A section of the cliff along the coast at Barwon Heads. It's a stunning coastline. The cliffs are comprised of a mix of Sandstone and Basalt.
The two on the left are almost done, the one on the right is just starting...we are afraid they may scare away our resident barn swallow pair, who have just laid their second clutch of eggs for the season, in their two year old nest just on the other side of the beam from the pair seen here

Because of the long drought conditions the local San Diego area has experienced, the coastal bluffs have had years to dry out and settle. When it rains, the earth absorbs the water and expands, causing bluff collapse.
Il colle tufaceo su cui sorge Civita è minato alla base dalla continua erosione di due torrentelli che scorrono nelle valli sottostanti e dall’azione delle piogge e del vento: si sta dunque sgretolando, lentamente ma inesorabilmente.
Il borgo, dove resistono a vivere poche famiglie, sta franando, evaporando - si sta smarrendo: domani non sarà che un miraggio, come i sogni più belli, come Venezia (anch’essa condannata dalle acque), come tutto ciò che rivela la fragilità, l’impotenza umana.
La più bella definizione di Civita è del suo figlio Bonaventura Tecchi: “la città che muore”.
Il destino quasi segnato del luogo, il paesaggio irreale dei calanchi argillosi che assediano il borgo, i loro colori tetri che contrastano con quelli dorati del tufo, fanno di Civita un luogo unico, solare e crepuscolare insieme, vivo o spettrale, a seconda dell’umore di chi la guarda dal precipizio del Belvedere, conclusione “aerea” - quasi - del centro storico di Bagnoregio che inizia dalla splendida porta Albana.
Di fronte al Belvedere, collegata al mondo da un unico e stretto ponte di 300 metri, ecco Civita, appoggiata dolcemente su un cocuzzolo, col suo ciuffo di case medievali.

The design of this apartment building strikes me as unnecessarily complex--all those levels and set-backs and especially the odd double-window outgrowths, upper left. What is the aim? To give more units more daylight? A new building in Oakland's upper Broadway neighborhood.

The last light of the day shines on a cliff face just east of the Royal Arches in Yosemite Valley casting the Sun’s warm glow on the cool Sierra Nevada granite. The enormity of the Sierra Nevada Batholith - the mass of granite that makes up the majority of the mountain range - never ceases to amaze me. Looking down upon its glacially carved and eroded shapes I ponder the vast geological tapestry that led to this superlative valley, and the forces still at work pushing them higher. While this narrow sunlit ledge is merely 1600 feet or so above the valley floor below, just half the height of its famous neighbor away to the west, El Capitan, it is quite dramatic in the spotlight.
