Due to issues with the structural integrity of the R44s on the subway R32s and R42s were retained instead but were on borrowed time as the R179 order was looming. Due to numerous complications with the R179s the R32s and R42s lived a longer life then anticipated. Now in 2022 both types have been retired. R42s are still used on refuse, rail adhesion, and other work trains however R32s are currently being disposed of. A string of R32s sit here at the 38th Street yard in Brooklyn awaiting disposal while R42s are sitting at the refuse platform.
