This is just a quick video I did of some shots from my apartment balcony.

It's worth noting the first shot you see is 128000 ISO. This camera was seeing clouds and light my own eyes had no idea were there.

It's pretty amazing stuff actually. I've also tested the rolling shutter and it seems it only occurs at certain distances and certain speeds.

Getting a tripod would almost completely eliminate this side effect.

Note: This was uploaded using a compressed codec crunched down from 1080. I did not want to wait around for a 500meg upload. So the video isnt as crisp as it would normally be.

For the past 2 days I have been testing my new Nikon P1000 camera out in my yard and neighborhood. I am very impressed. You have to haul a 3.5 lb camera and a hefty tripod. I used my Manfrotto 3130 tripod with a fluid head that weighs 8 lbs for telephoto shots. The fluid head facilitates video pans, but even it drifted down while shooting at far out lengths such as 3000 mm indicating a need for counter weights such as sand bags or a heavier duty tripod. You also have to use a remote control for shutter depressions and controlling the camera. I purchased a Nikon ML-L7 remote which did the job very well.

The Coolpix P1000 does not use .nef for raw files. It uses .nrw format. I could not use Adobe PS CS6 to read these files. I started saving files in both raw and jpg formats instead of raw exclusively as I do on my Nikon DLSR camera. I had to download Nikon Capture NX-D which came with Nikon Picture Control and Nikon Transfer 2 which I have not tested yet. I Downloaded and installed a Nikon NRW codec. I could not see NRW files in Photoshop CS6, Adobe Bridge CS6 or View NX V2. But I could see them in Capture NX-D, Windows photos, Win Explorer, Win movie Maker, Photo Gallery and Win Photo Viewer.

It pays to purchase a 77 mm clear filter cover because the possibility of scratching the huge lens looms very high.

The Jpg image size is stored in a 12:9 ratio. My other Nikon cameras are sized in a12:8 ratio. Also many functions are accessed by menu rather than buttons common on Nikon DLSR’s.

I have not tested the bird or moon modes on the P1000 yet, but they look promising on paper.

All in all I am very pleased with the Nikon P1000 and look forward to having a lot of fun with it, especially for birding.

Okay, first thing first, it's sorta hard to do an in depth review of Quicktime X when John Siracusa has done such a thorough no-FUD-allowed review of Quicktime X over at Arstechnica.

Okay, but if you don't want to read his rather long article, the gist of the new Quicktime is this: Quicktime X is a stopgap measure for the Quicktime platform to come. But that's true for much of Snow Leopard. Apple is laying the groundwork for a lot of great things in 10.7.

Quicktime X is really a GPU centered app for video content. The old Quicktime just wasn't up to task. According to John Siracusa, Quicktime X is actually a port of the Quicktime API used on the iPhone (it even has the same trimming tool), which had to be reengineered from the desktop Quicktime in order to run smoothly on a mobile device.

Most of the editing functions are still available in Quicktime 7, which is provided as an optional install on the Snow Leopard disk. Quicktime X actually runs older codecs with the help of an Objective-C framework known as QTKit.

Of course, Quicktime X does have a few new features. Mostly, the ability to record your screen, audio or the video input from your Mac's iSight camera. The iSight feature has been available in Photo Booth for some time. The audio and screen recording features are a first for OS X. I found the Screen recording feature to be quite efficient at recording high quality video of my screen at low bit rates, but third party apps actually have more features, which is a good thing since Quicktime X won't actually replace the market for third party software in this area.

Quicktime X pretty much gives you one setting for recording your screen, but that setting, whatever it may be, is completely optimized to give you something that is both small and completely clean without a lot of loss in definition.

So while Apps such as ScreenFlow, Snapz Pro, and iShowU will give you more control and features like Callouts (really cool), Video presets, and the ability to edit your recording area, Quicktime X is sufficient for people who just want to record something really quick and zip it over to a friend on iChat.

Of course, I found that my version of iShowU was quite capable of recording a video at half the size of a comparable Quicktime X screencast video, but Quicktime should be okay for 95 percent of the casual Mac users out there.

Mainly interior shots this time. This time I tried using the HEVC codec I used on the last video but truncated the 4k footage to 1080p with better results than I managed with part one of this video despite the light being poorer. Please excuse the wobbly footage as I'm still not used to walking while taking footage. I may also have worked out why previous attempts to publish footage failed. It's not the file size that's the problem but when you use the uploader here don't press the upload button before it tells you it's ready to publish. Just leave it sitting on the upload page.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Zero metres at 19:33pm on Thursday 25th May 2023 around sunset at Patricia Bay , a body of salt water that extends East from the Saanich Inlet and forms part of the North Saanich shoreline in the District of North Saanich in British Columbia. It features a beautiful park which is at the south end of the Scoter Trail. Formerly known as Union Bay, the bay was named after Princess Patricia of Connaught, daughter of the Duke of Connaught who was Governor General in 1912.

The park has ties to transportation and the waterfront, and their pivotal role in the development of North Saanich. It is also tied to the development of the Victoria International Airport and military aviation efforts during the Second World War. In 1937, the airport was developed as one of six Royal Canadian Air Force Station training facilities on Vancouver Island.

The land was originally settled by the Tseycum First Nation (Union Bay Indian Reserve No.4) , one of four Saanich villages of Southern Vancouver Island in the area and part of the Northern Straits Coast Salish language group.

In the Sencoten langauge Tseycum is spelled Wsikem and means Land of Clay. The languages spoken include Lkwungen, Malchosen, Semiahmoo, SENĆOŦEN andT’Sou-ke and in 2023 the Chief is Tanya Jimmy, who was elected in July 2019. The Tseycum people have five reserves located at:

Bare Island 9, Goldstream 13, Pender Island 8, Saturna Island 7 and Union Bay 4.

Sun taken through a Coronado Solarmax 60mm with the Canon 1100D using EOS Movie Maker. 90 seconds AVI stacked in Registax, with wavelets. Used two layers, one for prominences and one for surface detail. This was a first try at using EOS movie maker. I did run into codec issue with Regixtax so I had to re-process the AVI in PPIP (Planetary Imaging PreProcess) to convert it to another codec Registax can read. May 6th 2013

The moon was so gorgeous last night that I just had to experiment with image stacking. I took four different videos, totaling more than 10 minutes of footage, of the moon drifting across the frame.

Lens: Olympus E-Zuiko AUTO-T 200mm f/4.0 set to f/11

Camera: Panasonic G6 in Extended Teleconversion Mode

Shutter: 1/120s

ISO: 200

Frames were roughly aligned, and cropped in PIPP, the best 50% were aligned and stacked in AutoStakkert!2, and the final stack was sharpened using wavelets in Registax. Basically, I adapted the techniques in this tutorial (arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?t=1224931), only used the free tools, and I forgot that a faster shutter would be better.

Pitfalls: I could not for the life of me get PIPP to join multiple AVCHD files, Autostakkert to open the AVI files PIPP created (despite it having native support for UT Video Codec files since version 2.3.0.3 - working around this issue took 18 gigs of intermediary files), and I couldn't get Adobe Lightroom to open the TIFFs Registax made.

Sony Digital8 DCR-TRV 120 Camcorder, with Firewire, plays back Standard 8, Hi-8, Digital8, and D-Eight Data Cartridges into iMovie on any recent Apple Macintosh computer. It's a somewhat older camera, from around the year 2000. BTW, there is no video generation loss the Sony Digital8, Firewire, and an Apple Macintosh PC. You will have to save all the computer data as DV or uncompressed, to prevent software compression -decompression (codecs) generation loss. I also use this camcorder for converting movie cine film to computer, because the digital effect slow shutter seems to get rid of flicker. (I think 15 fps and PAL and three bladed shutter on the projector)

The SM1000 speaker-mike with built-in codec2 voice codec and freedv modem.
