Athens. Classical Athens was a powerful city-state. A center for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum. Athens was also the birthplace of Socrates, Pericles, and Sophocles . It is widely referred to as the Cradle of Western Civilization and the Birthplace of Democracy largely due to the impact of its cultural and political achievements during the 5th and 4th centuries BC on the rest of the then known European continent.

The Erechtheum is an ancient Greek temple on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens. The temple was built between 421 and 407 BCE. It derived its name from a shrine dedicated to the legendary Greek hero Erichthonius.

Found at Ruvo di Puglia (see Rubi on Pleiades) in a semi-chamber tomb south of the city (fondo Buccettolo, on today's Corso Carafa), in April 1834

The krater takes its name from the scene on Side A, which represents the funeral of the infant Opheltes at Nemea, later known as Archemoros ("beginning of doom", that is, presaging the defeat of the Seven against Thebes). On Side B, photographed here, is represented Herakles on his Labors in the west. Above is Atlas holding up the heavens, below the Garden of the Hesperides. The neck represents a Dionysiac revel. The vase bears a series of holes paired across fractures, which indicate that it was repaired in antiquity.

A friend passed this argyle sweater on to me when it accidently got thrown in the wash. It was a happy accident for me-it made a beautiful pair of classical mittens!

I now know the true meaning of 'thundering' hooves! Before these guys came out into the arena, I was in the barn area when they came thundering down a narrow hallway. I had to squish over to one side to let them get by. The team, in full gear and carriage, passed inches from my face, ground shaking, and thunder roaring! Thier power and beauty was exhilerating!
