Photograph taken at an altitude of Two metres at 11.19am on Monday 29th May 2014 off 2903 Ocean Boulevard, Victoria, on the Esquimalt Lagoon Migratory Bird Sanctuary, on the Juan De Fuca Strait, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

The Lagoon is one of seven Migratory Bird Sanctuaries in British Columbia, and an important stopover for birds journeying between North and South America. Visitors include geese and Swans, Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons, plus many other species of birds.

The Great Blue Heron (Ardea Herodias) is a wading bird in the Heron family Ardeidae and found in North America, Central America, the Caribbean and Galapagos Islands. One of the largest of Herons, it has a head to tail length of 01-137 centimetres (36-54 inches) and a wingspan of 187-201 centimetres (66-79 inches).

They are found where my family live, and naturally very wary of mankind, flying off as soon as you are within fifty to one hundred yards of them.

In fact this is almost usual station locomotive. There was the international division of a labor in Communist block. And Czech built ChKD Praha of 3o-3o

(or Co-Co) layout Diesel locomotive has been chosen as standard station/shunting locomotive for Soviet Railroads and for other Communist countries. In Soviet Union it was named ChME-3 (Czech-built, station, with electric transmission). It has recommended itself from the best side and circa 7500 pieces have been built. It was best Czechs' business for all their history. And now ChME-3 are carrying almost all station works in all post-Soviet countries, also being frequentely used in suburban traffic.

But this piece is unique simulteniously being 'named' locomotive. Named locomotives are not rare all over the world. But in this special case term 'named' means that this is a kind of award or moral stimulation. This practice is still kept since 1920 when for some locomotives names of war and revolution heroes have been given. Such 'named' locomotives were credited for best crews for combat heroism and labour achievements - as a sort of award, apart of honor badges, medals, etc. It was considered as a great honor for locomotives. But nobless obligee! And locomotive staff (or 'brigade' as it is called here) had to keep such locomotive in excellent technical state. And also to fulfil combat or labour feats equal to those of a hero to give his name.

Locomotive brigades were usually 'attached' to the one and the same locomotive for years and decades. It became a real second house for a staff. Therefore locomotives were beloved and pampered by crew. Locomotive shining by fresh painting and polished brass details was the subject of pride of a staff - it belongs to railroaders 'Codecs of honor'. At the steam age such cases were often when locomotive staff was unsatisfied by standard paint given by a railroad. And a crew bought some 'special' paint from it's personal funds.

We may see from these shots that nothing changed at this branch despite the change of political system. And 'named' locomotives tradition is kept almost a century.

And this locomotive is named in honor of N.E. Kalinichenko, the full Knight of Soldier fame order, receiving during the WWII the stars of all three degreess. Apropos the Soldier fame is rare award being given only for privates or sergeants and only for combat feats carried in specially hard and dangerous conditions. From 15 millions men and women who served in Red Army during WWII only 2656 became full Knights of this order - including four women.

This award system repeates exectly the Soldier's St Georgian Cross - the highest and most valuable soldier's award of Russian Empire. Both orders - Empire and Soviet were carried on the same insignia band with orange-n-black strips. So called Georgian or Guardian colors. It's well depicted on shields on both sides of locomotive.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Seven metres at 07:48am on Wednesday 17th May 2023 off Lone Cone Road from the front garden of a seventy year old house I was renting in Campbell Street, Tofino in British Columbia in Canada.

Eastern Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are native to the southern BC mainland, one of many different sub species of Raccoon, but are an introduced invasive species on Haida Gwaii. They were introduced in the 1940s to enhance the local fur trade, but they represent a significant threat to ground-nesting marine birds. My family refer to them as 'Trash Panda's', but I love them. They are also known as Racoons, Coons or Common Racoons

Photograph taken at an altitude of Fourteen metres at 20:48pm on Friday 26th May 2023 around sunset (Sunset was at 20.59pm), off Qwuc Chus Lane and Patricia Bay Highway 17 on Tsawout First Nation land, East Saanich Indian Reserve No. 2 (a 241 hectares site), on Vancouver Island in British Columbia in Canada.

A beautiful sunset as the light began to fade away, and from the horizon behind trees an aeroplane climbed the sky, leaving behind some wonderful contrails in the evening sky.

The Tsawout people are a member of the Sencot'en Alliance and one of five bands of the Saanich Nation, along with Tsartlip, Tseycum, Malahat and Pauquachin. In the 1850s they were signatories to the Douglas Treaties and they speak the SENĆOŦEN language. Nick Claxton was chief until April 2021 when Harvey Underwood was elected as his replacement. In January 2023 there qwer around 1600 inhabitants of which one third were Tsawout First Nations people.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Three metres at 11.14am on Monday 29th May 2014 off 2903 Ocean Boulevard, Victoria, on the Esquimalt Lagoon Migratory Bird Sanctuary, on the Juan De Fuca Strait, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

The Lagoon is one of seven Migratory Bird Sanctuaries in British Columbia, and an important stopover for birds journeying between North and South America. Visitors include geese and Swans, Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons, plus many other species of birds.

The Great Blue Heron (Ardea Herodias) is a wading bird in the Heron family Ardeidae and found in North America, Central Ameria, the Caribean and Galapagos Islands. One of the largest of Herons, it has a head to tail length of 01-137 centimtres (36-54 inches) and a wingspan of 187-201 centimtres (66-79 inches). They are found where my family live, and naturally very wary of mankind, flying off as soon as you are within fifty to one hundred yards of them.

As promised, the "long photo" version of the previous photos.

This is 328 frames with a 5-minute interval between shots, taken over a period of about 27 hours.

There's a flash of light about halfway through: My room faces east, and I'm in a canyon. I get about 30 minutes of direct sunlight in the morning after the sun clears the canyon on the east side and before it goes above the eaves (forgot to close the shades before I left for work). It was otherwise lit with 2 color-correct studio lights with umbrellas.

I've been having a devil of a time figuring out which video codecs work with flickr (this is the fifth time I've tried to upload this). I think I've got it sorted now.

A shame I can't post the full-resolution version of this (it's really stunning), but it's about twice the size that flickr allows.

The Canon EOS R5 is Canon's most advanced, complete camera in a long, long time. It has a few flaws (most notably a tendency to overheat when shooting the most demanding video codecs), but it has a very long list of virtues, including high resolution (45Mpx), great high ISO performance and dynamic range, fast burst rates (12 FPS mechanical and 20 FPS Electronic), deep buffers, great IBIS (sensor stabilization), and a truly awesome focus system. Add an amazing amount of video options and great ergonomics, and this is a camera that I simply love using. Bottom line: I bought one. Here's my review coverage:

Photograph taken at an altitude of Two metres (Sea level) at 19:08pm on Wednesday 17th May 2023 on an unamed and uninhabited by mankind wilderness, some distance from Dawley Passage Provincial Park and Meares Island in the Alberni-Clayoquot region of British Columbia in Canada.

I was stationed in a seventy year old house I was renting in Campbell Street, Tofino in British Columbia in Canada and booked a place on a twenty three feet long Zodiac inflatable in full life saving gear with Remote Passages Marine Excursions at 51 Wharf Street in Tofino.

This is a magnifcicent full grown adult American Black Bear (Ursus Americanus), medium sized bears native to North America, and found in abundance in the Yukon territory and Alaska and remote island in British Columbia such as this. Black bears have a small tail, up to nine inches long foot length and males can weigh up to 250kgs. They have poor long distance vision but excellent smell, and this adult knew we were away in the water before we ever saw it.

American Robin (Turdus migratorius) is a migratory bird of the true thrush genus and Turdidae, the wider thrush family. It is named after the European robin because of its reddish-orange breast, though the two species are not closely related. It has roughly a two year lifespan.

Photograph taken at 11:50am on Monday 20th May 2025 at an altitude of Sixty two metres in the Grounds of Warnham Nature Reserve in Horsham, West Sussex. Here we see a Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), in flight. Found in Europe, Asia and parts of Africa, these birds can stand a metre tall and weigh up to 4.4ibs.

The Millpond dates back to the 16th Century and parts of the woodland dates back even further to the 13th Century. A beautiful location for a walk, or to sit amongst nature and so see birds and butterflies in their natural habitat.

Ever since SEGA teased Sonic Forces last year I have been eager to see what this game has to offer, especially with premise, and after playing through enough of the game, I would like to share my thoughts, keep in mind I don’t consider this a review, and apologize in advance if I mention any other games/shows outside of this game, you’ll know why, by the way there might be spoilers.

Now the main story of this game follows the idea: “what if after all these years, Dr. Eggman finally was able to take over the world?” This is an interesting concept, and only has been done in the Sonic SatAM, Sonic Underground, and to some extent the Comic Book series, and to the games credit it tries to fulfill that, succeeds in some way, especially how Sonic, and Co. handle the situation, and Eggman is treated as an actual threat this time around, and I do like how the new character Infinite reminds me of some of the Eggbosses from the recent Sonic comic, you know a evil Mobian character teaming with the mad scientist to fulfill his malevolent goal in taking over the world, kind of a pity that he’s not fleshed out like Clove the Pronghorn, and Beauregard Rabbot where they have reasons for working with Eggman, whereas Infinite (reviled in a comic prequel that was released prior to the game’s release), was part of a mercenary squad that was hired by Eggman, and wants to get even with Shadow, then take out Sonic with a dangerous power (power that I’ll explain later in gameplay)

There are ideas in this game that aren’t fully implemented, or needed. For Starters Sonic is shown to be beaten by Infinite at the beginning of the game, captured, and nearly exiled into SPACE, while that is about dire it gets for the Blue Blur, there isn’t any build up to his defeat, or any serious repercussions after, it just happens, SEGA just doesn’t want to focus on hurting their mascot for long periods of time, and it hurts the story in my opinion, speaking of which Classic Sonic makes a return, not only he did reappeared, and apparently he is from another dimension. Even though Sonic Generations specifically mentioned that he’s from the earlier part of Modern Sonic’s heroic career. Another problem I have with Classic Sonic’s reappearance is his interactions with Tails, while he was distraught over losing his older brother figure, and failing to fix a damaged E-123 Omega, it did make some sense that seeing another “Sonic” to help boost his moral, I do find it odd that he got attached the other Sonic, even after reuniting with his Sonic. I really don’t think that Classic Sonic being in the story was unnecessary, and again holds the story back, it also doesn’t help that he might make another appearance in a future game, seriously he should’ve only been in Sonic Generations, it only worked there.

Lastly my biggest grip is the Resistance, or at least the named members who are part of it, while we see a majority of the characters that have appeared in the last few games (minus Blaze, Cream n Cheese, and Big are MIA for whatever reason), and we even see Omega make a reappearance even if his screentime is limited, and shows up at the last minute. The weirdest thing about the whole thing is that the leader of the Resistance, is Knuckles the Echidna, granted this isn’t his Sonic Boom counterpart where his intelligence is similar to Caboose from Red vs Blue, but I really can’t see him leading an entire Army even if its shown that he’s handling the position well, now I feel like SEGA missed an opportunity to introduce the characters from the SatAM cartoon cause in their series they usually fight against a tyrannical Eggman, or any other similar threat, it would’ve have made more sense for Sally Acorn to lead the resistance than Knuckles, saying that’s what she does. Seriously I would love to see the Freedom Fighters interacting with the game cast in a mainseries Sonic game, but for whatever stupid reason they’re not, and it just makes me very bitter about the whole thing (well more cause I’m already bitter about Archie canceling the Sonic Comic as is).

While the main plot was water downed in a sense, I still think it’s a solid tale and I’m kind of glad that SEGA tried it in some cases I fill like it does a relatively good job, and I was invested during my play through course I would mind if we revisit elements of this game in future projects.

Moving onto the other part of Sonic Forces, the gameplay I feel works, and I enjoyed it, even if the five modes do feel identical.

Starting with Sonic, he returns to the gameplay that was established in Sonic Unleashed, where you try race to the end of the level, boosting, and homing attacking your way through enemy robots to reach the goal as fast as you can, it’s also similar to Shadow’s were after completing the Shadow Episode DLC you can play as him in some of the levels once you have a beaten them, outside of his running, and boosting animation he’s just a reskin of Sonic, the only thing that differentiates Shadow is that he can chain enemies in a single homing attack, weirdly enough the only thing not in this game is the ability to drift around corners, and it can lead to some cheap deaths if you aren’t prepared, and other than that it still playable, and enjoyed going through the levels with them.

Since Classic Sonic is back that means the focus of side scrolling gameplay returns as well even though there are moments in Modern Sonic’s levels, clearly SEGA doesn’t know the meaning of redundant, yeah he still plays like he did on the Genesis, and in Sonic Generations. Don’t get me wrong it still fun to play as Sonic’s classic version, but the novelty of him returning has dried out since Generation, and it takes away the chance for another character to be used.

New for any installment the Sonic series, well officially is the Custom Avatar function were you can make your own playable character to play in the game, and to tell the truth I thought this was an interesting inclusion I wouldn’t mind seeing this return in the future, and do like a good chunk of customizable options, and I like how you can see your character in the cut scenes, and wearing the gear you give them reminds me of Halo Reach with the Spartan character. While I still want to see my favorite characters in the games, you could make the avatar look like the Comic characters if you desire.

Moving on how they play, it’s a tweaked variation of Modern Sonic’s, you still run around, still grind, and can perform a homing attack in the same vain, the difference comes from the avatar’s weapon, and Spiderman-like grappling hook, were they can swing to different areas, and can pull themselves to the enemies, but your main method of attack is the Wispon Device, that utilizes the Wisps introduced in Sonic Colors, and the type of attack varies on what type you are currently using in the level, for example the Burst Wispon is a Flamethrower, while the Cube immobilize enemies close by then turn them into rings, also if you pick a capsule of Wisps that correlate to the Wispon that you’re using it can activate a secondary function, with the Burst shooting you upwards, and the Cube creating a platform for you to stand on. I actually like this type of gameplay the most and I would like to see this comeback in a future game with more refinement.

The last bit of gameplay is how Sonic and your Avatar teaming up in a stage, or boss fight. The level has them going through the stage, and you also use the character’s attacks just by using the same button layout if you were playing them separately, for example if you were to use Sonic’s homing attack he’ll do it, same thing goes for the Avatar character, you don’t have to use a button to switch between them, and I find that welcoming weirdly enough, and at a certain place in the level Sonic, and your Avatar are required to quick time in order for a team up boost, while visually interesting I find this aspect to be unnecessary. I’m split down the middle with this type of combined gameplay, and while it’s fun to play through, I find it mostly pointless.

Another recurring staple for Sonic games are the boss fights, again I have mixed feeling towards which boss you go against, If you’re going against Infinite chances are you’re going to enjoy it the most considering that if you touch the cubes he creates with his powers, you’ll have to deal with extra obstacles that can hinder your progress, so it’s can be an interesting challenge while trying to deal damage to him, with Eggman one fight is weird to play through, and the second fight is a bit more interesting. The Metal Sonic and Zavok fights were the most underwhelming, and in Metal Sonic’s case underutilized considering its involvement in the plot.

The last bits of gameplay I feel like addressing is the ranking system, the Avatar Rental, collecting, S.O.S. missions, and unlocking gear, and accessories. The Ranking system to me is very straight forward, it works on a point system depend on how many enemies you destroy, the ring you collect, and importantly how fast you beaten the level in a certain time limit, its feels similar to past games, if chosen you can summon another person’s Avatar that you can swap out during the stage, it’s a okay system it can be fun even if I don’t use that function. While playing through the game you can collect Red Star Rings, yet another staple since Sonic Colors, as of my play through I don’t know if they unlock anything like music or concept art so sadly I cannot comment any further, speaking of rings, the ring counter does not go past one hundred, and doesn’t count past that, I find that weird.

The S.O.S. Missions are kinda weird depending on what you have to do, they crop up on the levels you have beaten, it’s not really interesting, and I do get confused on what you need to accomplish. Luckily there are bonus mission that can be completed, and are easier to understand.

As you complete the levels you can unlock gear to even further your Avatar looks, my only problem I find is there isn’t a clear indication on what you can unlock, same goes for the Wispons. I would’ve preferred that they implemented a store where you can buy whatever you want with the rings you collected in the levels, like in Sonic Chronicles.

As far as visuals go, I find them to very pleasing even if it looks like a war zone, the cutscenes are very well animated, although I wish they used them in place of the Metal Gear like radio codecs that appear in between the levels, the music I find is a little underwhelming, outside Fist bump, and Infinite’s theme do work for what they are, and the one song they play during the credits is done well too, but most most of the other soundtracks just fall into the background, and I find the lyrics used for the Avatar Stages to be unnecessary.

All in all I did get some enjoyment playing through Sonic Forces, and I look forward to completing it, I highly recommend it especially considering how it cost thirty bucks (forty if it’s the bonus edition). I hope that I was able to show my thoughts on this game.

By the way I’m trying something new, so any feedback would be appreciated because I would like to do more of these.

It's sunday, it's summer and of course that means rain showers and rare sunlight in the UK! No matter, a sunflower always makes us happy, so here is one in our garden.....

The Common sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant with a daisy-like flower face. Its scientific name comes from the Greek words helios (“sun”) and anthos (“flower”). The flowers come in many colours (yellow, red, orange, maroon, brown), but they are commonly bright yellow with brown centres that ripen into heavy heads filled with seeds. Sunflowers make excellent cut flowers, and many attract bees, birds, and butterflies.

The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus), derives it's name from the Greek for 'Sea eagle', and the 'bald' denotation actually derives from an older meaning of 'white headed'.Bald Eagles can be up to forty inches in length with a wingspan up to seven and a half feet and can weigh up to 6.3kgs. The females are generally 25% larger than the males.

Niagara Falls or Golden Niagara Falls is a waterfall in Niagara Canyon, part of Niagara Creek in Goldstream Park near Langford, British Columbia, Canada. It drops 47.5 metres (156 ft) down a narrow gully into a pool and a flowing creek and is roughly the same height as it's more famous namesake.
