Due to issues with the structural integrity of the R44s on the subway R32s and R42s were retained instead but were on borrowed time as the R179 order was looming. Due to numerous complications with the R179s the R32s and R42s lived a longer life then anticipated. Now in 2022 both types have been retired. R42s are still used on refuse, rail adhesion, and other work trains however R32s are currently being disposed of. A string of R32s sit here at the 38th Street yard in Brooklyn awaiting disposal while R42s are sitting at the refuse platform.

The three on the left started out white, while the red one started out brown. They were all dyed with what the Paas package called "classic" colors (that is, dye with lemon juice rather than vinegar as a mordant.)
Pamela's BUTTERSCOTCH-CHIP CLASSICS
1/2 pkg (18oz) refrigerated sugar cookie dough
2/3 Cup butterscotch chips
2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
1 Tbsp grated orange peel
1. Heat oven to 350* in bowl, using wooden spoon, combine all ingredients. Roll dough into 1-in balls, place 2 in apart on ungreased baking sheets.
2. Bake 8 to 10 minutes, or until golden brown. Transfer to wire racks, cool completely. Store in airtight container up to one week or in the freezer up to six months.
