Leonard Knight has constructed his biblical opus in the southeastern corner of California (near Niland)....it is a very strange place...Leonard is a strange man...but perhaps the excess of religious fervor makes for some interesting images. He constructs the "structure" of some of his spaces with hay bales and old tires...windows in the structure are provided by old car windshields....Leonard has spent over 15 years in the searing heat of the desert...not sure how the ecosystem of Salvation Mountain does with all the toxic paint on the earth.....
To read about Leonard, Salvation Mountain and Slab City go here:
This particular Point Of View (POV) image puts the viewer into the perspective of the photographer shooting from the top of the Albuquerque J Robert dam to popular hotels in Old Town Albuquerque 9.2 miles away on a Nikon P1000. Many Breaking Bad fans will recognize the dam from past episodes of the tremendously popular video series. Hotel Albuquerque hosted many Breaking Bad parties and media events in the show’s heyday.
For the past 2 days I have been testing my new Nikon P1000 camera out in my yard and neighborhood. I am very impressed. You have to haul a 3.5 lb camera and a hefty tripod. I used my Manfrotto 3130 tripod with a fluid head that weighs 8 lbs for telephoto shots. The fluid head facilitates video pans, but even it drifted down while shooting at far out lengths such as 3000 mm indicating a need for counter weights such as sand bags or a heavier duty tripod. You also have to use a remote control for shutter depressions and controlling the camera. I purchased a Nikon ML-L7 remote which did the job very well.
The Coolpix P1000 does not use .nef for raw files. It uses .nrw format. I could not use Adobe PS CS6 to read these files. I started saving files in both raw and jpg formats instead of raw exclusively as I do on my Nikon DLSR camera. I had to download Nikon Capture NX-D which came with Nikon Picture Control and Nikon Transfer 2 which I have not tested yet. I Downloaded and installed a Nikon NRW codec. I could not see NRW files in Photoshop CS6, Adobe Bridge CS6 or View NX V2. But I could see them in Capture NX-D, Windows photos, Win Explorer, Win movie Maker, Photo Gallery and Win Photo Viewer.
It pays to purchase a 77 mm clear filter cover because the possibility of scratching the huge lens looms very high.
The Jpg image size is stored in a 12:9 ratio. My other Nikon cameras are sized in a12:8 ratio. Also many functions are accessed by menu rather than buttons common on Nikon DLSR’s.
I have not tested the bird or moon modes on the P1000 yet, but they look promising on paper.
All in all I am very pleased with the Nikon P1000 and look forward to having a lot of fun with it, especially for birding.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Five metres at 12:55pm on Saturday 13th May 2023 off Eastview Drive and Bevan Avenue on the Bevan Avenue fishing pier in Sidney on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.
A pair of magnificent Baldies have taken to landing high up on this wooden perch, overlooking the pier and swooping down for fish and crabs when the opportunity arrives.
The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus), derives it's name from the Greek for 'Sea eagle', and the 'bald' denotation actually derives from an older meaning of 'white headed'.Bald Eagles can be up to forty inches in length with a wingspan up to seven and a half feet and can weigh up to 6.3kgs. The females are generally 25% larger than the males.

Photograph taken at an altitude of One metres at 07:47am on Wednesday 17th May 2023 off Lone Cone Road from the front garden of a seventy year old house I was renting in Campbell Street, Tofino in British Columbia in Canada.
Eastern Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are native to the southern BC mainland, one of many different sub species of Raccoon, but are an introduced invasive species on Haida Gwaii. They were introduced in the 1940s to enhance the local fur trade, but they represent a significant threat to ground-nesting marine birds. My family refer to them as 'Trash Panda's', but I love them. They are also known as Racoons, Coons or Common Racoons

Photograph taken at an altitude of Seventy one metres at 12:34pm on Thursday 25th May 2023 off Keating cross and Benvenuto Avenue at the Butterfly gardens in Victoria, located in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia.
This is a male Zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata), the most common estrildid finch of Central Australia (a family of small passerine birds of the old world tropics and Australasia). First collected in 1801 and described in 1817, the males are distinguishable by the much brighter and colourful markings to the face and wings.

Inside the Electron Analog Four 4 voice analog synthesizer.
There's a Xilinx Spartan FPGA at the bottom.

It's probably what's controlling the parameters for the analog voices, or it's the effects processor. Whatever it's doing, it has a number of lines connected to the analog voices.
Also a cirrus logic codec at the center left. I believe it's aCS42435 variant.
U1 - Coldfire MCF54415 - 250MHz 32bit microprocessor
U3 - NT5TU128M8HE - 1Gb DDR2 SDRAM (probably powered from the supercap via the switchmode PSU next to it to gain nonvolatile storage without the expensive (and small!) magnetic NVRAM used in their "Analog"-series devices.
U5 - S25FL128S - 128Mbit SPI flash memory (firmware boot)
U8 - presumably some sort of flash memory (+Drive)
U14 - AK4621 - 24-Bit 192kHz Stereo Audio CODEC

Photograph taken at an altitude of Seven metres at 11:31am on Wednesday 24th May 2023 off Homathko Drive at Island View Beach on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.
The Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), takes it's name from the Latin for 'Sea Raven', and the Phalacrocoracidae family consists of forty or more species of aquatic birds known as shags and cormorants. There are three species of Cormorant native to British Columbia, and seen here is a Double Crested Cormorant, the largest of the three variants.
Island View beach is a fifty one hectare regional park located on Island View Road and Homathko Road with a beautiful stretch of coastline along the Eastern shore of the Saanich Peninsula and panoramic views of Haro Strait, James Island and Mount Baker over in Whatcom County, Washington State, USA.
It is roughly twenty kilometres from downtown Victoria, seventeen kilometers from the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal and twelve kilometres from Victoria airport. The District of Central Saanich is situated on the traditional territory of the W̱SÁNEĆ people which includes W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip) and SȾÁUTW̱ (Tsawout) First Nations who all signed the Saanich Indian Territorial Declaration.
The W̱SÁNEĆ People are Salt Water People who traditionally had homes throughout the San Juan Islands, east and north coasts of the Saanich Peninsula, the Gulf Islands, northeast across Georgia Strait to Boundary Bay, the Saanich Inlet and forest lands, PKOLS (Mount Douglas), W̱QENNELEȽ (Mt. Finlayson) and SELE₭TEȽ (Goldstream and it's provincial park).

Photograph taken at 10:30am on Wednesday 16th July 2025 at an altitude of Forty four in the Grounds of Warnham Nature Reserve in Horsham, West Sussex. Here we see a female mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) resting at the water's edge.
Mallards are dabbling ducks which breed all over temperate and sub tropical Americas, Eurasia and North Africa as well as New zealand and a host of other territories. Belonging to the waterfowl family, the males or drakes are particularly beautiful with glossy green heads and bright yellow beaks.
The Millpond dates back to the 16th Century and parts of the woodland dates back even further to the 13th Century. A beautiful location for a walk, or to sit amongst nature and so see birds and butterflies in their natural habitat.

Hosted by TransLink and South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority, the Trans-Expo 2010 is an annual event aimed at bringing transit professionals together across Canada. This year the gathering is held at the Vancouver Convention Centre on November 16, 2010. Nearly 100 exhibitors set up booths at West Exhibit Hall C to showcase their products.
Quite a good number of newer and yet everyday technologies are also incorporated into the public transit system, many with sustainability features. Diesel-Electric hybrid engine, LED lighting, solar-powered devices, GPS, Wi-Fi, H.264 video codec etc. Many of these technologies are not alien to the average consumer.
So much for the new stuff, but objects that have interesting heritage values are not forgotten either. The Transit Museum Society had an on-site exhibit with a few antique transit buses on display. These are the ones that your parents or grandparents used to ride. In fact, BC has been building interurban buses over 100 years ago. In 1905, the BC Electric Railway shop in New Westminster built Car 1207 for opening of the new Steveston line by way of the Arbutus Corridor connecting Vancouver and Richmond. Many long-time residents among those communities still remember the streetcar line and some have longed for its return.

American Robin (Turdus migratorius) is a migratory bird of the true thrush genus and Turdidae, the wider thrush family. It is named after the European robin because of its reddish-orange breast, though the two species are not closely related. It has roughly a two year lifespan.

Photograph taken at an altitude of One metres at 21:12pm on Thursday 25th May 2023 around sunset at Patricia Bay , a body of salt water that extends East from the Saanich Inlet and forms part of the North Saanich shoreline in the District of North Saanich in British Columbia. It features a beautiful park which is at the south end of the Scoter Trail. Formerly known as Union Bay, the bay was named after Princess Patricia of Connaught, daughter of the Duke of Connaught who was Governor General in 1912.
The park has ties to transportation and the waterfront, and their pivotal role in the development of North Saanich. It is also tied to the development of the Victoria International Airport and military aviation efforts during the Second World War. In 1937, the airport was developed as one of six Royal Canadian Air Force Station training facilities on Vancouver Island.
The land was originally settled by the Tseycum First Nation (Union Bay Indian Reserve No.4) , one of four Saanich villages of Southern Vancouver Island in the area and part of the Northern Straits Coast Salish language group.
In the Sencoten langauge Tseycum is spelled Wsikem and means Land of Clay. The languages spoken include Lkwungen, Malchosen, Semiahmoo, SENĆOŦEN andT’Sou-ke and in 2023 the Chief is Tanya Jimmy, who was elected in July 2019. The Tseycum people have five reserves located at:
Bare Island 9, Goldstream 13, Pender Island 8, Saturna Island 7 and Union Bay 4.

This series is part of an ongoing research on visual ways to dissolve pornographic imagery in abstraction and absurd.
For the Scrambled series, using video footage downloaded from Internet, I exploit the artifacts, errors, blurs inherent to heavy digital compression and incomplete files.
Dozens of snapshots are generated. Here, the creative process in itself rely on selecting the right images : identifiable as pornographic, but somehow deactivated.

"The problem with the rat race...is that even if you win, you're still just a rat."
I shot this footage at Kendal Calling. The event is an annual festival that was born from a group of music lovers who felt the fields of Cumbria could be put to better use during the summer months!
Pete The Temp combines high octane spoken word with musical comedy and audience participation. His work has been featured on BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service and has worked on projects with the British Council and the British Library. He's also gone to the Edinburgh and Brighton fringe festivals, in addition to The Oxford Literary Festival and the Bristol Poetry Festival.
(Footage recorded on a Canon 7D w/ prime EF 35mm f/1.4L USM lens at 25fps with original resolution of 1080p. Contrast and colour tweaks were made using Adobe Premiere and then compressed in mp4 format via the H.264 codec. Audio was recorded using the 7D's inbuilt camera microphone, which copes surprisingly well under tricky conditions.)
If you'd like a look at the beautiful natural setting in which Kendal Calling is staged, check out one of my photos from a previous year showing a herd of deer that can occasionally be spotted from the festival campsite.
This clip can be found, amongst others, in the video section of my Lucid Dreams portfolio on tjblackwell.co.uk.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Twenty one metres at 19:37pm on Tuesday 16th May 2023 off Lone Cone Road, from the front garden of a seventy year old house I was renting at 635 Campbell Street, Tofino in British Columbia in Canada.
I fell in love with Tofino, and the views afforded me from the wooden veranda each morning and evening. I would sit there for hours watching Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles dance across the sky, clouds cover the distant mountains, coffee in hand, Nikon D850 at my side. Pure bliss.

a7s vs 5Dm2! - Video details in 1080p.
I just did a quick (and unscientific) test. Notice the smooth details on the a7s, compared to the pixelated, blurry and moire areas from the 5D mark II - especially noticeable on the roofs tiles, leaves and lampposts.
So even if they "only" shoot in 1080p, there's still a world of difference. Also, thanks to the XAVC codec, you get a lot information more to work with when color grading.
What do you think? Surprised? =)
(I've added the same amount of sharpness to both images, and some quick color grading)

Hosted by TransLink and South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority, the Trans-Expo 2010 is an annual event aimed at bringing transit professionals together across Canada. This year the gathering is held at the Vancouver Convention Centre on November 16, 2010. Nearly 100 exhibitors set up booths at West Exhibit Hall C to showcase their mostly environmental-friendly products.

Duration: 5 seconds.
This is an experiment to see how flickr HD deals with larger videos in non standard aspect ratios. (See also my non-HD experiment.)
The video uploaded was 1000 x 1000 pixels in size. The codec used was H264, at the highest quality setting available in Quicktime. No interlacing was used.
In HD mode it is presented in flickr at 800 x 800 pixels.
Previously, before the introduction of Flickr HD, the maximum size / dimensions were 500 x 500 pixels - which is still the default non-HD size. (That is to say, 500 pixels is the length of the longest side.)
So Flickr HD continues the creative tradition of preserving customised, non-standard, aspect ratios, a feature that other video hosting services (YouTube, Vimeo) do not offer.
The video is a CGI animation (created using Maxon's Cinema 4D) - an Emoticon of a smiling wink adapted from the default flickr "Buddy Icon". The face has been mapped into a transparent (and non-reflective) sphere, which spins and then slows to a stop. "Flickr blue" and "flickr pink" coloured spotlights illuminate the face, casting appropriately coloured shadows. The shadows have been slightly softened with a blue grey "fill" or "area" light. Reflected light does not normally illuminate in the world of CGI, because of the monumental computer processing that would be required to do this. Naturalistic lighting usually needs to be "hand crafted". This is one one of the many reasons why - despite being fabulously profitable - they don't make a Shrek movie every week.
(For me, where I am located) the playback of the video is very jerky, nowhere close to the 25 frames per second of the original. This is possibly because I live in the third world (the United Kingdom / Great Britain), with a stone age internet infrastructure. Unfortunately, the smoothest playback may be experienced in the smallest, thumbnail, photostream view.
Because Tim Berners-Lee is considered by some to be some sort of Communist (with his ideals of Universal Web Access), this may be the case forever...
Playing a flickr video a second time usually results in a smoother experience, because a version (not necessarily the best version) has already been downloaded. I have super fast internet to my local telephone exchange - but between there, and the secret hollowed out volcano where the flickr servers reside, there is usually some kind of bandwidth bottleneck...

My last day in Venice for my vacation I decided to try doing my first time-lapse so I grabbed my Canon T4i, my Canon 10-22 wide angle lens, and a tripod and gave it a whirl. I didn't have an intervalometer but I did have a remote shutter release and a delay timer feature on my camera. Here's how I did it all:
I set my T4i timer to 2-seconds and pressed the remote shutter release as often as I could remember to while the sun was setting. This gave me a frame every 2-4 seconds which resulted in 655 .jpeg's, which I put into Lightroom just to batch crop & export as 1920x1080 - no other adjustments were made. I then took all the sunset frames, made a 'Credit' frame, and ran them all through a program called "Time Lapse Assembler" (Link below)
Once I got the .mov generated from "Time Lapse Assembler" I wanted to add some music so I imported the file into Final Cut Pro X and added some royalty-free background music I found fitting. I extended the credit frame to run to the end of the music and exported it one final time with the Apple ProRes 422 video codec.
Voila! Hope you enjoy.

Photograph taken at an altitude of One hundred and ninety three metres at 14:13pm on Thursday 7th September 2023 off the A386 in Roborough Down in Dartmoor, Devon.
Dartmoor ponies are free tom roam and graze across the landscape here and have done so for centuries. They are a single colour, hardy breed with records going back to 1012 AD acknowledging their presence and footprints being discovered that date back 3,500 years!
There are several breeds, including pedigree Dartmoor ponies , Dartmoor hill ponies and Shetland ponies .
