A rock alongside the trail that caught my eye yesterday.

Normally I would not capture this. But with the new camera comes new opportunities and experiments! Especially when jpegs straight out of the camera look this good

My Fuji X100V was in manual focus and preset around 2-3 feet when I went through the Chipotle line tonight. With the camera draped around my neck like a tourist, I just pressed the shutter and kept pressing every few seconds or so. The goal was to see if I could get any low-light action of food prep.

If the line of customers had been shorter, I may have taken the time to autofocus on something specific without irritating too many people. But, I did not want to hold anyone up.

Anyway, the only luck I had was that the letters on the sneeze guard ended up being in focus, which somewhat saved the pic. Or not. #classicnegative

Film: Classic Neg.

When you visit the Golden Gate Bridge, the photo options are endless. Just grab your camera or phone and start firing away. No matter the angle or perspective, you'll probably get something. #classicnegative

I've thought about hiking up to the top of Half Dome for years, and this year I finally got a permit to do so.

The image shows the most famous section of the entire hike - the cable part, which is basically a 45-60 degree angle rock surface with cables to grab onto. I knew this would be steep and hard, but it was even steeper than I had imagined. It was truly a different and a little scary experience.

A fun fact - I returned to the bottom of the cable section the next day after my summit just to take some photos of others doing it. This image shows two hikers climbing up the steepest section and they were almost to the top.

.. and depressing to see so many shops closed in the city centre and so few people about - maybe it was the rain.

On her last day home before returning to college, I had a coffee partner –– my daughter, Natalie. I think she likes the stuff even more than I do.

Here in Northern California, we complain when we don't have rain, then complain when we do. Human beings, right? Anyway, this morning was my first non-rain photo walk in weeks. A local farmer's fence tells the tale. #classicnegative

I do a daily photo walk even when it’s raining. This excursion often includes a stop for coffee near the Menlo Park, Calif., train station. Today, the train station was pretty vacant, which is primarily due to Caltrain ridership being only 30 percent of pre-COVID levels.

Observing the woman pictured, she wasn’t interested in a train to San Francisco or San Jose. Instead, she was going through all the depot’s recycling bins and pulling out bottles and cans. I assume there are still places where she can get pennies for each of these items.

On a somewhat symbolic note, the umbrella has an unintended meaning. The bank branding is for First Republic, a San Francisco-based regional bank that collapsed earlier this week. Between the transit system problems, the woman’s poverty, and the bank failure, well, it’s a pretty sobering scene.

I took my X100F out for a Sunday morning walk here in Northern California, and this was the farm scene across the street. No, I did not jump the wire. #classicnegative

I have had a few million chocolate snacks in my life, but I am not certain I've ever had a better-tasting cake. My wife, Esther, does not eat desserts. Unfathomable, but true. Of course, that did not stop me from buying her a chocolate fudge birthday cake yesterday from Draeger's in Menlo Park, Calif. At some point over the next day or two, I will have consumed the whole thing, #classicnegative

Today, I walked a trail at Cowell Ranch, just south of Half Moon Bay on the Northern California coast. Some of the fields on the ranch looked like they were untended, while others had active crops. This pic is of an old barn or shed on the property, along with some farm equipment. Since it looks like it may not have been used in a looong time, I tried to make the photo look old and grainy, too. #classicnegative

I don't tell this to many people, but I really like trees. ;)

Daily walks through my neighborhood bring many bicycle encounters.

Sometimes I'll quickly dial in a shutter speed and then just fire away at a passing biker. No real prep. The result can be a technically crappy pic, like this one, with all sorts of problems.

Yet, I still like it. Certainly I could have worked on it in post, but decided not. Anything goes, I guess.

Even in the middle of a significant rain, I still have to take a daily walk or two. On this morning's hilly excursion, it was business as usual for the UPS guy. #classicnegative

I've heard of Wonderland trail for years but never settled my mind on it because the trail is over 90 miles long and permit is very hard to get. This year, my friends finally convinced me to try it. On the day when the permit was released, we all woke up early to test our luck and I was the lucky one to find an open itinerary that covered about 80% of the loop.

Our permit was split into two parts. The first part was 5 days covering about 65 miles, and the second part was 2 days covering 18 miles.

Since this year we have seen late snow in April and May, snow pack was still quiet high even in early July, which was the time our permit was for. On the day when we picked up our permit from Ranger Station, a ranger told us that most groups had given up their permit and we were one of the first few groups to attempt. He told us it would be a real adventure.

Indeed, for the remaining days when we were on trail, it was quiet miserable. We didn't have good weather for the majority of the hike and hiking on snow with wet socks all day long wasn't pleasing either. The worst part was river crossing as many bridges were out early in the season and walking on slippery logs with raging river underneath was really scary.

But all things said, this was a journey that really challenged me and taught me so much. I am glad I had this experience with some of my best friends and I will be posting a series of photos here to remember this journey.

Btw, the editing style on this series is very different than my normal style. I was mostly using Fuji's classic negative film with some grain added because I like how color is rendered. It represents a sense of dreary and loneliness which was exactly how I felt when I was in this journey. I hope you will enjoy this journey as well.

We did takeout tonight at PF Chang's restaurant in Palo Alto, Calif. While waiting, I asked the hostess if I could take a photo of the toothpick holder. She said OK and wondered why anyone in the world would take this pic. I explained that taking pics of mundane items amused me –– and likely no one else. Regardless, the staff was very nice and no doubt will call me "the weird toothpick guy" when I return in a few weeks. #classicnegative

As I waited on my to-go dinner in downtown Palo Alto tonight, I did a short photo walk. Passing a pedestrian tunnel at the Transit Center, I noticed two things perhaps worth mentioning.

One, the entrance sign said no riding bikes. Well, that was ignored. Two, there was no graffiti in the tunnel. None. Zero. Zilch. This is a very uncommon, but welcome, sight around here.

When still working, there's the feeling that zero medical information should be shared publicly, as one could be discriminated against. But, no one cares when you are my age and retired. So, this is the reality. I have to load up with a ridiculous number of pills at breakfast just to ensure I don't croak before lunch. (PS: I'm glad to be here!) #classicnegative

Recently, I've bemoaned the fact that our local train station in Menlo Park, Calif., is so dead these days. It used to be alive, but now there are very commuters since Covid.

One of my walks took me past the station today, and I was pleased to encounter a nice woman who still depends on the rails to get to work. She was one of only two persons boarding the next train headed south. #classicnegative

Pop-up bakeries are a welcome addition to some of the streets around here. When I’m out and encounter one of these on a sidewalk, I pull out my wallet. This one in Menlo Park, Calif., resulted in my purchase of scones and cookies this afternoon. Yes, they were excellent. Definitely a convenient concept, and I'd like to have one pop up in my yard.

Winter proper has arrived in Rosedale - 0c and snow squalls !

This morning in the kitchen, even before having a first cup of coffee, I grabbed the closest camera. So, what to shoot? Well, I had already placed a whole-wheat muffin in the toaster, so I fired away at that. Turns out I had a Fuji 60mm macro lens on the camera, though I would have used whatever lens was already mounted. If you’re keeping count, this would be the 70,000th time I have had a muffin for breakfast. A creature of routine, I guess. #classicnegative

Northern California has record-breaking temps this week, thus making wildfire season even more difficult. There have also been many power outages. It also means people are headed to the beach to cool off. Today, a weekday, I visited Cowell Ranch on the Pacific Coast, and many hikers were out. Over the weekend, it will be way more packed. Semi-old school pic with Fuji #classicnegative and a $30 #Ricoh 50mm lens.

It has been raining like crazy here in Northern California. While out for a walk, two things were noticed. One, FedEx and other delivery services work very hard, regardless of the weather. Two, rain puddles are a good teacher when trying to learn how to shoot a reflection. #classicnegative

Along the trail I walked Saturday.

This is basically SOOC, save for a bit of added sharpening in post. I really like the desaturated, filmic look of the Classic Negative simulation. It works well for subjects with greens and browns, especially.
