Lantana in my front yard. The Nikon P1000 can take macros 1/2 inch away from the subject. For the past 2 days I have been testing my new Nikon P1000 camera out in my yard and neighborhood. I am very impressed. You have to haul a 3.5 lb camera and a hefty tripod. I used my Manfrotto 3130 tripod with a fluid head that weighs 8 lbs for telephoto shots. The fluid head facilitates video pans, but even it drifted down while shooting at far out lengths such as 3000 mm indicating a need for counter weights such as sand bags or a heavier duty tripod. You also have to use a remote control for shutter depressions and controlling the camera. I purchased a Nikon ML-L7 remote which did the job very well.
The Coolpix P1000 does not use .nef for raw files. It uses .nrw format. I could not use Adobe PS CS6 to read these files. I started saving files in both raw and jpg formats instead of raw exclusively as I do on my Nikon DLSR camera. I had to download Nikon Capture NX-D which came with Nikon Picture Control and Nikon Transfer 2 which I have not tested yet. I Downloaded and installed a Nikon NRW codec. I could not see NRW files in Photoshop CS6, Adobe Bridge CS6 or View NX V2. But I could see them in Capture NX-D, Windows photos, Win Explorer, Win movie Maker, Photo Gallery and Win Photo Viewer.
It pays to purchase a 77 mm clear filter cover because the possibility of scratching the huge lens looms very high.
The Jpg image size is stored in a 12:9 ratio. My other Nikon cameras are sized in a12:8 ratio. Also many functions are accessed by menu rather than buttons common on Nikon DLSR’s.
I have not tested the bird or moon modes on the P1000 yet, but they look promising on paper.
All in all I am very pleased with the Nikon P1000 and look forward to having a lot of fun with it, especially for birding.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Eleven metres at 16:57pm on Sunday 3rd 2023 off 1st Street and Beacon Avenue looking back towards the Bevan Avenue Fishing Pier in Sidney on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.
The site which the Town of Sidney now sits on is called "SET,TINES", which means "chest sticking out," in reference to the way the land juts out into the water. The W̱SÁNEĆ First Nation People have lived on the Saanich Peninsula for thousands of years, creating and dwelling in winter villages throughout the Region before any contact with European settlers. They are saltwater people, with the importance of the sea being paramount to their daily life.
In 1891, fifty acres of land owned by the Brethour family was subdivided in lots and registered as the Township of Sidney. By the close of 1892, there was a general store, a post office, a boat building shop, and a hotel. The name “Sidney” apparently came about when Julius Brethour, who became the first president of the Victoria and Sidney Railway gave it it's name. Sidney was incorporated as a village on September 30th, 1952, has enjoyed steady growth, and now boasts a population in excess of 12,300 residents according to the 2021 Census.
In the distance we see Mt Baker in Washington State, USA, an active glaciated andesitic stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the North Cascades. Standing 3,286 metres tall, she was first ascended in 1868, her last eruption recorded in 1880.
The four Salishan language speaking First Nation bands nearest to Mount Baker know her by different names. Known to the Halkomelem as Kwelxá:lxw, Kwelshán (wounded by a shot) to the Lummi,Teqwúbe7 (snow-capped peak) to Lushootseed speakers along the Skagit River, and to the Nooksack language, the ice- and snow-covered top is Kweq’ Smánit (white mountain) while the high meadows around the peak are Kwelshán (shooting place)”.
There are also unsubstanciated references to Mt Baker as Komo Kulshan (pronounced kō-ō’mah’ kool-shän’), the name for the Middle Fork which originates from the glaciers such as Deming and Thunder on the western slopes, though Koma or Komo Kulshan is not a native name for the mountain in any of the twenty three collective Salishan languages.

I took Amancay, who had came up from Hood Rivers, OR for the Seattle Flickr Garage Shoot VII, on a photo excursion / whirlwind tour of Seattle. We had dinner down by the water front at Ivar's, and the seagulls have learned that they could be quite well fed by hanging out around there...
... so I went back to the car to grab the high speed video camera, the flashes and pocket wizards, and the super clamp. Fish for the humans and chips for the seagulls kept us entertained.
Please excuse the fact that these are unedited videos. AVCHD codec is proving to be a royal pain in the tailpipe to edit.

We discovered this old video of Mark goofing around from back in 2000.
It was in some weird codec called CJPEG that turned up almost no useful results on google. Fortunately FFMPEG was able to convert this to a usable format. No clue if the original video had color or sound, but this was all that was salvagable.

First mainline steam recording for the year!
Ex-BR Standard 7 no. '70000, Britannia' is seen charging past Noose Lane road crossing near Portobello Junction, running twenty minutes early, on a light engine move from Kidderminster to its home base in Crewe.
The engine has recently returned to operational order after an overhaul and had been on test trails at the Severn Valley Railway since January. This is the locomotive's first run on national network metals since August of 2020.

This was the last image my new digital converter box displayed, before never displaying anything again. I left it on overnight, tuned to PBS, and when I awoke, the output was this. When I tried to restart it, I got the same image. When I unplugged it and plugged it back in, it was toast and never displayed an image again. My Digital Television converter locked up permanently.
Then it dumps the processor registers to the display,
and this is what I see - half a blue screen of death. It must be Microsoft.

The original was processed from a 1.4 gb avi file made from a couple of clips from a Fujifilm F30 camera, taken in low light. It was converted to mpeg4 using the h264 codec by the free application Super© video converter, which I got here: www.erightsoft.net/S6Kg1.html (They warn you not to download it from another site because it might be infected with malware.) I've processed mpeg4 with the h264 codec in QuickTime Pro and it has taken an extremely long time to process. This converter is extremely fast. I am happy to see that Flickr will show mpeg4 videos. I have no idea why this unpleasant opening image is showing. It was not on the original video!

The ornamental gardens here feature some magnificent red and yellow Tulips, (Tulipa of the family Liliaceae). This is a painted version of my original photograph.
