Photograph taken at 11:34am on Monday 3rd March 2025 at an altitude of Forty seven metres in the Grounds of Warnham Nature Reserve in Horsham, West Sussex. The Millpond dates back to the 16th Century and parts of the woodland dates back even further to the 13th Century. A beautiful location for a walk, or to sit amongst nature and so see birds and butterflies in their natural habitat.

Here we see a Eurasian nuthatch or wood nuthatch (Sitta europaea), a small passerine bird found throughout the Palearctic and in Europe. First described in 1758, this is part of a family of similar looking Nuthatch species and is a small bird with short tail and wings and long pointed bill.

In fact this is almost usual station locomotive. There was the international division of a labor in Communist block. And Czech built ChKD Praha of 3o-3o

(or Co-Co) layout Diesel locomotive has been chosen as standard station/shunting locomotive for Soviet Railroads and for other Communist countries. In Soviet Union it was named ChME-3 (Czech-built, station, with electric transmission). It has recommended itself from the best side and circa 7500 pieces have been built. It was best Czechs' business for all their history. And now ChME-3 are carrying almost all station works in all post-Soviet countries, also being frequentely used in suburban traffic.

But this piece is unique simulteniously being 'named' locomotive. Named locomotives are not rare all over the world. But in this special case term 'named' means that this is a kind of award or moral stimulation. This practice is still kept since 1920 when for some locomotives names of war and revolution heroes have been given. Such 'named' locomotives were credited for best crews for combat heroism and labour achievements - as a sort of award, apart of honor badges, medals, etc. It was considered as a great honor for locomotives. But nobless obligee! And locomotive staff (or 'brigade' as it is called here) had to keep such locomotive in excellent technical state. And also to fulfil combat or labour feats equal to those of a hero to give his name.

Locomotive brigades were usually 'attached' to the one and the same locomotive for years and decades. It became a real second house for a staff. Therefore locomotives were beloved and pampered by crew. Locomotive shining by fresh painting and polished brass details was the subject of pride of a staff - it belongs to railroaders 'Codecs of honor'. At the steam age such cases were often when locomotive staff was unsatisfied by standard paint given by a railroad. And a crew bought some 'special' paint from it's personal funds.

We may see from these shots that nothing changed at this branch despite the change of political system. And 'named' locomotives tradition is kept almost a century.

And this locomotive is named in honor of N.E. Kalinichenko, the full Knight of Soldier fame order, receiving during the WWII the stars of all three degreess. Apropos the Soldier fame is rare award being given only for privates or sergeants and only for combat feats carried in specially hard and dangerous conditions. From 15 millions men and women who served in Red Army during WWII only 2656 became full Knights of this order - including four women.

This award system repeates exectly the Soldier's St Georgian Cross - the highest and most valuable soldier's award of Russian Empire. Both orders - Empire and Soviet were carried on the same insignia band with orange-n-black strips. So called Georgian or Guardian colors. It's well depicted on shields on both sides of locomotive.

Photograph taken at an altitude of One hundred and twelve metres at 12:28pm on Thursday 25th May 2023 off Keating cross and Benvenuto Avenue at the Butterfly gardens in Victoria, located in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia.

This is Mango, who is forty five years old now, a beautiful bird that I have visited for over 27 years on my trips here (Since it was located at the Crystal Gardens in Victoria back in the day). The American flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) is the only flamingo which naturally inhabits North America, and is also known as the Caribbean flamingo. They can reach up to 83 years old in captivity!

Photograph taken at an altitude of Sixty eight metres at 13:41pm on Thursday 25th May off Keating Cros Road and Benvenuto Avenue at Victoria Butterfly Gardens in Brentwood Bay on Vancouver Island in Brirish Columbia, Canada.

This is a Blue Morpho (Morpho Peleides) butterfly, one of the largest butterflies in the world with a wingspan up to eight inches. Light reflects from the microscopic scales on their wingbacks, giving a vivid iridescent appearance, and they are mainly seen active and in flight, resting only briefly. They are found in the tropical rainforests of Latin America from Mexico to Columbia.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Two metres at 21:25pm on Thursday 25th May 2023 around sunset at Patricia Bay , a body of salt water that extends East from the Saanich Inlet and forms part of the North Saanich shoreline in the District of North Saanich in British Columbia. It features a beautiful park which is at the south end of the Scoter Trail. Formerly known as Union Bay, the bay was named after Princess Patricia of Connaught, daughter of the Duke of Connaught who was Governor General in 1912.

The park has ties to transportation and the waterfront, and their pivotal role in the development of North Saanich. It is also tied to the development of the Victoria International Airport and military aviation efforts during the Second World War. In 1937, the airport was developed as one of six Royal Canadian Air Force Station training facilities on Vancouver Island.

The land was originally settled by the Tseycum First Nation (Union Bay Indian Reserve No.4) , one of four Saanich villages of Southern Vancouver Island in the area and part of the Northern Straits Coast Salish language group.

In the Sencoten langauge Tseycum is spelled Wsikem and means Land of Clay. The languages spoken include Lkwungen, Malchosen, Semiahmoo, SENĆOŦEN andT’Sou-ke and in 2023 the Chief is Tanya Jimmy, who was elected in July 2019. The Tseycum people have five reserves located at:

Bare Island 9, Goldstream 13, Pender Island 8, Saturna Island 7 and Union Bay 4.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Five metres at 07:52am on Wednesday 17th May 2023 off Lone Cone Road from the front garden of a seventy year old house I was renting in Campbell Street, Tofino in British Columbia in Canada.

Eastern Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are native to the southern BC mainland, one of many different sub species of Raccoon, but are an introduced invasive species on Haida Gwaii. They were introduced in the 1940s to enhance the local fur trade, but they represent a significant threat to ground-nesting marine birds. My family refer to them as 'Trash Panda's', but I love them. They are also known as Racoons, Coons or Common Racoons

Photograph taken at an altitude of Six metres around sunset at 21:19pm on Sunday 14th May 2023 off Main Street and First Street, from the boat jetty and pier area in Tofino in British Columbia in Canada.

Here we look past the island of Clayoquot towards Vargas Island.

I was renting a fabulous seventy year old private house in Campbell Street, Tofino, and went for a drive and stroll that evening as the sun fell in the sky.

As promised, the "long photo" version of the previous photos.

This is 328 frames with a 5-minute interval between shots, taken over a period of about 27 hours.

There's a flash of light about halfway through: My room faces east, and I'm in a canyon. I get about 30 minutes of direct sunlight in the morning after the sun clears the canyon on the east side and before it goes above the eaves (forgot to close the shades before I left for work). It was otherwise lit with 2 color-correct studio lights with umbrellas.

I've been having a devil of a time figuring out which video codecs work with flickr (this is the fifth time I've tried to upload this). I think I've got it sorted now.

A shame I can't post the full-resolution version of this (it's really stunning), but it's about twice the size that flickr allows.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Six metres (Sea level) at 19:40pm on Wednesday 17th May 2023 looking towards an eagles nest on unnamed and uninhabited by mankind wilderness, some distance from Dawley Passage Provincial Park and Meares Island in the Alberni-Clayoquot region of British Columbia in Canada.

The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus), derives it's name from the Greek for 'Sea eagle', and the 'bald' denotation actually derives from an older meaning of 'white headed'.

Bald Eagles can be up to forty inches in length with a wingspan up to seven and a half feet and can wigh up to 6.3kgs. The females are generally 25% larger than the males.

I was stationed in a seventy year old house I was renting in Campbell Street, Tofino in British Columbia in Canada and booked a place on a twenty three feet long Zodiac inflatable in full life saving gear with Remote Passages Marine Excursions at 51 Wharf Street in Tofino.

Here we see a pair of Mallard Ducklings which are often hatched between March and July. Mallards are dabbling ducks which breed all over temperate and sub tropical Americas, Eurasia and North Africa as well as New Zealand and a host of other territories. Belonging to the waterfowl family, the males or drakes are particularly beautiful with glossy green heads and bright yellow beaks.

Photograph taken at an altitude of One metres at 21:12pm on Thursday 25th May 2023 around sunset at Patricia Bay , a body of salt water that extends East from the Saanich Inlet and forms part of the North Saanich shoreline in the District of North Saanich in British Columbia.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Two metres at 07:50am on Wednesday 17th May 2023 off Lone Cone Road from the front garden of a seventy year old house I was renting in Campbell Street, Tofino in British Columbia in Canada.

Photograph taken at an altitude of One metres at 08:43am on Monday 8th May 2023 off Vancouver Street and Cleveland Avenue, standing in front of Howe Sound Inn & Brewing where I was staying for one night in Squamish, British Columbia in Canada.

Here we look across to part of Siy̓ám̓ Smánit as the Squamish First nations originally referred to it. Legend says it is a longhouse transformed to stone by Xáays, as the Transformer Brothers are known in this language. The great cleft in the mountain's cliff-face in Squamish legend is a mark of corrosion left by the skin of Sínulhka, a giant two-headed sea serpent. In Western culture we know it as Stawamus Chief Mountain, also known as Stawamus Chief, The Chief or Squamish Chief. The Canon EOS R5 is Canon's most advanced, complete camera in a long, long time. It has a few flaws (most notably a tendency to overheat when shooting the most demanding video codecs), but it has a very long list of virtues, including high resolution (45Mpx), great high ISO performance and dynamic range, fast burst rates (12 FPS mechanical and 20 FPS Electronic), deep buffers, great IBIS (sensor stabilization), and a truly awesome focus system. Add an amazing amount of video options and great ergonomics, and this is a camera that I simply love using. Bottom line: I bought one. Here's my review coverage:
