to ProTools and burn a CD so Billy could hear it. While I was getting ready, Billy Ray went and layed down on the floor inside the vocal booth. They had just drove from the last tour date. Our connection was made and Dann said hello. I told Billy Ray to just put the headphones on and opened the mike that was in the room so they could talk and he wouldn't have to move (phone call with no phone;) Before they sent the audio to us, Dann asked him how the "little one" was. Billy Ray tells Dann "Oh man, that girl is gonna be the death of me...she wants to be a star in the worst way". At the time I never gave it another thought until she became the little star that she is:) And now, every time I see her, I just smile and think of that song.

p.s. At the time, all I knew of Billy Ray was "Achy Breaky Heart" so I wasn't real crazy about doing the session, but after talking with him for 10 minutes I found that he was one of the nicest, most genuine guys I've worked with.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Forty nine metres at 13:38pm on Friday 26th May 2023 off Richards Trail and Herd Road at the Pacific Northwest Raptors in North Cowichan on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.

The centre cares for injured birds of prey that would not have survived in the wild due to illness or damage caused by mankind or vehicles. The birds used in the flight demonstrations are free to fly away at any point, and some actually do! They are fitted with tracking devices.

Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus), derives it's name from the Greek for 'Sea eagle', and the 'bald' denotation actually derives from an older meaning of 'white headed'.Bald Eagles can be up to forty inches in length with a wingspan up to seven and a half feet and can weigh up to 6.3kgs. The females are generally 25% larger than the males.

The American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) is a large passerine bird species of the family Corvidae. It is a common bird found throughout much of North America. American crows measure 16-21 inches in length and are the New World counterpart to the carrion crow and the hooded crow of Eurasia

I love taking stills with my new iPhone 6s but the video at 4K is pretty disappointing unless you lock off the shot and in bright conditions and only view it on the phone. Most of the time the artifacts in the video ruin it for me, all that 4K detail goes down the toilet with all the codec issues. I think a small point and shoot like the Sony RX100 IV would have worked much better on this family trip to Disney World.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Seven metres at 11.23am on Monday 29th May 2014 off 2903 Ocean Boulevard, Victoria, on the Esquimalt Lagoon Migratory Bird Sanctuary, on the Juan De Fuca Strait, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

The Lagoon is one of seven Migratory Bird Sanctuaries in British Columbia, and an important stopover for birds journeying between North and South America. Visitors include geese and Swans, Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons, plus many other species of birds.

The Great Blue Heron (Ardea Herodias) is a wading bird in the Heron family Ardeidae and found in North America, Central America, the Caribbean and Galapagos Islands. One of the largest of Herons, it has a head to tail length of 01-137 centimetres (36-54 inches) and a wingspan of 187-201 centimetres (66-79 inches). They are found where my family live, and naturally very wary of mankind, flying off as soon as you are within fifty to one hundred yards of them.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Two metres, at 13:02pm on Monday 9th January 2023, off the Mall and Horse Guards Road within the grounds of St James's Park in Central London, one of the Royal parks of London situated in South West London.

Here we see, Sciurus Carolinensis (Eastern Gray Squirrel or Grey Squirrel), a tree squirrel native to North America and first introduced to the UK in the 1870's. Though it was largely responsible for the decimation of our own native red squirrel population, those are now on the increase and found in certain parts of the UK including Scotland. The Greys are still an ecologically essential natural forester regenerator.

This is Sharp's MD-DS8/9 portable MD player. It is the world's first mass portable audio device with true balanced output. It is also the first with 1-bit audio codec used in DSD and SACD and other bitstream audio that's popular today.

Low noise floor, good measurements overall, but almost no stereo separation. Like, almost mono.

I've measured its output with RMAA here:

I've recorded a video review of it here:

This photograph was taken at an altitude of Fifty seven metres at 14:32pm on a cold and wintry afternoon, on December 13th 2022, and a temperature of -1 degrees, off Chessington Avenue in Bexleyheath, Kent. Here we see a Redwing (Turdus iliacus), the smallest of the Thrush family and protected under the Wildlife and countryside Act 1981 with a current status of Red.

They rarely visit gardens unless snow is on the ground, and there are only a few nesting pairs in the UK, mainly in Scotland. They migrate to the UK from the Scandinavian coast, Russia, the Faroes and Iceland, and can detect berries using Ultra violet vision. They stay in the UK from October to April.

Sorry for the essay this week. Feel free to ignore all this and just leave a comment on my photographic genius! ;) Please, don't read any of it, nothing to see here, move along...

Two weeks ago we asked for suggestions and received two great ideas for themes. Here's the first - nerdy, thank you David - which I can do. Last week I gave you a further insight into my character, and I'm going to continue the trend this week.

I.am.a.Nerd.

No really, I actually am. I like to pretend that I'm not, because nerds aren't cool. But I am. I have a first class honours degree in Computer Science and Electronics. That desk behind me is not a prop, that actually is my desk, all those things were actually on it. I do have four screens on it, a screwdriver and a disassembled camera under the monitor. That rat's nest of cables lives in a box that I use to keep all my 'might be useful later' nerdy stuff in.

Occasionally I slip up and let the nerd out in public, on the road trip we got into a discussion of the benefits of JPEG vs RAW and I brought up compression. Forgetting myself for a moment, I chipped in with "as long as you don't push it too far, the loss of high frequency information is negligible, that's the beauty of the Discrete Cosine Transformation algorithm." The silence was, in hindsight, rather amusing. I started to explain but when Jeff's eyes glazed over (to his credit, he lasted a good 10 seconds longer than Kim) I decided to stop. Anyway, I wrote a JPEG codec as part of my final year dissertation... this is not helping. Time to stop,

So, ha ha, what do you think of my hilarious 'made-up' scenario??

I hope no-one reads this.

Each week between Monday and Sunday I shoot a self-portrait. I post it the following Thursday. The idea is for me to learn and grow. So give me some critique, don't be shy - tell me what you really think! Thanks

PS (Phew, this'll divert you all from the Nerd theme) I've not been feeling great these past few weeks (as I mentioned) but the last 10 days have been pretty dreadful with a series of big migraines. The other day I saw that Clayton mentioned (on Facebook) he'd found a tick crawling on Lexie and one of the comments was from someone who said they'd had Lyme disease because of a tick. It hasn't come out, until now, but I got bitten by a tick on the road-trip and had put it out of my mind (I'm guessing you can tell where this is going already.) Anyway, Jeff had mentioned this Lyme disease as a risk but I'd not thought about it until this little reminder. Intrigued, just because I am an inquisitive fellow, I went to the wikipedia page only to realise that the picture of the infected bite looks rather like my bite (albeit mine is not quite so impressive) and that the list of symptoms really kind of matched what I've been going through lately. All things combined, this was enough to go to the doctor.

I laid it all out in front of the doctor concluding with, "silly me, shouldn't look at medical things on the Internet, eh?" Only for her to say, actually, no it does make sense, she looked up some stuff (I'm guessing she doesn't get too many in like this) and yes, you guessed it, she thinks I have got it. Just as I was about to leave she said, "oh, one of the indicators is a swollen liver, let's just take a look." So I hopped onto the couch, she located the right spot, told me to breath in and poked "OWWWW", she told me to breath in again, poked and "OWWWW." "That hurts then?" she said with a smile, "it's pretty swollen." I can kind of rationalise the other symptoms but that one is a little more tricky to explain away. They've taken 3 tubes of blood for various tests (although apparently even if it comes back negative, I still might have it - rubbish test if you ask me) and I've got 2 weeks of antibiotics (although they look more like horse tranquillisers) and a week off work.

It's easy to post-rationalise some of this stuff, and I don't want to dismiss the issues I've been wrestling with, but it does explain why I've been feeling quite so sluggish at least. As a young man (and a computer scientist) I was deeply logical in so many things, I must admit I still have a tendency to see intellect as a computer program, unaffected by the wetware upon which it runs (my friend, a nurse, called it the "pull yourself together mentality.") As the years have passed, and I suppose I've grown up, I am continually amazed at the interrelationship between the mind and the body.

I'm actually feeling quite upbeat about life today (emotionally at least, if physically exhausted), this is just another exciting tale from my holiday to America, so let's focus on the picture, please?

Photograph taken at an altitude of Fifty two metres at 10:45am on Monday 8th May off the Sea to sky highway 99 and Shannon falls Road, at Shannon falls in Squamish, British Columbia, Canada.

Known as Kwékwetxwm, Shannon Falls holds particular significance for the Squamish First Nations people, the area’s first inhabitants. One legend tells that Say-noth-ka, a two-headed sea serpent, created the falls by repeatedly slithering up and down the mountainside. Shannon falls are British Columbia's third tallest waterfalls, dropping an impressive 335 metres(1,105 feet), with wonderful rock climbs to it's South face at 'Local boys do good', 'The gobsmacking wall', and 'Klahanie Crack'.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Eight metres, at 12:42pm on Monday 9th January 2023, off Constitution Hill and Spur Road in front of Buckingham Palace with the Union flag at full mast, in The Mall next to Green Park and St James's Park in Central London.

The roads were totally sealed off by the Police as sections of The Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons) and The band of the Household Cavalry rode and marched from the Palace up the Mall and back.

The Band of the Household Cavalry was formed in September 2014 by the union of The Band of The Life Guards with The Band of The Blues and Royals, the two mounted bands of the British Army. With over sixty musicians, the band is now the largest regular military band in the UK. The history of The Life Guards began in 1659 at the court of the exiled King Charles II in Holland.

Photograph taken at an altitude of One hundred and seventeen metres at 10:38am on Monday 8th May off the Sea to sky highway 99 and Shannon falls Road, at Shannon falls in Squamish, British Columbia, Canada.

There are several reasons why you might not be getting sound from MP4 videos played from your WD My Cloud on Windows 11. Here's a breakdown of common issues and troubleshooting steps:

1. Audio Codec Compatibility:

Unsupported Codec: MP4 is a container format, meaning it can hold video and audio encoded with various codecs. Your Windows 11 media player might not have the necessary codec to decode the audio stream within the MP4 file. This is a very common issue.

HEVC (H.265) Codec: Many modern MP4 videos use HEVC (High-Efficiency Video Coding) for better compression. Windows 11 often requires a separate HEVC Video Extension, which is typically a paid app from the Microsoft Store, to play these videos with native apps like Films & TV. While there might be workarounds for a free OEM version, it's not always reliable.

Solutions:

Install VLC Media Player: VLC is a highly recommended free and open-source media player that comes with a vast array of built-in codecs, making it excellent for playing almost any video file without needing additional codec packs.

Install HEVC Video Extensions: If you prefer to use Windows' native media players, you might need to purchase and install the "HEVC Video Extensions" from the Microsoft Store.

K-Lite Codec Pack: This is another popular option that provides a comprehensive set of codecs for playing various media formats.

2. Windows 11 Sound Settings:

Muted or Low Volume: Double-check your system's volume settings, including the master volume, application-specific volume for your media player, and any physical volume controls on your speakers or headphones.

Incorrect Output Device: Ensure that the correct audio output device (e.g., your speakers, headphones, or external DAC) is selected as the default playback device in Windows 11 sound settings.

Audio Enhancements: Sometimes, audio enhancements can cause issues. Try disabling them in your sound device's properties.

Sound Troubleshooter: Windows 11 has a built-in audio troubleshooter that can often identify and fix common sound problems.

Solutions:

Click the Speakers icon on the taskbar and verify the volume and selected output device.

Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound. Check your output device and consider turning off "Audio enhancements" under "Advanced settings."

Run the Playing Audio troubleshooter from Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.

3. WD My Cloud Specific Issues:

Plex Media Server: If you're using Plex Media Server on your WD My Cloud, ensure it's configured correctly and that the media files are properly recognized and transcoded if necessary. Sometimes, Plex might have issues with certain audio codecs, or the server itself might be experiencing problems.

Firmware Updates: Ensure your WD My Cloud device has the latest firmware installed, as updates can sometimes improve compatibility and resolve known issues.

Network Connectivity/SMB Issues: While less likely to affect only sound, network access problems (especially with SMB settings in Windows 11) could indirectly cause playback issues.

Solutions:

Check the WD My Cloud dashboard for firmware updates.

If using Plex, check its settings and logs for any errors related to audio or transcoding.

4. General Troubleshooting:

Update Audio Drivers: Outdated or corrupted audio drivers on your Windows 11 PC can cause sound problems. Check for updates through Device Manager or your computer manufacturer's website.

Restart Your PC and WD My Cloud: A simple restart of both your computer and the WD My Cloud can often resolve temporary glitches.

Try a Different Video Player: As mentioned, VLC is a great option. Trying another player can help determine if the issue is with your current player or the file/system itself.

Test with Local Files: Try playing an MP4 video with sound from your local hard drive (not the WD My Cloud) to determine if the issue is specific to the WD My Cloud connection or a broader Windows 11 sound problem.

For more detailed troubleshooting on Windows 11 sound issues, you can check out this video: How to Fix No Sound Problem in Windows 11. This video provides a comprehensive guide to resolving various audio problems within the Windows 11 operating system.

but do I need VLC running or do I download the the MP4 file? there is no audio when running the file on the My Cloud site

You've hit on a crucial point! When you're trying to play an MP4 file from your WD My Cloud and you're getting no audio when running the file on the My Cloud site itself, that changes the troubleshooting focus significantly.

Here's why:

"Running the file on the My Cloud site" usually means you're using the WD My Cloud's built-in web interface or its web-based player. This player has its own set of capabilities and limitations regarding audio and video codecs. It's not using your computer's installed VLC player or Windows' native media players directly.

Therefore, the answer to your question is:

You do NOT need VLC running, nor do you necessarily need to download the MP4 file, IF your primary goal is to get the sound working when playing directly from the My Cloud website.

Why the sound might be missing on the My Cloud website:

Browser Codec Limitations: Your web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc.) might not have the necessary audio codec to play the specific audio stream in that MP4 file. Browsers rely on their own built-in media decoders, which might be more limited than a dedicated media player like VLC.

My Cloud Web Player Limitations: The WD My Cloud's built-in web player is designed for convenience but might not support all audio/video codecs. If the audio codec in your MP4 file is uncommon or very new (like some advanced Dolby formats, or specific high-efficiency codecs), the My Cloud's web player might not be able to decode it.

Transcoding Failure (if applicable): Some NAS devices (including My Cloud if it has a streaming/transcoding feature enabled for its web interface) might attempt to "transcode" (convert) the video/audio on the fly for better browser compatibility. If this transcoding fails for the audio track, you'll get video but no sound.

What to do when there's no audio playing from the My Cloud website:

Since the issue is occurring within the My Cloud's web interface, here are your best approaches:

Download the MP4 file and play it locally:

This is the most reliable way to confirm the file itself is fine.

Go to the My Cloud web interface, navigate to the MP4 file, and look for an option to "Download" it to your Windows 11 computer.

Once downloaded, play it using VLC Media Player on your PC. If VLC plays it with sound, then you know the file's audio is intact, and the issue lies with the My Cloud's web player or your browser.

Access the My Cloud via Network Drive (SMB):

This bypasses the My Cloud's web interface and allows you to play the file directly using your Windows 11 PC's media players (like VLC, or even Films & TV if you have the right codecs installed).

How to do it:

Open File Explorer on your Windows 11 PC.

In the left-hand pane, click "Network" (or "This PC" and then "Network location" if mapped).

You should see your WD My Cloud listed under "Network."

Double-click it to browse its shared folders.

Navigate to your MP4 file.

Right-click the MP4 file, choose "Open with," and select VLC Media Player.

This method leverages your local PC's powerful media players and codecs, not the limited web player.

Check My Cloud Settings (Less Common for Audio):

Log into your My Cloud dashboard. Look for any settings related to media streaming, web access, or transcoding. While less common to have an "audio mute" setting, it's worth a quick check for anything obvious. Ensure the My Cloud's firmware is up to date.

In summary:

If you're only getting no audio when playing via the My Cloud's web interface, the problem is likely with the web player's codec support.

Your best immediate solution is to either download the file and play it with VLC, or access the file directly via your network drive (SMB share) and play it with VLC. This leverages VLC's superior codec support on your local machine.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Eight metres at 07:46am on Wednesday 17th May 2023 off Lone Cone Road from the front garden of a seventy year old house I was renting in Campbell Street, Tofino in British Columbia in Canada.

Eastern Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are native to the southern BC mainland, one of many different sub species of Raccoon, but are an introduced invasive species on Haida Gwaii. They were introduced in the 1940s to enhance the local fur trade, but they represent a significant threat to ground-nesting marine birds. My family refer to them as 'Trash Panda's', but I love them. They are also known as Racoons, Coons or Common Racoons

This is a compilation of a few clips that I shot on way to and from work the last few days to test the low light performance of the Panasonic GH2. I must say that I'm very impressed so far with the little gem. I'm a heavy user of the Lensbaby TT since it gives me the amazing ability to shoot and tilt just about any F-mount lens in the camerabag, being a Nikon user. My latest gear aquisition was the Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1,4/50 ZF for Nikon, it's an awesome lens for the GH2 when it comes to video work, but also for stills because it's actually quite easy to focus manually with the EVF.

There is noise/grain in some of the footage but remember it was shot in darkness, pretty much wide open and at the higher ISO range, noise is most visible in the 1:1 crop mode scenes (EX-tele). Most the clips are ungraded except for the "vintage scratched film" look added to one of the clips. In the first scenes I used a slow shutter speed (1/5 and 1/13) and did a speed up in post for a quick and rather jerky timelapse. Be aware that the original 1080p file available for download is XDCAM EX codec, so you'll need QuickTime and FCP on Mac OS X for the playback or re-wrap the files to MXF and then use Sony XDCAM viewer for Windows.

iPod is a brand of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple Inc. and launched on October 23, 2001. As of 2008, the current product line-up includes the hard drive-based iPod classic, the touchscreen iPod touch, the video-capable iPod nano and the screenless iPod shuffle. Former products include the compact iPod mini and the spin-off iPod photo (since re-integrated into the main iPod classic line). iPod classic models store media on an internal hard drive, while all other models use flash memory to enable their smaller size (the discontinued mini used a Microdrive miniature hard drive). As with many other digital music players, iPods, excluding the iPod touch, can also serve as external data storage devices. Storage capacity varies by model.

Apple's iTunes software is used to transfer music to the devices. As a jukebox application, iTunes stores a music library on the user's computer and can play, burn and rip music from a CD. It can also transfer photos, videos, games, and calendars to iPod models supporting those features. Apple focused its development on the iPod's unique user interface and its ease of use, rather than on technical capability. As of September 2007, the iPod had sold over 110 million units worldwide making it the best-selling digital audio player series in history.[1]

Microcontroller

* iPod first to third generations — Two ARM 7TDMI-derived CPUs running at 90 MHz.

* iPod fourth and fifth generations, iPod mini, iPod nano first generation — Variable-speed ARM 7TDMI CPUs, running at a peak of 80 MHz to save battery life.

* iPod nano second generation — Samsung System-On-Chip, based around an ARM processor.[16]

* iPod shuffle first generation — SigmaTel STMP3550 chip that handles both the music decoding and the audio circuitry.[17]

Audio chip

* All iPods (except the shuffle and 6G) use audio codecs developed by Wolfson Microelectronics.

* Sixth generation iPods use a Cirrus Logic audio codec chip.

Storage medium

* iPod first to sixth generation — 45.7 mm (1.8 in) hard drives (ATA-6, 4200 rpm with proprietary connectors) made by Toshiba

Photograph taken at an altitude of Eight metres at 19:26pm on Wednesday 24th May 2023 off Homathko Drive at Island View Beach on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

The Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), takes it's name from the Latin for 'Sea Raven', and the Phalacrocoracidae family consists of forty or more species of aquatic birds known as shags and cormorants. There are three species of Cormorant native to British Columbia, and seen here is a Double Crested Cormorant, the largest of the three variants.

Island View beach is a fifty one hectare regional park located on Island View Road and Homathko Road with a beautiful stretch of coastline along the Eastern shore of the Saanich Peninsula and panoramic views of Haro Strait, James Island and Mount Baker over in Whatcom County, Washington State, USA.

It is roughly twenty kilometres from downtown Victoria, seventeen kilometers from the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal and twelve kilometres from Victoria airport. The District of Central Saanich is situated on the traditional territory of the W̱SÁNEĆ people which includes W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip) and SȾÁUTW̱ (Tsawout) First Nations who all signed the Saanich Indian Territorial Declaration.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Six metres at 12:15pm on Saturday 6th May off Circle Drive and Chestnut Row in the grounds of Beacon Hill Park, with 740,000 square metres of parkland, in Victoria on British Columbia, Canada.

The Indian peafowl or peacock (Pavo cristatus) is also known as the common peafowl, and blue peafowl, and is a peafowl species native to the Indian subcontinent. It has been introduced to many other countries. Male peafowl are referred to as peacocks, and female peafowl are referred to as peahens, although both sexes are often referred to colloquially as a "peacock".

A Peacocks length from bill to tail can measure100 to 115 cm (39 to 45 in) and to the end of a fully grown train as much as 195 to 225 cm (77 to 89 in) and weigh 4–6 kg (8.8–13.2 lb). The females, or peahens, are smaller at around 95 cm (37 in) in length and weigh 2.75–4 kg (6.1–8.8 lb).
