This image was one of three that I submitted for the Peak Photography 2011 competition run as part of the Buxton Festival held during the month of July. The theme of this years competition was 'fire and light' and attracted entries from national and international photographers coming from Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, London, Macedonia and Canada. With some serious photographers submitting and although I did not make the final placing for prizes, I was pleased to make the top fifteen finalists.

This image along with the other fourteen finalists will now be displayed alongside the finalists of the Poetry competition – held at the same time, in the University Devonshire Dome building in Buxton, Derbyshire until the 27th July when the festival comes to an end.

Silhouetted against the setting sun, the gritstone rock formation of Five Clouds, The Roaches during a cold January afternoon. Mist and low cloud cover the valley floor in the distance. Peak District National Park, Staffordshire Moorlands, UK.

This is taken from 41,000 feet. It's amazing how high this one just keeps going

When my friends from England arrived in Calgary early in September, they had two or three days in Calgary before we took off for a week down to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. We spent a day at the Calgary Zoo and then spent a day - very wet! - in the Banff/Lake Louise area. We drove the Lake Minnewanka Loop - I love to see the almost vertical cliff face that is seen in so many photos of this lake. The ominous clouds above soon turned from drizzle into non-stop rain for the day.

Another shot of the Sunset captured this evening enroute from Miami to Bogota. Somewhere over the Caribbean. This cloud really cooperated with being in the right place at the right time.

Mammatus are pouch-like cloud structures and a rare example of clouds in sinking air. As updrafts carry precipitation enriched air to the cloud top, upward momentum is lost and the air begins to spread out horizontally, becoming a part of the anvil cloud. Because of its high concentration of precipitation particles, the saturated air is heavier than the surrounding air and sinks back towards the earth.

Awesome clouds over Fort Wayne on July 17, 2010.

This was the view from the DHL car park before I set off for home last night. I 'stopped down' the aperture to enhance the rays, it wasn't quite this dark!

Rain clouds on the way over.

Guess where this image was taken?

Anybody?

No?

Well, I’ll tell you then. This is from my trip to Cornwall late last year.

Alright, not really. It’s from Iceland. Um…Surprise!

This was a lovely little spot that we found; it was very isolated and was just a few minutes away from a similar spot that was just full of tourists so we were happy to find it and have it to ourselves. This seemed to be where all of the ducks* (not in this shot) went for a bit of relaxation as it was nice and quiet.

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend.

*If that’s what they were. Not too sure. I know they were duck like, in that I know they were birds and was pretty sure that they were definitely not penguins.

A large hill beside the River Dove, which overlooks the picturesque and popular area of Dovedale. This shot was taken near the village of Thorpe, not far from The Peveril of the Peak Hotel.

This was taken last fall on a trip out to Jenny Jump State Observatory in NJ. It's incredible that you can get good star viewing just a little over an hour from NYC. This shot was taken as I wait for the clouds to move past our viewing made for a nice effect.

Another photo of British Airways flight 288 departing against a gorgeous sunset. Kinda hard to see it against the clouds but I like how the jetwash distorts the light.
