And now for a bit of bokehlicious goodness from the 5DIV and the Tamron 85 VC. This shot features a lilac seed pod after a heavy rain. I've noted that the color rendition is really, really nice from the 5D Mark IV. There are some deserved criticisms of it's restrictive 4K codec, but as a stills camera it may be Canon's best yet. You can see my unboxing video of the 5D Mark IV here: bit.ly/2cy82xb or see an image gallery with a lot of photos along with some 4K stills grabs here: bit.ly/2cwFmEX
Technical Information: Canon EOS 5D Mark IV + Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 VC, Processed in Adobe Lightroom CC, Photoshop CC, and Alien Skin Exposure X (use code "dustinabbott" to get 10% off)

Photograph taken at an altitude of Four metres, at 13:31pm on Monday 9th January 2023, off Hyde Park Corner and Park Lane A4202 in the grounds of Hyde park, a Grade 1 listed Royal Park (the largest of) of London.
Here we see, Sciurus Carolinensis (Eastern Gray Squirrel or Grey Squirrel), a tree squirrel native to North America and first introduced to the UK in the 1870's. Though it was largely responsible for the decimation of our own native red squirrel population, those are now on the increase and found in certain parts of the UK including Scotland. The Greys are still an ecologically essential natural forester regenerator.
Spanning an area of 350 acres, the park is divided by the Serpentine and the Long water lakes, and was created by King Henry VIII in 1536 as hunting ground. It opened to the public in 1637 and was extensively improved under Queen Caroline in the early Eighteenth century. The Great exhibition for which the Crystal Palace was erected, designed by Joseph Paxton, was also held here.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Two metres at 12:012pm on Friday 2nd June 2023 at Patricia Bay , a body of salt water that extends East from the Saanich Inlet and forms part of the North Saanich shoreline in the District of North Saanich in British Columbia. It features a beautiful park which is at the south end of the Scoter Trail. Formerly known as Union Bay, the bay was named after Princess Patricia of Connaught, daughter of the Duke of Connaught who was Governor General in 1912.
The park has ties to transportation and the waterfront, and their pivotal role in the development of North Saanich. It is also tied to the development of the Victoria International Airport and military aviation efforts during the Second World War. In 1937, the airport was developed as one of six Royal Canadian Air Force Station training facilities on Vancouver Island.
The land was originally settled by the Tseycum First Nation (Union Bay Indian Reserve No.4) , one of four Saanich villages of Southern Vancouver Island in the area and part of the Northern Straits Coast Salish language group.
In the Sencoten langauge Tseycum is spelled Wsikem and means Land of Clay. The languages spoken include Lkwungen, Malchosen, Semiahmoo, SENĆOŦEN andT’Sou-ke and in 2023 the Chief is Tanya Jimmy, who was elected in July 2019. The Tseycum people have five reserves located at:
Bare Island 9, Goldstream 13, Pender Island 8, Saturna Island 7 and Union Bay 4.

This is a bit of a compilation of some of my "test Time Lapses". I must apologize ahead of time for the poor editing, occasionaly shakiness, or crazy effects due to the wrong codec being used.
***For those of you who will ask, I used a homemand (modified) time lapse remote. I am hoping to put together a tutorial on how to make on for yourself.***
time lapse of brighton beach at low tide. this is only a little test i really think for them to look real good you need some cloud in the sky witch on this rair occasion there was none! the bits of dust you see are actually birds. check my other time-lapse paces out here
the people you can see walking around is me, rockcake, Anna Carlson and other people passing though
this is how its done:
one photo every 3 seconds and then played back at 25 frames second. there where 1100 photos taken for this over the space of 55 min
the camera was on a tripod, my manfrotto 055XPROB to be more precise its a sturdy bit of kit and it need to be after all the 5D pretty much held its value (until the Mrk 2 came out)
set the image quality to small so it did not fill up the memory card to fast. also the low quality on the 5D is good enough to make 2k HD movies from
I used something similar to Canon's TC80N3 Remote Control to take photo at precis increments. TC80N3 Remote Control plugs into where a cable release would go but you can set it to take a certian number of photos and at specific intervals you can also use it with bulb mode to set the exposure time in hours minutes and seconds. i have a cheep rip off version made by a company called Micnova they are but they are both essentially souped up stop watch with a cable to coming of it
i used adobe light room to batch process the files to remove sensor dust (i cleaned my sensor today don't have to clean anything on an analog camrea!) and then quick time pro to import all the files and make it in to a movie. if you have quicktime pro all you do is go to FILE > OPEN IMAGE SEQUENCE, select the 1st image in you sequence and then set frame rate then once imported you export at any pixel dimensions and use what ever codec you want. for upload to flickr i encoded it with H.246. quick time pro is only $30

Photograph taken at an altitude of Two metres at 20:42pm on Thursday 25th May 2023 around sunset at Patricia Bay , a body of salt water that extends East from the Saanich Inlet and forms part of the North Saanich shoreline in the District of North Saanich in British Columbia.

THE EASTERN GRAY/EASTERN GREY SQUIRREL (SCIURUS CAROLINENSIS)
By Paul Williams
The Grey (or Gray) squirrel, you either love 'em or you hate 'em. Cute and fluffy little funsters or destructive critters who ruin trees, kill bird chicks and trees and damage our homes... oh and it's their fault we lost our native Red squirrels as well!
OK
I get it and I see both sides of the story of course. For my part, I am a nature, wildlife and landscape photographer who prefers the company of animals and natural beauty to fellow humans who are systematically plundering Mother Earth's resources and killing off her beautiful creatures at an alarming rate! I believe there is a natural order of things, creatures kill other creatures to survive, they adapt to situations and when mankind encroaches on their territory to make a fast buck, those animals sometimes adapt to survive and the order changes. That is the balance of nature which is ever changing and affected by us..... the dumbest of the great apes. Some species are driven out by others, some may be destined to become extinct, the fittest will survive, and sometime a species will need intervention and help from mankind in order to survive... usually as a direct consequence of mankind's own actions in destroying the animal kingdom's natural habitat of course.
I adore these little fellas and at almost sixty years old, I never grew up knowing red squirrels at all. I've seen reds in Scotland and black squirrels in Stanley Park on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, but in my beloved home country of England I have always known and loved the cute little Greys. They visit my garden and give me hours, days, weeks of happiness and wonderful photographic opportunities, and I see them in Parks and forests all around me, so it's time to offer up an insight into the Grey squirrel, much loved, much hated... a sort of Marmite rodent if you will.
WHAT EXACTLY IS A SQUIRREL?
The word 'Squirrel', was first recorded in 1327 and hails from the Anglo-Norman word 'Esquirel', from old French 'Escurel', which was a reflex for the Latin word 'Sciurus'.The Eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) is also known as the Eastern Grey squirrel or simply grey squirrel depending on the region of the world it is found. It is a tree squirrel, of the squirrel family Sciuridae including over one hundred arboreal species native to all continents of the world other than Antarctica and Oceania. Tree squirrels live mostly in trees, apart from the flying squirrel. The best known genus is Sciurus, containing most of the bushy tailed squirrels which are found in Europe, North America, temperate Asia as well as central and south America.
The scientific classification for the Eastern Grey is:
KINGDOM: ANIMALIA PHYLUM: CHORDATA CLASS: MAMMALIA ORDER: RODENTIA FAMILY: SCIURIDAE GENUS: SCIURUS SUBGENUS: SCIURUS SPECIES: SCIURUS CAROLINENSIS
They were first noted by German naturalist, botanist, entomologist, herpetologist, and malacologist - Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1788.
A mammal and rodent, predominantly herbivorous they are none the less an omnivore with a life span of between two and ten years. They can grow to 70cm in length and weigh up to 8kg. There are more than two hundred and sixty species of worldwide squirrel, the smallest being the African pygmy squirrel at just 10cm in length, whereas the Indian giant squirrel is three feet long! The oldest fossil of a squirrel, Hesperopetes, dates back to the late Eocene epoch period Chadronian period of 40-35 million years ago. The tree squirrels rotate their ankles by 180 degrees, so that the hind paws pointy backwards gripping tree bark which enables them to descend a tree headfirst.
Originally native to Eastern and Midwestern United States of America, they were first introduced into the United Kingdom in 1876 in Henbury Park, Macclesfield in Cheshire when Victorian banker Thomas V. Brocklehurst released a pair of Greys that he brought back from a business trip to America after their attraction as pets had waned. Victorians had a penchant for collecting exotic animals and birds of the world, but trends came and went and subsequently animals were simply discarded into the wilderness. There are early records of greys released near Denbighshire in north Wales from private collections. Later introduced to several regions in the UK, they quickly settled and spread, colonizing an area of three hundred miles in a quarter of a century between Argyll and Stirlingshire in Scotland.
Introductions of the Greys between 1902 and 1929 (the year of the last recorded introduction), included: Regent’s Park in London, Berkshire, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Oxfordshire, Devon, Warwickshire, Nottinghamshire, Suffolk and Hampshire. Grey Squirrels spread into Gloucestershire and eastern Wiltshire with animals coming directly from the United States or from Woburn. One hundred greys were released in Richmond Park in Surrey in 1902, Ninety one into Regent’s Park between 1905 and 1907 and a further ten New Jersey imported greys were introduced into Woburn Park in Bedfordshire.
Predators include hawks, weasels, raccoons, bobcats, foxes, domestic and feral cats, snakes, owls, and dogs, African harrier-hawks in Africa and... oh yes, Mankind pretty much everywhere who despise, mistreat, cull or eat it .
FACTS, MYTHS AND THAT POXY PARAPOX!
The massive decline in native red squirrels blamed upon the spread of the invasive greys has always been perhaps a little harsh as reds were already in a steep decline due to loss of habitat and disease and thus the greys simply took over the areas where the reds were dwindling. It's also a fact that reds were also seen as a plague, branded as pests who killed birds and damaged trees and the culling of reds almost brought them to the brink of extinction. Licenses to kill reds could still be obtained up until the seventies!
Reds suffered at the hands of mankind thanks to a combination of agricultural deforestation also linked with war and fuel needs which caused extinction in Southern Scotland and Ireland by the early eighteenth century, way before greys had been introduced. Harsh winters killed off the less hardy red population in the early nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Greys are more adept at finding food and adapting to locations and environments, but also carry the squirrel poxvirus (SQPV) which although not particularly harmful to them, is a serious infection for the reds.
Parapox in red squirrels causes swollen lesions around the mouth, eyes, ears and nose also the front paws and sometimes genitals and skin ulcers and kills a red within fifteen days. There is no definitive correlation between the spread of the virus and the spread of the Greys, it actually arrived in several areas before the greys began to colonize there. An epidemic virus was observed in Red squirrels from at least 1900 with isolation attempts failing, and the first case of Parapox in the UK was in 1980 in the county of Norfolk. Greys cannot transmit the virus to reds via saliva or faeces, but reds can between each other from bodily secretions and at animal feeders in gardens. The transmission from greys to reds is though to come from parasites. Eight to ten per cent of reds survive the virus, and there is some evidence that reds are slowly building an evolved resistance.
Greys are seen as pests to forest land, stripping bark from trees during May and June, and are also capable of destroying household bins, water pipes, causing roof damage not to mention taking eggs and killing young chicks of ground nesting and songbird populations. They also take from bird feeders and there is a whole industry for creating squirrel proof feeders these days.
THE CULLING OF GREY SQUIRRELS
Grey squirrels have limited legal protection and can be legally controlled all year round by a variety of methods including shooting and trapping. Methods of trapping and killing include Drey poking and shooting, Tunnel trapping using spring traps set in accordance with BASC’s trapping pest mammals code of practice. They can also be shot using a shotgun or powerful air rifle or up until September 30th 2014 poisoned by Warfarin (Now outlawed).
Whilst professional trapping and extermination is hopefully done as humanely as possible, there have been cases, many of them where cost savings have been gained by battering the squirrels to death! Grey squirrels are trapped in ghastly metal contraptions for hours and hours, wearing themselves out frantically trying to escape by gnawing at the metals bars. They bite the floor and scratch at them with their claws and do not get a moments peace or rest through absolute fear. Once the traps are retrieved, each squirrel, terrified will be thrown into a sack and smacked on the head countless times with a blunt instrument. When a mother is slaughtered, her babies who are totally dependent on her, will die a slow death of thirst and starvation.
There is an argument for the control of Greys on many grounds but also a counter argument that Culling does not work, and has not on countless times where, once a population of greys have been culled, the nearest group will move back in and claim the land. The university of Bristol concluded that there was little evidence that culling greys to save red squirrels was effective, and that perhaps finding a way of boosting red squirrel immunity to the poxvirus or planting areas of yew trees where reds are known to thrive and spending money on research into positive moves might be a better option.
In Ireland, the re-introduction of the Pine marten, a species made extinct originally by the very same land owners who also wish to do the same to the grey squirrel, has seen the rapid demise of the grey and the reintroction of the native reds. Red squirrels are smaller and more nimble than their grey counterparts, and as such can get to the very ends of tree branches where neither the pine martins, nor more importantly the heavier greys can, thus surviving and thriving. As a result in Ireland, the grey squirrel population has crashed in approximately 9,000 km2 of its former range and the reds has become common once more after a thirty year absence... oh and Pine Martens are protected again!
In Scotland, Pine Martens exist in areas where Red squirrels thrive, and greys do not. So perhaps there is a lesson here, as in England where there are no pine martens, the greys are prolific breeders. So there is an argument against the barbarity of shooting and poisoning greys, and if, as so many believe, the greys MUST be controlled, how about a more humane and natural method that nature intended.. with re-introduction of predators. Just a thought!
So a few facts and figures on the greys and to wrap up, from a purely personal perspective I love these little guys, as I do almost every creature in nature other than those eight legged beasties that shall not be named and for which I have a deep and powerful phobia that borders on paranoia!
I could no more harm an animal deliberately than eat a McDonald's McRib (Once saw how they are made and let me just say... eeeuuuuuwwwww!!). They are small, cute, cuddly, furry, they photograph beautifully, have great personality and make me smile. They trust me enough to take food from my hand in parks, and I can't bare the though of ugly, hairy land owners sticking a shotgun in their face and blowing them away! I appreciate they can be a pest, a problem, a menace, that their PR managers might have a bit of a problem winning you over when they flay small chicks alive on your lawn or decimate the songbird population by stealing their eggs.... and perhaps there is a need to keep the population under control and try and re-establish the red population.....
Yep I get that....
I just hope we can solve the problem more humanely to create a peaceful coexistence of the reds and greys in different areas. A man can dream can't he.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Seventy eight metres at 13:06pm on Thursday 25th May 2023 off Keating cross and Benvenuto Avenue at the Butterfly gardens in Victoria, located in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia.
This is Mango, who is forty five years old now, a beautiful bird that I have visited for over 27 years on my trips here (Since it was located at the Crystal Gardens in Victoria back in the day). The American flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) is the only flamingo which naturally inhabits North America, and is also known as the Caribbean flamingo. They can reach up to 83 years old in captivity!

Photograph taken at an altitude of Forty two metres at 14:06pm on Friday 26th May 2023 off Richards Trail and Herd Road at the Pacific Northwest Raptors in North Cowichan on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.
Here we see a Saker falcon (Falco cherrug)shielding prey captured during a flying demonstration, from predatory Red tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis), in the sky above. A large species of falcon which breeds from central Europe eastwards across the Palearctic to Manchuria. It is mainly migratory except in the southernmost parts of its range, wintering in Ethiopia, the Arabian peninsula, northern Pakistan and western China.
The saker falcon is the second fastest bird in level flight, capable of reaching 150 km/h (93 mph). It is also the 3rd fastest animal in the world overall, capable of executing high speed dives known as “swooping”, in excess of 320 km/h (200 mph).

Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus), derives it's name from the Greek for 'Sea eagle', and the 'bald' denotation actually derives from an older meaning of 'white headed'.Bald Eagles can be up to forty inches in length with a wingspan up to seven and a half feet and can weigh up to 6.3kgs. The females are generally 25% larger than the males.

#10/365 This image represents my kids Chistmas. My daughter was all about the Barbie Peekaboo petites and my son it was all Thomas the train. I'm sure it will be funny to see this photo next year when all of these toys are untouched in the bottom of some toybox.
So I have been tagged for the first time, so lets get this over with...
1. I am half vietnamese / irish
2. I used to want to be an actor..only got as far being an extra in a couple movies
3. I thought I was going to be a rockstar..had a demo and everything and never got around to sending it to anyone. Did play in band a couple of times but it was too much work.
4. I majored in History but I am a Graphic Designer
5. Dang..only on #5....I lived in Germany for 10 years when I was a kid (Father was in the Army)
6. I'd love to live in London one day
7. I watch more television shows than most anyone you know
8. I am really good at trivial pursuit...I used to collect all the editions. No one ever wants to play :(
9. I know it is trendy and cool to be a geek..but I really am. I love electronic gadgets, I have every game console, I got to level to 70-80 in World of Warcraft in a little over a week when the new expansion came out, I can go on.
10. I have a massive music collection. I'd say over 4000 cd easy..that does not include my mp3 collection. I listen to almost every kind of music.
11. I met my wife in a dance club.
12. Will this ever end!...I love food..I mean all kinds, even fast food.
13. I used to have long hair..down to my butt. People used to think I Amerian Indian...I even had an Indian ask me what tribe I was from...I said the tribe of rock and roll! (not really)
14. It's late and that last statement made me laugh out loud
15. I'm still laughing
16. I'm up every night till 2am watching shows on my Cowon A3 high res media player that supports almost every codec out there...did I mention I'm a geek

I've uploaded this video in maximum HD quality, so please make sure to see it fullscreen with headphones on. The music is essential here.
Well, this is the second reason I've been so busy lately: my first video. It's an experiment in macro photography using oil and water, inspired by this amazing video by Jesse Zanzinger. I don't have a macro lens so I used a macro extension ring on my 50mm f1.4 lens on a Nikon D7000 body to shoot all the video. It's shot through a glass of water resting on an iphone, which is playing some videos in the background.
This beautiful song is called Lullaby and it's written and performed by my brother Luca Benedetti. He's a professional musician living in New York and just celebrated his CD release last week at 55 Bar in Manhattan. He has lot's of interesting projects going on including The Dang-It Bobbies, so check him out.
I hope you enjoy it, it took almost 2 weeks to edit and mount it and it almost killed my computer's processer, but it was worth it.

The Canon EOS R5 is Canon's most advanced, complete camera in a long, long time. It has a few flaws (most notably a tendency to overheat when shooting the most demanding video codecs), but it has a very long list of virtues, including high resolution (45Mpx), great high ISO performance and dynamic range, fast burst rates (12 FPS mechanical and 20 FPS Electronic), deep buffers, great IBIS (sensor stabilization), and a truly awesome focus system. Add an amazing amount of video options and great ergonomics, and this is a camera that I simply love using. Bottom line: I bought one. Here's my review coverage:

Photograph taken at an altitude of Two metres at 12.19pm on Monday 29th May 2014 off 2903 Ocean Boulevard, Victoria, on the Esquimalt Lagoon Migratory Bird Sanctuary, on the Juan De Fuca Strait, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
The Lagoon is one of seven Migratory Bird Sanctuaries in British Columbia, and an important stopover for birds journeying between North and South America. Visitors include geese and Swans, Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons, plus many other species of birds.
The Great Blue Heron (Ardea Herodias) is a wading bird in the Heron family Ardeidae and found in North America, Central Ameria, the Caribean and Galapagos Islands. One of the largest of Herons, it has a head to tail length of 01-137 centimtres (36-54 inches) and a wingspan of 187-201 centimtres (66-79 inches). They are found where my family live, and naturally very wary of mankind, flying off as soon as you are within fifty to one hundred yards of them.

Some facts:
The largest steam locomotive in the world.
Twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad, the first of which was delivered in 1941. The locomotives were 132 feet long and weighed 1.2 million pounds. Because of their great length, the frames of the Big Boys were "hinged," or articulated, to allow them to negotiate curves. They had a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement, which meant they had four wheels on the leading set of "pilot" wheels which guided the engine, eight drivers, another set of eight drivers, and four wheels following which supported the rear of the locomotive. The massive engines normally operated between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyo.
There are seven Big Boys on public display in various cities around the country. They can be found in St. Louis, Missouri; Dallas, Texas; Omaha, Nebraska; Denver, Colorado; Scranton, Pennsylvania; Green Bay, Wisconsin; and Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Big Boy No. 4014 was delivered to Union Pacific in December 1941. The locomotive was retired in December 1961, having traveled 1,031,205 miles in its 20 years in service. Union Pacific reacquired No. 4014 from the RailGiants Museum in Pomona, California, in 2013, and relocated it back to Cheyenne to begin a multi-year restoration process.

My wife took an excellent video of this monster locomotive but unfortunately, I set the camera to record as AVCHD @60 fpm and now discover flickr does not support video files with this codec. Perhaps at a later date I will buy converter software………when I can find out (from flickr) exactly what format of videos they do support……..
Somewhat disappointedly, this massive locomotive came though at a much higher speed than anticipated - I would guess, 35-40 mph. Let me just say, you cannot believe the horrendous sound this monster produces. It is unbelievable! Of course we were standing only about 30 feet away as it came roaring past.
Hope you enjoy……….. (I might be taking more pictures of this once-in-a-lifetime locomotive……….but I am not going to say from exactly what location. There were already large enough crowds gathered all over the Chicago suburbs waiting to see this vintage icon. ;)

The Common sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant with a daisy-like flower face. Its scientific name comes from the Greek words helios (“sun”) and anthos (“flower”). The flowers come in many colors (yellow, red, orange, maroon, brown), but they are commonly bright yellow with brown centers that ripen into heavy heads filled with seeds. Sunflowers make excellent cut flowers, and many attract bees, birds, and butterflies.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Two metres at 20:42pm on Thursday 25th May 2023 around sunset at Patricia Bay, a body of salt water that extends East from the Saanich Inlet and forms part of the North Saanich shoreline in the District of North Saanich in British Columbia.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Six metres, at 13:51pm on Monday 9th January 2023, off the Mall and Horse Guards Road within the grounds of St James's Park in Central London, one of the Royal parks of London situated in South West London.
Pelicans have existed at St James's Park for over four hundred years, originally a gift from the Russian Ambassador to King Charles II in 1664, (and subsequently referred to as 'Ambassadors Pelicans), nowadays six individuals including Louis, Vaclav and Gargi who are all Great White Pelicans (Pelecanus Onocrotalus), also known as Eastern Pelicans, White Pelicans or Rosy Pelicans, reside on Pelican Rock at one end of the lake.
They eat fish from the lake and are also hand fed, and are a much loved attraction. They have the largest wingspan after the Great Albatross of up to three metres, have a body length up to six feet and males can weigh up to 15kgs.

Part of a series of twenty-two warehouses built in 1895 alongside the Kattendijk dock in the old port of Antwerp in an area called 't Eilandje ("Little Island").
The whole area around the old docks is, for now, quiet and deserted, and there's still a palpable sense of nostalgia in the air, but several historic sites on this precious piece of real-estate have in fact been sold to project developers

Photograph taken at an altitude of Zero metres, at 12:58pm on Monday 9th January 2023, in the grounds of St James's Park in Central London.
Here we see an Egyptian goose (Alopochen Aegyptiaca) taking advantage of a little aerial supremacy whilst perched high on a tree stump on the lake in St James's Park. These were once considered sacred by the ancient Egyptians, appearing in much of their artwork. They are native to Africa South of the Sahara.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Zero metres, at 13:24pm on Monday 9th January 2023, off Hyde Park Corner and Park Lane A4202 in the grounds of Hyde park, a Grade 1 listed Royal Park (the largest of) of London.

Here we see an adult Red-breasted goose (Branta ruficollis) from Eurasia, and sadly currently classified as vulnerable. This goose is an example of hybrid specification, being the result of ancient interbreeding between the Brant goose and the white cheeked goose, some 3.5 million years ago.

The Northern tent caterpillar (Malacosoma californicum pluviale) is a native North American insect. It occurs throughout the southern half of British Columbia, extending as far east as Quebec. In the United States, it is found west of the Cascade Mountains, through Washington and South to Oregon, plus northern Idaho, western Montana and several northeastern states also. It turns eventually into a moth of stout bodied with a wingspan of 25-37 mm and a one year lifespan.

Yesterday afternoon around 4 pm, the sky held a mixture of interesting clouds on a blue background. I decided to try a timelapse and set up the D800e on the deck and pointed the 16-35 lens northward. I set the built-in intervalometer for 900 exposures at five second intervals. The camera settings were manual at f/8 and 1/500. I have more timelapse gear than any normal person would, but I wanted to try just this simple setup. Let it run until dark without changing any settings.
The battery gave out around 5:15, after 870 exposures.
Using LRTimelapse 5, I downloaded the images from the card to the Mac Pro and started the procedure using LRTimelapse’s Visual Workflow tab. (It took me a long time to become comfortable using LRTimelapse, but now it seems simple. It is, IMO, the best tool for the job.) I noticed right away that the light was good for the early frames but ramped sharply downward as the sun set due to my not changing exposure as the light faded. I set some keyframes around this point on the timeline for adjusting exposure in Lightroom. Then I exported the files to Lightroom and made some adjustments. The D800e has a lot of dynamic range, and I was able to counter the downward ramp partially with an upward ramp of about four stops. I also made some other keyframe adjustments, mostly in saturation and de-haze.
The next step was to reload the keyframe metadata into LRTimelapse and let it tnterpolate the metadata for intervening frames. Then I used the visual deflicker button to even out small frame to frame changes in illumination due to small frame to frame variations in the iris diaphragm setting. (The gospel on this is to shoot with the lens wide open to eliminate these variations. But I had used f/8 [as an experiment]).
The next step was to export the new image data back to Lightroom and create the TIFF files for rendering.
I rendered the video in 1080p, 4k UHD, and 8k UHD versions. I don’t have an 8k monitor, so I can’t actually view the 8k version. Maybe i’ll put it on youtube someday for those with 8k monitors. I used the AppleProRes codec, which makes huge files but is easier on the CPU for playing and editing. I am posting the 1080p version here.
To me, it came out OK. It does get grainy at the end, where I was boosting pixels by four stops. But I can fade that somewhat in post. I think I have about 15 seconds of good video here, starting at about five seconds in.
The next thing to do is to import this into Premiere Pro for editing. I think I want to do a moderate zoom in to the big cloud that comes through at around the 10 second point. And maybe change the color a bit.
I have thought for a long time that I want to do video. Maybe it’s time to put together a timelapse (pun?) sequence. I have several good snippets of clouds and stars. Over coming months, I need to get better with Premiere Pro and After Effects.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Three metres, at 13:02pm on Monday 9th January 2023, off Hyde Park Corner and Park Lane A4202 in the grounds of Hyde park, a Grade 1 listed Royal Park (the largest of) of London.
Here we see an adult Eurasian coot (Fulica atra), also known as the Common coot or Australian coot, a member of the Rail and crake family, Rallidae.

Shot 555 frames and converted the photos into video in-camera. The camera records the video at 10fps, I changed the frame rate from 10 to 29 and the codec to Xvid MPEG-4 using VirtualDub.
Unfortunately there were no boats or yachts on the lake when I captured it.
Testing low light, hand held shot at dusk on Church St on muggy summer evening.
The Sony RX100 M3 in low light performs pretty good. The BSI CMOS sensor is the same as the one used in the MK II. Slightly better than the MK I, which I still have and like.
Highlights of the new Sony RX100 M3:
- 24-70 F1.8-2.8
- Pop-up electronic viewfinder
- Built-in 3 stop ND filter
- 180 degree flip out LCD display
- XAVC S codec with 50mbps with clean HDMI video output with full sensor readout for best video I've seen coming out of this form factor. Rivals many DSLR camera footage as well.
Sure I wish the lens went out to at least 100mm, but then it would be much bulkier and un-pocketable, which has become more appealing to me as of late.
The images are on par with the Canon G1X MK II. The extra size bump in that sensor does not seem to benefit as much over the smaller RX100's Backside illuminated CMOS used in the RX100 MK II and the new MK III. Although I do like the touch screen and the 120mm reach from the G1X MK II. (I sold off my Canon G1X MK II and got the Sony RX100 M3.)

Photograph taken at 14:09pm on Monday 3rd March 2025 at an altitude of Sixty metres in the Grounds of Warnham Nature Reserve in Horsham, West Sussex. The Millpond dates back to the 16th Century and parts of the woodland dates back even further to the 13th Century. A beautiful location for a walk, or to sit amongst nature and so see birds and butterflies in their natural habitat.
The Eurasian chaffinch, common chaffinch, or simply the chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs), is a common and widespread small passerine bird in the finch family. The male is brightly coloured with a blue-grey cap and rust-red underparts.
